COSTUME DRAMA

UNISEX SCENTS

THE latest collections were full of chunky costume jewellery, from Burberry Prorsum’s giant amber pieces to Vera Wang’s bejewelled plait chains and Missoni breastplates. London-based designer Mawi creates quirky, fun baubles mixing bling with chunky gold chains and oversize crystals. At Liberty, Harvey Nichols and Net-a-porter.com

THE days of proudly brandishing Paddingtons, Spys, Stams, Murakamis and Roxannes are over. For summer, it’s all about subtle style, with independent designers such as Kara Ross, Safor, Corto Moltedo, Devi Kroell, Treesje and ex-Marc Jacobs designer Joy Gryson. Failing that, get the ultimate It-bag — the Hermes Birkin (pictured).

FAKING IT A-LIST STYLE THE UK’s favourite tanning product is back to the fore this summer with a hot new ad campaign shot by top photographer Solve Sundsbo — and a host of new products including Rapide Face, a superfast facial tanner for evenings out. The market may be flooded with High Street tanners, but celebrities such as Sienna Miller still stay true to the brand, not to mention fashion designer fans Luella Bartley and Christopher Kane. www.st-tropez.co.uk

FACING THE MUSICAL THE makers of West End hits Miss Saigon and Les Miserables return this month with the launch of Marguerite, starring award-winning Ruthie Henshall, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. The musical is a love story set in Paris during World War II, and is inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s La Dame aux Camélias. Musical-lovers are quivering in anticipation. www.marguerite-themusical.com

HIGH STREET HIGH FASHION FASHION editors have been fighting over Danielle Scutt’s edgy creations since the designer debuted at London Fashion Week in 2005. But they’ll soon be able to get the look with greater ease. Scutt has designed a capsule range for Topshop, which is in branches from June. www.topshop.com; tel. 020 7636 7700.

UP-TO-THE-MINUTE PROM WITH the wedding season upon us, why not rock the prom queen vibe with a tip from model-of-themoment Agyness Deyn? Style pages went mad for the Betsey Johnson number she sported for a recent i-D magazine shoot. Or try London boutique Koh Samui, which counts Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst as fans, and has vintage versions alongside its designer collections. Betsey Johnson: 020 7240 6164. LIF BAG LADY

GLAM GLOUCS

SHE may be synonymous with her iconic print laminated canvas bags, but Orla Kiely has been quietly building up a cult ready-towear collection and luxury range of leather accessories. This summer, it’s all about her oversize patent linked leather totes, which start at £278, in Keily signature bright colours.

BEVERLY Hills has a new rival — Gloucestershire, which these days is packed with celeb haunts as well as royals. Damien Hirst, Kate Moss, Pearl Lowe, Liz Hurley (right) and Stella McCartney all have houses there. The area is so jammed with glitterati that in March local entrepreneurs launched Jillywood (after writer Jilly Cooper), a celebrityspotting coach tour.

IT’S HOT TO HIKE HIKING is all the rage among the Hollywood glitterati — so much so that there was outcry when it was reported that the land above the LA ‘Hollywood’ sign — a favourite hikers’ haunt — had been put on the market. Meanwhile, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays are re-branding for the younger market.

ECO-CONSCIOUS TRAVEL

MULBERRY BRANCHES OUT EMMA HILL’S hotly anticipated debut collection for Mulberry launches in September. Hill took over from Katie Grand in December, and boasts pretty impressive credentials (lines for Gap, Chloe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein and Burberry, with a few It-bags along the way). Accessory-addicts can hardly wait. www.mulberry.com

SHORT-HAUL flights are becoming an eco-social faux pas. Taxis too. But with the new Eurostar terminal at London’s St Pancras having the world’s longest champagne bar, rail travel has become convenient and glamorous. If a taxi can’t be avoided, eco car services such as Gogreencar.com is an option. Their vehicles emit 60 per cent less pollutants than regular taxis. And for local hops, make like a celebrity, or Viscount Linley (left), and hop on your bike.

HOT HOT HOT!

