For the past

121 years...

The La Crosse Symphony Orchestra has served the people, institutions and businesses of the greater La Crosse area by elevating its cultural climate. It does this in several ways:

• The LSO presents a Symphony for Youth concert day annually for area public and private school children in Grades 3-5. Each year over 2,000 children attend these concerts.

• In 2020, the LSO will host the 21st Annual Richard Record Rising Stars Concerto Competition. Four finalists will perform with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra during the March concert as they compete for cash prizes.

• The LSO awards 11 String Scholarships to area elementary, middle and high school students for lessons with LSO musicians. •

The LSO, in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse, School District of La Crosse, and La Crosse Area Youth Symphony Orchestra initiated Play It Forward-La Crosse, a community-wide used instrument drive. The LSO also collaborates with the Boys & Girls Club Fine Arts Music Program, for an after school instrumental music education program at both of the La Crosse Clubs. Donated instruments will give many students who cannot afford to pay for an instrument or private music lessons, the opportunity for instrumental music education.

The La Crosse Symphony Orchestra’s Maestro School Program seeks to musically educate and enlighten young people in the Coulee Region by sending its Music Director, Alexander Platt, into actual rehearsals of the high school and middle school bands and orchestras.

The Conductor Wannabe Competition collaborates with six candidates in choosing a non-profit organization that will receive half of the money they each raise during the campaign. Each “vote” is $2 – $1 going to the LSO and the other $1 going to the candidate’s chosen charity. The winner and runner-up with the most votes make their conducting debuts with the LSO at the June concert.

Dear Friends,

Following the sold-out successes of several evenings in our 2018-19 season, I welcome you to a new season to take us to 2020 with even more delights in store. From a rapturous opening night of Grieg and Tchaikovsky, to an evening celebrating an American genius, Howard Hanson, with our young friends from the La Crosse Area Youth Symphony; from our annual pair of Holiday concerts, this year with two of our city’s dance companies, reveling in the glory of old Vienna, to another of our annual rites, our exciting program celebrating the “Rising Stars” of our region in virtuoso concerto repertoire; and from (finally!) an evening celebrating the timeless romance of Frank Sinatra, to an equally epic event, our centenary observance of Wisconsin being the first state to pass the 19th Amendment, finally giving women the right to vote -- this 2019/20 season of the LSO brings you another bouquet of unique, incomparable musical events, the Driftless Region at its best. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of you -- our audience, sponsors, patrons and volunteers, who give so much to make the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra this glorious gem in our community: from your time, to your resources, to the love you send to us, “over the footlights”, as we bring you some of the greatest music ever written in live performance. It is thus with immense gratitude and pleasure that I dedicate this season to all of you, and thank you, as ever, for your support. Sincerely

Alexander Platt

Baltic Journeys

October 19, 2019, 7:30 pm | Guest Artist: Andrew von Oeyen, piano Viterbo Fine Arts Center • 929 Jackson St, La Crosse, WI 54601

Jean Sibelius: “Spring Song,” Op. 16 Edvard Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16

INTERMISSION

Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 3 in D Major, Op. 29 (Polish) An elegant evening of symphonic masterpieces from Northern Europe in the Romantic era -- a Driftless version of a program you’d hear at the Milwaukee Symphony or the Minnesota Orchestra, performed right here with the passion, precision and panache you’ve come to expect from the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra in recent years. Sibelius’ “Spring Song” evokes the magic of a Finnish forest, while the Norwegian Edvard Grieg left us one of the most beloved works for piano and orchestra in the entire repertoire -- here played by the glamorous young pianist Andrew van Oeyen, already a veteran soloist with several major American orchestras. Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony, nicknamed the Polish on account of its folk-like Baltic rhythms, caps what will be a magnificent evening by any standard, the perfect introduction to the grandeur of orchestral sound for newcomers and connoisseurs alike. Thank you to our Concert Sponsors:

arr.Bob Lowden: Armed Forces Salute Howard Hanson: Symphony No. 2 in D-flat Major, Op. 30 (Romantic)

Join us as we celebrate our great Midwestern classical music traditions in performing not one, but both of the most

famous symphonies by the ultimate “Prairie Romantic”, Howard Hanson -- born of Swedish immigrants in Nebraska in 1896 and who rose to be a favorite composer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. There’s nothing quite like Hanson’s “Nordic” and “Romantic” Symphonies, both written in the 1920’s and which take as their inspiration Antonin Dvorak, composer of the “New World” Symphony, whose Violin Concerto in A minor will serve as the centerpiece of the evening. Another brilliant young musician making his LSO debut, the Russian-American violinist Igor Pikayzen will amaze and delight. Joining us in the “Romantic” Symphony will be the musicians of the La Crosse Area Youth Symphony, playing with the LSO side-by-side to create a thrilling sound. Thank you to our Concert Sponsor:

beloved dance companies to create the ultimate Holiday event -- our own version of the legendary New Year’s Day Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and the dancers of the Vienna State Opera. The night’s first half will combine favorite American Holiday fare with the Coulee Region’s own Bobby Levinger, former laureate of our LSO “Rising Stars”, in a glittering concerto from the Russian late-Romantic repertoire. And then, our dancers will take the stage to join the LSO in conjuring the magic of the waltzes of the Johann Strauss family, ending in “The Blue Danube”. In another great LSO tradition that brings the generations together, we combine “the final four” of our annual “Rising Stars” competition -- brilliant young performers, competing for top prizes in real time -- with the kick-off for what will be a year’s worth of musical celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven! Those four opening notes of “Beethoven Five” are the most recognizable he ever wrote, culminating in a finale of triumph and majesty. This immortal Symphony, following our celebration of young talent, will once again bring our community together in an evening with something for everyone. Thank you to our Concert Sponsor:

And of course, the LSO will host its longoverdue celebration with only the best -- Steve Lippia, who has sung “the Sinatra Songbook” with The Boston Pops, The Cincinnati Pops, and countless other American orchestras. And backing up Mr Lippia will be no “pit-band”, but the full elegance of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, performing top-drawer, custom orchestrations of Sinatra’s timeless songs. INTERMISSION

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade

Wes Luke, soloist

In June 1919, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote -- the culmination of a national movement that actually began in Wisconsin in the 1840’s and reaching its climax at the 1916 Republican National Convention, at which Wisconsin women drew the attention of the world. And in the summer of 1920, the 19th Amendment became law, in one of the very greatest moments of Wisconsin’s progressive heritage. We celebrate this occasion in international style, with the works of no less than three great women composers through the ages -- not to mention our equally world-class soloist, the brilliant American pianist Lucille Chung. And the evening will culminate in one of the great symphonic showpieces of the 19th century, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade -- with its amazing soundscape of a courageous, creative woman, triumphing against all odds.
