Rich with her Brazilian origin and her training as an opera singer in Paris, Ila Herbert teaches music at La Clef Enchantée, an organisation which aims to educate children in the language of music, as well as to introduce them to the great classics. In this context, she has produced this eighth educational book. Thierry Cervoni, French screenwriter, has written this adaptation of Cinderella. Michela Burzo, Italian illustrator, was the winner of the book illustration competition, organised by La Clef Enchantée and the Delegation of Brazil to UNESCO. Lisou on her way to a land of the future Still moved by the Romeo and Juliet ballet tour, our little mouse Lisou flies over the ocean, holding on tight to her kite. Boom! She lands on the deck of a boat: a sailing ship, which left Europe in search of the New World. Lisou bangs her muzzle against that of a fat cat. - Hmm... You fell from the sky, little mouse! I am so hungry! A shrill voice makes him jump, and Lisou is saved: - Land ahoy! It’s the parrot Papagaio announcing that land has been spotted…... A paradise…... Brazil! In fact the boat is the float of a samba school which is preparing for the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro.

Cinderella
Papagaio takes Lisou away from the hubbub of the shanty town and places her by the window of a wealthy mansion. A young woman washes the windows and sings sadly. From dawn to dusk, Cinderella cleans the huge house and is taunted by Tonia and Javotina. They are the daughters of Cinderella’s stepmother. She lost her mother when she was still a child. Tonia and Javotina spend their time dolling themselves up, scheming, being greedy, and bickering. 4
The father and the stepmother Between two business trips, Cinderella’s father spreads the news: - On the third evening of the Carnival, our Prince Yellow-Green will choose the most beautiful dancer! Discreetly, he whispers to Cinderella: - Daughter, you shall soon have a big surprise... Tonia and Javotina quarrel over who will become the Queen of the Carnival. Suddenly, they scream with fear: - Over there! A MOUSE!!! It’s our little Lisou, who runs to hide under the rug. Hearing all the screams, the stepmother comes in. She treats Cinderella as a slave. She blames her for looking so much like her mother, who was so beautiful and kind.

Prince Yellow-Green
He dribbles the ball past the entire opposing team. What an artist! And scores a magnificent goal, giving victory to the Brazilian team!!! The people sing and dance the samba. Their Prince is indeed the worthy heir of King PelÊ! - GOOOOOOOOLAÇO! 9
The fairy godmother
The surprise announced by Cinderella’s father is a visit from her fairy godmother. With her magic wand: Abracadabra! The fairy godmother turns a pumpkin into a carriage, mice into horses, old rags into a sparkling costume. As for Cinderella’s bare feet, she gives them shoes, so magical, they take her to the dance.

- Listen, my darling! You must absolutely leave before midnight strikes, when your cortege will disappear, and your glittering costume will return to old rags. Dressed as a princess, her heart beating fast, Cinderella climbs onto the float with her entourage. 11
The parade
Saturday evening. The long avenue vibrates to sound of percussion. Thousands of spectators from all over the world give Prince Yellow-Green an enthusiastic ovation. But the Prince is bored: none of the dancers looks like the princess of his dreams... At eleven o’clock, a float appears with a star shining like the sun in the night. It’s our Cinderella. The Prince only has eyes for her. - My shining star! The public applauds as he invites her to dance. At the first stroke of midnight, Cinderella remembers her fairy godmother’s advice. She slips away into the crowd, but leaves behind one of her magic shoes. Poor Prince…... Will he be able to find her again? 12

Innocence and cruelty
The following day, from dawn, Cinderella has humbly returned to her life as a servant: duster, broom, detergent... But her heart beats fast. She sees herself in the arms of her Prince, and sings her secret. The stepmother yells: - Cinderella! You are always singing instead of working! Mind my anger! The headlines on the front pages of all the Brazilian newspapers read: WHO IS THE MISSING QUEEN? WE WANT OUR STAR BACK! Seeing the pictures in the newspapers, the stepmother recognises a face: - But... it’s Cinderella! Javotina, quickly burn these horrible papers! Tonia, switch off the TV and the computer! She must never know anything!

The Prince’s search
The Prince is baffled. On his official blog he has received thousands of messages from all over the world. All the suitors claim to be the missing queen. He decides to go and find out for himself. - Courage! Hope! Perseverance! This is my motto! That’s how I became the Prince! I will find her! Wherever she is! - Where did the first messages come from? - From Europe, Prince. - Zé, prepare our plane. We’re on our way to France! To find my star, I will need to cross the sky. 16
Beyond the ocean, and with special authorisation, the Prince and ZĂŠ land by helicopter in Paris, right by the side of Garnier Opera House.
- That’s my house! Lisou says proudly to Papagaio.

Paris The lead dancer interrupts the rehearsal of the ballet Cinderella and runs off to meet the Prince. She stretches her flexible foot to try on the magic shoe‌... In vain.

South Africa It’s Freedom Day, when the Rainbow Nation celebrates its liberty. In the midst of the joy of the township, the queen of kwaito music offers the Prince her beautiful arched foot. But‌... in spite of her efforts, her foot does not fit the shoe.
Papagaio carries in his beak a letter stamped with a picture of the Taj Mahal... in India.

Bollywood
Perfumed with fourteen kinds of Indian incenses, this letter has been sent by the Bollywood star Sing-Ingh Lalalah. Alas! The shoe does not fit her either.

This magic shoe does not want to be worn either by the languid Yasmina of Egypt, or by the ballerina of Bolshoi, or by the majorette of Chicago, or by the passionate gypsy from Seville...
Suddenly, Zé is electrified by the most spectacular idea of his life: - Prince... thinking about it now… I realise that we didn’t look for her... at home... - At home... in Brazil? Zé, you could have thought about that earlier!

Back in Rio de Janeiro, the Prince remembers the wise words his aunt Elza used to say when he was a child and not yet a famous football player:

On the beach of Ipanema, the Prince and ZÊ are attacked by two frantic girls: Tonia and Javotina, followed by their mother, and by our Cinderella. - If only I had known‌... You lazy thing! growls the stepmother. I would have locked you up in the house! Get under there! In spite of their best efforts, the shoe fits neither of the two sisters. As the Prince gets ready to leave, he sees Lisou and Papagaio lifting a beach skirt... showing the beautiful foot of a delightful young lady. Enchanted by her beauty, he kneels and sees how effortlessly the delicate foot slips into the magic shoe. Smiling as if in new found sunlight, the Prince embraces his beloved.

Cinderella in Brazil is the eighth educational book published by La Clef EnchantÊe, with the aim of encouraging children to discover classical music through selected masterpieces. After the Romeo and Juliet ballet tour, the little mouse Lisou leaves Europe and arrives in Brazil. She will discover the joy of the Carnival of Rio, and will meet Cinderella. Prince Charming is a famous football player, and to find his beloved again, he must travel the world. This book comes with a CD telling the tale of Cinderella, as written by Perrault. It also contains songs inspired by the main scenes of the story and some simplified scores of Prokofiev’s music. The very young will love colouring in a series of illustrations.
