STUDENTS CREATED ARTWORK USING FOUND OBJECTS AND RECYCLED MATERIALS This project challenged students to turn found materials into “beautiful stuff”. Each student was given the opportunity to collect, discover, and organize materials as part of the artistic exploration. Once the students discovered a new purpose for these seemingly unconventional materials, they created artwork EXEMPL ARS using their “beautiful stuff”. Lindsay Abramo Lesson Plan TITLE: Beautiful Stuff: Creating Artwork with Found Materials GRADE LEVEL: Early Elementary TIMELINE: Two 45 minute periods DESCRIPTION: For this lesson students will turn found materials into “beautiful stuff”. Each student will be given the opportunity to collect, discover, and organize their materials as part of the artistic exploration. Once the students discover a new purpose for these seemingly unconventional materials, they will create artwork using their “beautiful stuff”. OBJECTIVES: • Students will use sensory skills to collect, discover, and organize materials • Students will use materials appropriately • Students will use creativity to create unique images out of found materials STATE GOALS: STATE GOAL 25: Know the language of the arts. A. Understand the sensory elements, organizational principles and expressive qualities of the arts. 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation. STATE GOAL 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are produced. B. Apply skills and knowledge necessary to create and perform in one or more of the arts. 26.B.1dVisual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works of art using manipulation, eye-hand coordination, building and imagination. STATE GOAL 27: Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present. B. Understand how the arts shape and reflect history, society and everyday life. 27.B.1 Know how images, sounds and movement convey stories about people, places and times. MOTIVATION / ACTIVITIES: Preparation: • Collect found objects and recycled materials • Separate the collected materials into small brown bags for each student (for the younger grades one bag per table or group is enough) Lindsay Abramo - Elementary Lesson Plan - Beautiful Stuff


DAY 1: Introduction: • Assess prior knowledge • Ask the students questions about found objects and recycled materials Demonstrate examples of different ways you can organize or short materials (color, shape, • size, etc.) • Ask students for examples or ideas Activities: • When the students return to their seats, pass out the brown bags and ask the students to take a moment to explore all of the objects in their bags • Prompt the students to start sorting, organizing, and categorizing (provide the younger grades with more guidance and instructions during this step) • Encourage the students to think of as many different ways to sort, organize, and categorize the objects found in their bag • Walk around the room assessing the students work, providing feedback, and announcing creative ideas that the students come up with • At the end of class have the students return the materials to their bags • Call on a few students and ask them to share what they though about today’s activity DAY 2: Introduction: • Assess prior knowledge • Ask the students what activity they worked on in the last class • Ask the students what was talked about and learned in the last class Introduce the “Beautiful Stuff” project • • Demonstrate how the students can create artwork using the found objects and recycled materials in their brown bags • Ask students for examples or ideas Activities: • When the students return to their seats, pass out the brown bags and ask the students to take a moment to explore all of the objects in their bags • Give each student a piece of colored paper • Provide the students with a prompt (Use the materials in your bag to create your favorite animal, show what you like to do after school, etc.) • The students will begin arranging the objects on their paper to create their artwork • The students will arrange the objects until the next prompt, then they will start again • Walk around the room assessing the students work, providing feedback, taking pictures, and announcing creative ideas that the students come up with • Stop the students about 15 minutes before the end of class and have them take a gallery walk around the room to look at the artwork their classmates have created • At the end of class have the students return the materials to their bags

CLOSURE: • Call on a few students to share • Ask them what they though about this project • Ask them what was their favorite artwork they created Finish with a final closing statement about the project • MATERIALS: • Found objects and recycled materials • Colored construction paper • Small brown bags EXEMPLAR:
