O sr. Valéry queria uma casa de férias. Mas ele não queria uma casa qualquer! Na casa do sr. Valéry devia entrar-se por qualquer lado e ser sempre igual. Devia ser como uma torre - feita para ver tudo - onde existissem somente portas e o sr. Valéry pudesse evitar perder-se em compartimentos. Não eram muitas exigências... afinal, era uma casa de férias simples. O sr. Valéry era apenas alguém que pensava muito. Mr. Valéry wanted a holiday home. But he didn’t want just any holiday home! In Mr. Valéry’s house one should be able to enter through any of the sides and it should always be the same. It should be like a tower - designed to see all - where there would only exist doors and Mr. Valéry could avoid losing himself in compartments. Those were not that many demands... afterall, it was a simple holiday home. Mr. Valéry was just someone used to doing a great deal of thinking.

A ÁRVORE É O CENTRO THE TREE IN THE CENTER A árvore faz parte da casa, é da casa. A árvore é o animal de estimação que o Sr. Valéry guarda numa caixa. E essa caixa explode e, dessa caixa o Sr. Valéry vê tudo à sua volta, sendo de cada lado uma vista diferente. The tree is part of the house, it is the house. The tree is the pet Mr. Valéry keeps in a box. That box explodes and, from that box, Mr. Valéry sees everything surrounding him, and from each side of that box there is a different view to what is around it.

O quarto, a zona de dormir, não pode ser um local que enfraqueça a visibilidade que o Sr. Valéry tem para o exterior. De lá ele tem de continuar a poder ver tudo. Assim, junto à cama está uma abertura por onde se vê a envolvente e, através de outras aberturas a árvore mantém-se presente também nesta divisão da casa. The bedroom (the sleeping area) can’t be a weak spot in Mr. Valéry’s view to the outside. From there he has to continue to be able to see everything.. Therefore, there is a window near the bed from where the surroundings can be seen and, through other windows the tree is also present in the room.

Habitação para estudantes de arquitetura assente numa base modular 3x3. Sítio de implantação: terreno extenso e preenchido com vários muros de diferentes altimetrias. Programa: 3 espaços de uso individual (células individuais) com zona para dormir, área de trabalho e instalações sanitárias; conjunto de espaços de uso comum com sala de estar e trabalho, zona de refeições, cozinha, lavandaria e lavabos; recinto exterior de uso flexível (zona de animação/festas com 1 lugar de estacionamento). House for architecture students based on a modular 3x3 design. Site for location: extended land area with several walls across it. Areas intended: 3 individual usage spaces (individual cells) with sleeping area, working area and bathrooms; common-use space with living/working room, eating area, kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms; exterior flexible usage area (animation/ party area with 1 parking spot). * Maquete final Final model

Project strategy: - use as much length of the location site as possible; - locate the house close to the campus to enable an inner site lifestyle, with the location site as a whole. Create an organizing wall which structures all the functional space scheme of the house. Due to its position in the location site, this wall generates an idea of tension:

Conceito | Concept A estratégia para o projeto é: - usar o terreno na máxima extensão possível; e, - localizar a habitação próxima ao campus para possibilitar uma vivência mais interior do terreno, como um todo. Cria-se um muro organizador que estrutura todo o esquema espacial e programático da casa. Devido à sua posição no terreno, este muro leva a uma ideia de tensão: Duas forças na mesma direção mas em sentidos opostos. São essas forças que geram o núcleo (área comum) que depois explode para o terreno, originando espaço para o restante programa em zona interior (células individuais). Por fim, esta explosão longitudinal no terreno é atenuada e fecha sobre a zona de festas, redirecionando a proposta para o núcleo. O espaço interior articula-se com estes princípios: ele filtra o terreno numa linha também longitudinal que ao embater no muro criado quebra e eleva-se, formando uma variação altimétrica (cozinha e zona de refeições). Nas células individuais permanece o rasgo contínuo de filtro do terreno: - num nível inferior, permite relacionar diretamente a área de trabalho com a zona de festas e parte do terreno; - e ao nível superior, relaciona as células com a rampa que acompanha o muro (entre interioridade, de intimidade, de prospeção).

