Newsletter No 102 August 2014

EDITOR’S NOTE Greetings to all quilters. Congratulations to all our members who won prizes or awards at the Royal Show. Hopefully you visited some of the many Quilting shows in our country recently. The inspiration and the motivation from shows such as these is invaluable. There

will be photos from Sisters and IQC in the next edition. A new guild has recently been started in the Dundee area: Love2patch. We wish the members well and hope that it will go from strength to strength. If you have anything you would like to be put into the newsletter, please send it al-

ready in the format it will be in the newsletter. We unfortunately do not have time to devise an article/advert/etc. Festival arrangements are ‘hotting’ up; we hope you are sewing something already. Be well and sew well-

Judy

FROM THE HOT SEAT

What a wonderful part of South Africa we live in! A few cold days here and there, but generally mild winters with beautiful sunny days and no humidity. Great weather for quilting, or for doing anything else for that matter. I am sure, like me, you are feeling more energetic. And also, I hope, inspired and busy working away at your quilt/s for the Festival. By this time next year it will all be over, but now it is time for the count down. The class details will be available by the next meeting. Are you saving up for them? And maybe for your accommodation? And for all the wonderful things our shops will have to tempt us? Maybe time to clear out those unwanted items and turn them into cash on one of the websites! Do some quilt-making/dress-making/baking/baby sitting/dog sitting/ house sitting for some cash! Open a "skelm" account. Where there's a will there's a way......... How is your quilt coming along? Go onto the Festival website and make sure you are familiar with the rules and the categories. If you are unsure, phone me or another quilter for some help. Be particularly careful about the sizes. They will be sticky about them for very practical reasons i.e. available space and stand sizes are limiting factors, so you must stay within the sizes specified. PLEASE enter and just do your best quilt. It is not the prizewinning quilts that make a quilt festival, but ALL the quilts that are shown. It would be a hopelessly small and disappointing show if we only saw the prize winners. Remember every time we put our quilts on show, we inspire many people out there and there are always those who will dream of making a quilt "one day". After all, isn't that how many of US became quilters? Have you put in your leave application to the HR Dept/your boss/ your husband? You had better warn all your family and friends that you will be on another planet for that week next July! They had better make their own arrangements for that week. Please spread the news about the Festival far and wide, to ALL your friends and contacts, whether in KZN, the rest of SA, the rest of the world. A chance remark can lead to the making of a new quilter! And tell ALL your overseas contacts what a wonderful place this is for a winter holiday that feels like summer! Happy quilting everyone! A Guide to Successful Quilt Design By Roma Dunn + Aneen Brockett A copy of this excellent book, written by two south African ladies, can be bought by contacting Roma Dunn on 083 627 1207 or 044 5335 9534. She will arrange the sale and will post it to you when you have paid via the internet. Maybe guilds would like to purchase one for their libraries. 7

SAQG REPORT By Marline Turner – KZNQG representative to SAQG Mandy Kirk and I attended this year’s SAQG annual meeting in Sasolburg this year. Here is just a short summary of what was discussed. There was a secret vote from nominations for the next Pro-Dedicate Award. This award will be made at the Creative Energy Festival 2015. A new Port folio with the Youth in mind was created, we are hoping to encourage younger members to our Guilds, It was decided to have a Quilters Hall of Fame that will be put onto the Website. These will be of Quilters who have had great achievements in quilting both in South Africa and Internationally. There was a lot of discussion on how to recognise Teachers who have been established and taught for many years and who are not part of the present Teachers Accreditation Course. Sue Prins will write a letter regarding the process to become a “Recognised Teacher” by SAQG. The cut off date will July 2016. This will be a once off process. From 2017 Festival in Port Elizabeth on SAQG Accredited and Recognised Teachers will be eligible to teach at Festivals. The Quilt Teachers Accreditation Course has been a welcome and very necessary course. From the feed back we have had the students have been really encouraging and complimentary. Although the work load is great there has been much enthusiasm and we the Tutors have also learnt a lot from running this course. Categories Power Point Twig Hartwig and Sue Prins have worked hard on this and it has been of tremendous help to us. Thank you Twig and Sue. This Power Point presentation is available to be downloaded from the SAQG website and can be used at guild meetings. I can highly recommend guilds using it. Community Projects. Once again we have been asked to let SAQG know of anything being done any guilds for the Community, whether it is supplying baby food making of quilts, supplying blankets, or books for libraries. It is good for the sponsors to see that we are involved with the community. Elsa thanked all who attended this 2 day meeting and especially to the Festival Committee for sending Mandy Kirk and her enthusiastic report of the Creative Energy Festival 2015.

