LA CALA NEWS

WELCOME

Dear Members, Residents and Guests, Welcome to the latest edition of our resort newsletter. Since 2005, La Cala has been formally recognised as the biggest golf resort in Spain by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. A more recent honour has been the award of the first gold medal by Promotur. These local awards are valuable measures of how La Cala is viewed by our Spanish peers and by the local and regional authorities. Of equal importance at the present time, is the position of La Cala within the wider European Community. Throughout this magazine you will find many references to La Cala’s growing European credentials. Over the last 20 years, “La Cala has developed strong business links with many European countries and their citizens”. For example, the resort’s promoter is the publicly quoted Irish Insurance Company, FBD Holdings plc while the Swedish Golf Federation was one of the founding partners. The recent hosting of the International Lady Junior Championship organised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation is a case in point. Congratulations to Maria Elena Villamil from Madrid who defeated Noora Tamminen from Finland in the final. The large contingent of golfers that visit annually includes dozens of travelling groups from all across Europe, often with their teaching professionals. The line up of top class football squads that have chosen the resort for their winter training camp reads like a “Who’s Who” of European club football. La Cala has long been a favourite location for companies wishing to assemble their European representatives in one place for a meeting or to demonstrate their latest new products. Almost all European countries are now represented in the cosmopolitan community of home owners and members at the resort. In particular, a special welcome to all our newest residents in our Monte Alto and Real Altavista Golf developments. This group includes Iain Macaulay who was our first La Cala Captain in 1998.

“La Cala has developed strong business links with many European countries and their citizens”

Last but not least, I am delighted to wish James Reid and Susanne Valentin every success in their roles as captains for 2010. Whether you are here full-time or are visiting the resort for your holidays or celebrations, don’t forget that you can stay in touch with all the news and offers through our website.

Thank you for choosing La Cala

alicia, the winning team in the VI La Cala Junior Masters. The annual inter-federation 36-hole strokeplay competition takes place every January at La Cala Resort. Teams of two boys and two girls compete over two days with the best three scores on each day counting.

The winning Galician team

Jose Luis Catoira, captain of the winning Galician team of Mandy Goyos, Gabriel Alonso, Álvaro Veiga and Barbara Castro, commented: “We derive great satisfaction to return each year to La Cala Resort to take part in this competition. The level of the participants this year has been the highest, and thus gives greater value to our victory. I would like to thank La Cala Resort and the Real Andalusian Federation of Golf for the

magnificent organisation of the event. José Luis praised also the great play of his team, one of whom, Mandy Goyos, not only achieved the best individual result from among all the participants with a round of 70, but also becomes the only player who has won the La Cala Resort Junior Master´s title three times, beating the records of Azahara Muñoz and Belén Mozo, two of the current stars in ladies golf. Galicia have now won the trophy three times, equalling that achieved by the Andalucía region. The high level of the players competing in the competition reflects the high regard in which La Cala Resort is held in Spanish amateur golf circles. Its aim is to continue promoting competition at the highest level among promising young Spanish players with the goal of improving overall standards and cementing Spain’s position in junior golf at a European level. álaga’s Pablo Martín, was presented with the La Cala Resort Junior Masters Player of the Year award at the launching ceremony of this year´s Junior Masters, a prestigious inter-regional team event played every January. Pablo created history by being the first amateur to win on tour, when he

captured the 2007 Estoril Open de Portugal. He turned professional a few months later but found the transition tough, struggling for form for almost two years before adding a second European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, the first event of the 2010 Race to Dubai. Pablo was part of the Andalucía team that won the inaugural Junior Masters, played at La Cala Resort in 2004. He said “We had a blast. I remember it was such good fun and a rare chance to play with the best girls. We have all remained friends and I follow the progress of all three. It´s something that maybe other professional players don´t possess – that lasting friendship with female players and tha is down to this competition. I am not too surprised by the success of my former teammates”. The format is a four-person team, comprising of the top two boys and girls from the region. That Andalucía team is becoming increasingly famous. Álvaro Quirós has won three times on Tour, twice in 2009 and now is in the world´s top 50. Not to be outdone, Azahara Muñoz also won on her professional debut when last October she captured the Ladies Masters in Madrid.

