LADY OF THE MONTH
INSIDE A CATERER’S WORLD Oluwatoyin Oyeniran's journey
Deciding on a culinary business may seem exciting until you go through social media networks like Instagram and realise how saturated it is. So how do you distinguish yourself? In an exclusive interview with LADIES IN BUSINESS MAGAZINE, Oluwatoyin Oyeniran, a successful caterer shares her journey and gives tips to startups. BY MOVORIA DEBORAH “Dreams are ever in existence, some may never see the light of day, but if you are passionate, you will be resilient”, Oluwatoyin Oyeniran said as she sipped tea from the teacup branded by the bank she had worked with for about twelve years. Adorned in a navy blue skirt, paired with a peach-colored blouse, her four children sat at a corner probably wondering why there was a camera in their living room. Signalling her readiness for the interview with an “Ahem", we got talking. From Owo in Owo local government area of Ondo state, Nigeria's South-West region, Toyin, a Yoruba woman rooted in Christian doctrine invites us into her world as a Customer Service Manager and CEO of a successful catering outfit. “We are all in the service industry, just depends on how you see it”,

LADY OF THE MONTH
“I was raised with the belief that women can attain financial self-reliance” she said. “At the end of the day it is about attending to the needs of your clients whether as a banker or caterer”, when asked what the similarities are between banking and catering. Toyin is a knowledge seeker who is not weary of constructive criticism as regards her craft. Her quest for knowledge led her to Ibadan state polytechnic where she got her Higher National Diploma in Business Administration. “To under promise and over deliver”, Toyin says is her guiding principle. The second of three children, Toyin took us back to what life was like growing up as a child with her parents. “My father was a very strict and disciplined man, so we were raised under strict conditions”, she emphasised. Her father, a civil servant turned Cocoa trader came into wealth and affluence after he left his white collar job for the uncertain world of entrepreneurship. He not only created wealth for himself but also provided a means of livelihood for a considerable number of people, mostly his employees. Her mother on the other hand, was a distributor of the rich Nigerian palm oil. Having been exposed to entrepreneurship at a tender age, it's no surprise that Toyin would take a similar route with the birth of TAM UNIQUE CUISINE. TAM UNIQUE CUISINE Toyin's mother was her window to the world of business, her initial tutelage came from supporting her mom in running her palm oil business. “I was raised with the belief that women can attain financial self-reliance”, she adds, “I saw my mother work hard to attain this and not leave the financial burden of raising a family to my father”. In her opinion, this experience became a weathercock directing Toyin towards “Financial liberation and sustainability as a woman”. This may have been one of her reasons for spreading her tentacles beyond the corporate world.

LADY OF THE MONTH
2016 was a big decisive year for Toyin. She had always hungered for the coat of an employer, but she wasn't exactly sure of the direction to take. Ideas came in numbers, leaving her in an almost confused state. Toyin says one can never be short of ideas rather one scan be short on the means of execution. “This is the point at which the phrase think outside the box comes to play”. “I decided to monetize my passion”, she noted. She always had the knack for catering.
business. August 2016, her business kicked off after finalizing the registration process with Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission. With an initial capital of 450,000 naira of her personal savings and five employees, Toyin established TAM UNIQUE CUISINE (TUC); a catering service which promises a professional yet homely experience, thus the slogan 'creating memorable events with a touch of glamour and class'.
At work, she was the go-to person for event coordination. Similarly, her friends came to her whenever they had birthday parties or other celebratory gatherings to organize. She decided to turn this gift into a profitable
Barely two years after its commencement, TUC, boasts of notable events in its portfolio like the 60th anniversary of the University College Hospital Ibadan, Weddings and corporate meetings and with a 22 member- staff on its payroll, TUC is currently worth over ten million naira. Its clientele cuts across affluent, average and low-income Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora. Corporate entities were not left out. Like most beginnings, Toyin admits the air of uncertainty hovered around her thoughts. “We are never sure of tomorrow, but we can be certain of the efforts we put in our work, so I told myself relax, take it one day at a time, do your best, improve in areas that need improvement and let God handle the rest”
“It's okay to start small and grow at your own pace”