Two forces in opposite directions. These forces create the main core (common area) which then explodes onto the site, originating room for all other inner area programs (individual cells). Finally, this longitudinal explosion on site slows down and closes upon the exterior/ party area, redirecting the proposal back to its core. The interior space is articulated with these principles: it filters the site in a longitudinal line also, which when it reaches the wall creates breaks and elevates, forming an altimetric variation (kitchen and eating area). In the case of the individual cells, that continuous filter is maintained: - at a lower level, it allows to directly relate the work area with the party area and a portion of the site; - and at an upper level, it creates a relation the cells with the ramp accompanying the main wall (between interior space, space of intimacy, of prospection).

O muro criado que é base para a proposta é também janela para a envolvente, através de aberturas que querem ser respiros e espreitar o que a envolve. The wall created and upon which all of the project proposal is based, is also a window to the surrounding area, through the openings looking like small gasps and peek what surrounds it.

SÍTIO E PROGRAMA LOCATION AND USAGE O exercício é desenhar habitação coletiva, interpretando-a como relação entre tecido urbano e espaço doméstico. Explora-se o desenho de projeto abordando dois pontos: - a forma urbana dando respostas às condicionantes particulares de um contexto heterogéneo; e, - o espaço doméstico desenhado genericamente para atender à diversidade de modos de vida. Tendo por base a Unité d’Habitation de Marseillle desenhada por Le Corbusier, há uma reinterpretação da sua área e do seu programa em pequenas unidades de escala intermédia, para projetar num lugar intersticial específico do Vale do Ave. Neste lugar está presente uma certa hibridez programática e tipológica que cruza o urbano e o rural e que justapõe a dinâmica dos fluxos à expectativa do vazio. The exercise is to draw a dwelling complex, interpreting it as the spacial relation between urban matrix and domestic space. The project addresses two main points: - the urban form giving answers to the particular constraints of a heterogeneous context; and, - the domestic space generically drafted to attend to the diverse ways of living. Based on Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille, there is a re-interpretation of its area and its program into small units of medium scale, to project in a specific interstitial place in Vale do Ave. There is a certain programmatic and typological hybridity in this place, crossing rural and urban and juxtaposing the fluxes dynamic with the expectation of empty space.

IMPLANTAÇÃO | MASTERPLAN O sítio, próximo de uma das estradas automóvel da cidade - junto à Veiga de Creixomil - é circunscrito pela antiga estrada nacional de acesso ao centro de Guimarães e pela nova via que estende a circulação rápida da autoestrada até ao nó de Silvares. Entalado no fundo de uma colina entre os percursos viários, uma ribeira atravessa o terreno de projeto. Os programas a integrar no complexo vão desde a habitação (mairoritariamente), até um ginásio, hotel, creche e espaços de comércio. A implantação assenta na libertação do solo para uso público. Quer-se que ele seja entendido como uma sucessão de praças de diferentes formatos e dimensões, ora cobertas, ora descobertas, definidas como plataformas de respiro associadas aos volumes construídos. The site, located close to one of the town’s motorway - near Veiga de Creixomil - is trapped between the old main road leading to the center of Guimarães and the new expressway extending the motorway’s fast circulation to Silvares’s node. Stuck at the bottom of a hill between the highway and a county road, a water stream crosses the project site. Usages to integrate in the complex range from housing, gym, hotel, kindergarden and comercial spaces (housing being the main focus). In the masterplan the intent is to free the ground level for public use, for it to be understood as a sequence of squares with different configurations, where the apparent consructed mass of volumes allows the soil to breathe.