Andalucia, with 102, is the region with the most clubs, followed by Catalonia with 46. Commenting on the announcement, La Cala´s Managing Director Denis Foley said: “We are delighted to be the largest golf resort in the country. Obviously Spain is one of the most important world markets in terms of golf tourism. Our aim has always been to be not only the biggest but also to be the best. Our 3 courses, Leadbetter Academy, hotel/spa and other facilities are the main reasons why clients invest in a second home at La Cala and become members of a vibrant community of owners.”

that we represent at FITUR, one of them is dedicated to golf and can be accessed by anybody around the world through internet.” The news has also been welcomed by the Real Andalucian Golf Federation. “The RFGA is delighted that La Cala Resort continues as the market leader for golf resorts in the country. It shows the importance of Andalucía as a major golf destination and highlights the range of world class facilities in the region. La Cala has not sacrificed quality for size and the standard of its courses and facilities is evidenced by the number of prestigious national and international competitions held on its three 18-hole courses.”

The Mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sánchez, received the news with great pleasure: “This is a very important asset for Mijas, to have the biggest golf resort of the country and the leader in its sector. This positive influence for the municipality has been extended to the Costa del Sol and the facilities have recognition through all Europe. We are sure that La Cala Resort will continue to lead the way in promoting excellence in tourism. As the Town Hall, we continue promoting this area, for example in the new theme guides

Ramón Dávila, the President of PROMOTUR said: “We are very proud to have a member such as La Cala Resort. It is the biggest and most important resort in Spain and it’s important that other investors follow its example. Twenty years of hard work has transformed agricultural land into an extraordinary resort, both for Andalucía and for Spain.” La Cala Resort is an example for all resort developments in the sector of residential tourism. When we look at the future of this type of development in Andalucía, we don´t have to imagine what we should be aiming for, as we already have the model complex in La Cala Resort.

there was a great international community of owners in the complex, who regarded La Cala as their first or second home”. He added that it was an honour to be recognised by PROMOTUR, an association that has done so much to promote the residential tourism and sports sector in the region.

he 5th La Cala GolfWorld Open played at the end of November 2009 at La Cala Resort, attracted players from all over Europe. This 54-hole event is unique in the region as the competitors play the three La Cala 18-hole courses: Campo America, Campo Asia and Campo Europa over three days. There is a real party atmosphere for the tournament with the pairings changing each day and this combined with the unique format and excellent weather, means many of the players now consider it a permanent fixture in their diaries.

There was an increase in the number of Finnish and Spanish players in addition to golfers from all over the UK and Ireland, Russia, The Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavia and France. The event was won by Alexy Vershinin. A native of Russia, he is based in Germany where he works for a Russian company. He only started to play golf three years ago when his wife told him to look for another sport as he was

getting too old for ice-hockey. He described his victory as “a dream come true” and added, “we get three days of competition golf and an extra day’s free round in good, sunny weather. The people who play in this event are very nice company and I really enjoyed it.” As part of his prize he has been invited to play the competition and stay in Hotel La Cala next year, free of charge. La Cala’s Director of Leisure is José Navas. “One of the reasons this competition is such a success is that we adapt it to meet the requests of the players. To increase further the social element, next year we will replace the practice day with a Texas Scramble. This will give the competitors a chance to play with even more people. We are also dropping the prices and we believe the package will be unbeatable for value and enjoyment.”

ongratulations to Maria Elena Villamil from Madrid who won the International Lady Junior Championship played on Campo America. In the first round of matches she defeated the leading qualifier, Celine Boutier from France and continued her fine play all the way to the final where she had a 3&1 win over Noora Tamminen from Finland.

