PYLONS are neither needed nor wanted in the West of Ireland

What we know about Pylons ■ As far back a 1979 Childhood Leukaemia was associated with exposure to residential, electromagnetic fields. (Wertheimer & Leeper, 1979). Other reports since 1979 have discovered that it is not just childhood leukaemia. Adult leukaemia, brain tumours, Alzheimer’s, motor neurone disease and miscarriage have all been linked to EMF exposure.

■ In 2002, the California Health Department Services EMF Programme final report was released, in this they say, “An epidemiological literature is developing that associates magnetic fields with diseases and conditions that are more common than cancer, such as sudden cardiac death, dementia, suicide and spontaneous abortion.”

■ In 2005, what is generally referred to as The Draper Report was published. In this they also found a link between power lines and childhood cancer, this time at distances up to 600 metres.

What needs to be done? 1 2

An Energy Policy Forum, modelled on the Constitutional Convention, needs to be established.

3

A proper review of minimum distances from peoples homes, for both Wind Turbines and Electricity Pylons needs to happen urgently, as people’s health into the future goes way beyond political point scoring.

4

An insistence on the truth being told on this issue. For the past 40 years the west of Ireland had way enough electricity power and yet we didn’t benefit from a jobs boost, yet we are being told that if we don’t ‘embrace’ pylons, our children will have to emigrate!

As the European Commission has significantly scaled back on its mandatory energy targets post 2020, it surely is also time now for Eirgrid’s propsals regarding pylons, to be rowed back.
