Shelby Lynne Loved Her Time with Us Shelby Lynne was three years old when her mother remarried. Recalling from age three to fourteen years old, “I always had more work to do. I remember standing on a stool to do dishes. I folded laundry, made everyone’s bed, ran the wood splitter and stacked the wood, and worked on the tobacco farm.” Shelby’s older stepsister did not have to work. One of her vivid memories was planting tobacco. She walked behind “the transplanter” with a milk-crate of seedlings. She used a stick to dig a hole, insert the plant, and tamp the dirt firmly by stepping on each side of Read more on page 4...

By Kim Kelly, Next-Step Assistant
On Nov. 18th, 2015, the Next Step Program welcomed all staff of the Methodist Home, Versailles Campus, to join us for our first birthday celebration.
We have a wonderful reason to celebrate—nearly 150 youth have now received treatment from the Next Step Program in nine Kentucky counties! In 2015, in addition to serving clients struggling with substance abuse, our staff has been hard at work becoming certified in

It’s the time of year where we pledge to be better people. The gym is crowded with folks who want to be slimmer and fit. We promise to be more faithful in our devotional life. The list goes on. What are
had with Dr. Sleeth in person that touched me. In that encounter he encouraged us to look for a miracle each day. Our world “sells” the negative to us each day. The major news outlets peddle the sensational to reinforce the destructive. But I’ve been trying to receive Dr. Sleeth’s message to look for a miracle every day rather than focus on pessimistic messaging.
I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Matthew Sleeth recently. He’s authored a book entitled, “24/6.” The book is about keeping Sabbath in one’s life. The book is a good and worthwhile read. It was, however, the conversation that my small group

to all the building blocks of recovery. Next Step has helped clients gain their GEDs, find employment, and avoid incarceration. The team counsels families affected by a loved one’s addiction, provides assistance with immediate material needs, and links clients and families with other agencies in their communities to assist them with health care and education. We take a truly holistic approach to treating the causes and conditions of mental illness and substance abuse. Every Friday morning, the Next Step Program team gathers to report on their progress, brainstorm new approaches to treatment, and share knowledge of community resources with each other. We celebrate our clients' successes, share in their sorrows, and search for answers to the unique
difficulties our clients face. Our interns, Rachel Smith and Chelsea Cleary, both of Asbury University, have brought tremendous talent to our team this year. Amanda Ortt has begun to provide Equine Therapy to our youth with terrific results, and we look forward to expansion of this program in 2016. As we seek to meet the complex needs of our clients and understand the barriers to recovery in the counties we serve, our mission remains the same—to offer every youth the tools and freedom to live life free from substance abuse. Why Do You Need a Will? By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President of Advancement
Did you know that 41% of all Americans ages 55-64 and 62% ages 34-54 don’t have a will?
Dying without a will is called “intestate” —thus creating significant obstacles for their remaining family members to overcome during a very emotional period in their lives. Another challenge when a person dies without a will is that the state decides who receives their earthly goods, and does so to the advantage of the state. Increased
revenues for the state from estate taxes are neither in the best interest of the surviving family nor of the person’s favorite charities. A will is a logical means by which a person can plan for the distribution of his or her estate, including personal possessions, the welfare of minor children, and also for thoughtful charitable gift planning. Many people who financially support The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth each year want to provide for this mission into the future. A charitable bequest—created within their will—can be the way to provide a permanent basis of ongoing funding for our mission to children. In addition to providing for KyUMH, certain types

Things began to get worse at age seven years old, when Shelby Lynne remembers being beaten for the first time by her mother. “My momma had her hands full with two new babies and stress. I couldn’t do anything right to help her. She started beating me with a belt —at times for no apparent reason.”
Shelby Lynne has wonderful memories of her time at Mary Kendall Campus as a teenager.

Shelby Lynne’s little half-sisters were too young to do any work. Each evening after dinner, Shelby Lynne was required to dump the scraps at the wood’s edge. Petrified of the night, Shelby ran a long distance by herself while being frightened by the sound of coyotes. Upon returning, her little sisters would
lock her out of the house—then laugh at her tear-soaked face.
Shelby Lynne felt continuous rejection. She struggled with why she was treated differently— beaten by her mother from whom she never felt love and affection. In later years, she learned the history that helped put the pieces together. Her mother had been in an Trust in the abusive first heart, and marriage own unders at only 16 ways sub years old, will make and Shelby —Pr Lynne was born during that time. “I reminded my mother of my real father. I looked like him. She despised those memories and me. She even told me that I was a mistake.” When Shelby Lynne was 14 years old, her mother found out that she had talked to a boy on the phone. “All day long she beat me.” She said her

The judge placed Shelby Lynne at Mary Kendall Campus. “Standing at the door to welcome me was a tall red-headed lady named Helen. She eventually became the mother figure that I needed at the time.” Shelby Lynne arrived a few weeks before her 15th birthday. “I had my birthday party at Windy

I shared a room with two other girls. We giggled and laughed and told stories that I will cherish forever. It was the best time of my life there. I loved it.” Once she finished the KyUMH program, she returned to live with her mother, but tension quickly escalated again. She then left her mother’s home to stay with her father. That stay also did not go well. She then went out on her own and spent several years of intense struggle before she was able to build a better life. I am happy to report that she is now triumphing over her painful past and has been able to finally find the happiness and love for which she yearned.

[Left] Linda Snow from Russell Springs United Methodist Church delivered 12 handmade quilts in December. Remarkably, Linda made each one herself. She is holding a quilt specifically for a boy—a welcomed gift as we typically get more girls items... but have the equal numbers of boys and girls.
The youth group from Trinity Hill UMC in Lexington, Ky volunteered time to sort through mounds of clothing donations—folding and organizing. We display these items in our "Teen Shop". When a resident arrives on campus with nothing, they get to shop (without money) for items which make them feel more at home. We try to keep a nice selection of sizes for boys and girls, and these volunteers helped identify what their generation is currently wearing.
Bethel UMW got a tour of Versailles Campus, then delivered Randy Coy, President, a generous check and brought a large number of toiletries for our children.