SCALING CHALLENGES Its common knowledge that funding is indispensable for any business to thrive. Funding is a mutual challeng e for most entrepreneurs, especially at the early stage of business. Common sources of funds include; personal savings, loans, and donations from friends and family. For Toyin, a loan was not an option due to the high-interest rate which she described as “unhealthy for a new business”. On July 26th, 2016, Nigeria's monetary policy committee led by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin I. Emefiele, increased the MPR by 200 basis points from 12 percent to 14 percent. This would mean that the lowest interest rate at which consumers can obtain a loan from the bank is 14 percent. An additional cost Toyin wasn't willing to incur. “It is important to save no matter how small it may be” Toyin advised. Her savings ser ved as capital while she employed the bootstrapping tactics to further sustain the business. “Bootstrapping became my financial strategy for capital generation”. Bootstrap simply means starting your business without venture capital or funds from investors. It also means to reinvest a certain quota of your business revenue or profit into the same business. It g radually enlarges your business capital base and makes the entrepreneur careful, accountable and focused on the business.
Besides funding, the hassle of running family, business and Job cannot be overplayed. Toyin agrees, “Merging family, career and business is tasking, but God has been my strength”. Toyin sees every concluded event as a victory and a step towards her company's next phase. Some have come at the expense of quality time with her family. She has had to travel long distance for events or cater to evening events like corporate dinners but her “husband has been her strength” she said while expressing gratitude for his unending support. He manages the home in her absence and is also her first point of call for feedback on her new recipes. Nurturing her new enterprise has left Toyin with little time to herself including days when her health is not at its best. She shared one of such days with us. “I was in a poor state of health and was asked to be admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, I had an important event that required my utmost presence. I braved my way to Abeokuta the capital of Ogun state in Western Nigeria to cater at the event. Arriving at 1am, My team and I had no time to rest as the event was scheduled for 8am. We toiled in the cold to meet our deadline. One thought kept me going; to make that event a memorable one for my client”. Toyin has continuously depicted that such zeal and attitude towards work is a physical manifestation of passion for what you do.
“A satisfied client will most often refer you”

Toyin suggests a j o b we l l - d o n e leaves guest h a p p i l y conversing about the “food than the bride's dress”.
“It is important to study the barebones of running a business” BUSINESS OF CATERING For Toyin, the catering business is not limited to food preparation. “It is a service designed to lift burden off your client so attention can be paid to other areas of the event. There are times when caterers handle drinks, provide Ushers, Ser vicers and Bouncers for an event. You may also be involved in the event organisation from the onset”, she says. Every client comes with a different budget. There may be times where the quality of a caterer's service may be in jeopardy if funds provided by clients do not commensurate with the client's demand. Toyin partially ag rees. She believes it is the responsibility of a caterer to provide clients with the best service in line with available funds earmarked for an event. She says “It is the true test of your creative prowess”. She further highlights the ‘musthaves.’ A caterer must be a “Good listener, Negotiator, Communicator, People Manager, Good planner, Must be neat,
“Bootstrapping became my financial strategy for capital generation”
Toyin also advised catering start-ups to; “Draw up a detailed business plan before you set out.
“There is nothing more striking than a caterer who delivers her job on time, coupled with quality service” Review your plan and ensure it tows the line of your set goals and objectives. Remember there is a thin line between goals and objectives, so clearly state them in your plan. Your plan is incomplete without a SWOT analysis. Identify your area of expertise; do you want to focus on local or continental dishes? Do you wa n t t o p r ov i d e d e l i c a c i e s distinctive to other African countries? If yes, do you have access to the unique ingredients for those delicacies? Would the cost of acquiring these items drastically inflate the cost o f y o u r services?” she says all t h e s e questions should be answere d b y intendi

ng caterers. “It's okay to start small and grow at your own pace”, Toyin maintains. Practice with a small gathering of friends, observe and request for feedback. Develop your unique recipe(s) or improve on an existing one. Either way, your meals should contain your unique signature”. Toyin reiterates, “It makes you worth remembering”. “Be honest, transparent, focussed and dedicated to the job. You must be energetic, creative and capable of managing resources”. When it comes to recruiting new clients, Toyin believes you can grow your clientele from existing ones. “A satisfied client will most often refer you”. She strives to 'wow' clients with unforgettable services. “Ensure you love what you do and not because others have been

successful doing it. Be patient in dealings with clients”, she emphasises. Toyin is of the view that the number of guests for an event should not deter quality service, but rather become an opportunity to showcase an understanding of the business. She counsels new caterers, “Always bear in mind you are catering to various persons, from different socio-cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds, all of which must be put into consideration when deciding on the menu with the client”. “There is nothing more striking than a caterer who delivers her job on time, coupled with quality service”. Aim first for a good brand name and profit will naturally follow. A highly competitive industry like this needs you to take every job like it's your first, understand your client and never be too tired to go over every detail with your client”. Finally, Toyin summarises as we drew the curtain on the interview; “It is important to study the barebones of running a business. It's one thing to be a good caterer; it's another thing to be a good business manager. You will need both”. Toyin's MBA from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria helped her in this regard. She coaches young women leaning towards catering business and hopes to inspire more through this interview just as she was inspired by “Sisi pepper consult”. develop to an established standard and quality. As a good boss, your responsibilities should not be left for others to do on your behalf, this is because you are suppose to be the vision/mission of the kind of operations that goes around your business. Ensure that you carry out your duties as expected. I have seen several cases where some bosses will not even show up in their ofďŹ ces for weeks and the business will gradually collapse. Take up your own business today by taking up responsibilities accordingly in a more organised way rather than letting your emploees do that. Allowing employees to take charge of your business is a dangerous loop hole that will breakdown the business at last. In conclusion, I will encourage us to begin to take charge of our business because the way and manner at which we operate our businesses will surely justify the end result of our proďŹ t.

