Healthcare
Today’s healthcare environment is changing. What isn’t changing is the need for spaces that are safe, patientcentered, and operationally efficient.
When you need holistic solutions, our full-service team is at the ready. We break down silos — on our team or yours — to advance the practice of care.
In healthcare, interdisciplinary care teams offer unique benefits to complex cases. The same is true for your facilities projects. Our project teams are comprised of diverse healthcare design specialists working in collaboration to solve your biggest challenges.
Through scenario planning, LEAN design, and process improvements, we can deliver more than just beautiful spaces. Our design process can identify opportunities for re-imagined patient care experiences, develop ways to utilize new technology to protect and assist caregivers, and affirm your commitment to environmental responsibility.
Just because acute care spaces are specialized doesn’t mean they can’t be highly flexible - we plan for surges, night operations, and future advancements in care.
Acute Care
Infection Control. HIPAA. Security. 24/7. All delivered within a hospitality focused patient experience. It’s possible when you work with a team that understands hospitals, and the diverse populations within them.
We’ve designed emergency rooms, ICUs, and bed towers, along with the cafeterias, chapels, and staff spaces that support them. Maintenance considerations have big impact at this scale - as does energy efficiency. Every member of our design team “gets it”, so let’s build on what’s working and reinvent what isn’t.
Outpatient care
From the latest in ambulatory surgery to community clinics and private practice, outpatient facilities are diverse and specialized. Our portfolio includes orthopedics and associated PT spaces, cancer care, pediatrics, and community health/convenient care centers.
Our team works with you to incorporate design and finish standards, ensuring that the patient experience is consistent with your overall healthcare system brand.
What’s driving the growth of outpatient facilities? Cost, convenience, consolidation, community-focus, and consumer choice.
You’ve spent time growing your practice - leave the rest of the heavy lifting to us. Our studio has the skills to design for everything from optometry to orthodontics, pediatrics to primary care, and everything in between.
We all want to be treated in spaces that make us feel comfortable. For most practices, comfort is delivered through natural light, visual and acoustical privacy, and effective ventilation, heating, and cooling.
Cancer care
Cancer treatment has evolved in every way. Environments today reduce the presence of equipment and increase holistic patient support. Advances mean many patients are experiencing a continuum of care for decades following diagnosis.
Quality healthcare design has always sought to reduce patient anxiety. The COVID-19 pandemic provided additional challenges for patients, staff, and support persons that we can now pro-actively alleviate.
Sports Medicine Integrated Wellness
We can draw on our extensive sports portfolio to create facilities that bridge healthcare and healthy living.
New facilities are combining sports facilities with orthopedics, rehab, and even nutrition and psychology.
LaBella’s work for professional and collegiate sports facilities can be coupled with our healthcare experience to create spaces that focus on avoiding injury.
Health and wellness meet in community outpatient facilities that combine clinic and diagnostic services with exercise and community facilities.
ot/pt Rehabilitation
For patients, the therapy room is a place to experience pain, frustration, hope, and reward.
For therapists, the right lighting, acoustics, and storage considerations make a difference in their own stamina as well.
Finishes here matter. We consider falls and safety, the ability to design progress cues into the floors and walls, and the impact of equipment that is regularly moved.
Demand for therapy space continues to grow with the Baby Boomer generation.
Pediatrics
With an increased understanding of many mental and behavior health conditions that require spaces with adjustable levels of stimulation, today’s pediatric environments have hidden wonders.
We work with your team to build opportunities to customize and scale. Technology can adjust color, artwork, music and other environmental features, giving control back to the child-patient.
Regardless of setting, access to nature and environments for physical activity are necessary physiologically and psychologically. We can find ways to bring it all together.
Pediatric medicine includes patients up to age 18. Toddler-specific themes and over-the-top stimulation have been replaced with positive distractions and customizable tech.
Reducing stress for the childpatient and their families is imperative in a healthcare setting. Caregiver comforts like technology access and areas of respite are essential.
Interior Design & WaYFinding
Our healthcare interior designers have specialized experience that ranges from large-scale, facility master planning to targeted finish upgrades. Carefully considering the maintenance implications of each material, our approach includes facility staff interviews, materials testing, and research-driven decision making.
Building performance
LaBella’s engineering team specializes in the design of energy efficient, high performance healthcare facilities.
We provide full-service engineering and energy design services. Our team understands the many challenges healthcare facilities face with respect to energy savings, operations, and continued maintenance of their facilities.
Our grant writers are well versed in funding opportunities and rebate programs. LaBella has performed numerous building condition studies and commissioning projects as well as assisted in the execution of energy performance contracts for many of our clients.
We have experience in utilities distribution, central plants, fire suppression systems, HVAC and air ventilation systems.
Infrastructure
Investments in infrastructure are crucial to maintaining your facility’s essential services. With a full-service team of environmental, civil, transportation, and utility engineers, we’ve tackled it all - from bike paths to bridges. Master planning, term contracts, expansions, and rehabilitations are all in our wheelhouse.
Improvement projects often utilize our in-house asbestos laboratory and abatement designers, as well as our planning team’s grant writers and environmental review specialists.
Visualization & Donor relations
Fundraising is a necessary part of most expansion projects. Our team has the tools needed to communicate your vision to patients, staff, and donors. Recognition walls, naming opportunities, and phased designs allow for multi-year campaigns that recognize the community behind your care.
Support Spaces
In addition to optimizing the patient experience, your healthcare campus can be a powerful recruitment and retention tool for staff. LaBella can draw on our diverse portfolio to provide industryleading retail, wellness, and office environments.
LaBella offers a depth of expertise in our nonhealthcare studios, allowing us to work with retail or religious designers to accomplish your gift shop and chapel projects. The result? Cafes that operate with as much forethought as your operating room does. Office spaces that are flexible and ergonomic. Parking garages that are safe and efficient.
Pictured far right: LaBella recently worked with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY to develop a therapeutic garden. The 3,000 sf terrace gives patients and staff access to fresh air and sunshine by utilizing an existing rooftop. Materials were carefully selected to meet allowable rooftop loads and withstand harsh Buffalo winters. Many sustainable and custom details were incorporated into the design, including a word wall speaking to the mission and purpose of the facility. Healthcare Design 2018 Gold Award Recipient.
