INTRODUCTION

Ladies In Business Magazine Global – is the new face for the new generation of magazine publications that showcase and feature both ladies and women in business Globally. This magazine is a female based publication. It is meant to bring out and promote all unsung heroes, philanthropists, and the unknown faces of female entrepreneurs Globally, to talk about their struggles and success stories.

Before , women were not found in the fore of their business operations and the business corporate world due to various challenges they encounter as a woman.They have not been able to put their lives and businesses together due to several reasons. And this has brought about many conflicts in terms of if women can achieve success or not. But truthfully, a woman can achieve it all but not at the shame. It will all come through at one stage/ phase or the other.

Therefore, the focus of this magazine is on the totality of how women can still make things happen for themselves while they achieve their dreams. But in recent years, things have drastically changed to a greater level that every lady or woman out there have actual derive themselves into a state of excellent performance to do one business or the other through Self-Motivation, SelfActualization and Self-Devotion.

Nevertheless, much more are still in place to be done because the young entrepreneurs and business starters are still not able to find their feet in the midst of trying to balance between whom they are, what kind of business to do, what their business portray, what other ladies in business are doing, whom to emulate, how to cope as a lady in business, how to cope under pressure, how to generate more profits and how to meet up in all aspects of their lives. When it comes to leadership many woman have begun to self-challenge , taking hold of the bull by its horns not only for personal goals but that of the collective good of the women folk . Katie Mohamed, is one of such - a connector, Storyteller, Entrepreneur, philanthropist and a lot more.

The founder, Brandfusion , a Marketing and communications agency and Wsuite, a movement that drives gender agenda and advocacy towards shifting the balance is on a mission to break unconscious biases .

Living in the era of the empowered woman she catalogues her purpose driven nature, entrepreneurial and social life, the moments of grit and gut when LINBIZ GLOBAL caught up with her

You have many titles to your name such as Storyteller, Entrepreneur, philanthropist, connector ... Can we meet the woman behind all of that ?

I come from a village in the province of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. My dreams have always been bigger . Coming from an improvised neighbourhood, my goal was to leave to chase

these dreams. I was born into a Muslim family with very a strict religious parents. I was named “Khadija” which means born before her time. I believe in my core that my papa had a visionary reason for naming me this. He wanted me to live beyond my obstacles and think ahead of my time. I studied Fashion Design and soon learnt I had zero patience for that , I just wanted to be as stylish as I could be. So my next passion was Marketing. Coming from an apartheid era, these positions were limited to predominantly blue eyed, blonde hair women. They made being in this sector so glamourous and attractive. I wanted to be in that space of excitement. I was fortunate that I received great opportunities ( especially as a women of colour) during the late 1990’s. I eventually got into media and broadcasting for nearly two decades and that last decade has been the most fruitful and transformational for myself when I embarked on the entrepreneurship journey. It has been full of risk and reward. I currently am the founder and shareholder of a Marketing and Communication agency , called Brandfusion, an integrated business hub founded on the core principles of collaborative intelligence.

One of your motivational quotes says “ your purpose is your story”. Do share with us the story behind Wsuite.

Brene Brown profoundly says “ When we deny our stories, they define us, when we own our own stories, we get to write a brave new ending” .What we want and what we need are not the same. Part of defining your story is being able to differentiate your wants from your needs. That way you area able to focus and direct your efforts appropriately. This has really stood out for me, and when I was at an investment summit in 2018, I noticed that representation of women in the room and felt that as an agent of change, I have to continue to play an instrumental role in transforming mentoring and impact, creating networks of collaboration, connectivity and communication. As the founder of W-Suite , a movement that aims to spark conversation, advocacy and action towards shifting the balance , and to make more room for women at tables, by driving the acceleration of the gender agenda and co-create a culture, driving

meaningful participation of women in development of thriving communities, creating strong economies and great nations. Sometimes what we write doesn’t make it to the final edit of our lives, but that doesn’t mean it was not there, it doesn’t mean we didn’t think it. So ask yourself: How do I choose to redefine my story? Remember that you are not like most girls, you are your own story and your purpose is your story.