Maria Elena was thrilled to secure the title. “I played regularly enough in the strokeplay rounds but my putting greatly improved in the matchplay. I really enjoyed the course, which was in excellent condition and the speed of the greens was very good. This autumn I am planning on starting a university course in association with the Federation in Madrid and before then I will be playing in the major amateur competitions in Spain and overseas.” The runner-up, 19-year old Noora Tamminen was also loud in her praise of the course. “I liked it a lot. Although I wanted to win I’m satisfied with second. I intend to turn pro in the future and in October I am hoping to represent Finland in the World Championships in Argentina.” The event was organised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation in conjunction with the staff and members at La Cala. The last time the event was held in La Cala was in 2007 and the French winner Julie Greciet went on to qualify for the Ladies European Tour. Louth wins GAA Legends Inter-County Championship

L

outh have won the three-day GAA Legends All-Ireland Golf Charity event, played at La Cala Resort. The competition began on Wednesday, May 12th and involved teams from the 32 counties, comprised of former star hurlers and footballers. Each team raises funds for their chosen charity and the event is expected to raise €75,000 for a range of worthy causes. The finish could not have been closer with three counties, Louth, Kildare and Kerry all finishing on the same score after the three days. Louth took the title on a count back with Kerry, Kildare, Roscommon and Monaghan taking the provincial titles. All the competitors raised significant sums of money to attend the event with the winners getting €25,000, which will be going for cancer research in the Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.

The president of the GAA, Christy Cooney, who also participated, said the fundraiser is already an important event for the association. “This is now a permanent fixture in the GAA calendar with the money raised benefiting those who need it most in our communities. It is appropriate it is now an official charity of the GAA. Everything went extremely well. The resort has been great with the course, staff and hospitality all first-class. This competition gives former players the opportunity to meet again and to be competitive for their chosen charities.” One of those playing is former Kerry footballing great Darragh O’Shea. “It’s absolutely fantastic. The venue is great and so is the organisation. It is my first time here and I hope it continues for many years. The .location is ideal, having everyone in the one place. I really enjoyed the courses too.” Down’s Greg McCartan agreed: “This is my second year here and it’s brilliant. We are very well looked after. There is a lot of organisation involved and everything has run very smoothly. It’s also nice to see a bit of sun after the Irish winter. Kerry’s John Keane, a son of the renowned playwright, John B. Keane, said it was a few days to remember. It’s a super event and fantastic fun. That’s what it’s all about, a great way to renew former friendships and raise funds for charity while having great fun.” The Chairperson of the organising committee, Bernard Flynn, says that traditionally there has been a great bond between GAA players when they retire, especially on the golf course. “It has been an important factor in cementing many of those friendships thus leading to this unique event. It is nice as a group to give something back.”

CALA NEWS La LA Cala is one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for hosting visiting Golf Club professionals and their members A growing number of Pros are bringing groups of members to resorts like La Cala where the members can stay to enjoy a hasslefree holiday with their friends while also receiving tuition from their own professional. The typical group stays for a week. An average day may begin with a trip to the Academy after breakfast followed by a round of golf on the one of the three courses after lunch with the afternoons spent relaxing in the Spa. The groups normally take advantage of the special half-board hotel rates to enjoy their evening meal together in the resort’s restaurant. Some Golf Professionals arrange back-to-back groups with one class arriving as another departs. Many Golf Professionals who can only get away for a short period prefer the overseas Pro-Am option whereby their regional PGA association makes all the arrangements leaving the Golf Club Professional to attend with his own team of amateurs. Again La Cala is a popular destination choice with its three courses and on-site Hotel & Spa in a single location close to the airport. National federations also take advantage of the facilities at La Cala to train their elite amateur squads during the winter months as do some individual professionals with their coaches. Last but not least, are the informal groups of golfing friends who enjoy getting away from the winter weather for a few days golf in the sun. Indeed, many members whose first visit is with their teaching pro return later with family and friends. The visiting groups come from a wide range of countries across Europe as can be seen from the examples and map presented below making La Cala one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for hosting visiting Golf Club professionals and their members.