FASHION AND LIFESTYLE
Fashion& Lifestyle ACCESSORISING 17
FASHION AND LIFESTYLE
Fashion & Lifestyles My name is Omobolanle Bells Akinyemi. I am a businesswoman who trades in perfumes, guineabrocades, jalamias and gold jewelries. I am a supervisor with SOAB clearing and forwarding agency, Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria. I am also a brand influencer and a fashion consultant to a couple of boutique owners. I'll be anchoring the fashion and style section of LADIESINBUSINESS MAGAZINE, i will make the journey worth your while by God's special grace.
WAYS OF ACCESSORISING Before we go further, i would like to quickly remind us all that a smile is the number one and best accessory you can wear and it makes you look really good. NECKPIECE: Accessorising an outfit with a neckpiece is the most sophisticated way to make the outfit pop, however, you must be willing to experiment with your neckpiece and go with bold, chunky designs.
For the first edition of LADIESINBUSINESS MAGAZINE fashion and style, I'll be talking about ACCESSORISING; it is how you get an outfit from flat, boring and simple to classy and fabulous in a snap of a finger. However, there are principles to be followed to accessorize appropriately in order to avoid looking like a load of trash.....
BAGS/PURSES: No outfit is complete without this. I tell ladies all the time to get a very durable earthly tone bag that can go with virtually anything and make it their everyday bag. You don't have to break the bank to accessorize or look good. One or two nice bag(s) is absolutely fine. SUNGLASSES: This is my favourite way of accessorising an outfit. You can choose to accessorize that outfit with just a sunglasses be it dark or transparent and you are good to go. Be bold, get big and odd shaped sunglasses, the bigger, the fun plus it helps block out the rays of the sun. N.B. Be sure to pick sunnies that fit well with your face shape please. BRACELETS/RINGS: A beautiful cocktail ring or a fancy bracelet/bangle is a yes for that evening outting with the girls or with bae. Bear in mind though that it is better to do without bracelets/bangles when you have a cocktail ring and vice versa, you don't want to draw away
18
FASHION AND LIFESTYLE
attention from the ring or the bracelets/bangles. HATS/SCARVES/HEADBAND: Accessorize with a classy hat, a headband, or a scarf neatly tied with that outfit to give you the extra amazing look. N.B. Pick versatile colours you feel most comfortable with and pair with that denim and tee, the little short dress, a playsuit, jumpsuit and even maxi dresses and you ready to hit the road. BELTS: There is no accessorising without a beautiful leather or chain belt. The leather and chain belts comes in different designs, colours and sizes. When picking a belt, pick colours that match the bags you rock most of the time and pair together always. If you don't have at least two belts as a classy lady then I dnt know what you have as a classy lady, lool!
RULES OF ACCESSORISING BOLD AND CONFIDENT: An important rule of accessorising is to be bold and self-confident. Be ready to experiment and show off always. DON'T OVERDO IT: Accessorising can be trickish, less is key when accessorising. Do not make the mistake of using too much accessories at a time, focus on a particular spot and accessorize...take note of this always. GO FOR NEUTRAL/NUDE SHADES: Go for earthly tones or contrast colours when picking your accessories as these colours blend well with any colour worn with, we don't want colour overload on us when accessorising. Let's all enjoy the rest of the month and remember to be classy always♥ IG: @bolaspiff

HEALTH AND LIVING WELL
Health & Living Well THE SILENT KILLER IN YOUR KITCHEN CABINET Mono-Sodium Glutamate popularly called MSG is a salt that is chemically converted into a flavour enhancer. MSG is found in all stock cubes and virtually all processed foods we find on the shelves of our supermarkets/stores/shopping mall. MSG is a food additive that supercharges the taste of food, but not in the way you would think. MSG operates on the brain, fooling it into thinking food tastes really great. MSG is an excito-toxin in the brain, meaning that it over stimulates the brain causing the production of excessive amounts of dopamine. This creates a drug-like rush that provides a brief sensation of well-being. It is highly addictive, causing its consumers to keep coming back for more and end up overeating. In the process, brain cells are destroyed. MSG causes weight gain and obesity by damaging the appetite regulation center in the area of the brain known as the hypothalamus, causing leptin resistance. Leptin is the hormone that controls how much a person feels like eating. The fullness, gratification and satisfaction that come from having eaten is completely lost when MSG is