The annual Wsuite Summit’s theme for this year is “ The era of the empowered woman” , What is to be expected from women who are already seated successfully at a table?

Women have continued to leave lasting legacies of transformation and inspiration. We have overcome societal and gender platitudes, redefined our historical context and created what is producing more and more high achieving women. We often tend to conflate empowerment with financial success, influence and breaking the glass ceiling and overcoming the hurdles of a systemic patriarchal paradigm. We tend to forget about contentment, self-care and happiness. Our identities are compromised by the expectation that we have to hold up half of the sky with arguably half of the resources of our male counterparts. It can be overwhelming, in our quest for perfection. Our daily strive for personal empowerment comes with incredible mental challenges. We need to start to set boundaries. Boundaries put us in the drivers seat. We need agency, authenticity and connection. Empowered women create empowered societies, but empowerment can only flourish within a well-intentional life. One of significance , value and purpose. We are currently in the era of the empowered women, these are the very women that assume leading positions in society. These are the women whose attitudes , experiences and principles are shaping our world.

Tell us how you were able to surmount challenges through your corporate journey?

My challenges have been both internally and externally. My earliest challenges I faced was to be able to become self-aware and understand my personal habits. I needed to become adaptive and reflect on my flaws. I needed to understand that as much as I can be so motivated I will have to learn to accept failures as well. In order to be effective , I would have to take my emotions out , step out of my comfort zone and be a great ambassador for my brand. Ask for help and support. This is one of the most empowered feeling.

You copped the HERA awards recently how ways that win for what you represent?

It is always humbling to be recognised for the impact you create. It gives me validation, confidence and instil perseverance. It provides credibility to moral. It forced me to reflect on why I do what I do, my achievements . To receive recognition makes you figure out what you do so well. It is also a moment of gratitude on life. An award won’t change the world, but it recognises the devotion and the reward for what your purpose of work is about , an opportunity to keep increasing impact. When you reach out and believe that you are not alone. Reach out! Put aside your fears and take risks. Engage in regular activities , conference, networking , podcasts and just keeping abreast of currency. Identify initiatives that are aligned with your overall business goals, have significant impact and have good financial value. That is a winner! Once you establish presence and earn recognition, you attain a sustainable business.

You strongly advocate that women be heard, be seen and have a seat at the table ,how is your foundation holding out so far on this purpose?

In order for us to forge ahead together in solidarity, we have created platforms that engage, inspire and accelerate the gender agenda. We are driving meaningful and relevant conversations and witness how this collective movement bring together likeminded women, equally supported by our male allies. We have witnessed the shift. The constant feedback we receive on how our platforms have impacted individuals both personally and professional, has been nothing short of humbling. These networks offer access, exercise self-awareness , impact lives and hopefully lead to sustainable and self-reliance. Through our curated content we enable women to reach their full potential and achieve their personal best by identifying the challenges they face.

Have you had moments of self-doubt in the past or even sometimes now and how do you handle it?

This is the “imposter syndrome” that creeps in. But I have learnt that the imposter syndrome is associated with high achievers. I have to remind myself to stop being so hard on myself. I sometimes am my hardest critic. I try to not compare myself and have become so mindful of my thoughts. Once you also spend time with people that are supportive and in solidarity with you , it feels empowering. Practising self-compassion

and remembering how far I have come , obstacles

I have faced and opportunities that have come my way, re-enforces my validation. One of my worst personal challenges is over-thinking situations. I find myself overcome with fear and self-doubt. Taking a step back, reflecting on the situations helps me soberly see my current limitations . I have to whisper streams of encouraging sentences to myself to get through these situations.

What does the term ‘successful woman’, mean to you?

