Greetings, and welcome to Watertown, South Dakota! You will find that this friendly attitude permeates our entire community. We are a vibrant, growing city with a thriving economy based upon hundreds of local businesses and the fact that we are the hub for all of northeast South Dakota. We offer a variety of shopping options, from locally-owned stores to large chains. We have tantalizing culinary options with award-winning restaurants recognized at worldwide competitions as among the best in the nation. Watertown is also known as a live music mecca with concerts every week in the summer at our showcase downtown park. The music continues year-round at one of our many private and public options, including inside the historic century-old beauty of the Goss Opera House. From classical to rock, from local bands to top-40 legends, Watertown offers something for everyone.
The quality of life in Watertown is fantastic. Our city government invests heavily into public improvements, including the aforementioned downtown park and Goss Opera House, a wellness center, a multi-sheet ice arena, and a state-of-the-art airport connecting Watertown to the world.
The City of Watertown employs hundreds of wonderful people tasked to dozens of departments all working together to assure the community is run well and efficiently. If you’re looking for fun, our Parks & Recreation department maintains a myriad of quality-of-life amenities including nearly 100 miles of trails, youth and adult sports, tennis and pickleball courts, along with camping, activities and beaches at the two lakes within city limits.
So, whatever you are looking for, we hope you find our visitor guide as helpful and hospitable as we all are when you meet us face-to-face. Whether you are here for only a day, or looking to stay for a lifetime, we welcome you to Watertown!
Mayor Ried Holien
The answer is simple - ample opportunity and abundant possiblities. Businesses thrive in Watertown thanks to our strong workforce, low taxes and low cost of doing business. This is where familiar favorites meet locally owned restaraunts and boutiques.
Nestled between two lakes, Watertown has excellent outdoor recreation, hunting and fishing opportunities. Our neighborhoods are clean, quiet and safe. Our school district is one of the best in the state and our hospital is the largest privately owned facility in South Dakota.
Watertown is the fourth largest community in the state, with an estimated population of 23,019. Platted in 1878, Watertown was named after Watertown, NY, the former home of one of its early settlers. The name fits well, as we are located in South Daktoa’s Glacial Lakes region, right between Lake Kampeska and Pelican Lake.
Watertown is served by two full-time fire departments, police force and the Codington County Sheriff’s Office. Watertown Fire Rescue has ten trucks including a snorkel platform and two airport crash trucks. The department operates an emergency ambulance service and has four fully equipped ambulances.
South Dakota has no corporate income tax, no inventory tax, no personal income tax, no personal property tax and no inheritance tax.
Watertown is in the heart of the High Plains Region and has four distinct seasons. Our hot summer weather is perfect for water sports while winter provides enough snow and cold for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Autumn is filled with color and some of the best pheasant and waterfowl hunting in the nation.

Joy Ranch has a barn full of horses but there is more beyond the corral gates than meets the eye! The 126-acre ranch is nestled between prairie hills on the picturesque shores of Lake Lyle, just outside of Watertown. It’s more than a ranch…it is a retreat and conference center, a destination for persons with disabilities, as well as a venue for equine events, weddings, family reunions, camping, birthdays, and more.
Built as an 1880s prairie town, complete with a main street, bunk house, hotel rooms, a historic church, and school house, plus the “Thirsty Boot Saloon,” the atmosphere of the ranch allows visitors to meet the “old west” head on and take part in activities and planned events such as trail rides, hiking, camping, and kayaking.
Configured to host simultaneous events and small and large gatherings, you’ll find multiple conference rooms, a 250-person capacity main dining room, and a commercial kitchen on the site. An adept and experienced staff is available to help you plan, resource, and execute your unique or specialized event year round.
For those with disabilities or challenging life circumstances, Joy Ranch is a safe haven! The ranch offers a barrier-free environment that everyone can access. No one is sidelined at Joy Ranch!
For the general public, Joy Ranch offers unique facilities to host a wedding, family reunion, or corporate retreat! While here, take a wagon ride, or sleigh ride, hop on a horse, explore the 1880’s town, and experience everything the ranch has to offer. Spectacular sunsets are included with every stay!
The Watertown Family Aquatic Center features a bath house with concessions, family changing rooms, and a three pool complex including a main pool with zero depth entry, lap area, floatable, 3/4 meter diving board, drop slide, water walk, frog slide, in-water playground and four additional interactive play features.
Take a leisurely float down the 550 foot lazy river on a single tube, or float with a friend on the double tubes. But be careful, the overhead tumble-buckets and the river falls feature are ready to douse you with water when you least expect it!
There is a special place built just for young children. The completely zero-depth entry adventure pool boasts four interactive play features to keep the young ones cool in the Watertown sun. The maximum depth is only 1” to ensure the safety of the little ones.
Looking for more? Cruise on over to the beach-like sand play area, where you will find play structures, water, buckets and shovels to create wonderful castles and more.
For those who are craving the true thrill of water, speed down one of our three slides: fly down the open flume body slide,
try the heart pounding, totally enclosed flume slide, or start your lazy river trip with a ride down our tube slide.
No matter what level of fun you are looking for, you will find it at the Aquatic Center. It is truly focused on being a family experience that you will want to relive over and over!
Arthur Calvin Mellette (23 June 1842 - 25 May 1896) had the distinction of serving as the last governor of Dakota Territory and the first governor of the state of South Dakota.
In 1878, Mellette was appointed registrar of the land office in Springfield, Dakota Territory, and when the land office was moved to Watertown in May 1880, he and his family followed. In 1889 President Benjamin Harrison appointed Mellette governor of Dakota Territory, and later that same year, when South Dakota entered the union, he was elected the first governor of South Dakota.
The home Arthur and his wife, Maggie, built on Prospect Hill is now beautifully restored and furnished, almost precisely as the Mellette family knew it and lived in it. Once inside the door, visitors will step into early day Dakota. During the 1880’s and 1890’s many receptions and social gatherings graced this beautiful home. Dignitaries, political associates and friends were frequent visitors of the family. We encourage you to enjoy a step back in time with us at the Mellette House.

