St. Joseph Orphans’ Picnic, August 11 Kentucky’s biggest Catholic picnic is on August 11. From noon to midnight, the St. Joseph Orphans’ picnic will be in full swing; the entrance to the picnic is off of Brownsboro Road, with free parking available in the back lot.The annual picnic began well over a century ago in 1850, the year after the St. Joseph Children’s Home was founded, when a group of Ursuline nuns needed to raise money for the orphaned children in their care; now it attracts over 60,000 picnic-goers a year. Like attendance, the proceeds have greatly increased over the course of 160 years, and they directly benefit the St. Joseph Children’s Home and its various programs. Averaging more than 60 booths featuring raffles, games of chance, and food and drink, the picnic is sure to have something for everyone. Over 3,000 volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering for decades, work with friends, family, and co-workers to put on this incredible event. There are always great prizes at stake, including weekend getaways and new cars; and for the food-inclined there are chances to win gift certificates to local restaurants, cakes, and delicious home-cooked chicken. Although there are many summer picnics in Louisville, the St. Joseph picnic is the one not to miss. From 5-10 PM on August 10--the Friday before the picnic--St. Joseph puts on Friday Night Live, which features live music and many of the picnic and food booths. Picnic Day is on Saturday, August 11 from noon to midnight.
