LABOUR DELIVERS €3 MILLION FOR DUBLIN 17's 'PREPARING FOR LIFE PROGRAMME'

The Labour Party is committed to tackling inequality and disadvantage in our society. This is why between 2013 -14 over €30 million will be allocated to the Area Based Childhood programme.

This scheme builds on previous commitments to the Prevention and Early Intervention Programme that saw the creation of three area based anti-poverty strategies.
€3.6M FOR BUNRATTY MAISONETTES Following on from our representations, the Labour Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan delivered the necessary funding to complete the work on the Bunratty Aodhán and Alison observing works currently Maisonettes. For being undertaken on the Bunratty Maisonettes a long time local residents have raised their concerns about how these homes were becoming an eye sore, and local families are in need of housing. Thanks to the perseverance of local residents and the local Labour team, we were able to ensure that the €3.6 million of funding needed for the necessary works was made available. Work began on the site in late 2012 and is on-going and the expected completion time is later this year.
LAURENCE LANDS SURVEY Last year Labour Councillors on Dublin City Council blocked a proposal to sell the Laurence Lands off the Oscar Traynor Road into private ownership. The Labour Party feel that these lands should be retained for the community. Local Area Representative Alison Gilliland is currently compiling a survey of residents living adjacent to these lands on what they feel these lands should be used for. The results of the survey will be delivered to the local Area Manager of Dublin City Council. Locally, the Preparing for Life Programme run by Northside Partnership received €3 million Aodhán & Alison outside the Preparing for Life offices in government funding for the Dublin 17 area. in Darndale Village These strategies aim to empower young parents from early pregnancy to when their children are at school-going age with positive interventions focused on literacy, diet and language. They are based on international best practice and research and are proven to make a real difference in communities. Aodhán said: “Both I and my colleague Alison Gilliland have worked hard with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform to deliver this funding and we are delighted that we have succeeded in delivering for the children that need it most.”
LABOUR GETTING THE NORTHSIDE BACK TO WORK Getting the Northside back to work has been Labour's first priority over the last three years. We have hosted four local employment roadshows in Kilmore, Donnycarney, Coolock and Donaghmede that have been attended by hundreds of people. We also held a youth unemployment forum in Coolock which was addressed by Dragons Den's Norah Casey. We are connecting local people with the services that can help them get through this phase in their lives.

Representatives from FÁS, JobBridge, JobCare, Citizens Information, NALA, CDVEC, EmployAbility and Northside Partnership have all taken part to help empower people to get re-trained, up-skilled or back into the workforce. Labour is the party of work. That is why: ■

FREE GP CARE FOR ALL CHILDREN AGED 5 AND UNDER - LABOUR DELIVERS AGAIN Free GP care for all children under the age of six is a major achievement for Labour in government. Announced in Budget 2014, the HSE Service Plan confirms that €37 million has been set aside to pay for the service. Very soon, the parents of over 420,000 children aged 5 and under, will no longer have to check their wallets before picking up the phone to their doctor. The government approved the General Scheme of the required legislation before Christmas. This sets out the blueprint of how it will work, and it is expected to be operational by the middle of this year. This reform will ensure that families don’t have to worry about finding the extra money for GP fees when one of their children gets sick. It has long been the view of the Labour Party that no parent should have to prioritise bills when their child needs medical care. This major change is only the first phase of introducing free GP care to the entire population, and will make a huge difference to hard pressed families.

LABOUR ESTABLISH 'BEAUMONT HOSPITAL FORUM' In recent months a number of controversial developments relating to Beaumont Hospital have caused concern for neighbouring residents: ■
The disgraceful construction of an elevated roadway to the rear of Ardmore Drive

The proposed ring-road affecting Beaumont Woods and the regular helicopter landings in the estate
■
The on-going parking problems associated with the hospital for residents in Kilmore West
As a result, the local Labour Party established a ‘Beaumont Hospital Forum’ where residents meet on a regular basis to work on matters of local concern. The forum has now met on a number of occasions and the chairmanship has been passed on to a member of the community. Real politics is about serving communities and empowering them. This forum now has the opportunity to deliver real results for the local residents.
SUCCESSFUL BUS CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT LOCAL ROUTES Residents will recall the successful campaign run by the Labour Party and Aodhán O Ríordáin TD to ensure that the local bus services 20B and 27B would continue to serve this community. The names of these services have changed, however the routes retain their importance to this side of the city.
MARINO TEACHER ACCESS PROGRAMME In April 2013 Aodhán worked closely with the Marino Institute of Education and Northside Partnership to help students attending DEIS schools improve their Irish Language skills.
While the adjusted service has taken some time to bed down, there have been some concerns outlined to us from local residents about the effectiveness of the new routes.
At present Higher Level Gaeilge is a minimum requirement for accessing teacher training colleges. Unfortunately this has proven to be a barrier in the past for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This new scheme will aid over 20 young people from nine Northside DEIS secondary schools in improving their Irish language skills.
Having been central to the campaign to save these routes, Aodhán and Alison Gilliland will continue to defend these local services and ensure their protection into the future.
Aodhán says: 'I have to pay tribute to my colleague Alison Gilliland for advice and support in setting up the scheme. Alison’s experience as a teacher in Darndale was crucial in helping me develop this programme in conjunction with the Marino Institute and Northside Partnership.'
