orn in the Philippines and raised in Virginia, Erwin John Labra has the best of both worlds. Influenced by his rich multicultural background, both locations appear in his work. Much of Labra’s essence is
a fusion regarding his methods of processes and symbolism. “I’ve always gravitated to work that has a human quality present in it, there’s always an element of surprise in an imperfect detail,” says Labra. He takes risks in every project
and doesn’t exactly know what he’s going to get. But his undying optimism always keeps his designs proud, light, and spirited.

Information Graphics A visual score interpreted from a poem, Alan Lightman’s novel Einstein’s Dreams was a focal point of this composition. The premise was about time being frozen while everything is just passing by you and just being in that moment.

Children’s Museum of Richmond Package Design While interning for a local children’s museum, I had a chance to design their yearly Christmas ornament. This was a very exciting moment since I have never done packaging before. I was pleased with the outcome because every detail from my sketches came to life.

Decora Chan 2009 Typeface Design A type family inspired by the Japanese street fashion magazine named FRUiTS. It reflects an extreme decadence and indulgence. At the beginning of the process, I thought about paying an homage for the self obsessed youth in our society.

Illustration A series of drawings from scraps of paper, a sketchbook can become overwhelming with its blank pages. Most of the time it’s left unfinished. A sustainable use for drawings for me is carrying a large size paper everywhere. You can fold it many times and more accessible.
MoMa Exhibition poster 2009 Print With more and more posters produced directly from a computer, mixing fine art can generate a fresh look. Combining a hand made typographic collage and formulaic grid system, the overall image creates a conversation erasing boundaries.

Interactive Video Using a virtual reality software named Cubic Connector, I recreated a space for my family looking back at their cherished memories. I incorporated significant photos with an abstract type treatment to make every scene highly dynamic.
Empathist Typographic Design As I progressed through my designs, I noticed that just about everything I had ever designed used the same typefaces. I wanted to create a serif Avenir as a tribute to Adrian Frutiger. His typefaces has stood the test of time, and are the result of a dedicated spirit.

Publication Design Print is not dead! Some of them just needs to be redesigned just like this project. Nothing beats having something tangent to read after purchasing your favorite magazine. It will be a difficult road to the magazine world, but it’s my true calling since college.
