BRENDAN RYAN TD Keeping in Touch with the Naul Autumn 2013

NAUL BROADBAND UPDATE With basic broadband services widely available across Ireland, following the National Broadband Scheme (NBS) and the more recent Rural Broadband Scheme (RBS), the government is now committed to providing high speed broadband to everyone in the country. In order to do this the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources is currently mapping the broadband network across the entire country with a view to identifying areas that the private operators, such as Eircom, are not currently serving and will not be serving in coming years. This mapping process will be completed next year and the Department will then put out to tender contracts for providing broadband coverage in areas not covered by the private operators. This tendering process will commence in 2014. Decisions by private operators are taken purely on commercial grounds, which means that towns such as the Naul are frequently left out. It is very frustrating that a vital infrastructure such as this does not extend to towns only 20 miles from the capital, but this is a situation that I want to see addressed and I will be lobbying Minster Pat Rabbitte for the National Broadband Scheme to be extended to the Naul as expeditiously as possible.

DELVIN BANKS FOOTPATH Further to my representations, I was informed this summer that the Council still has not identified a funding source for the proposed footpath from Devlin Banks to the Seamus Ennis Centre. The proposed footpath, costing €25,000 will therefore not be delivered in this year. However, there remains a vital need for a footpath at this location to address serious road safety concerns and as such I am committed to putting pressure on the Council and relevant Government Departments until it is delivered. GARDA RECRUITMENT EMBARGO TO BE LIFTED Earlier this summer, I welcomed the news from the Department of Justice that a new recruitment competition is due to open for An Garda Síochána. This is a very welcome development and is further evidence that despite the current exchequer situation, this Government is fully committed to ensuring that An Garda Síochána continue to be given the resources necessary to enable them to deliver a first class policing service. There is already a considerable level of interest with approximately 27,000 individuals having already registered an interest and it is expected that these numbers will increase before the competition is advertised. There are a number of procedural matters that need to be finalised prior to the formal commencement of the process which is expected to get under way in September with the first students entering the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary in mid-2014. I would advise any Naul resident interested in applying for An Garda Síochána to keep an eye on the Public Appointment Service website; www.publicjobs.ie and also www.garda.ie.

FURTHER 150K TO FINGAL FOR HOUSING ADAPTATION I am pleased that an extra €151,051 has been allocated by Government to Fingal County Council for the purposes of Housing Adaptation Grants. Minister for Housing, Labour’s Jan O'Sullivan has made good on her commitment to me to keep her capital funding budget under review and to allocate unspent resources to this most important of areas. The types of works grant aided under the scheme will benefit older people and those with disabilities.
