Homeowners’ insurance (also known as Buildings Insurance) protects you financially against loss or damage to the actual physical structure of your home – as well as to any permanent fittings in your house, including things like built-in cupboards, kitchen units, toilets and baths. Your home is probably your single largest investment and your home loan, if you have one will be secured against it. Now imagine if you were uninsured and your home burnt down; not only would you have lost your biggest asset, you would still be faced with paying back your mortgage in full. You might think that the risk of your home burning down is minimal, but recent statistics published by the Fire Protection Association of South Africa show that almost 10 000 fires were reported to have occurred in private homes in one year alone, resulting in losses of more than R573-billion.
If you own a property which is financed, you are required by the financial institution to have homeowners’ insurance. It is mistakenly believed that it’s compulsory to have homeowner’s insurance with the bank that granted your home loan. In fact, you can take out this type of cover with any insurer. It may also be beneficial to choose the company that is already insuring your car or other valuables, as the company may offer a lower premium if you insure all your valuables with them. The reason is simple: the more insurance cover you take out ‘under one roof’ – for your car, your home and its contents and your personal possessions, the less risk you pose to your insurer. You have already proved that you are a responsible person and unlikely to risk what you’ve worked so hard for – so you may be rewarded with a lower premium. Something else to consider is Bond Insurance or Bond Cover, this is a life insurance plan providing cover specifically with regards to home loan and mortgage protection. A Bond Insurance Plan pays the outstanding home loan in the event of death, dread disease or permanent disability, and the monthly home loan instalments in the event of illness, injury, temporary disability and retrenchment.

For years, domestic workers have been among the most exploited of all workers - labouring long hours for meagre pay, sometimes on the receiving end of abuse by their employers. However, measures have been put in place to improve their situation under the so-called “Domestic Workers Act” (i.e. Sectoral Determination 7 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act). This means a minimum wage has been set, specific working conditions laid down, and other measures have been put in place to regulate a previously unregulated industry.
The contribution that domestic workers make to our economy (and many of our individual lives!) is often taken for granted and it is therefore up to each of us to ensure that not only do domestic workers in our employ receive the benefits that the legislation prescribes, but also that they are treated fairly and with dignity.
Who is a Domestic Worker?
Pietermaritzburg area that work more than 27 hours a week should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R11.44 and those that works less than 27 hours a week should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R13.39.
If your domestic worker works on a Sunday or public holiday, they must receive double pay. You must also ensure that your domestic worker does not work more than 45 hours a week. For years, domestic workers have been among the most exploited of all workers - labouring long hours for meagre pay, sometimes on the receiving end of abuse by their employers. However, measures have been put in place to improve their situation under the so-called “Domestic Workers Act” (i.e. Sectoral Determination 7 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act). This means a minimum wage has been set, specific working conditions laid down, and other measures have been put in place to regulate a previously unregulated industry.
The contribution that domestic workers make to our economy (and many of our individual lives!) is often taken for granted and it is therefore up to each of us to ensure that not only do domestic workers in our employ receive the benefits that the legislation prescribes, but also that they are treated fairly and with dignity.
Who is a Domestic Worker?
Pietermaritzburg area that work more than 27 hours a week should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R11.44 and those that works less than 27 hours a week should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R13.39.
If your domestic worker works on a Sunday or public holiday, they must receive double pay. You must also ensure that your domestic worker does not work more than 45 hours a week. If your domestic worker lives on your property you may deduct 10% of their salary for accommodation, provided that the accommodation you provide complies with certain minimum standards laid down in legislation.