consumed, leading to an urge to eat that never stops. The effects of MSG are cumulative. Just because you don't react to MSG now, doesn't mean you won't later. In fact the effect is seen much later in life than in the immediate and unfortunately things may have gone bad. That's because MSG overstimulates our nervous system — exciting our nerves and causing an inflammatory response. With time, these repetitive inflammatory responses cause our nerves to start producing more and more nerve cells that are sensitive to this kind of stimulation. The more overly-sensitive nerve cells we have, the stronger our immediate response to MSG will be. This is why MSG is called an "EXCITOTOXIN which literally means toxins that excite body cells especially brain cells to death. Little wonder practically all ailments are MSG related. Have you ever wondered why doctors tell hypertensive patients to stay clear of using stock cubes in their meals and also reduce their salt intake? It is because MSG increases blood pressure. Of course, because MSG doesn't have immediate effect on the body, we by default

wouldn't think that it is a major cause of increased blood pressure in the body. Apart from the fact that it is not a traditional food and that many people are sensitive to it, MSG interrupts the hormonal and biological development of the h u m a n b o d y. M S G a r e hor mone and endocrine disruptors. Do you know that MSG lurks in over 40 FDA a p p r ove d i n g r e d i e n t s ? A number of studies have found that the effects of MSG can occur cumulatively over time with subsequent exposure.

can make a choice to feed it with highly intelligent foods that will very rapidly raise its level of intelligence at an energetic and cellular level.
When you put diesel into a car that uses petrol, it will damage the car whether you like it or not. Your regular stock cubes contain MSG and other harmful substance that are dangerous to your health and over all well-being in the long run cause obesity, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol levels just to mention a few.

MSG is just one of the many foods and food additives that dumb the body down, rendering it somewhat “stupid”. The good news is that it's a choice. You can choose to dumb your body down, and you

MARRIED AND SINGLES
MARRIED &
Singles need to learn that the fact that you are a boss in your business doesn't make you become the boss to your spouse. As long as you feel superior to your partner, you won't resolve problems together.
The support of your spouse to your business will go a long way and bring peace to you as an individual. A lady in business that is skillful in what she does means she also has the capacity to run a good relationship or marriage. To keep an attitude of superiority from becoming a block in your relationship as a lady in business or marriage, I encourage you to learn to walk humbly with God and with your spouse. You will find it much easier to serve your spouse when you realize God is the One who is superior—not you.
A good relationship heading towards a good marriage should comprise of two individuals who are ready to submit to one another in reverence to Christ.
There are several advantages to staying humble to your spouse as a lady in business.
Ephesians 5:21 gave a proper definition of a good relationship “being subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Every lady in business should note this key for a successful business.
1.You enjoy extreme support. 2.You stay focus with peace of mind. 3.You become more productive because you have less issues to deal with.
If one person in the relationship becomes the dictator (or boss), the relationship will head toward destruction and for a lady in business whether single or married. We

MARRIED AND SINGLES
Note-If you need to work on any of these attitudes before going into marriage please do because it will go along way and help you in enjoying your marriage to the fullest and if you are married it is never too late to start living a new life. Marriage is meant to be enjoyed and not endured but most of the work is in our hands and how we respond to things. There is no successful marriage without the input of the individuals in it. If you can run a successful business, you can also have a successful relationship and marriage. One of the best things every lady in business can do is to have a happy home and also run an excellent business for her generation. In conclusion: The proverbs 31 woman I love so much and would like to point out some great qualities that made her stand out not only in her home but also in her business; Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. Proverbs 31:10-12 NKJV.
4.You become someone's pride. Nothing beats the joy of having a man who is proud of what you are doing as a lady in business.
My name is Titi Ogunleye and I help women build successful relationship before and in marriage. The aim is to help you build an authentic and God centered relationship and marriage with a stable emotion.
5.Emotionally, you are stable. Again, it is also important to stay completely out of any attack mode if truly you want to submit to your spouse and also run a successful business. Nothing will inflame conflict like attacking your partner rather calmly listen to his advise, it can be a saving grace one day if not for that particular time. Attacking appears in the forms of blaming, shaming, yelling, bringing up the past—all of these will trigger defensiveness, fear of disapproval, and feelings of rejection. All of these when allowed to come in, create a space between you and your man. The moment the attacking begins is the moment healthy communication stops. As you move toward marriage for the singles, it's important to learn that some actions just never work—this is one of them. And if care is not taken and you move into marriage with these signals there's every possibility that the marriage will have serious issues and this may affect your business, and for the married lady in business working on your communication line with your spouse boosts your success.