JIGSAW’S MAKEOVER SUDDENLY find yourself falling back in love with Jigsaw? So did we. It’s thanks to new creative director Louise Trotter, who has injected a funky edge. Jigsaw’s collection includes graphic prints, bold shades and chunky wooden jewellery. www.jigsawonline.com

The company has just signed Hussein Chalayan to be creative director, with Paulo Nutini as its poster-boy for spring. Watch this space. www.puma.com

GIRLS DO MUSIC ISN’T it enough that one is a hot Hollywood starlet and the other a global supermodel? Clearly not. Now they want to sing, too. This month, actress Scarlett Johansson, left, added another string to her bow with Anywhere I Lay My Head, a compilation of Tom Waits covers, while model Agyness Deyn recently sang vocals on the single Who with the Five O'Clock Heroes, and is said to have formed her own band.

CHIC SHADES DESPITE the weather, the British know how to do shades. Cult designer Oliver Goldsmith is now offering a service through London boutique Matches for bespoke sunglasses, and has also created an exclusive design for Harvey Nichols. Vintage eyewear company Cutler & Gross is behind the new hip Mulberry sunglasses collection.

FE style LALA LAND

YUMMY MUMMIES

MISS LALA’S BOUDOIR — the lingerie boutique in London’s leafy Primrose Hill — is already a must-go destination for celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Helena Bonham Carter and Amy Winehouse. The store has already created its own lingerie label, Miss Lala Presents (think girly, retro, luxurious), which launched in Harvey Nichols in December, and now plans to open two London flagship stores this year. www.misslalas boudoir.co.uk

IT’S official — this is the age of the Yummy Mummy. The market for luxury maternity and childbirth products has blossomed, while The Kitchen Table Tycoon: How To Make It Work As A Mother And An Entrepreneur was published in March. Written by Anita Naik, it advises women on combining running a business with family life. Last month, Cupcake, a new brand of private members’ club and spa, devoted to mothers and mothers-to-be, opened in South West London. Brands such as Mama Mio, which has recently expanded its luxury range of maternity beauty products, have also been booming. www.cupcakemum.com; www.mamamio.co.uk

IN THE CLUB THIS summer, it’s all about private members’ clubs. At Cannes, The Hospital Club is opening its own temporary outpost, plus branches in New York and Berlin, with a further addition in Shanghai planned for 2009. Home House, which recently bought an outpost in Edinburgh, is now expanding into the Portman Square town house next door. Soho House LA opens this year, with Miami shortly after, and soon Brixton will receive its own music-based club Dex. The Kingly

The range is to celebrate Hackett's 25th anniversary. www.aquascutum.com www.hackett.com

RED HOT GEMMA ARTERTON (left) is so hot she received a personal invite from Marc Jacobs to see his Louis Vuitton show in Paris this February. After turning heads in St Trinian’s, the actress is to star as Bond Girl Agent Fields in Quantum Of Solace. She’s also playing Tess in the BBC’s winter period blockbuster, Tess Of The d'Urbervilles.

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE SIMON DOONAN’S memoirs have already caused such a stir that the TV rights have been snapped up by the producers of The Office. In Beautiful People, out earlier this month, the style columnist and former creative director at Barneys describes with comic candour his childhood in Reading and journey to the bright lights of London and New York.

FASHION-LOVING brides have never had so much choice, with a growing number of fashion label bridal collections. In March, Lanvin’s bridal range launched at Dover Street Market in London. Meanwhile, Jenny Packham’s bridal designs have been so popular she opened a separate bridal boutique in 2006, followed by a bridal accessories store last year. Similarly, Temperley’s bridal collection (right) is growing rapidly, alongside a bespoke bridal service. Next up, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman is launching her own bridal line. Marchesa counts Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Renee Zellweger among its fans. Chapman has reportedly created Coleen McLoughlin’s dress for her summer nuptials.

ETHICAL FASHION ETHICAL clothing is moving away from its earnest origins as chic new labels launch on to the market. Nowhere more so than with Stella McCartney, who in June will bring her luxury organic Eco-Collection to Harvey Nichols and her Bruton Street flagship store. www.stellamccartney.com

THE EDGE OF LOVE KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, Sienna Miller (right) and Cillian Murphy star in The Edge Of Love this summer — a biopic based on the life and loves of poet Dylan Thomas. The film opens in June and has been scripted by Sharman Macdonald, Knightley’s mother. A must-see.
