Winter Escapades
In the Lac La Biche Region, winter is not a time to hunker down indoors. It’s a time to test your mettle, brave the elements, and be rewarded with incredible experiences.
ICE FISHING Ice fishing has an undeniable social aspect, as “villages” of fishing shelters appear on local lakes, and friends and families go looking for prize catches.
Visiting anglers can stay in fully equipped cabins on frozen Lac La Biche Lake, provided by Lakeland Expeditions Rentals. Book one for a night or a whole weekend of ice fishing in comfort.

WINTER FESTIVAL OF SPEED February 22-23 / Lac La Biche Lake near McArthur Park Imagine putting the pedal to the metal and speeding across the frozen surface of Lac La Biche Lake, drifting around corners and sending rooster-tails of snow flying into the air. This ice racing spectacle calls thrill-seekers with nerves of steel from across Western Canada to race cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles and more. You can even get behind the wheel yourself in a charity race, with proceeds going to support local causes.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING See the Events section for planned community skiing activities. Under a blanket of snow, the boreal forest falls silent. The only sound is the whisper of skis passing over powder. As you glide through a winter wonderland, lose yourself in the movement, and let the full-body exertion keep the chill at bay.
Head to Shaw Lake Day Use Area in Lakeland Provincial Park to access a network of groomed ski trails circling the lake and weaving through the woods.
TRAPPER PAUL AT WINEFRED LAKE OUTFITTERS 780-404-3213 / aulsher@hotmail.com / Northeast of Lac La Biche, southeast of Conklin Trapping is a livelihood as old as time, passed down in families from one generation to the next. Paul Padlesky (Trapper Paul to his friends) is a former fur trader who learned the art of trapping from his grandfather, and now he guides visitors through the experience at Winefred Lake Outfitters, imparting Métis teachings that emphasize respect for the land and appreciation for Mother Nature’s bounty. Dabble in a rugged way of life that’s slowly vanishing in other parts of the world but that lives on in these frozen wilds.

ON THE WILD SIDE
For the best chance of photographing the Northern Lights, use a tripod to hold your camera still and use a very slow shutter speed to capture as much light as possible. A one-minute exposure is a good starting point.
