THE GREAT LAKE
from 2023 Duluth Visitor Guide
by digital
For nearly 14,000 years, Indigenous peoples have lived at the end of Gichigami—the great lake. Lake Superior has long been a resource both bountiful and beautiful— sacred and inseparable from those who did and continue to call it home.
Incorporated in 1856, the city of Duluth, Minnesota, quickly became a shipping leader thanks to the grit and ingenuity of its industrious inhabitants. Today, Duluth is the biggest inland harbor in the world despite being 600 feet above sea level and over 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
Lake Superior also provides Duluth with endless recreation. Swimming, boating, fishing, sailing, paddleboarding and even surfing, if the weather is right. More importantly, Lake Superior provides Duluth with its identity—inspiring, surprising, uncompromising.
When you’re here, the lake is never far away. Always ready to inspire and entertain. Scan the QR code to learn more about the opportunities Lake Superior provides.