LA CALA NEWS European football teams choose La Cala Resort for the winter training La Cala Resort is one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for Warm Winter Training in field sports including soccer both professional and amateur La Cala has a growing reputation as a warm weather training location for professional football teams and for leading amateur outfits from gaelic and other sports. The teams are regular visitors and are attracted back by the mild winter climate, the extensive range of facilities and the secluded location that offers privacy yet is near Málaga airport. Additionally, the teams squads have exclusive use of the grass sports field and access to the full range of the resort’s facilities, including the gymnasium and Caracala Spa. Their diets and nutritional ned are prepared in consultation with the catering staff. The teams that have visited this year are listed below and reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ in European Football making La Cala one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for warm winter training in field sports including soccer both professional and amateur. GRASSHOPPER Club Zurich

Team Manager, Dragan Rapic, said the extensive range of facilities and their exclusive use was very important in their decision to come to the resort for the first time and he said they are definitely considering returning next winter. “All in all we spent an excellent week in La Cala and there is nothing we can complain about. The location, food, hotel, professionalism of the staff were to our full satisfaction. Bearing in mind that there was a team training one week before our arrival and the heavy rainfall, the quality of the pitch was surprisingly good. So excellent work was done by the green keepers. “For the training sessions we used the Gym (next to the training ground). All the players liked to use the Caracala Spa in order to relax after the hard work. In the spare time some staff members had their first golf experience at the Leadbetter Academy’s driving range.”

BORUSSIA Mönchengladbach

The team’s head coach is Michael Frontzeck, a former German international. He said they were very happy with the January training camp and were particularly delighted to have a dry week and a pitch that was in excellent condition. He described the break as a good, short week at a resort that has everything that they required. “The pitch and hotel were perfect for our needs. We used the other facilities such as the gym and spa and have no complaints. It’s very important to have a good week to set us up for the remainder of the season and we are now looking forward to that.

LEGIA Warsaw

The club first used the La Cala complex for a training camp last year and Assistant Coach, José Antonio Vicuña (Kibu) from Navarre, says they returned because of the professional facilities. “The facilities are excellent for a top class professional team and allow us to train in optimum conditions. Additionally, the service we receive from all the staff is excellent. In Poland in January and February, the temperatures reach -25C to -30C and the pitches are covered in snow and it is very difficult to train properly. We are delighted to be able to train in La Cala and we plan to return next year.

SPARTA Prague

The most successful football club in the Czech Republic, Sparta Prague, have given a ringing endorsement to La Cala Resort after spending a 10-day training camp. The club’s Head of Communications, Ondrej Kasik, says “We have been to many hotels around Europe for mid-season training and La Cala is different. We feel at home here. It is difficult to explain but the atmosphere is so welcoming and relaxed we don’t feel any stress. Our families aren’t here but we feel like it’s our home for 10 days. Last year was the first time we used the complex for our winter break and we certainly hope to return next year. The training facilities are great. It is so important for us to be able to train on a good, grass pitch. At present it is -18C in Prague and we would have to train indoors while it is 20 or 22ºC here when the sun is out. We have also been using the gym and Caracala Spa and some of the players have been golfing.” Ondrej added that another great bonus was the chance to play against other top European teams that are also training in the area. “We have played five ‘friendlies’ against opposition from a number of countries. It is great for the coaches to see the new players in match action and it is also good for the players to take on opposition from different leagues instead of always playing other Czech teams.”

DYNAMO Moscow

This is the fourth consecutive year that the club has chosen to prepare for the coming season in La Cala. Spokesman Konstantin Alexeev says: “La Cala is a quiet location for us. We are the only team at the complex and the pitch is near the hotel. We are also close to Malaga and Marbella, where there are other teams, so we can play friendly matches. We are very happy with all the facilities in the resort. In spite of all the rain in recent weeks, the pitch is in very good condition. All the other facilities are also at a very high level. Right now it is at freezing point in Moscow, so we are pleased to be able to train in warmer weather.