Success for me is subjective, it means always doing my best in every aspect of my life. Doing things that make me happy and content, pursuing and achieving my goals and personal target. Success has never been a once size fits all, it has been about beneficial accomplishment. In today’s times we are inclined to think that success is about being wealthy, popular or famous. Yes, worldly pursuit should not be frowned upon. But this success is transient. Ultimate success is a long and continuous road , it is attitude, intention and ability to have “Tawakkal” Trust in God. It is about spiritual strength, effort and essential ingredient is about wholeness and servitude.

Championing the course of Empowering women and advocating for a thriving community of women leaders, how has this impacted you personally?

I feel a great sensation of “helpers high”. When you provide tangible motivation, inspiration and assistance, it generates a feeling of gratitude and satisfaction. Research shows that we tend to act unselfishly when we watch others do the same. It is like going into a perfume store, you can’t leave there without getting some on you. I have created a sense of belonging . I do not feel isolated, keeping things in perspective that we are not meant to be in this world on our own. We have a purpose , and the more you do for others , you’re actually doing more for yourself. It gives me incandescent joy knowing that I am a change agent for a part of the story of the world. I view the world so differently through my causes, and the rewards far outweigh any acknowledgements here on earth. It is for the greater good, I find solace and comfort knowing that it is an act of piety. “The best among you are those who bring the greatest benefits to many others” Prophet Muhammad PBUP.

You always turn up elegant and bright. Could you describe your sense of style?

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved style! Fashion design became close to my heart as I wanted to curate special pieces . My personal style and the way I put my outfit together , I tend to go for edgy ensembles, accessories that stand out. I love pieces that tell a story. I can call myself fashion forward as I cannot be restricted or restrained by the seasons constant changes. As I get older I am going for the more elegant and stylish type of look. For me fashion is art, so I can say high glam and edgy. I do gravitate towards anything that is visually impactful!

In the next few years what bias are you looking to break further ?

There are so many biases that I would like to break. Ageism , people need to break free of this discrimination. That if we are older we lack skills, we are washed out and change the socially construct thinking of age. Beauty standards,: that we should be influenced by society standards of what women should look like. Influencers – most of them are not making impact , just impingement. Strong women of colour ; we are tired of this trap of we need to be strong for everyone around us. Identify all our unconscious biases and make an effort to unlearn things.

Technology continues to evolve, how should it be maximized to achieve results by the aspiring woman?

We will all be left behind if we’re not not streamlining our lives technologically. In order for us to stay ahead, maximise productivity we need to adapt to the evolving 4IR . It has made our lives , easier, faster and allows us to stay in contact with the world regardless of where you are. Over the years technology has revolutionised our world and daily lives and has created amazing tools and resources, putting useful information at our fingertips. It has paved the way for multifunctional devices and has not only made our lives faster but more fun.

What factors would you say shaped you into the person you have become ?

As we speak it has been GRIT and GUT undoubtedly. My past experiences have contributed to my identity formation and shaped my self -concept and self -motivation. For me, understanding my identity , what I believe to be true about myself at the deepest core. It is people, ( my parents, role models and mentors) My purpose , why am I here and my priorities ( found this out late in life), making time for the things that I value most in life. I had to understand

that the concept of identity is my role in the world. It is self-identity and social- identity and how the factors portrays in my life. When you know your significance and your unique formed identity, people are drawn to you. My hopes and opportunities further have defined who I am and who I am not.

What qualities are vital to networking and building a community of like minds to ensure growth and continuity?

Once has to be someone who can listen and learn. Be sincere and authentic and have great communication and interpersonal skills. The fundamental role of connecting is to show genuine enthusiasm and be open minded , can raise your profile, opportunities and advance your opportunities and development. Building a successful career takes a lot of time and drive, so it is great to have people that you can draw from. Surround yourself with people who have and share a similar drive and ambition. Networking does result in opportunities, both personal and business. It is also great for your confidence as you continue to push yourself further and your growth is dependant on how effective your connections are.