A unidade levantada do solo permite a fluidez do espaço coletivo ao nível do solo. Os acessos em cada bloco seguem a horizontalidade do volume, lembrando varandas sobre a envolvente, com duas frentes. As paredes que sustentam a unidade funcionam não só como suporte do volume mas também como rede de infraestruturas, sendo encarregues pelas condutas de abastecimentos de cada fração componente da unidade (cada apartamento). The raised unit allows the common space areas to flow at ground level. The access to each apartment block follows the horizontality of the volume, mimicking terraces in the surrounding area, with two fronts. The walls which bear the unit work not only as structure to the volume but also as infrastructure system, are responsible for conducting the supply grid to each fraction of the unit (each apartment/hotel room).

A rua da cidade/o palco do teatro, a sua fusão num espaço cénico que vive da luz e de um a’ percurso.

Numa reabilitação com intenção urbana, a proposta passou por tratar a área do rés do chão como espaço público e assim aproximar arte e população. O percurso definido neste nível funciona como razão para aceder ao teatro e às performances, como razão para ficar. The city street/the theatre stage, their fusion within a scenic space alive by light and a pathway.

In a building refurbishment with urban intent, the proposal was to treat the ground floor area as public space thus bringing art and the population closer. The existing pathway creates the reason to enter the theatre and the performances, the reason to stay.

O rés do chão é visto como um prolongamento da rua, uma praceta no interior do perímetro do edifício. Na cobertura, o rasgo longitudinal ao longo de todo o edifício permite trazer a luz natural até à zona do palco, iluminando-o durante o dia, para as atividades pedagógicas. The ground floor is seen as an extension of the street, a small square inside the building’s perimeter. On the other hand, the technical room and all artist related areas are located on the first and second floors, leaving the ground floor free for a stage area. The gap in the roof allows natural light to enter the space and reach the stage area on the ground floor, illuminating pedagogical activities, during the day.

O exercício foi criar um complexo de escritórios num terreno abandonado, junto à linha férrea em Rovigo, Itália. O complexo deveria albergar, além dos escritórios, programas complementares como cantinas, estacionamento, áreas recreativas, armazéns... Com inspiração na ideia da velocidade, trazida pela presença do caminho ferroviário, implantou-se o complexo de edifícios como um percurso linear ao qual estão adossados os diversos programas. Funcionando como uma promenade que reforça o desnível, o percurso vai percorrendo os edifícios que contêm diferentes programas, terminando, por último, no edifício de remate sobre a zona verde de proximidade com a ribeira. The exercise was to design a complex of office buildings in an abandoned site, close to the railway line in Rovigo, Italy. The complex should include, beside the office space, other complementary functions such as cantines, parking space, recrational areas, storage space... Getting inspiration from the idea of velocity, brought by the presence of the railway, the complex of buildings was planned as a linear pathway to which several programs are connected. Working as a promenade that reinforces the slope, the pathway goes along the buildings that have diverse functions, finishing then, in a last building over a green area close to the water stream. O objetivo era pensar o tecido urbano da cidade de Faenza mediante uma palavra sorteada, neste caso a palavra VERDE. Como pensar a cidade segundo o verde? O que é exatamente o verde na cidade, e o que pode ele acrescentar à sua identidade? A resposta surgiu do estudo de diversas cidades históricas como Faenza (Roma, Bologna, Firenze...). A matriz do tecido urbano variava de cidade para cidade, mas era sempre possível traçar um esquema do seu espaço vazio, sempre presente mas particular em cada uma delas. The goal was to think about the city matrix of Faenza starting from a single random word: GREEN. How do you think about the city according to the word green? What exactly is green in a city, and what may green add to its identity? The answer appeared from the analysis of several cities like Faenza (Roma, Bologna, Firenze...). The urban matrix was different in each city but the grren spaces were always present and you could always identify a particular vacant space draft to each of them. Qual o espaço da luz na arquitetura? Como desenhar o espaço a partir da luz, dar-lhe densidade e definir o programa espacial tendo-a por base? Foi a essas questões que respondemos neste exercício. A proposta passou pela criação de um espaço de exposições onde através da variação da luz conseguíssemos traçar a espacialidade. What is the space of the light in architecture? How can you design space from light, give it density and define a spacial program taking light as a starting point? These were the questions we answered in this exercise. O conceito evoluiu num pavilhão de exposições para integrar a Bienal de Architectura de Veneza: o pavilhão seria construído como um barco relembrando os teatros flutuantes da Veneza setecentista referenciados no Teatro del Mondo (Aldo Rossi, 1979). A iluminação utilizando a LUZ NATURAL seria privilegiada e ajudaria a definir o espaço de exposições, recorrendo à antiga técnica do uso de espelhos para propagar a luz natural no interior sempre que necessário. The concept evolved into an exhibition pavilion as part of the Architecture Biennale: the pavilion would materialize as a boat, recalling the floating theatres of seventeenth century Venice - main reference being 1979 Aldo Rossi’s Teatro del Mondo. The use of NATURAL LIGHT would be preferred and would help to define the exhibition space, resorting to the ancient mirror technique to disseminate natural light through interior spaces, whenever such use would be considered necessary.