METALLURG DONETSK Head Coach, Nikolai Kostov, says the main aim of the training break was to ‘bedin’ a new squad with a lot of recently-signed players. “This break gave us the opportunity to blend together as a team and unite. We have a lot of new players and it is important for them to get to know each other and a foreign trip allows us to do that better than at home. Our goal this season is to qualify for the UEFA Europa League and I’m hopeful that this trip will help us to do that. “This was our first time to stay at La Cala Resort and we were very happy with the conditions. The food and the nutrition provided was very, very good and another big advantage is the relaxing surroundings. It is so calm and beautiful here and mentally that is very beneficial for the players. We also had the opportunity to play three friendlies during our stay. At the moment it is -10C in Donetsk, so training is quite difficult and these matches are important for the coaching staff to monitor how the players are progressing as a team.” WATERFORD HURLING TEAM This was the team’s first visit to Spain having used Portugal for winter training over the last two years. Although amateurs, they held intensive training sessions two or three times a day. The 34 players were accompanied by a backroom staff of 13 including specialist coaches and physiotherapists. The Waterford manager, Davy Fitzgerald, was fulsome in his praise for the quality of the installations and the attention they received. “The facilities here are just brilliant. The pitch is top class and meets all our needs. We’ve also been using the gym, spa, tennis courts and the golf courses. It makes such a difference having everything you want available in the same place. The staff have been terrific and very welcoming. When you add in the location here in the mountains, yet so near Malaga airport, there is no doubt but we will be back in the future.”

Norwegian Church raises €10,000

T

he Norwegian Church, Sjomannskirken, in Calahonda (Mijas) has raised approximately €10,000 through the yearly fundraising golf competition at La Cala Resort, Mijas, Málaga, last 6th February. Over 120 golfers entered the competition, played on Campo America and Campo Europa, two of three 18-hole courses in Spain’s largest golf complex.

The Sjomannskirken churches are an international network of social meeting places where Norwegians can “feel at home” in any corner of the world. Founded in 1864, the organisation was established to secure the moral and religious education of Scandinavian seamen, but also to give them a “breathing space” where a fellow countryman was available to lend an ear and give some attention.

he 16th annual Cudeca Cup fundraising golf competition held at La Cala Resort raised almost €8,000 for the cancer care organisation. Cudeca provides palliative home care, free of charge, to patients suffering from advanced cancer and to their families. It has also opened a hospice in Benalmadena and the funds will go towards

the day-to-day running costs of the hospice and the organisation, which receives no state funding. The President and founder of Cudeca, Joan Hunt O.B.E., expressed her gratitude to all the people who supported the competition and pointed out that well over €110,000 had been raised by the La Cala competitions since the event began in 1994. “This event is a lifeline for us as we have no regular income. It was a wonderful day with great, sunny weather, fine golf and a super lunch.” The stableford competition was held on the resort’s Campo America, one of three 18-hole championship courses on Spain’s biggest golf complex. The event was organised by Cudeca volunteer and La Cala member Joan Stock. She wanted to pay particular tribute to the La Cala members who raised €2,000 through a weekly ‘birdie’ competition and Maggie Coombes who personally sold over €800 worth of raffle tickets. The overall winner was La Cala Resort member, Hazel Gilchrist with a magnificent 41 points off 21 handicap.

P.A.D. Golf and Fun Day

A

lmost one hundred golfers took part in this charity competition on Campo Asia as a way to help PAD (Association of Protection of Domestic Animals) to continue

their admirable work; rescuing abandoned animals. The day consisted not only on the golf tournament but also in several fun activities organized in the clubhouse garden and a prize-giving lunch for golfers and non golfers to raise extra funds. The winning team of the texas scramble format was Danny & Carol Rees and Gordon Edwards & Robert Wilcox. La Cala members Susanne Valentin, Sonya Foster, Cecelia Massey and Joan Sotck were the organizing committee of this first edition of what is intended to be an annual event. Living the Dream

La Cala Resort is one of the leading Residential Golf Resorts in Europe The last few months have seen an upsurge in the number of properties being purchased at the resort. There is hardly a week that goes by where we are not handing over the keys of a Monte Alto Townhouse or a Real Altavista Apartment to their new owners. The cosmopolitan nature of the existing community of owners is being further enhanced with new residents from Austria; Belgium; Denmark; Germany; Holland; Russia; Switzerland; Sweden and the United Kingdom. Most European countries are now represented in the community of owners at the resort as can be seen from the map below making La Cala Resort one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe. Owners have been attracted by the peace and tranquillity, the amazing views, the three golf courses, Hotel, Spa and other resort facilities. Not to mention the resort’s location near the coast, airport, schools and hospitals.

