The Future

“Hurry Up, We are going to be late!” barked Amelia as if she was the eldest sibling. “I’m coming; I just need to…..almost….there I got it. Here, take it.” Spencer tossed a large red apple down for the tree to his younger sister while he slithers down the tree to the tall green grass. The two take off running on the winding red clay road towards their home. Sneaking into the orchards on their walk home from school had become a ritual for these two. Their family had just moved from Iowa to Georgia, their father’s company had relocated him to help set up the company in their new location, an industrial park not far from their new house. Their mother has just gotten a job teaching at the local college about a 5 minute walk from their new home. Spencer and Amelia were sad to leave their old town, their old friends and their old rooms. But mom and dad had promised that the new town, and their new home would be a great adventure. Spencer had run into their new house -white cottage style home, right past the red wooden door with a grand front porch that looked onto the street up the stairs and proclaimed the bedroom to the left of the stairs was to be his. Amelia had followed but had proclaimed the room to the right of the stairs to be hers. Spencer gazed out his window thinking to himself “how will I ever make new friends” just then in the backyard of the house next door he could see a boy about his age playing with a puppy. He ran into Amelia’s room to tell her the good news of their being neighborhood kids but she was transfixed on the image out here window- rows of orchard tree and plants pepper with people working, a large red barn in the distance and animals- cows, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens. Spencer and Amelia were entranced by this place- the bucolic country side had come to life and it was now going to be part of their life. As the two finished their apples- the walked past the neighborhood, their neighborhood- they were still getting use to the rows of craftsmen homes, tree lined streets and sidewalks. They were learning their neighbor’s names and faces with ease. They walked up the steps, opened the front door and proclaimed ‘’mom, dad we’re home” but no answer. Amelia slung her book bag onto the wooden floor and walked into the kitchen. Spencer raced up to his room. On the kitchen counter was a note from mom saying that she would be home at 6:00, she had a “jam session” at the community center. Mom had signed up to learn to make preserves from this year’s berry harvest. The note also instructed them to meet their father at The Stand once they had gotten home from school. Amelia yelled to Spencer to grab his bike so they could go meet dad. Amelia and Spencer loved riding their bikes- here they did not have to worry about cars like they did back in Iowa, in fact most people walked or biked here. Once at the Stand they walked by isles of fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and cheeses- all grown in their neighborhood. The Stand was bustling with energy- people working, eating, buying and selling, chatting and laughing. The Stand was a place that made them smile and place to meet and see people. Spencer spotted the boy from next door and walked over to introduce himself and Amelia followed. Leah Graham Stewart 8.22.2010 PLAN 6560