You have come a long way your self , do you still have people you look up to?

We all do need people to look up to. The most empowering attribute is when you can ask yourself “ what would they do?” I have admired and respect various individuals , I call wisdom teachers. These are the wisdom teachers that I have been inspired by and admired and appreciate the impact they have had in the world. Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his way of life has had the most impact and influence. But also everyday people that are change makers and all trying to make the world a better and impactful society. I have read about, met and heard people who have made a true and measurable impact in the world, from well known experts, authors, journalists scientists and entrepreneurs, but also everyday people who have continued to play their part and contributed to their highest level. People that continue to dedicate themselves to what gives their life meaning and purpose .People who use their power and influence to impact. People that show compassion and empathy have a special honour in my life.

Let us in on something people don’t really know about you I am a soon to be a published author( dream) I am writing a memoir called Brave,Today and its a book that is deeply personal where Katie stitches her narrative together through a series of stories that would evolve into life lessons. Her insight into people’s behaviours, motives and attitudes is particularly thoughtful, proving a refreshing philosophical take on our understanding of personal, familial and

business relationships. I navigate my story via a consciously reckoned thought-stream of unique defining experiences, but it is my clarity of human analysis that will really resonate with readers. These pages will have you provoked, motivated, and inspired - often simultaneously. My book may be about my history, but it is written with such empathetic sagacity that it provides every reader with valuable insights into both their immediate lives, and the fabric of life itself.

For people in this category, their bust and hip measurements are the same with a waist 8-10 inches smaller than the bust measurement. Fitted dresses are a goal-getter for those in this category. Wearing pants that require the use of a belt at the waistline is also very ideal. You should wear clothing that would gather stares at your waist region. Revealing a bit of tummy flesh won’t be a bad idea. Wrap tops will do just enough magic for you.

Those with the apple shape can be said to be curvy. Just that their waistline isn’t well defined as that of “hourglass and pear shape”. To give you that classy feeling, binge-on pants won’t be bad with polos. Knee-length skirt, jean jackets, and free dresses is also a go attire for those in this category. Don’t wear clingy dresses and also avoid wearing tight tops so tummy won’t be so visible.

Not forgetting those with inverted triangle body shapes. People in this category tend to he broad shoulders with an average bust and their hips aren’t too curvy. The upper part of their body tends to look more pronounced than the lower part of their body. Wearing fitted pants and skirts will do. Free off- shoulder dresses will also enhance their body well. But avoid wearing tops that stop before your hip region. Your tops should cover your hip region.

For an average female, a length of 33 inches should be just okay for your back length of shirts/tops and the front of it could be about 28inches long. I bet you’ll want to try this combination. It’ll do just that magic you could envision.

Then comes those with the rectangular body shape. They are not curvy. There’s little to no difference between their bust, waist, and hip. Their body is just in the right proportion. Wearing boat neck dresses, off-shoulder, kimonos, long jackets, shirts, and free pants will do them just fine.

Before one talks about a color that suits your skin, you need to know that there’s a difference between skin tone and skin undertone. The color of your skin’s surface is referred to as your skin tone. The typical descriptions of skin tone are fair, medium, or deep. While undertones tend to focus more on what lies under the surface.

While people with cool undertones tend to drift more toward blue , pink or red hues, those with warm undertones have skin that lends itself to gold, yellow, and peachy colors. An example of a fair undertone is light tan skin. Colors like orange, white, gold, pink and blue will sit just well on you. For one with perfect pale white skin, how about you try red? Recently a client said to me, ‘Kiru, I have tried everything to lose weight but nothing works’. My answer was ‘it’s about time you take care of your gut pets’. She looked at me quite puzzled.

Almost a decade ago, I was struggling to lose weight. I had dysbiosis, indigestion, was bloated all the time, and struggled with low immunity, nothing helped me until I decided to go into a gut health journey.

