erry spent his childhood trying to buy affection. He felt no love at home from his mother who was an alcoholic and drug addict. He rarely saw his older brother or sister who lived with his cousins and he never really felt like he fit in. Out of desperation, he would try to buy his friends and win their attention . . . at any cost. Terry grew up without knowing his father and found himself surrounded by strange men his mother brought in and out of their lives. For the majority of this time, Terry was raising himself. “I remember one time, she left me to go with a truck driver to Chicago. The next day, I Read more on page 4...

the President's Desk: Change

By Rev. Randy Coy, President & CEO

Is it just me or does change get harder for everyone as we age? Or does it have anything to do with aging at all? Maybe change is just plain hard no matter how old you are. The dictionary defines homeostasis as: “The tendency of a system, especially the physiological system of higher animals, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function.”

Considering this definition, I think I’m guilty as charged when it comes to change; however, we continue to be confronted with it. It happens on a daily basis. I’m almost always out of touch with clothing styles. They change on a regular basis. I’ve been shocked to learn that young people are buying those blues jeans with the holes already in them! It’s fashionable, evidently. Go figure. By the time you read this, you will have probably heard that KyUMH has sold its Versailles property. We’ve been announcing this probability for a while now. And God, in His infinite wisdom, sent us

a buyer without our ever having listed the property with a real estate agent. Frontier Nursing University (FNU) has purchased the property. FNU has a rich tradition of educating Nurse Practitioners, primarily mid-wives. They started their ministry in Hyden, Kentucky in 1930. You can learn more about them by going to www.Frontier.edu. This means that we will move current Versailles Campus to our new campus in Nicholasville within the next 18 months. This is going to mean change for President continued on page 6...

Move from Versailles Bittersweet By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President of Advancement

This year I will celebrate my 27th year at KyUMH. Versailles has become a second home to me. For 27 years, I have driven past Calumet, Keeneland, the castle, turned into our entrance and driven down our tree-lined drive. I met my wonderful husband and my two step-children on this campus. I have made many friends in Woodford County; so the thought that in 18 months I will no longer be working

on this beautiful campus, is difficult to imagine. I am not alone in my feelings. Many former residents, staff, board members, Friends of the Children auxiliary and other supporters have expressed their sadness. It is not only the history we have, but also the absolute beauty. You feel a real sense of serenity just upon entering the campus. The abundance of trees, green grass, birds and wildlife in our little valley is a visual reminder to all who enter that God has, and always has had,

His hand on this place. Time and again, former residents have described their feelings upon first entering the campus. Its beauty gave them hope that this might be a safe place. Nevertheless, I watched the prayer-filled process that our board went through to finally decide our only option was to leave. In order to be good stewards of our generous donations, they had no choice. To meet the current needs of our kids, we would have Bittersweet continued on page 6...

Using Play to Heal Devon Lindsey PR & Communications

As a therapist for KyUMH, Carol Loose is constantly discovering new methods of effective treatment, but there is one method she has recently developed a passion for – play therapy. Play therapy encourages young people to use make-believe and other imaginative activities to resolve psychological challenges. “It’s not easy to get the kids to talk about their past,” said Carol. “If you give them a way to either act out a situation or process their struggles through “play,” they start opening up and work toward healing.” To expand on her knowledge, Carol recently attended a conference - Using Superheroes in Play Therapy and Counseling with Children and Teens with Lawrence Rubin, PHD, ABPP, LMHC, RPT—S. Dr. Rubin Carol and her colleague, Tiffany Staggs, test out the superhero costumes at the Kentucky Association for Play Therapy (KAPT) board conference. discussed using metaphors when incorporating superheroes in therapy. For example, if you have a client that is orphaned, you can discuss the story of Batman. Dr. Rubin also shared that superheroes appeal to teens for a variety of reasons. Carol discussed the day she knew play therapy was effective. She was working with a client on making puppets – part of the treatment. Her plan was to complete the activity as a way to build rapport. When Carol asked the child why she specifically chose to make a frog puppet, the client’s answer surprised her. “I picked the frog because frogs have enemies in their natural habitat,” the child responded. “We were able to identify and process her abuse and neglect. I truly don’t think I would have been able to get this information from this client with talk therapy alone. I knew then I wanted to pursue a credential in play therapy,” Carol said.

The image above shows a sand tray - one of Carol's play therapy intervention techniques. The child used figurines to visually display her thoughts and feelings.

Carol has been a KyUMH therapist for nine years, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist and she serves on the Kentucky Association for Play Therapy (KAPT) board.

woke up all by myself and just went to school. I loved school because it was a safe place for me.”

Terry experienced a childhood of abandonment, but rose above it all to start his own business at 34-years-old.

Throughout his childhood, Terry was in constant fear of house fires. On more than one occasion, their place caught fire due to carelessness. “One time, my mom and another guy had been drinking all day, they had thrown me out of the apartment and when I knocked on the door to ask if I could come back in, a cloud of smoke came out. My eyes were watering and burning and the next thing I remember I was being packed in a police car.” Despite the dysfunction at home, Terry continued to work hard in school and take odd jobs. However, one of Terry’s biggest

vices was stealing. Terry stole toys and other items from local stores and gave to kids in return for what he hoped would be friendship. “I just wanted people to like me. Everybody made fun of me for my clothes and my dark-rimmed glasses. I looked like Steve Urkel and it was tough.” After the last fire, Terry was moved to his Grandma’s house. During his time with his Grandma, Terry continued to steal. He stole food stamps from his Grandma and toys and treats to "buy" his friends. Terry’s cousin found out about his stealing and told his Grandma everything. She contacted social services and he eventually came to the Mary Kendall Campus. Terry was 12-years-old when he entered KyUMH and fondly reflects on how he felt that first moment through the door. “I remember walking through the front door and there being a big lounge area, TV, couches, but my favorite part, you could go to the kitchen and fix the biggest bowl of cereal you wanted! I never had that growing up.”

Things were going well for Terry until his state social worker unexpectedly decided to move him to a different residential facility. From that point, Terry was moved to several different placements over a five-year-period – each one presenting more and more challenges and heartaches. Eventually, he was returned to KyUMH. It was during this visit the counselors had time to work with Terry to help him understand his past and why he had such a problem with stealing.

in jail. While sitting in jail, he had time to reflect. “That was the most clarity I’ve had my whole life. I reflected on everything in the past – where did I lose myself? Is this what I am becoming?” After that, Terry decided to finish school, received his massage therapy license and now owns his own business. He donates his time to a number of local schools and organizations.

He made great progress and was transitioned to the KyUMH Independent Living program from which he eventually graduated. After leaving KyUMH, Terry went through some really tough times. The culmination was when he wound up serving 90 days

had to tear down and rebuild which was too expensive. Also, when we moved here in the 1930’s, we had a working farm where our residents could help support themselves by working the farm. Now, the 216 acres is more land than we need. We have seen God’s guidance in locating our new property. We visited several possible properties. None of them stood out. Then we found Ashgrove in Jessamine County. I remember as we approached it from the street I thought, how beautiful!

The land overlooks a lovely little lake and the area is very serene. God continued to reveal his will through our buyer, Frontier Nursing.

God has settled the issue of where we will go and who will take our place-- all that is left is to build the buildings and find servants who can and will invest in our new vision. With what He has already provided, I am excited to see what He has yet in store for the future of this ministry!