The special offers on golf membership when buying directly from the promoter continue as does the Privilege Card Scheme, which offers owners a number of advantages at the various resort facilities. The remainder of this special lifestyle section includes two interesting interviews. The first is with Iain Macaulay who recently purchased and moved into a MonteAlto Townhouse. Iain was the first La Cala Captain in 1998. The second is a copy of an interview with Pedro Negrette, La Cala’s Property Director, which was published in Spring 2010 edition of the prestigious Homes Overseas Magazine. A digital version of the magazine including the interview is available on www.homesoverseasmagazine.com. The Homes Overseas Magazine dates back to 1965, claiming to give homebuyers the best independent advice and information on purchasing abroad for nearly 45 years.

Living the Dream W hat our Residents Say

First Captain becomes Resident

“I

t is really lovely here. It has struck me since I moved in that it’s really a village with a great atmosphere. We’re very, very happy.” This is according to Iain Macaulay, who together with his wife Alla moved into a new townhouse at Monte Alto in La Cala Resort this spring. What makes their decision to invest in the Monte Alto development particularly interesting is Iain’s long association with the resort. He holds the honour of being the first captain of the golf club back in 1998 and has been an active member of the club ever since. Iain explains why after such a long association with the complex, he decided to come here to live now. “A townhouse in Monte Alto was very attractive for us because of its size and location. We had a large villa with a big garden and pool and it was becoming a bit of a chore to maintain it. La Cala is a beautiful place and the urbanization is of very high quality with breathtaking views. There is also a great atmosphere here with a fantastic social life. I have played golf from a young age and play three days a week. I’m now going to be able to practice more as well. It suits us and we are very, very happy.”

at the London Polytechnic he went to work as a hairdresser on a ship taking British emigrants to a new life in Australia. A talented musician, he was also one of the top two young pipers in Scotland and subsequently spent his national service teaching piping at Fort George, near Inverness, and helping to form a new military highland brigade pipe band. Furthermore, he was one of the participants in the first ever staging of the now world-famous military tattoo in Edinburgh. During this time he also played for the army basketball side against the Harlem Globetrotters at Wembley and even trained for a very short spell with the Arsenal juniors at Highbury.

Both Iain and Alla hail from climates about as far removed from the sun-kissed southern Spanish coastline as you could imagine. Alla is from Russia while Iain comes from the tiny island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, off the North West coast of Scotland. He grew up on the family croft during the second world war and later studied in Aberdeen and London. After leaving school in 1947 and studying

Iain married his late wife Ginny in 1966 and had three children. Andrew, with three boys, is in telecommunications in the United Sates. John, with a boy and girl, is an accountant in London while Kathy, with three boys and two girls, works in insurance marketing in the south of England. Iain and Ginny’s birthdays were only one day apart and for their 60th in 1990, the children threw a surprise party. They invited

After leaving the army Iain joined the then top fashion Steiner salon in the West End and over the years helped establish salons in a number of exclusive hotels, department stores and cruise ships, as well as in the high streets, with their own brand product range. He rose to the position of Managing Director in the firm which employed over 1,500 people, finally opening his own, similar business in 1983.

many of the couple’s older friends and one of the guests invited them to a holiday at his apartment on the Costa del Sol. It turned out to be a life-changing invitation. Iain explains: “We had been planning on buying a holiday home in Normandy in northern France. We wanted to be near to the children and their families. However, after just one day here we changed our minds. It was not a bit like London. The people were more openly friendly and smiling. It reminded me so much of my, very safe, seaside holidays as a child. The atmosphere was great, and after a week we started to look for a property to buy and completed the deal on an apartment before flying back to the U.K.. After I retired in 1994 we moved out to live full-time and three years later we bought a villa.” Ginny passed away in 2001 and Iain later met Alla. They married in Russia. “Alla was keen to live in Monte Alto”, says Iain. “She had already made friends here at the resort. People planning to move to Spain should be aware that it can be lonely at the start and this is one of the big advantages of living in La Cala. There is a great community here and all I have to do is sit down in the clubhouse for five minutes and I will meet loads of people I know. Anyone planning to move here only has to give me a bit of notice and I will introduce them to at least 40 people within 7 days. There is no need to be lonely here. It is what you make it. There is no point in sitting in a corner waiting for people to pay homage to you. People here are on a seven-day weekend. They are all here for only one purpose and that is to enjoy themselves. When you reach retirement age, if you’re lucky, you will have six to eight lifelong friends that are still around. Within the first five years of being here I must have met 20 people with whom I’ve already spent more time than I spent with all my long-term friends back in Britain. Some people are worried about leaving their children or grandchildren. Don’t be. We saw more of our grandchildren in Spain than in the U.K. and they still love to come to visit and now bring their girlfriends and boyfriends.”