When we set out to lose weight, we often think of counting calories, exercise and fasting, but we never think about fixing what may be the root cause of weight gain and resistance – your gut microbiome!

They went on to say if you have 60% firmicutes and 40% bacteroidetes, this ratio will set you up for weight gain. Akkermansia and Christensenella are good gut bacteria that are linked with preventing weight gain and are often found in slim individuals. The microbial diversity of obese patients is much lower than that in healthy individuals. This is why you may find some people can eat whatever they want and stay skinny while other person eat a carrot and gain weight.

Growing evidence suggests, we not only need the right proportions of bacteria, but also need a vast diversity of bacteria to lose weight. However, modern life is full of toxins that hurt your gut bacteria. Antibiotics, western diets, stress, sleep deprivation, birth control, and environmental pollutants (mercury, lead, pollution, perfumes, etc) decimate good bacteria, creating an imbalance of bad to good bacteria, leading you to store more fat than usual.

TURKISH WOMEN BUSINESS WORLD IN POLITICS AND

The act of participation in Turkish politics, can be carried out for many purposes, such as working in election campaigns, watching rallies, taking part in political debates, voting, providing individual and organizational interests, influencing political decisions, taking part in the administration, and gaining political status. The same approach can be applied in business practices, as well.

Nowadays, women are still facing obstacles in their political participation worldwide. The socioeconomic factors emerge as an obstacle to the advancement of women. Women can get empowerment in politics only if they get a reservation in politics. Social barriers can also be overcome when the roots of women are raised and activated in politics. I believe that it is required to provide some positive discriminations against women in order to balance the inequality between men and women in the social sphere. Discrimination on behalf of women, dictates structuring of the current political and economic order. It is easier to assess the representation of women in politics, by looking at the female parliamentary seats. In Turkey, when we look at the 2015 general elections, it is seen that women, who constitute 50% of the population, were represented in the parliament with 98 female deputies. The rate of female representation in parliament has only risen to 17.8%. At the last general election (2018), there were only 103 women out of 600 deputies in total, at the Turkish Parliament. Currently, the rate of women deputies in the Parliament remains at 17.2 percent. It can be clearly said that this rate is insufficient in terms of women’s representation in Turkey. Interestingly, 33 cities have no female MPs.

Currently, there is only 23.3 percent of the female parliamentary seats in the world, which is very limited. In Turkey’s case, this rate is 6

percent lower than the world’s average.

In Turkey, there are several civil society organizations working to increase women’s participation in the political sphere and to ensure equality in democracy, indeed. The leading ones are KADER (Association for Supporting Women Candidates) and KADEM (Association for Women and Democracy).

KADER made a survey on women’s representation in politics in March 2011, and this showed that the low representation of women in politics is attributed to the lack of adequate support for women by political parties rather than women’s traditional family roles. For this reason, it is concluded that the lack of women’s participation in the political sphere is not unidirectional. KADER and KADEM are continuously struggling the Turkish political system on order to achieve a goal on positive discrimination, is to make it compulsory for all political parties to implement the 30% gender quota, which is called the critical threshold throughout the world, or to make it compulsory by ensuring that it is enacted into law. In this way, it is believed that women will be more effective in parliament and that parliament will take more efficient and effective decisions on women’s issues.

Gender quotas can be implemented in two ways in the world. The first option is to define the quota in the constitution or in the law on political parties and elections to ensure that all political parties in that country are obliged to implement gender quotas. Another option is that quotas are left to the discretion of political parties. They can set the quota limit themselves in their own statutes or they can refuse to adopt such a practice in favor of affirmative action. In Turkey, it is

observed that the second option is realized in practice, and there is no binding law for parties on positive discrimination.