Spotlight On…. Moira Ryder A visit to Moira Ryder to hear about her quilting journey is an inspiration. She is a KZNQG mem-

ber as well as a long-standing member of the active Midlands Guild, the first guild in South Africa. Moira does traditional work, “sometimes with a difference”, she says. Moira has literally hundreds of quilts, and has kept virtually all of these. She and her husband have retired to Howick where she now quilts most days; it has been her passion since 1963. She is also interested in gardening and has a superb indigenous garden.

How did this journey start? Moira’s mother did dressmaking and also knitted and embroidered, so she grew up with sewing around her. When she was in her thirties with small children, a friend invited her to a quilting course, which she loved. She has quilted passionately ever since. Before that she had done counted-thread embroidery extensively, but felt that quilting offered more scope for her.

12

WHAT does she quilt? Moira has tried many styles and techniques and has mini-collections of these. She now has several specific interests. She loves antique quilts and is very interested and knowledgeable about quilt history. She is also very keen on scrap (or “multi-fabric”) quilts and loves quilts from the 1930’s, from the Depression era. Their white backgrounds are characteristic. Her vast collection reflects these interests as well as an interest in Amish quilts and African textiles.

How does Moira START? Her bookcase is full of wonderful books which she reads carefully, then gets her

inspiration and ideas from quilts or parts of quilts in these. She does not start the quilt design from scratch herself. Choosing the material then takes a long time as she knows what she likes and takes her time looking for it. She loves reproduction fabrics. Next, she uses a design board, and builds up the quilt gradually, spending days moving pieces around to get the colour and design right before she actually

sews. Dusk is the time she

can get accurate values; since

to her, ‘light, medium and

dark’ is one of the most im-

portant parts of designing

the quilt. Her reducing lens is

valuable in this regard. She

always has several projects

on the go at the same time.

13

And HOW does Moira sew? As a rule, she does all the piecing by machine then does the quilting itself by hand, as she prefers that ‘look’. She described how she is not into quick, savetime-techniques; she still uses a template where possible and draws around it to get a sewing line. She measures and draws out the patterns herself, and often draws the lines onto the quilt top on which to quilt by hand, using ‘invisible’ markers.

How does Moira STORE all these magnificent quilts? In various rooms of the house, her husband has made several stands and wall “racks” onto which she can layer quilt after quilt. This makes them accessible and prevents fading.

Moira herself now does the odd course at a Festival and she does give talks and gives guidance to others at her own guild. To speak to Moira, one can see that its been a creative and fulfilling journey, one that is not ending or even slowing down. It is no wonder that Moira

has won numerous prizes for her quilts both in this country and internationally. There has hardly been a SA National festival without a Moira Ryder winner. She is a valuable member of KZNQG.