Iain is also quite confident that now is the right time to buy in La Cala. “There are more new people buying here all the time. That is always a good sign as the value of the properties will rise as more and more are sold. It is a very attractive, controlled environment in the estate and we know exactly where any future developments are to be located. Our townhouse overlooks the 14th tee of Campo America. The view is stunning and the community pools are beautiful. I’m very pleased with the quality and finish of the urbanization and the townhouse. I have had 14 homes in my life and the handover of this property was the most professional I have ever encountered. While we were signing the deeds, the electricity was connected. I was then given a personal file with all the necessary paperwork completed and with instructions in English for the domestic appliances, alarms, remotes, etc. It was most impressive as was my treatment by all the La Cala staff. I don’t ever plan on moving again.”

Winners of Irish national competition stay at La Cala Resort

H

eadfort Golf Club, the winning team in the annual 3Ts All Ireland Golf Tournament spent a week at La Cala Resort during November. This national golf tournament was first launched in 2003 by 3Ts as a means of raising awareness and funding for suicide prevention in Ireland and the trip to La Cala was part of the winners’ prize. Since its inception the tournament has been supported by leading professional players, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke and this year also received the support of Rory McIlroy. The tournament has also been very well received by Irish golfers with 8,000 to 12,000 golfers participating annually from golf clubs nationwide.

Joe MacAvin, 3Ts Golf Tournament Coordinator said: “This is one of the key annual fundraising events for the 3Ts and we are increasingly delighted every year with the interest and response from clubs around the country. We are also very proud of the fact that four of Ireland’s top golfers are willing to lend their time to supporting the tournament. The money raised from the tournament goes toward funding crucial projects to build the 3Ts Awareness Campaign for action, intervention and prevention of suicide at all levels of our society.”

Headfort Golf Club with La Cala Golf team

The team format for 2009 was the Club Captain, the winners of men’s and ladies’ competitions and the club PGA Professional. The teams had to win both regional and national finals to qualify for the La Cala trip. The winners were from the Headfort club and they were accompanied by the General Secretary of the Irish Professional Golfers Association, Michael McCumiskey, and the club pro, Brendan McGovern, who played on the European Tour for five years and is recognised as one of Ireland’s top golfers. The team played against a La Cala selection and also met with Carlos Roca, the President of the Spanish Professionals Golfers’ Association.

Members’ Festival Week The 10th Members’ Festival Week attracted large numbers of entries. The highlight of the week was the battle for the club championships. Originally intended to be 36-hole events, the championships were shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather. The men’s winner was Roger Dew whose 5 over par 76 on Campo Europa earned him the title on a count back from defending champion Greg Bacon. The ladies title was won by Ursula Wetzel whose 77 gave her a four shot winning margin over the defending ladies champion, Anneli Alanen.

The Millenium Cup four-ball went to Ingegerd Forsell and Markku Railo with 44 points, the Texas Scramble was won by Louis & Judi Lentelink and Danny & Carol Rees while the Rest of the World team defeated the Nordic Countries in a fitting team finale to a most enjoyable week.

The men’s stableford champion is Manfred Wetzel with 40 points while the ladies champion is Carin Olsson after 35 points over the testing course that was playing long on the day due to back tees and strong winds.

