In a dense neighborhood and close to a major traffic boulevard, this project is divided in two parts linked by a similar geometry and faรงade treatment. The project fits into the existing urbanism by following the heights and the profile of the buildings of the Tarentaize district in St-Etienne. The housing part contains so-called "inter-generational" apartments with living rooms and shared kitchens allowing encounters and life in community.

The project is structured with a structural grid of 5 / 5m which is respected in all the housing part and which is partially extended for the library. The whole project is built in a wood structure. Staircases are equipped with many services and are accessible only by the inhabitants. The ground floor is almost exclusively reserved for public activities and open to the life of the neighborhood. Buildings are separated by private green courtyards linking all the programs.

The layout of the apartments follows directly the structural grid. The apartments are composed of 5 / 5m squares. The flats are organized according to these squares of 25 m². A two-bedroom flat is three squares and a four-bedroom flat is five squares. The grid is structural and functional. Each stairwell gives access to a room reserved for residents with small apartments offering the use of a balcony and common areas for sharing and relaxation. The façade is treated with a clear way wood cladding allowing continuity of spaces, protection against noise and a barrier with the street. This cladding is also the second skin of the library, cutting the readers and users from direct light without closing the public space of the main courtyard.
The apartments are built around the green courtyard wich is partially covered and shaded by the external continuity of the wood beam structure and the grid. The interior of the apartments is very simple, arranged to separate the night time part from the daytime part. Each apartment has its own loggia overlooking at the courtyard. Each loggia is created in the flats in order to open completely the living room to the outside. Windows are divided in three parts respecting the principle of wood construction and creating very bright apartments and very few shadow areas despite some single-oriented apartments.

The project is located in a residential area of St-Etienne. The shape of the building follows the shape of the terrain. Two separated buildings create a playground for the kindergarden, away from the boulevard. The kindergarden entrance is close to the boulevard and to a square, leaving space for gardens and for the promenade. The rooms of the kindergarden are organized around an interior patio in the middle of the first building. The second building is located according to the profile of the surrounding buildings. It is organized in two large stairwells leading to covered walkways that can be used by residents as outdoor spaces. The project is calculated to have a garden of 16 m² for each flat on the accessible terraces and roofs. The interior of the apartments is composed thinking of the size of the living room to enjoy multiple openings.

St-Vallier, in DrĂ´me, has problems with its organization and its development. As many small towns, the old center is abandoned by businesses and by the inhabitants because of housing becoming too old and the creation of peri-urban commercial areas. The living spaces of the inhabitants tend to end up in the periphery with pavilions and commercial areas. Despite many services, the center is dying and the city has problems of extension and development because of old abandoned industrial areas and several places with non-used potential.
We first did an analysis of the landscape : the formation of this city and its territory. We found various problems and challenges. Then we made a 30 years urban planning for the city with a schedule. We decided to expand the city's influence and create specific activity centers to bring people closer and closer to the services of the center. Different areas are treated differently according to the pros and cons of each. The city of Sarras, on the other side of the Rhone is therefore directly involved. The other two areas are both north and south of the knot created by the center of St-Vallier, between river and mountains.

The different zone's development respect the deadlines in housing creation but also in the renovation of existing housing and the capacity of service establishments such as scolar buildings. Each zone has different problems, for instance : the non-use of the areas near the river or non-existent links between different neighborhoods. The creation of new housing areas favoring soft modes of transport is preferred. The docks offering various tourist and family activities are also treated by various programs. The city of St-Vallier opens itself on its territory and is no longer a simple transit city.
