ELEMENTARY ART LESSON

For this lesson students will learn

ART INSPIRATION

about GARDENING, COLORS, and PAINTING while creating COLLABORATIVE ARTWORK with their classmates. The students will use crayons and paint to create their own colorful gardens on long banners of paper. The students will be given the opportunity to work collaboratively with their classmates to create a huge class garden.

Lindsay Abramo Lesson Plan TITLE: Planting the Rainbow: Painting Collaborative Gardens GRADE LEVEL: Early Elementary TIMELINE: Three 45 minute periods DESCRIPTION: For this lesson students will learn about gardening, colors, and painting while creating collaborative artwork with their classmates. They will draw inspiration from Lois Ehlert’s children’s book, Planting the Rainbow. This book teaches students how to plant a garden and illustrates the all of the different colored flowers that can be found in a garden. The students will use crayons and paint to create their own colorful gardens on long banners of paper. The students will be given the opportunity to work collaboratively with their classmates to create a huge class garden. Essential Questions: • How can painting gardens teach students about colors while learning how to paint? • How can students work together to create a realistic garden painting? • How can students create collaborative flower garden paintings by using materials in a responsible manner? OBJECTIVES: • Students will use their knowledge of colors to paint flowers that use all of the colors of the rainbow • Students will be able to work together to create a collaborative garden painting that will help them learn more about the community garden that will be installed at their school • Students will be able to use paint and paint brushes properly STATE GOALS: STATE GOAL 25: Know the language of the arts. A. Understand the sensory elements, organizational principles and expressive qualities of the arts. 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation. STATE GOAL 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are produced. A. Understand processes, traditional tools and modern technologies used in the arts. 26.A.1e Visual Arts: Identify media and tools and how to use them in a safe and responsible manner when painting, drawing and constructing. STATE GOAL 27: Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present. B. Understand how the arts shape and reflect history, society and everyday life. 27.B.1 Know how images, sounds and movement convey stories about people, places and times. MOTIVATION / ACTIVITIES: • Day 1: • Discussion • Talk about the community garden that is being installed at their school • Assess prior knowledge about colors, gardening, flowers, and bugs • Introduce Planting the Rainbow by Lois Ehlert • Read the book aloud and ask the students questions throughout Introduce the project • • Talk about gardens and show exemplar for the project • Demo how to properly use the materials • Divide the students into two groups and demonstrate how to work collaboratively • The students look at reference images of plants and flowers • The students will start drawing their gardens with crayons • The students will start filling in their drawings with paint • Day 2: • Recap what we did last class • Ask students what they remember from last week • Demo how to properly use the materials • The students will continue filling in their drawings with paint • Students can begin adding bugs and other details to the garden paintings • Day 3: • Recap what we did last class • Ask students what they remember from last week • Demo how to properly use the materials • The students will fill in the sky and the ground using a watercolor wash technique CLOSURE: • I will ask students to describe the project and what they have been working on • Students will do a garden walk at the end of the project to look at the completed artwork MATERIALS: • Long banner of paper • Paint and paint brushes • Crayons SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS: Planting the Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, reference images, and exemplars