CALA NEWS La LA Cala is one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for hosting meetings with staff based all around European La Cala has long been a favourite location for companies wishing to assemble their European representatives in one place for a meeting or to demonstrate their latest new products. The natural green terrain of the golf courses has provided impressive backdrops for many car launches including Daewoo; Honda; Peugeot; Porsche and Toyota. Cosmetic companies like Wella and Clarins are attracted by the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. Financial Institutions like the ability to mix business with golf. The closeness to Malaga airport is a big consideration given the high number of airlines providing daily services to almost every major destination in Europe. Having a Hotel/Spa and Golf facilities in a single location at La Cala also contributes to the success of the product launch as the promoter gets to spend the greatest amount of quality time with its representatives. There are also examples of local branches of European companies hosting events at La Cala to sell their products to the cosmopolitan population that is resident in La Cala and the wider Costa del Sol. A number of recent examples are presented below. In particular, your attention is drawn to the product launch by the US based company Toro who flew in their representatives from 10 European Countries to join the team from Minnesota. Evidence that La Cala is one of the leading residential golf resorts in Europe for hosting meetings with staff based all around Europe.

Bridgestone ball fitting Clinic

T

he Bridgestone Golf company held a ball-fitting clinic in the buggy parking area on consecutive days in January. The company has six different ball models on the market and golfers were invited to compare the performance of the Bridgestone balls with other top brands. The results were recorded on the ubiquitous hightech equipment and many of the customers were said to have been surprised at how much difference there is between the varying models. Ball-fitter Marcos Cuevas said: “A lot of golfers are playing the wrong ball. We have seen many people, especially from handicap 15 up, who are losing 15-25 yards from the tee solely because of their ball choice. The correct ball should be related to your swing speed and the amount of spin you put on the ball.

DLGA New Director: Laurence Brotheridge

T

he David Leadbetter Golf Academy at the resort has appointed a new professional.

La Cala Resort welcomes Laurence Brotheridge, the new Academy Director/Head Teaching PGA Qualified Professional to the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Laurence Brotheridge grew up as a promising scratch golfer in Bahrain competing in various tournaments around the Middle East. The teaching side however proved more attractive, prompting him to enrol into the University of Brimingham and British PGA in 2003. He graduated with BA Honours in Applied Golf Management and PGA Level 3 qualification. In 2007, he was recruited by IMG to be a David Leadbetter Instructor at DLGA Austria and DLGA Bradenton, Florida. As a fully certified DLGA instructor, he has assisted David Leadbetter and his staff in lessons with promising youngsters and tour pros. Some of his previous students have included Austria´s top junior golfer and Brazil´s Amateur and Junior Open winner and his coaching philosophy is to provide a simple, effective and enjoyable lesson.

FIZZ YOUR IRONS Tour Players seem too fizz their irons like bullets with the ball stopping very quickly on the greens or even loaded with backspin. To be able to achieve this you first have to understand the physics of impact and compression. You can think of pool or billiards; to get the white ball to jump over a red ball for instance. You would not try to angle your cue stick to go up and over the ball but instead to angle it down hitting the ball first. The same line of thinking is used for hitting iron shots off the fairway. The club head “descends” into the back of the ball “squeezing” it against the ground and clubface. The ball is “compressed” and rolls up the face and grooves (creating friction) resulting in backspin. The ball then flies with greater speed due to the “compression”.

34

When using mid to short irons you must feel “centered” with your address position. Feel as though your left shoulder is slightly lower than normal. The spine should then feel more vertical placing your balance a touch more on your left foot (55%). Ball position remains opposite left ear.

In the backswing the body has to rotate around the center. Your head and upper body shouldn’t move away excessively. As a result the swing may even feel ¾ in length. If the body shifts too much to the right it will be difficult to impart a descending blow on the ball later instead you may hit fat or thin shots. Feel as though your left ear is still opposite the ball here (pictured)

In the downswing feel as though you are “descending” into the ball (as pictured). The hands lead the club head; you can feel as though the back of the right hand retains some angle. The image you should have is of an imaginary ball in front of your ball with which you want to strike as well. Your balance should be on your left side.

DRILL – For feedback place a tee peg 3cm s in front of your ball. Hit the” ball first “then remove the tee after. The result should be fizzed irons and divots in front of the ball. “ON COURSE” DRILL – When making practice swings make sure to strike the ground. This ensures that you are prepared to transfer that feel with your real shot.
