project experience CARDWELL FORESHORE RECONSTRUCTION Cardwell, Queensland, Australia LA3 has been engaged as Landscape Architects for the landmark project to redesign the 3.5km foreshore and the townscape at Cardwell in North Queensland. The project is the outcome of an extensive public consultation and vision process held in Cardwell in 2011, post TC Yasi. Having carefully facilitated this process, our Principal Landscape Architect, Joseph Corbin developed concept options with the community then developed those community driven solutions into an agreed overall masterplan and community vision for this unique northern Australian coastal township. The township and foreshore was devastated by the category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi in February 2011. Many people lost not only their belongings but their livelihoods and many had no option but to leave Cardwell. The town is located on the Bruce Hwy adjacent the World Heritage listed Hinchinrook Island and channel. It is the only stop on the coast when travelling from Cairns to Townsville. Many hope that the new works will revitalise this seaside town and help regain the former character whilst bringing a new heart and soul to the town. The community’s ongoing involvement will ensure that the outcome is unique and will hold considerable local ownership.

project experience CAIRNS CENTRAL PARK Cairns, Queensland, Australia Our landscape concept for The Regatta at Cairns Central Park reflects existing elements of the site and aspects of ‘Life’ in Cairns. This includes the local tropical environs and in particular ‘life on the water and in the waves’. In our design, the reflective pond at the icon building will be fed from a large sail sculpture through the plaza leading you toward this architectural feature building. The sound of running water will calm the visitor as it echoes in the cavernous built environment. Beside the icon building will be a cascading green wall backdrop with hanging plant species reflecting a local waterfall setting. Sails on the Spence street will mark the development in the streetscape reflecting the heritage of sea travel, the first fleet and our reliance on the trade on water in our early days. Interpretive nodes will tell the story to visitors through sculpture and urban design. Along the boulevard will be a line of large shady tropical shade trees creating respite for visitors and outdoor cafes. The backdrop of the podium hanging gardens will give the atmosphere of being in a forested oasis and the serpentine layout of the road will reflect a river and flowing water. Ever present will be the large buildings in sail form above the visitor.

urban design RICHLANDS STATION PLAZA & DSTC Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Joseph was the Design Director for the Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor (DSTC) including the new Richlands Station arrival plaza. In line with his design philosophy, the landscape and urban design of the corridor ensured that the visual character of the surrounding landscape was maintained and enhanced by new infrastructure with contemporary form and function. Through detailed analysis of cultural, social, historical, physical and natural context, the design team led by Joseph, identified several character areas resulting into organic forms and layout which serves as the basis of the station precinct design.

project experience DUNK ISLAND SPIT Cairns, Queensland, Australia Dunk Island and the famous ‘Spit’ recreational area were devastated by TC Yasi in February 2011. Prior to this event ‘The Dunk Island Spit’ was famous among locals and international visitors for it’s natural values and easy access to open water and a variety of water sports activities. Visitors used the spit to recreate on a day visitor basis travelling from the mainland or on overnight stays even for several nights camping on the spit. LA3 was engaged to create a new Landscape Masterplan for the spit in consultation with the stakeholders including QPWS, CCRC and the new Resort Owner. Not only was the brief to reinstate the activities previously at the spit but to reorganise the spit to better cater for future usage and better coordination with the Resort, Cafe Operator and it many valuable visitors. The spit is the gateway to the resort and the cafe the arrival and orientation point. LA3 has developed a furnishings and signage suite for the spit to enhance it’s character.