The experience in the world and in Turkey shows that the current structure and culture in local and general assemblies and political party management levels do not give women the right to an effective representation unless it is mandatory for each gender to be given at least a certain proportion of representation. In Turkish society, although there were lots of achievements and good practices, still the activities of men and women are divided outside and inside of the home. Therefore, the social mobility of women is, to some extent, restricted and controlled. It is observed that men are given better education to compete, in particular at rural areas. Women have become dependent on men due to lack of resources outside the house, and hence, in the social, economic and political areas, men become the basis of power. The role of women in the formation of economic and social policies is negligible, especially in Eastern Anatolian towns. Due to being away from women’s decision-making bodies, they do not get any chance to raise their concerns or promote their participation in politics, and business world. Mostly, men dominate the system of governance in Turkey.

Under the Turkish constitution, women have the right to political, socio-economic equality. This right should be implemented by giving them the real form. Women, who are considered to be the cornerstone of Turkish society, need to claim their share of women’s empowerment. Important progress in this regard, has been made in some regions in Western Anatolia, and big towns, notably in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Turkey’s women are ambitious, self-confident, visionary and successful warriors in every profession. Thanks to their infinite potential, women are advancing in every field based on their educational abilities. However, women in Turkey struggle to find full opportunities in politics and business. In the top management of large companies and/or political parties or in the government, women are rarely seen, only in a few names. This situation is undoubtedly unworthy of Turkey. In the near future, I believe that Turkish women will find their place in political and business life more and more, because Turkish women are really struggling successfully to reach the position they deserve in society, and they are reaping the fruits of this struggle every day. Therefore, I believe that the place of Turkish women in business, working life and politics in Turkey will be much brighter than it is today.

The above descriptions or short definition is a summary of the definitions from various Scholars and Researchers. Now in summary, we can now combine Legality and Business as one, which is the subject matter of our discussion.

Legality in business can simply mean that in doing business in whatever form, one must follow due process of the law or the required process as stipulated in the law that establishes such business.

This is a topic that is so important to every business to become operative. First things first. There must be legal requirements for starting a business such as; creating a company, registering the business name, applying for a tax number whether Federal or State, obtaining of permits and licenses where necessary, Insurance cover, Bank accounts and Consultation with Professionals from time to time.

What then is the meaning of a Legal Business? A Legal Business again can be defined as any company or organization with legal rights and responsibilities of any activity entered into for profits. Also, what must be considered are the legal aspects for any business to succeed such as, the legal structures and liabilities, taking on employees, the premises for the business, terms and conditions for the business, licenses, copy rights, trade marks, patents etc. and public relations, responsible for handling of the personal information for the business.

In furtherance to starting a new business venture, the parties involved should make sure they comply with all the legal obligations of running the business. CHANGING IN TIMES OF CHANGE: THE ROLE OF NATURAL GAS AND INNOVATION AS CRITICAL COMPONENTS IN OVERCOMING GLOBAL ENERGY CHALLENGE

It appears that the COVID-19 epidemic will finally be contained, economies will rebound (some economies have already picked up even faster than expected), and our attention will turn back to the future. The future’s general shape is already apparent. Global cooperation will be (has been) pledged in the attempt to ultimately address the energy challenge, climate change, and environmental degradation.

From the foregoing, we also know that the world is moving towards a more inclusive, secure, cost-effective, and sustainable future regarding energy. Energy transition is not a new phenomenon; historically, humans have utilized wood for energy, then peat, and then coal, which began to be used around 1750.

Oil came later, around 1875, and natural gas around 1950. These prior examples show that technologically enabled energy transitions are common and mostly driven by economic and geopolitical factors rather than fundamental resource shortages.

The continuing energy transition is progressing in a similar manner, with innovation serving as a key motivator. But this time, extraordinary public pressure and policy action are fostering it in response to growing global worries about climate change. The current energy transition could be the fastest one ever, helped along by innovations and technological advancements that have made it possible to put more ambitious policies into place.

