LAC LA BICHE MISSION

The Lac La Biche Mission was established in 1853, and it was an important landmark of the fur trade era and the pioneer age that followed. In its heyday, the Mission had pride of place in a vast transportation network that stretched across the Prairies and into the Northwest Territories. Take a guided or self-guided tour of this picturesque National Historic Site, complete with heritage buildings and exhibits, to glimpse life in the olden days. Dive into the history of the Lac La Biche Region, from the early years to modern times. Discover the people and events that shaped our community, meet the wildlife of the boreal forest, and take an up-close look at unique local treasures – like a giant 14-foot model ship – that have stories all their own. The museum’s archives are open to visitors who want to delve even deeper. Make new discoveries in 2020 with special events like Indigenous Storytelling and Textile Arts Demonstrations. PLAMONDON MUSEUM & MINI PARC HERITAGE PARK

The hamlet of Plamondon is one of the only places in Alberta that are officially recognized as bilingual, and residents are proud of their heritage. Plamondon’s francophone vibes, cultural mélange and homegrown fondness for the arts give the hamlet a special identity. The Plamondon Museum takes visitors back to the early 1900s, when French-speaking pioneers came to start new lives in Alberta. You can also visit the charming Mini Parc Heritage Park, and walk among miniature replicas of Plamondon’s very first buildings and homesteads. Indigenous peoples have inhabited this land for thousands of years, and Portage College takes pride in displaying authentic Indigenous art pieces. Tour the world’s only permanent collection of works by the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., and learn about centuriesold Aboriginal art forms from across Canada.
