ARTIST STATEMENT

I straddle many boundaries: between oil and ink painting, abstraction and decoration, vessels and sculpture, traditional styles and cutting-edge installations, image-making to language expressions, studies of world art history and traditional Chinese crafts. Conventionally, these boundaries are difficult to cross, because an artist can hardly have multiple identities. All these styles, media, ways of thinking and expressing, speak of a contemporary Chinese artist who reacts naturally to this time which is incredibly rich, diverse, and open. China indeed is changing very fast in this era, and we must adjust ourselves when facing fast-changing issues and challenges. There is a certain degree of unfamiliarity when working with different materials and trying different expressions. My fundamental attitude toward art creation is to deepen the understanding of the self and to give the audience a sense of unfamiliarity. The moment an artist faces a new medium is always a unique one, with its own feelings and settings. We don’t know what new desires, imaginations, and feelings one has at that moment. The most actual manifestation generated in that moment or space is most crucial to the creation of art. I am infatuated with experimenting with different media, to actually feel different expressions of different clays, papers, or paints. This is why even old works of mine still look refreshing today. I had never thought about subverting anything when I created these works. Everything in me is a continuation of tradition. That includes the way I feel, the way I look, the way I touch, and the way I understand the malleability of clay. Not in terms of form, though. In forms, there is nothing traditional about my art. My sculptures, installations, and vessels are all based upon aesthetics of serenity. This serenity is not pure quietness, but one that is full of life.
