LOCAL NEWS Working with Cllr. Dermot Lacey

NEW TEAROOMS FOR HERBERT PARK Designs have been commissioned by Dublin City Council for the refurbishment of the Bowling & Tennis Pavilion at Herbert Park following the championing of the establishment of the Herbert Park Users Forum by Cllr. Dermot Lacey. My colleague Cllr. Dermot Lacey has campaigned for an upgrade of these facilities for many years and the programme of work underway results from that. Labour in Dublin is delivering community facilities in our parks and will continue to work to improve the amenities available to citizens. Current Layout of the courts in Herbert Park The proposals include the refurbishment of the entire building currently located beside the tennis and bowling greens. It includes an upgrade of the Herbert Park Bowling Club and provision of tearoom, public toilets and external seating.

Importantly, the design will ensure an appropriate ‘Pavillion’ type impact in keeping with the history of the Park. The north gable will be opened up for the Tearooms and will provide a visual link to the tennis courts, croquet lawn and path to the playground The structure will also accommodate universally accessible public sanitary facilities and the bowling club accommodation will be completely refurbished and extended.

The building is in poor condition, needs a lot of work and doesn’t comply with building regulations. A new pedestrian link to the playground is included as is the extension to the Tennis courts to allow doubles games be played on all courts. There will be two outdoor seating areas, one just outside the tearooms, and another just beyond the trees beside the pavilion. There will be CCTV and external lighting which will contribute to a safer environment in the park. Kevin & Cllr Dermot Lacey on the site of the proposed works

It is hoped that construction will start in early 2014, taking six months if planning permission is granted. The Part 8 planning application will take place this month.

RESTORING HERBERT PARK – WORK TO START ON NEW CHANGING ROOMS Other work on upgrading Herbert Park continues. The football pitches have been reseeded and following the recent dry spell the turf is establishing well . Work on upgrading the changing room pavilion beside the football pitches is due to start in November. Cllr Dermot Lacey has worked to put in place a conservation plan for the Park. It is hoped that plans can be advanced to rebuild the collapsed wisteria covered Pergola that stood on the site of the 1907 Palace of Fine Arts, and restore the timber pavilion shelter that once stood in the northwest corner of the Park.

€200 MILLION SECURED FOR CHILDRENS HOSPITAL

EDUCATE TOGETHER NEW PATRON FOR DUBLIN 4 SCHOOL

With the sale of the license for the National Lottery to a consortium led by An Post, the current operators, €200 million has been ring-fenced for the construction of the badly needed, new National Children’s Hospital on the grounds of St James.

Due to growing population, there is a need for a new 16 class school in the Dublin 4 area covering Ringsend through Sandymount to Ballsbridge & Donnybrook. Educate Together has been selected as the patron of the new school, as the parent Dublin 4 Educate Together start-up start up group clearly group meeting with Minister Ruairi demonstrated a parental choice Quinn for a multidenominational school.

Despite the tough Budget situation, Children’s Hospital to be built on St James campus Labour is committed to making sure this critical health project goes ahead and is built as quickly as possible. Cllr Dermot Lacey said ‘as a parent I know how important this project is, and we must ensure our children have access to state of the art health care facilities.’

We are delighted with this news, having worked closely with parents involved in the campaign. Their hard work and commitment has paid off, and it is intended to open in September 2014 with two classes of Junior Infants.