Como nas embarcações tradicionais o material de eleição é a madeira. A estrutura segue a ideia de suporte presente na estacaria de madeira veneziana. Essa estrutura forma uma parede permeável entre interior/exterior ajudando, ao mesmo tempo, a dividir e organizar o espaço interior. No exterior, uma pele também em madeira reveste o espaço, mantendo a coerência tectónica.

As in traditional boats, the material of choice is wood. The structure follows the idea of the Venetian staking wood support system and forms a permeable wall between inside/outside. At the same time, it helps to divide and organize the interior space. Outside, a shell of wood coats the whole space, maintaining tectonic coherence.

O pavilhão torna-se então uma referência na paisagem veneziana, tanto de dia como de noite, quando a sua presença é, literalmente, um ponto de LUZ. A exposição extrapola para além do espaço confinado do pavilhão: durante o percurso, a cidade de Veneza e a sua relação diária com a água torna-se parte da experiência do visitante, como a restante obra exposta. The pavilion then becomes a reference point in Venetian landscape, both by day and by night, when its presence is, literally, a point of LIGHT. The exhibition surpasses the confined area of the pavilion. While visiting the exhibition, visitors can experience the city of Venice and its water-related daily life, just like all of the other work in display.

Entendendo a Avenida da Boavista como uma sucessão de segmentos, construímos um olhar pelas suas visuais, os seus percursos e sistemas de espaços coletivos. Partindo dessa análise, o que propomos é uma estratégia (faseada) de reaproveitamento do miolo dos quarteirões, criando espaços de uso coletivo com sentido de vizinhança, de modo a definir pontos de unidade ao longo da avenida. Reading Boavista Ave. as a succession of segments, we build a specific way to look at its visuals, its routes and its collective space systems. Based on that analysis, we propose a phased strategy to re-use the core of blocks located in Boavista, creating collective use spaces with a sense of neighborly relations, in order to define the point of unity throughout the Avenue.

block interior logradouro backyard Nascido dessa ideia de espaço visual identificado no interior dos quarteirões do início da Avenida - visual coletiva - o projeto trabalha as relações de vizinhança, procurando funcionar como um conjunto de 3 ativadores urbanos. O projeto assenta na hipótese de diálogo entre câmara e população: um quarteirão com visual coletiva, conjugado com elementos preexistentes muro, água, árvore - que, por agregação servem como catalisador do projeto. Desenvolve-se primeiro um Projeto-piloto, implementando uma biblioteca local num edifício degradado do quarteirão, revitalizando um centro comercial e criando uma zona de estar/lazer. Só nesta etapa há um ganho de 2132m2 de espaço coletivo no quarteirão. Born from that idea of visual space identified in the interior of the neighbourhoods/blocks at the beginning of the avenue - collective visual - the project works the neighbourly relations, looking to operate as a set of urban activators. The project is based on the hypotheses of dialgue between city council and population: a block with a collective visual, along with pre-existing elements - wall, water, tree - which, by agregation behaves as a catalyst of the poject. The 1st phase is a pilot-project, with the implementation of a local library in a deteriorated building of the block, revitalizing a shopping center and creating a recreation area. Only in this stage there is the gain of 2132m2 of collective space in the block.