Energy-related issues are among the most significant and challenging problems the world is now facing. Major improvements in energy supply and efficiency will be necessary to fulfil the demands of a growing global population with improving living standards. It will be increasingly harder to accomplish this while reducing the threats of climate change.

Regarding the tough shift to new energy sources, there is no “silver bullet” and/or magic solution. There are several technological choices. Opinions are very divided regarding their impacts on the economy, society, and environment. Additionally, there are strong hopes that future technological advancements will be essential in enabling the shift to a low-carbon economy.

FUSING TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND GLOBAL ENERGY TRANSITION

Advances in technology have led to breakthrough improvement in varying industries over the past few decades. Today’s businesses use technology extensively to automate and re-engineer their processes – to improve scaling capacities and optimize their procedures. Innovation is another name for technology, and in business, innovation is used to describe improved services, products, or rapidly changing service requirements. And because the world is undergoing an energy transition, innovation will be critical to overcoming the many challenges of this transition.

Unsurprisingly, there is no “silver bullet” technology or method to decarbonize energy; instead, a variety of technologies must be used, each of which may be implemented at a reasonable cost depending on the market, the preferences of the country, and

the existing infrastructure. Of course, other elements to take into account include the system costs and value of various technologies, which will vary depending on local conditions in other nations. An evaluation of the systems costs and value, however, is outside the purview of this article.

Be that as it may, let us agree on one key component –that the transition to sustainable energy is dependent on innovation. By enhancing current procedures and coming up with fresh approaches to addressing the demands of many players, it adds value to the economy. Technology innovation increases the range of alternatives and possible strategies accessible in the context of accomplishing long-term policy goals, and it gradually lowers the costs of doing so. Technology innovation does not evolve in a vacuum: the structure of the market, public support for entrepreneurship, and direct government investment all influence how rapidly new technologies emerge and are adopted. This is as true for energy as it is for other sectors of the economy.

It is crucial to acknowledge the pressing demand for more energy with less of an environmental effect. Setting high goals to deal with these difficulties is also important. But now that that has been done, the next stage is to carry out these plans. Not as easy as it seems. This article believe that the most crucial aspect in ensuring that plans are carried out is creativity and/or innovation. Innovation, put simply, is the creation of an idea or a product that solves a problem in a fresh, improved manner. It is most likely most closely related with technology in energy circles. And we should not take innovation for granted. If it is not promoted and ingrained in the new generations entering the workforce, it will not occur at the scale we require. Although history has romanticized the concept that creative ideas are the result of lone labor and isolated flashes of inspiration, or the “eureka” moment, the truth is very different. It typically requires lengthy hours of arduous effort in partnership with others. To me, innovation is just that. It is not a solution for challenges of the twenty-first century. Since the beginning of the oil and gas industry, it has been a vital component at its core.

On the flip side, it is unavoidable that people and economies will require more and more energy. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy demand is anticipated to increase by close to 40% by 2040. To meet this need, several sources of greener energy will be required. Fossil fuels

currently account for a large part of global energy production. And, as I have said many times before, take it or leave it, oil and gas will be necessary for decades to come.

Which is why energy has rarely been higher up the agenda than it is now. The price of oil and gas seems to hit the headlines every day and analysts, policymakers, politicians, journalists, and the man at the petrol/gas station are all expressing opinions and making predictions about what the price will be next week, next month and beyond. However, I will not be following them down that path. I will instead take a swipe at a topic I coined “Changing In Times Of Change: The Role of Natural Gas And Innovation As Critical Components In Overcoming Global Energy Challenge.” The current situation of the oil and gas business can be summarized as: “prospects good, obstacles considerable.” There is no doubt, and it is no longer debatable, that Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world will significantly require more energy, the majority of which will be supplied by fossil fuels for the foreseeable future.

