Cherryfield, Perrystown, Wainsfort & Fortfield CREATING JOBS TODAY BUILDING A BETTER TOMMORROW A return to modest growth (not enough); a steady increase in the number of people at work (3000 per month – a long way to go) the creation of the Strategic Investment Fund (6.4 billion) for job creation; and the exit from the Troika bailout in November last (restoring our economic independence) are all hopeful signs. The rollout of Free GP for the entire population has begun with children of five years and under to benefit from the measure in 2014. Labour’s priority is to assist hard pressed families in making ends meet. Additional funds are being provided for school book rental schemes so that they are available in every primary school in Ireland (such book rental schemes can save parents of small children up to 80% of the cost of school books). Small steps for sure, but very real evidence that we can make the economic recovery benefit those who need it most. This has been the worst recession in living memory. Whereas the struggle to maintain social services is painfully demanding, the greater challenge is to put people back to work. In the past year there were 58,000 more people at work and the workforce is now growing at 3000 people per month. Despite this unemployment remains unacceptably high. The recent CSO figures showed how difficult it is for a small trading economy to grow when every other EU country is in recession. However for the first time in a long time there is real hope.

Cherryfield, Perrystown, Wainsfort and Fortfield are to be included in the new “Templeogue Terenure” area in the County Council. This large area also includes Greenhills, Templeogue, Knocklyon and goes as far as Firhouse in the foothills of the mountains. My County Council colleagues in Templeogue Terenure are Pamela Kearns and Chris Bond. Pamela is from Corrib Road in Terenure and lives with her husband and two sons in Templeogue. Chris is a first time councillor based in Firhouse. I will be working closely with Pamela and Chris in 2014 and if you have any council queries feel free to contact us.

EXTRA FUNDING FOR HOME HEATING GRANTS €30 million in stimulus funding secured in Budget 2014 will now continue investment in the Better Energy and Warmer Home energy efficiency schemes to a total of €57 million. The Warmer Homes Scheme provides energy efficiency measures free of charge to lowincome households. Over 15,000 homes are expected to benefit from upgrade under this programme in 2014. The estimate for 2014 under the Better Energy Homes is that a further 17,000 homes will be retrofitted next year. Earlier this year, a €70 million Energy Efficiency Fund was established to encourage similar works in public and commercial buildings, which will also boost employment, a key deliverable of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. €6 BILLION JOBS FUND Creating jobs today, by building the infrastructure we need for tomorrow €6.4 billion has been allocated to the newly established Ireland Strategic Investment Fund for job creation and maximising commercial investment. This job creation investment plan will provide the basis for sustainable, export-led jobs. Investment sanctioned under the plan must create economic activity and jobs and generate a commercial return. It is part of Labour’s main focus in government of getting the Irish economy back on track and getting people back to work. First time that Ireland will have a strategic fund purely for investment and growing jobs here at home. Delivers on a key Labour commitment to establish a fund focused on jobs and job creation through the work of Labour Ministers, TDs and Senators. €6.4 billion fund allows for commercial investment in next generation infrastructure with the most job-creation potential including energy, broadband, school building, forestry and water infrastructure projects.

PUTTING JOBS FIRST ■ 250,000 jobs were lost between 2008-2011 under Fianna Fail. ■ When Labour came to office, the live register was heading for 500,000. It will fall below 400,000 very soon. ■ Now we are creating 3,000 jobs per month.

YOUR LOCAL LABOUR TEAM

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS SCHEME Long term unemployed people starting their own business will be exempt from income tax for two years under the new Start Your Own Business Scheme (SYOB). The income tax exemption of up to €40,000 will be provided for people who have been unemployed for at least 15 months before starting their business. This may be of particular interest to unemployed construction workers who are looking to go out on their own or start up a business in a new sector.

HOME RENOVATION INCENTIVE Homeowners will be able to claim tax back of 13.5% on renovations and extensions carried out in their home through a new Home Renovation Incentive. Tax relief will be available for the next two years and will cover home renovations costing between €5,000 and €30,000 that is carried out by registered tradespeople. As well as helping homeowners this measure will give a much need boost to construction workers.
