want to be the person others can relate to. I want to be the one that made it.” Despite homelessness, being a teenage mother and living in foster care, Tierra has overcome enormous odds thanks to The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth (KyUMH). When she was three-years-old, Tierra and her sister lived with her mom, stepdad and two baby brothers. Both of her parents worked hard to support her and her siblings and life felt peaceful and normal.
When Tierra turned 14, her world came crashing down. Tierra’s parents
abruptly separated and her mom was left to raise four children on her own.
“We didn’t even see it coming. Everything seemed fine. But after the separation, everything went downhill from there.” “I didn’t know how to handle it. I began acting out and skipping school. I wish I hadn’t done those things.” Tierra went to truancy court numerous times. Her mom struggled to juggle court dates and work full-time with four children. Tierra’s mom became unemployed and their family homeless. To complicate matters, at age 17, Tierra discovered she was having a baby. Tierra continued on page 6

In this edition of the Children’s Voice, you will find our annual report information. I always feel that this report is just a little like a “State of the Union” address. We intend to be transparent about the receiving and spending of resources that our faithful supporters share with us. We want to give an accurate account concerning the number of lives we have touched through our many programs. Finally, we want to cast a vision for the future of the agency and share our hope for the future. Our team has put together reports and charts that disclose the information related to the first two

components of finance and number of youth served. It’s the third part that I’d like to focus on for just a moment. The decision to relocate our Versailles Campus and build a new facility is exciting and is, in some ways, the biggest undertaking of my entire ministry in the church. Until this moment, I never dreamed that it would be possible to raise 15 million dollars for anything. Now, I not only believe it, I know God is going to help us do it! While this building is very important to us, it’s not a final destination. It’s only a means to a greater vision of serving the youth in Kentucky. Our hope for the future is to provide services to families at risk while they remain in their
homes and communities. Our residential services are primarily about “rescuing youth.” We dream about a future that focuses on prevention and intervention before the family completely breaks down. The relocation project helps us reallocate some of the valuable resources that have been entrusted to us by faithful friends who’ve gone before us. Will you join us as we pay homage to their sacrifice? Will you “Build with Us?”

How Will You Be Remembered? By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President of Advancement
Legacy is defined as something someone has achieved and continues to exist after they are gone. Have you ever thought about your footprint on this earth when you are gone? Certainly each of us long to be remembered fondly by those who knew us. We hope that we leave this world a better place for our having been here. We hope that a part of us lives on – our legacy.
Our 145- year-old ministry exists today because of the compassionate response of thousands who came before us and chose to leave a legacy of love through their estate planning. They left behind a legacy of compassion and life affirming renewal. Our Legacy Society exists for the purpose of recognizing those compassionate people who let us know that they will be leaving a legacy gift to benefit our young people. Members are those who included us in their wills as well as those who have chosen to invest in a charitable annuity or other
planned giving option. By joining our Legacy Society, you become a member of a special group of people committed to sustaining this ministry well into the next generation. Your participation helps encourage others to do likewise. As a thank you for joining, we will give you a beautiful tapestry reserved only for Legacy Society members. If you would like information on charitable annuities, including KyUMH in your will, or other planned giving options, please send your contact information in the enclosed business
reply envelope using the response card (see bottom right corner page 5). On the following pages, you will see tributes to wonderful people who ensured their legacy would make a difference in the lives of young people served by KyUMH today and in the future. Their legacies will change the lives of young people forever for the better, and as their lives improve, the community improves. They have chosen to leave a legacy of hope and the opportunity for a new life to abused, abandoned and neglected children.

Tierra Rose Above It All continued Tierra continued from page 2 At Tierra’s final court meeting, the judge ruled neglect, and separated Tierra and her siblings from her mother. Tierra and her new baby were placed in foster care. Her foster mother, Mary, welcomed her and her son and introduced Tierra to church and was there for her baptism. Mary also helped her land her first job. After a time, Mary’s mom became very
sick and needed intense care. She was no longer able to provide for Tierra and her son. Tierra had to find another place to live. With no home, Tierra’s social worker introduced
her to our independent living program, Safe Haven. We gave her and her son an apartment, taught her effective parenting skills, showed her how to budget, encouraged her to maintain a healthly lifestyle,
enrolled her in a GED program (which she received June 2015) and helped her enroll in community college. Currently, Tierra is taking classes and plans to transfer to a four-year-university to study social work. “I want to go into social work to make a differenceto try to help. At Safe Haven, they taught me, little things mean a lot.”
