KEEPING IN TOUCH The Labour Party Summer 2013

Dear Constituent, These are challenging times for our country. The Government is determined to restore our economy, create jobs and give our children the future they deserve. It’s not an easy task and citizens have made real sacrifices as we work together to get our country back on track. Things are beginning to change for the better and Limerick is leading the way. Below are just some of the exciting projects that will improve our great City. I am proud to have played my part in advancing these projects and will continue to work day and night to represent all the people of Limerick as we work to restore our economy and society.

NEW ECONOMIC PLAN FOR LIMERICK

A long-term vision for the City up to 2020 was recently launched. It’s an exciting, ambitious, realistic plan. See more and have your say at www.limerickcity.ie/planning/economicdevelopment REGENERATION

This year I have allocated €28m for Limerick, the highest amount of any regeneration project in the country. The first homes built under regeneration were recently completed and I was delighted to welcome the new tenants in Moyross.

SHANNON AIRPORT

CITY OF CULTURE 2014

LIMERICK SMARTER TRAVEL

✓ ✓ ✓

Independent status has been delivered and Shannon Airport now has the capacity to become a real engine for investment, growth and jobs.

Limerick will be Ireland’s first City of Culture in 2014. A tremendous year of events will put on show Limerick’s vitality and energy.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY INVESTMENT Together with my colleague, Minister Brendan Howlin, I recently launched a new €50m investment fund for local authority houses. This big investment will see the energy efficiency of 25,000 local authority houses improved. This will mean lower energy bills and warmer homes for 25,000 families. The investment will also support hundreds of jobs in the energy sector. This year, Limerick will receive €430,000 under this initiative.

€9m will be invested over the next five years in cycling and walking facilities. This will be a great benefit to citizens and tourists alike. www.limericksmartertravel.ie UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL LIMERICK The construction of the new intensive care unit is complete and work will soon begin on a new inpatient ward. PRESERVING GEORGIAN LIMERICK The new ‘Living City’ Scheme has the potential to preserve and rejuvenate our historic Georgian heritage. LIMERICK COMMUNITY LAW & MEDIATION CENTRE The new centre provides free legal information, advice and representation to members of the public. Clinics are held at various locations around the city. The centre can be contacted at 061-536100.

BUILDING HOMES IN LIMERICK Together with my Labour colleagues on the City and County Council, I am committed to providing secure, high-quality housing for families in Limerick. The €28m investment in regeneration this year will see the construction programme ramp up. As the Minister in charge of regeneration I am determined that building homes is now the priority and that is happening. The first homes built under regeneration were recently completed and the keys handed over to new tenants in Moyross. Work continues to progress on the construction of sheltered housing in Southill and Vizes Court. Construction of a further 79 homes, a total investment of €12.7m, will begin in the coming months.

CREATING JOBS AND BUILDING COMMUNITIES

NEW BOOST FOR JOBSEEKERS

Job creation is the biggest single issue facing the country. About 2000 new jobs are being created every month and in recent times Limerick has seen major investments announced by both foreign and Irish companies. It’s good news.

The new ‘JobsPlus’ scheme, launched by my colleague Minister Joan Burton, is a major boost for jobseekers.

The Government has now established a €6.4 billion strategic investment fund. This fund will be invested in providing the essential infrastructure we need and provide thousands of jobs.

A sum of between €7,500 and €10,000 will be paid to employers over two years for each person they recruit who was previously unemployed for more than 12 months.

I’m working closely with my colleagues in Government on this important issue that will see major investment in schools, housing, energy and technology projects.

It is just one of a series of measures we’re taking to give the unemployed every opportunity to get back to work.

The scheme will see employers who take on long-term unemployed people receiving an incentive.