Nicky Hunter-Smith (displayed at Sisters Quilt Exhibition 2014)

FAREWELL TO SHIRLEY GROENEWALD It was indeed a sad day on the 16th June when one of our stalwart quilters, Shirley Groenewald, passed away. Shirley started quilting in the 1960’s, then living in Howick . Shirley gave Quilting Classes to many ladies and taught them all she had gleaned from books and magazines. Shirley corresponded with many Quilters from all over the world and gathered many patterns, skills and ideas that she happily taught and passed on. This first little group of quilters called “Dresden Quilters” met at Shirley’s home. During 1970 Shirley visited America where she met with many quilters she had been in contact with. In 1981 Shirley started the Midlands Quilters Guild (the first quilters guild in the country), and they held their first Exhibition in 1983 at the Howick Library. Shirley told us that at that time they had no idea how to hang quilts so they used masking tape to attach them to the walls!!!! Needless to say when they removed the quilts some of the plaster adhered to the tape!!! Nevertheless she was enthusiastic and determined and put on a show every year, even to having exhibitions in the Tatham Gallery and the Old Main Hall at the Natal University. Shirley was on the Steering Committee under the Chairmanship of Rosalie Dace to form the Natal Quilters Guild in February 1989. We honour you Shirley and thank you all you have taught to so many quilters. Shirley’s death is a great loss to Quilting in not only Kwa Zulu-Natal but South Africa.

Condolences to Annette Lee and Joan, her mom, (our former editor and helper) on the passing of their dad and husband recently. We are so sorry for your loss.

Grassroots Quilters Guild In May we had Neil Stuart-Harris speak to us on preventative conservation of textiles. He is a costume designer and dressmaker and works for the local history museum where his job is to preserve textiles. June we had our AGM and the committee have decided to stay on for one more year. In June we had Odette give us a powerpoint presentation of her travels and tours around South Africa which she does for overseas visitors and quilters. Absolutely fabulous. In July we had Tara show us how to negotiate our way around the KZNQG website. I know she taught me a thing or two, and quite a few members had their notebooks out, taking notes. We’ve had some really interesting speakers this year, and have more in the pipeline for the next few months.

Our hamper of baby products was won by Marline Turner’s granddaughter and we raised R465.00 with this raffle. Definitely far below the value of the hamper as the items were beautiful. The granddaughter does not have any children and is not yet married, and her mother has warned Marline to keep the hamper far away from her. We had a wonderfully successful quilt show in Kloof in May, (that is, Grassroots, Village Quilters and Kloof Country Quilters. The hall was buzzing and the vibe was fantastic. Lots of vendors, a tea garden, lots of beautiful quilts, and of course, our American Auction which raised just under R10 000. In total we raised R18500 for the festival. We are still working away at Jane’s Magical Mystery tour challenge and will finalise it in November. Besides Jane’s challenge, we have other challenges happening as well. All members are busy making inchies and twinchies for the festival goodie bags. We are also making Artist Trading Cards (postcard size) for the Tombola. They will be used for consolation prizes. LYN GONZAGA

QUEENSBURGH QUILTERS This year is simply flying by! Our little Guild has been very busy making our contribution to the Goody Bags for the Festival. We have finally got all 1100 finished and they are all packed into their plastic bags and ready to go! There is something else we are going to donate but that can be done closer to the time! We contributed quilts to Tollgate for their Go Green Quilt Show in June. Rosemary Hurter and her daughter, Kerenza Richter, attended the some of the workshops in Clarens and thoroughly enjoyed their getaway! Annette Lee and Leanne Stewart went up to Johannesburg for the IQC Quilt Festival which they enjoyed too. Magda Lombard celebrated her 60th Birthday in style last month and held a wonderful tea party which we all attended! Her birthday cake in the shape of a pink teapot was a work of art! She is looking forward to retirement very soon and we are all wondering just how much more productive she could possibly be when she has more time on her hands! Some of us are already working on our entries for our Festival – our creative energy is being put to good use! One of our members, Wendy Moult, has returned to Durban after having lived in Sierra Leone for a while. Now that her husband has retired, she will happily be living in Durban once again. LOVE2PATCH: NEW GUILD In the Dundee area, a new guild has been started. The chairlady is Marilie Bruyns and the “main aunties are Sonya Kelbrinck, Zelda Welmann, Dalene Botes, Paula Kelbrick, Lynn Breedt and a 13 yr old: Rachel Steenkamp. Elaine Barnard was the guest speaker at the first meeting and Brother Daniel opened and blessed the meeting and guild. Marline Turner was there; it is her beautiful quilt in the background of the photo at their first meeting. I am sure all KZNQG guilds wish them well.