Em todo o projeto a permeabilidade - tanto de chão como visual - é uma premissa fundamental e origina uma variedade na textura e materialidade da proposta. O Projeto-piloto passa pela definição de um passadiço que interliga cotas e, pela criação de diversas ambiências que tornem o interior do quarteirão num espaço de uso coletivo de referência. Nas fases seguintes ao Projeto-piloto propomos a identificação de outros articuladores urbanos que tragam uma mais-valia aos transeuntes e habitantes da Avenida, no fundo alargando o modo de operação a toda a extensão da avenida. Esta influência de espaços com relações de vizinhança sobre a envolvente impulsiona o uso do miolo dos quarteirões e levará a uma maior interação entre os fluxos (aqui presentes e os da avenida). Through the whole project we have permeability - both of ground and visual - as a fundamental premise and originates in a variety of textures and materials used in our proposal. In the Pilot-project we define a footpath to interconnect the different ground heights and, with the creation of several atmospheres to transform the interior of the block into a reference collective use space. In the phases following the Pilot-project, its modus operandi can be applied in other strategic spots of the Avenue. This influence of spaces with neighbourly relations upon the surrounding areas boosts the use of the blocks’ core and it might lead to a better interaction between the fluxes.

ES: Proposal for two spaces resulting from the insertion of motorway A7 in the territory O trabalho de investigação é uma reflexão com carácter prático, que aborda os temas da inserção das infraestruturas viárias no território de urbanização difusa. Partindo de uma inquietação associada à presença da autoestrada na escala local do território (para lá da cidade consolidada), procurou criar-se um olhar específico sobre os espaços resultantes dessa inserção. O objetivo da investigação foi construir um raciocínio em torno desses espaços, demonstrando o seu potencial e relevância ao nível local e, assim, contribuir para a procura de uma melhor articulação entre as grandes infraestruturas viárias e os contextos que elas atravessam. Para isso, a investigação teve como caso de estudo um troço da autoestrada A7, entre Fafe e Guimarães. Apresentando algumas soluções práticas de intervenção que visam (re)ativar os referidos espaços, o que se propôs foi mais do que isso, foi um modo de ver e de proceder: as propostas baseiam-se na potenciação dos usos que esses espaços já recebem (temas específicos daquele local) – de modo a restabelecer as relações entre os diversos sistemas territoriais aí assentes. Desta forma, em todo o trabalho a pesquisa, o registo e análise da situação in situ tomou grande importância.

The reasearch work is a practical reflection addressing the insertion of road infrastructures in the diffused urbanization territory. Starting from an initial concern related to the presence of the motorway on the local scope of the territory (beyond the consolidated city), the research intended to create a specific view of the spaces resulting from that insertion. The goal was to create a line of thought regarding these spaces, showing their unexplored potential and relevance at a local level and thus, contributing to a better articulation between major road infrastructures and the local contexts they cross. For this, the exercise based itself on a portion of the motorway A7, connecting Fafe and Guimarães. Featuring some practical solutions that seek to (re)activate the referred spaces, the proposal went further than that, it gave a specific way of viewing and proceeding. The presented projects are based on the potential usage that those spaces have already been given (specific themes from each site), in order to reestablish the relationships between the various territorial systems settled in that location. Regarding this, throughout all of the research, the situation recording and analysis in situ takes great importance.