masterplanning CLONCURRY EQUESTRIAN CENTRE Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia LA3 was engaged as Design Manager and Master Planner for the New Cloncurry Equestrian Centre which will be located adjacent the racecourse. We developed a plan incorporating facilities for the famous annual ‘Stockmans Challenge’ and Rodeo events. The new facility is designed to accommodate all types of equestrian events. The greenfield development adjacent the existing racecourse includes a large covered arena, uncovered camp draft arena, associated complimentary cattle yard configurations, a new caretakers building, camping area, access roads, amenities buildings, fencing, entry gates, and landscape treatments. project experience CAPELLA STREET Clermont, Queensland, Australia Capella Street is an important spine for the central business activity of Clermont and provides an important link to Hoods Lagoon in the north which is the town’s main recreational core. Before the masterplan, the condition of Capella Street was designed predominantly for vehicular access and thoroughfare just like many Queensland country town streetscapes. The new design by LA3 significantly increases pedestrian comfort and addresses safety issues by decreasing crossing distances and providing a more pleasant streetscape environment. Our proposed design transforms Capella Street into a public pedestrian space whilst maintaining traffic flows that emphasise connectivity between the surrounding shops, links to community facilities and the creation of social areas. The design process involved preparation of a site analysis report, conceptual design, liaison with community groups and then the development of design options based on feedback from such community consultations. The end result was unanimously accepted.

urban design SHIELDS STREET Cairns, Queensland, Australia Joseph Corbin & Phil Druery developed the Shields Streets scheme, detailed the design and supervised the construction of this important CBD spine for Cairns in Far North Queensland. The concept was to reinvigorate the centre of the commercial grid providing a boulevard for cafes, strolling, shopping and socialising in a tropical cosmopolitan atmosphere. The City of Cairns is still enjoying the rewards of this project after some years and the soft landscape has matured to enhance it further. The use of durable furnishings and pavements overlaid with public and community art has been the secret of the projects longevity

project experience AL RAYYAN PARKS Doha, Qatar These four parks are important open spaces for the community of Al Rayyan Municipality in Doha, Qatar. LA3’s challenge was to create world-class designs that accommodate the sporting and recreational needs of the nearby residences. Our solutions offer various spaces for passive and active recreation, using different features to educate the users and to convey stories about the beauty of the arid landscape. LA3 produced various designs for the four parks using different patterns, shapes and elements found in the arid environment. The parks will serve as places of interaction and play or “urban oasis” for the nearby residents.

project experience AL SEEF, AL RAHA BEACH Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. Whilst at GHD, Joseph was the Design Director for the Al Seef project in Abu Dhabi UAE. His team designed the landscape for the 36 ha. site including canal side, residential and commercial public spaces, water features, swimming pools and private courtyards. Al Seef was to be a world-class 21st century mixed-use water side urban development within the Al Raha Beach development. Its habitable outdoor environment promotes a unique, year round external mixed use destination, with the highest architectural and urban design quality integrated with the wider Al Raha Beach development. The design features a continuous canal-side promenade, with the public realm extending to the adjacent precincts encouraging pedestrian flow throughout the development.

master planning KHALIFA SPORTS CITY Doha, Qatar Joseph developed the Landscape Masterplan with Site Image while at GHD in Doha for the Khalifa Sports City. The project was triggered by the redevelopment of the Khalifa Stadium in 2001 for the upcoming 2006 Asian Games to be held in Qatar. The development of the adjacent indoor stadium, aquatic centre and various other buildings created the need for an integrated overall plan developing cohesion, public amenity and a landscapes that reflected the character of the site and local culture. Working for the lead consultant, Joseph’s role was to develop the scope, project manage and design direct the project to KSCDC. Many options were developed including a full botanical experience for visitors to the Asian Games 2006 which was presented to the Crown Prince of Qatar. The final outcomes were practical and reflective of the countries capability at the time. A shortage of water determined many of the outcomes. With many facilities, thesite is now usable year round not just during events. In the late afternoon and evening visitors and Qataris can now enjoy the active recreation facilities, walking, jogging and appreciation of Sports City withinan integrated developed landscape.

The new park provided a layout in the islamic style with amenities for the modern user. A central focus in the symmetrical water features which allows the user to interact with flowing water by sitting on the edge or within via raised stepping stones. At night the main fountains are illuminated. The park provides an open green space, shaded avenues and a shaded childern’s playground. The plantings are colorful for interest and variety while Date Palms shade the central areas they provide a strong framework for the park.