Quilters by the Sea “So…….Who gets all my Stuff?” I haven’t been well for quite a while now, and when one reaches the 3 score years and 10 mark, mortality starts to become quite an important factor! So….who gets all my stuff? I remember an old lady who used to put stickers under every ornament, clock and piece of furniture… “This belongs to Pam” etc. so there was no fight over the family silver/jewels. Go on, admit it, you have all had designs on Granny’s ring or that Tinus de Jongh painting. But, what I am concerned about is all my Stuff, which is precious to me, but doesn’t mean a row of beans to the children/husband/grandchildren. All those carefully folded and colour coordinated fat quarters, offcuts, embroidery threads, rulers and accessories (most of which, would probably be hard to identify) which give us so much pleasure and satisfaction, would be useless to most people!! MY STUFF! So, SORT IT OUT NOW,and follow the old lady’s example, label it and make life easier when the time comes for your loved ones! By the way, I don’t plan on going anywhere any time soon! Thanks to one of my fellow Quilters, Sandy Gibbs ( a former cardiologist nursing sister) who saw me struggling over a period of time to hold it together at the Guild meetings, and recommended “get yourself off to a cardiologist ASAP!”

So….who gets all my Stuff? Well I have a few ideas and am busy doing some tidying up and labeling in the meantime!! Sandy

TOLLGATE QUILTERS GUILD Wow the year is just flying by and it is August already. Our “Go Green” Show was a resounding success. The hall looked beautiful with all the lovely quilts on display. We had sales tables, raffles and quilt shops there for the quilters to enjoy shopping. The mini workshops and demonstrations were very well attended and we hope that they help to spread the word of quilting to some of the soon-to-be-quilters out there. Remember every “non-quilter” is just a Quilter waiting to be shown the way. Of course, we also had lots of lovely eats, tea and coffee for when the hunger struck us. We Were able to Donate R4000 to the Festival funds. . The photos below were all taken at GO GREEN. Phil Fisher took us through Foundation Piecing at our May meeting giving us lots of tips and hints to make it easier. At our July “Movie Night” we saw some really informative DVD’s on quilting. We were also treated to a wonderful presentation by Beverly-Ann Fink, on her and Helen McNulty’s 250km pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. What an amazing time they had - 250km on foot and carrying everything in their backpacks! Well done Beverly-Ann and Helen, you are absolute stars. The Tollgate Quilters have been very busy quilters and we all really MARY CHAPMAN

Cottage Patch Quilters Guild Our monthly meetings are always well supported and our “show and tell” section of the meeting proves how talented and hardworking our ladies are Our Community Quilters have been hard at work and another two houses at Mother of Peace have received their colourful quilts. (see below) There are also some busy knitters amongst us who help provide the infants of the Ingwavuma area with warm woollen outfits on a monthly basis. (Thanks to René Solomon and her husband.) Each month Vereker delivers the next instalment of appliqué designs to those who attended her workshops and who are keen to take up Marline’s Challenge. The ladies who attended Anna’s workshop to create a Topiary Tree using Suffolk puffs thoroughly enjoyed their morning. In May, Lynda Estement showed us that we need not discard any fabric, as it can be used to create our own fabric. (I now have another kind of stash!) In June, Desny and the Thursday Thimble Ladies wowed us with their individual stories and their creative craftwork. And in July, Sue Cameron brought us her amazing collection of quilts. Our Izotsha Raffle was won by Marian Watson and those ladies who are attending this weekend getaway are looking forward to their ‘Time Out’ in September. September will be a busy time for us, as once again, we will be showcasing our members quilts at the Craft Fair. This event is to be held at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Riverside Road, Amanzimtoti on the 27th September. We plan to raffle a quilt, have ladies demonstrating their work and hope to have a Sales Table. Hazel Nunes

