TITLE: Talking Back: Printmaking Inspired by Norman Rockwell and Barbara Kruger GRADE LEVEL: High School TIMELINE: One 90-minute period DESCRIPTION: For this lesson students will use newspaper or magazines in combination with text to talk back. They will draw inspiration from the Norman Rockwell posters at Art Institute of Chicago “Window on the War” exhibit and the artwork of feminist artist, Barbara Kruger. The visual language used on the Norman Rockwell illustrations created a form of propaganda while Kruger’s artwork critiques popular culture. Both of these examples utilize text as a way that creates a dialogue between the image and the carefully chosen words. For this art project, students will work collaboratively to talk back to an issue they find important or relevant. Each student will chose an image that relates to the theme and create a scratch-foam board print. The students will be given the opportunity to print their images one large sheet of paper to create a collaborative poster that talks back to the issue their group chooses. The students will speak their mind using text and printmaking to represent their message. Big Idea / Key Concept: Talking Back: Use your own voice to talk back to important issues Essential Questions: • How does imagery paired with text have an impact on the viewer? • Why is it important to address topics or issues that we find problematic? • How can we use text and imagery to talk back? OBJECTIVES: • Students will be able to compare and contrast the artwork of Norman Rockwell and Barbara Kruger to understand the impact of text when incorporated with imagery • Students will be able to apply their knowledge visual representation and create artwork with a clear and focused critique of an important issue • Students will be able to understand how art can mirror or challenge what is going on in society

STATE GOALS: STATE GOAL 25: Know the language of the arts. B. Understand the similarities, distinctions and connections in and among the arts. 25.B.4 Analyze and evaluate similar and distinctive characteristics of works in two or more of the arts that share the same historical period or societal context. STATE GOAL 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are produced. B. Apply skills and knowledge necessary to create and perform in one or more of the arts. 26.B.4dVisual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills that communicate clear and focused ideas based on planning, research and problem solving. STATE GOAL 27: Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present. B. Understand how the arts shape and reflect history, society and everyday life. 27.B.4b Understand how the arts change in response to changes in society. MOTIVATION / ACTIVITIES: • The students will fill out a think sheet that will help them choose a theme for their art project. • The students will be shown Norman Rockwell’s Freedom From Fear and Freedom From Want from the “Window on the War” exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. • The teacher will ask the students what they see and continue to have a discussion about the artwork. • The students will also be shown Barbara Kruger’s artwork, We Don’t Need Another Hero and I Shop therefore I am. • The teacher will ask the students what they see then they will compare and contrast Rockwell and Kruger’s artwork. They will also talk about how text plays a role in the examples. • After the students have discussed the artwork, they will look through the pile of magazine and newspaper clippings to find images that address their chosen topic, theme or issue. • Each student will choose two images that can be juxtaposed with one another to address their chosen theme. • After they choose their image, the students will brainstorm what comes to mind when they look at that image and begin to think of how they use it to talk back. • For this next step, students will transfer their image onto a scratch-foam board. The students will alter the image to make it their own. • Students will carve out their image (step by step instructions will be provided for the students). • When their scratch-foam board is complete the students will watch a demo of how to print. • At this point the students can decide how they want to collaboratively send a message. They can decide to use text within their individual sections or use one set of text that collectively addresses the images they create. The students must use some form of text that talks back to an image but the way they decide to do so is up to them.
