leftover space (the virtue of ignorance) spring 2012 critic:

kristy balliet

the first phase of this studio focused on the creation of a bah relief model; that which occupies 2.5 dimensions. it is simultaneously flat and hyper dimensional. my model drew inspiration from the painting “moon axel, and attempts to capture an object in four dimensional space. the second phase uses techniques from the construction of the bah relief model to create a gateway. the gateway is both expressive and functional; it operates as a sculptural object carving a distinct skyline, while moving people through its congruent/incongruent interior. in the design of my gateway, I focused on creating an object which is constantly redefining its profile and understanding as its users pass through and around it.

bubblescast re-analyzes a small chunk of the knowlton school of architecture’s south facade. its existing storefront glass fenestration is replaced with a curtain wall of seven pre-cast concrete panels. a series of polystyrene playground bubbles are cast into the panels at the third floor, responding to habitual behavior developed by the students occupying the space, providing them with areas of relaxation and recluse. To prevent overheating, an extra layer of carbon fiber mesh is stretched over the exterior of the wall, providing shade to the bubbles’ interior.

figured block berlin unlimited competition submission designer : team:

kristy balliet samuel fudala justin gurtz

this project champions the inner block, the outdoor rooms of berlin. the proposal restructures an urban block to reimagine the volumes of the collective city. the outdoor room extends the explicitly defined volumes of architecture, most often contained within buildings, to the exterior urban realm. capitalizing on the spatial ambiguity of the between -- between inside and outside, between one space and another, between one room and the next -- the outdoor room redefines the volumes of architecture through this exterior extension by including the interstitial zones of interior courts, porticos, plazas as designed space. the figured block challenges the notion that an expanding metropolis must either extend its borders or completely infill, and rather advances the innovation of the in between. the outdoor room implies the presence of an adjacent architecture without prioritizing it. this proposal actively participates in the oscillation of the figure ground as it adds value to the figure in between.*

a1 : PET STOOL. a construction project exploring the challenges of rigid formwork and fluid casting agent. the task: challenge ourselves to create a dynamic compositional object using only paper based formwork. the result: an octopus like microlith with four steel rebar legs surrounded by a family of re-arrangable cylinders.

a2 : MEATS N’ CHEESES. a collaboration with two friends/classmates. the result of our collective participation in the michael young led “object estrangement” workshop.

a3-a5 : TUMBLUUR. a series of drawings