HIBISCUS QUILTERS GUILD At last the cooler months have arrived and as I can see from our Show and Tell wall at our meetings, our quilters energy levels are up. There have been some lovely quilts and quilted items made and shown. We had a lovely surprise visit by one of the Village residents Mr. Dave le Roux. He saw our banner outside and came in to show us a quilt made by his great grandmother. The writing on the quilt says it was made on 31st March 1885.It was machine sewn, probably on one of those old treadle machines, and one wonders where the fabric came from. It was wonderful to see and in fairly good condition. We could recognize many of the patterns used in the quilt. In April we had a collection of four demonstrations. There were pin cushions, owl book marks , embellishing on fabric with cord, wool, ribbon etc and how to cut strips in a special way that formed a cross when sewn together. In May we spent a lovely morning with our visitors from Durban, Twig, Helen, Ruth and Colleen. They spoke about the festival and then showed us some of their quilts, a wonderful inspiration and learning curve for everyone. In June, we had a needle turn workshop using freezer paper. Members were all given a kit and the results were wonderful, everyone went home with a needle turned apple. We have all been busy with making the 1200 scissor keepers that we committed our guild to make for the festival. We held a few workshops, and are now in the final stages of attaching labels. It has been a hard struggle, but they are all lovingly made and something to be proud of. This guild has a wonderful committee and good leadership, we look forward to a happy and interesting next few months. Althea Fairlie, (Scribe)

KLOOF COUNTRY QUILTERS When the Teddy Bears have a picnic, it is fun, but when they see the Kloof Country Quilters arriving for their Picnic, the Teddy Bears go into hiding, they hate to be outdone. The picnic at the SPCA was a wonderfully relaxed morning. Everyone brought some handwork and after a quick meeting, with no agenda – and some forgotten items – we had tea and then settled down to listen to Mervyn our entertainer. Our feet were tapping, our hands were clapping, our voices were angelic in song!!!!! Well that is how it seemed to me. Eventually we could not hold ourselves back and the dance floor beckoned. Sadly it was a little too late, but we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. We have an annual picnic just before our Annual General Meeting, a really nice way to end a very busy year. It is always relaxed and a lot of fun. Our Guild has had a busy year and a fun filled year. We have learned a lot, shared a lot and quilted a lot. The last challenge saw some wonderful ideas – a table runner using the initial of your name for the design or colour. I am so pleased that I was not the judge. Very difficult to choose when you have twenty seven runners all saying – “pick me, pick me, pick me”! As the Guild year draws to a close, I look forward to listening, learning and being part of the audience again. I wish all at Kloof Country Quilters everything of the best and thank each member for their love and support over the past two years. Ciao. Desny Littlejohn

VILLAGE QUILTERS, KLOOF Busy as usual! After a successful joint Quilt Show at the Kloof Civic Hall in May, where around R20 000 was raised for Festival funds, we at Village Quilters went straight into our May meeting where we were treated to Marie Peacey’s beautiful and colourful mola work with all its detailed embroidery and fascinating printed fabrics. This was in contrast to the muted and subtle shades shown us by Dawn Owen as she discussed her love of Japanese fabric. And finally we marvelled at Pam Horne’s amazing handmade dolls – her skill and patience in making these dolls is inspirational! At the June meeting, Colleen Roberts showed us how she squares off a quilt using a chalk string line, and then Marge Gatter motivated us all to get stuck into making Luscious Little Layerings by giving us a demo of one of her techniques which involved cutting up other (discarded) projects. The sky’s the limit! After tea we sat back and marvelled at quilt after quilt shown us by Odette Tolksdorf. What a treat it was – such colours and skill and artistry! July’s meeting was a double whammy – two speakers in the persons of Thalia Griffen and Mary Chapman, founders of the Izotsha Escape! What a wealth of crafted items were on show, ranging from waistcoats to teddies, from traditional to modern – we were blown away by these two clever ladies. So we are headed into the last part of the quilting year now and looking forward to many more exciting meetings and challenges along the way. Brenda Morris
