SENATOR LORRAINE HIGGINS

CREATING JOBS, SECURING OUR RECOVERY The Labour Party Spring 2015 As your national public representative Senator for Athenry, I know first-hand how local communities and businesses have struggled in the wake of Ireland’s economic collapse. As the country returns to prosperity, I have also heard the deep concerns of those who fear our recovery is two tier, with Dublin leading while rural communities lag behind. I am committed to tackling this issue and securing the prosperity of our communities through the key economic driver of employment.

APPLE LANDMARK INVESTMENT WILL CREATE 300 JOBS I recently had Minister for Business Ged Nash visit the town to see how he can assist me in bringing the benefits of the recovery to my hometown. Minister Nash met with local business people and viewed the IDA sites earmarked for development where he stressed the importance of multinational investment in the town. Minister Nash’s support has Senator Higgins with Minister Nash at an IDA site earmarked for development in Athenry recently. been followed by the Photo: Brian Harding incredible news of Apple’s €850 million investment in Athenry, through the development of a state-ofthe-art data storage centre at Derrydonnell. Over the course of this project 300 jobs will be created, with hundreds of construction jobs and major direct and indirect benefits for the local business community and families alike. This is a project of global significance both in its environmentally friendly design which sees the plant run entirely on renewable energy and in the size of the investment, Apple’s largest in Europe to date. The IDA, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton, Minister Nash and all those at Apple must be commended for their faith and vision in our community.

DEVELOPING OUR INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EMPLOYMENT AND PROSPERITY As Apple’s investment shows, fit-for-the-purpose, high quality infrastructure is vital for development. To this end, since I was nominated to the Seanad I work closely with the Department of the Environment to champion the investment in a new Sewerage Scheme for the town to enable increased capacity so we could encourage more factories to set up here. My efforts resulted in an €11 million investment to upgrade the plant. This is key piece of infrastructure to allow for the development of the town and will also encourage further multinational investment into Athenry. 2015 is shaping up to be the year we finally turn the corner towards prosperity. I am committed to doing all I can to accelerate this process. I am also proud and excited by Apple’s arrival and I look forward to working with all concerned parties to bring this groundbreaking project to fruition.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES ON THE GORT - TUAM BYPASS A major recruitment drive is underway to source workers needed for the building of the Gort - Tuam bypass. Preliminary works have already begun on this major project which will bring huge direct benefits to the region and also spin-off effects. It is estimated that it will create between 700 and 800 jobs directly, but will generate hundreds of millions of euro for the local economy. I strongly urge construction workers seeking employment to put themselves forward for this project. Anyone who would like more information or support in how to go about applying for these roles should avail of my CV clinic, details of which are listed below.
