BALLYMUN NEWS JOHN LYONS TD DELIVERING FOR BALLYMUN €390,000 FOR POPPINTREE PARK Following my work with the Department of the Sport, €390,000 in Sports Capital Funding has been granted for Poppintree Park. This funding will provide four new dressing rooms as well as a City Council park depot, car parking and other site works. Poppintree Park is well used as a recreation and sports facility for local residents, schools as well as many GAA and soccer clubs. It is a great local amenity but the existing changing facilities in the park are no longer fit for purpose for all the teams using the park. I have raised this issue many times saying the park needs improved facilities. Thankfully, this €390,000 funding has now been granted and will allow the building works to start this year. The building and site works should take about 12 months to complete. These works are the next phase in the completion plan for the park and will be followed by drainage works and further pitch improvements. I will continue to work with the Department, the City Council, Ballymun Regeneration Limited and local clubs and residents, on developing and improving this park in the coming years. John and Emer Costello MEP campaigning for a European Youth Guarantee
BALLYMUN YOUTH GUARANTEE APPLICATION Creating jobs is this government’s number one priority and I have made many suggestions about how we can deliver these jobs. Equally important is that people have the skills and work experience they need to get into jobs. This is why in this budget I supported the 16,500 new training and education places that will give people real skills to work in industries where there are jobs. This is good new but more can be done – particularly for young people out of work. Young jobseekers need extra supports and work training as many don’t have work histories or the skills they need for jobs. Youth unemployment in Ireland is at over 30% and it requires urgent attention. Ballymun has a higher number of young people aged between 15 and 24 than other towns, so we need to create more opportunities for young people in Ballymun. This is why I have secured an application for European Union funding to run a pilot ‘Youth Guarantee’ programme in Ballymun this year. If this pilot project goes ahead, it will help give young people in Ballymun better access to education and training supports, work experience places and career guidance.