The Redlin Art Center opened in 1997 and was Terry Redlin’s gift to his hometown. It was his way of repaying a scholarship he was awarded after a life-changing accident altered his career path when he was 15 years old. The center was built to attract Redlin fans and art enthusiasts to the place that inspired so many of the paintings; art that beautifully and poignantly captures, on canvas, the family traditions and memories so many of us share.
In a gallery filled with over 160 original oil paintings, the traditions captured in each beautiful scene invite us to take a walk down memory lane. The soft glow of lamplight, the crackling of a bonfire, the jingle of sleigh bells, the laughter of children, the excitement of gift giving, the kindness of neighbors, the love of family and friends….Terry Redlin’s art reminds us to enjoy all of life’s simple pleasures.
The Redlin Art Center’s gallery and gift shops are open year round. Admission is free.

Glacial Lakes Distillery was started by three guys from Watertown who have a passion for creating high-quality spirits. Inspired by a simpler time when quality meant something and beautiful handmade wooden boats raced across the Great Lakes and Glacial Lakes of the Upper Midwest. Just as the craftsmen who built those beautiful boats, the guys at Glacial Lakes Distillery are committed to creating a high-quality, hand-crafted spirit that will leave you nodding in approval. Glacial Lakes Distillery started with vodka, but now also hand crafts rum, gin, and brandy. Glacial Lakes Vodka starts with quality ingredients. Wheat, grown locally, and pure clean water from the Glacial Lakes Region. It’s then distilled in small batches, one mason jar at a time. By hand-crafting their vodka they make sure they get the best cut of the run, which means that only the best of each batch goes in our bottles. It’s pure grain to glass!

AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A NATIONAL LEADER IN EDUCATION
Organized in 1965, Lake Area Technical College has acquired a litany of accomplishments and one of greatest notoriety has been the recognition of being the top, two-year college in the nation by the Aspen Institute Community College Excellence program. As a consistently high ranked Military Friendly School and many more state and national accolades, not to mention 31 cutting-edge programs of study, exciting campus expansion projects, record numbers of students, and one of the highest retention rates in the nation, Lake Area Technical College is certainly busting at the seams with good news!
Most notable was Lake Area Technical College’s 2015 Commencement Address given by President Barack Obama. This was only the 93rd Address given in US history by a sitting President. President Obama noted, “…there are few community colleges that are as important as Lake Area Tech. This school is leading the way. Compared with other community colleges, the graduation rate is more than three times the national average. Three times. Within six months, 99 percent of those graduates are either employed or continuing their education. The average Lake Area Tech graduate who enters the workforce earns nearly 50 percent more than other new hires in this region.”
Annually, over 2,600 students call Lake Area Tech College home and are drawn to the schools’ national rankings, diverse training programs, 99% graduate placement rate, and the overall return on their investment. Students participate in a host of student activities and intramurals as well as student and professional organizations. Additionally, Lake Area Tech offers competitive sports in NJCAA eSports, NIRA Rodeo, and the USA College Clay Target League. Students can also participate in Campus Crusades, and so much more.
Being proactive, cutting-edge, industry facing, and always providing what is the best solutions for the students is the Lake Area Tech mission. With a close eye on workforce needs and student opportunities, the college has created programs that are relevant and high-demand.
Lake Area Technical College is one of the most respected two-year colleges in the nation. Located in Watertown, SD, the campus sits on 40 plus acres of land and continues to expand as student enrollment climbs and technology and workforce needs increase.
In 1965, economic drivers of technical education in South Dakota unanimously voted to create the first technical institute in Watertown, with others to follow in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Beginning with one program of study and 16 students, Lake Area Tech has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time.
Students who attend Lake Area Technical College earn a quality education, backed by the Higher Learning Commission Accreditation. Many of the programs of study have also acquired a professional accreditation in their field of study.
Lake Area Technical College understands that time and financial resources are valuable. At Lake Area Tech you can receive a degree or diploma in 9-20 months. The education and training the students receive, is affordable and an excellent return on investment. With no out-of-state tuition, over 400 general scholarships and 130 full-ride scholarships awarded annually, many students can graduate debt-free or with little money owed and have a coveted skill in their “tool box”. Additionally, students who have previous dual credit or college courses to transfer may be given college credit allowing them more time for their studies and a savings of money on tuition.
Whatever the field of study, students will gain practical hands-on knowledge that will give them the competitive edge and know-how when they enter the job market. Employers locally, regionally and nationally rely on Lake Area Tech to supply them with a workforce that understands technology and can go to work with their company without having to invest in additional training time.
Although Lake Area Tech has only been in existence since 1965, its presence has been loud and clear. Alumni, students, parents, educators, and employers recognize the quality of craftsmanship. All are sharing their Lake Area Tech success stories, writing their own, or encouraging the next generation to do the same.
The legacy of pride continues as alumni are returning in record numbers to teach, serve on advisory boards, get involved with the Alumni Association, hire the graduates, are employed as staff and administrators, and give back to their programs and the college.
