Budget 2016 is about improving living standards, investing in essential services and making life better for the people of Ireland. Families will have a little bit more at the end of every month with increases in Child Benefit, an additional pre-school year and the roll out of free GP care to children aged 11 and under. Further investment in social housing, a new affordable housing scheme and additional funding for homeless accommodation will help to address housing needs and increases in pension payments, Fuel Allowance and the Christmas Bonus will provide vital support to older and more vulnerable groups. This budget also delivers for low and middle income earners through fairer taxes and reductions in USC. Additional supports for small businesses and the introduction of a new tax credit to help self-employed people will ensure that the economy continues to grow and new jobs are created.

The sacrifices made by the Irish people in recent years, and the steps taken by this Government to preserve and restore our public finances, have allowed us to introduce a budget that makes the recovery real for more people, strengthens our economy and promotes a fair and decent society. In this newsletter, I summarise some of the main provisions of this year’s budget.