As a result, the industry’s commercial prospects appear to be promising. This is not a ‘sunset’ industry by any means. Energy will continue to be a vital and active industrial sector. However, delivering the energy that people require is a major difficulty. Many issues confront the industry, but none is more pressing than climate change. My Principal - The Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources – H.E Chief Timipre Sylva has stated Federal Government of Nigeria’s position regarding climate change vis-à-vis ‘‘…Nigeria requires fossil fuel as its baseload energy source…only renewable energy as the sole pathway to energy transition is a source of concern for African countries that are still working to achieve baseload industrialization, address energy poverty & ensure reliable power supply.” “…we reject the concept of a single pathway to the energy transition. Indeed, we prefer the concept of ‘just’ energy transition which takes into cognizance the specific circumstances of each nation in developing the energy transition pathway that best achieves the environmental, social, political, and economic objectives of the transition in that specific nation.” “Multiple pathways to the energy transition should and must exist in order to ensure that no country is left behind in the process of achieving net-zero by 2050.”

Although there is no longer complete agreement on the Paris Agreement, no other problem has the ability to disrupt the energy sector on such a deep and basic level.

In response, I believe we must evolve, and that is exactly what the energy sector is doing with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which was signed into law by Nigeria’s president - His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2021. The PIA will transform Nigeria’s petroleum industry into a commercial hub of business opportunities. One thing is certain: the PIA has now achieved a balance between urgent revenue demands and the necessity for long-term investment in the industry. This was especially important given that Nigeria received only 4% of the $70 billion invested in Africa’s oil and gas industry between 2015 and 2019, even though it is the continent’s largest producer and has the highest reserves. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the industry received only $53.5 million, or 0.55 percent, of Nigeria’s total investment of $9.680

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

Let’s get back to innovation. Energy transitions have historically relied heavily on innovation and will continue to do so. Innovation is just the use of new technology and techniques with improved and appealing qualities. Technology is currently developing more quickly. Many people think of technological innovation as a fourstage process that includes research, development, demonstration, and implementation. While incremental changes to technology often lead to innovation, this linear approach oversimplifies the relationships between these stages. In the real world, innovation is more complicated; few innovations have a smooth transition from one step to the next, and this model ignores many realities that can arise during the process. For example, even if a technology is extremely successful in one place, it may be inappropriate for purpose or even inadequate in all market conditions, necessitating early-stage attention alongside subsidy-free adoption elsewhere. The instruments available to policymakers to accelerate the benefits of innovation are growing as we get a better knowledge of how it works. So, you can see why Government and the private sector are in this together, hence the need for collaboration. The more reason why, different, more systematic, and collaborative approaches to innovation are required for technologies advantageous to energy transitions. The energy system of the future will be clean and net zero. One of the important levers for enabling clean energy integration and reducing carbon emissions is the merging of artificial intelligence and digital technology with future energy solutions.

Today, technological innovation is viewed as critical to the industry’s revival, as there are numerous technology choices that can help to streamline and optimize procedures. Now, developments are centered on harnessing computational and technology resources for process safety, environmental control, and fuel quality. It entails comprehending the people who create and use technologies, as well as the social and political conventions that govern their interactions. Many of the technologies that will become commonplace in the future will require society to adjust to their unique characteristics. This could include new driving and fuelling habits, increased individual control over residential energy supply, and new industrial practices that will necessitate new regulatory measures.

In a lecture titled “Energy transition and energy accessibility - The new paradigm,” delivered at the 30th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Nigeria Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, said that Nigeria and other African countries must leverage technology and innovation to facilitate energy access and transition. The necessity to use technology and innovation to enhance energy security, industrialization, job creation, and economic growth, according to the GCEO, has grown undeniably.

OVERCOMING THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH

To transform innovative clean energy concepts into products that can be sold, or to move ideas from demonstration to commercial dissemination, a stage I refer to as the “valley of the shadow of death,” it is imperative to have a strong commercialization plan. Commercialization flourishes in environments backed by strong institutional structures and other governmental procedures in addition to a favourable investment climate.

That said, let us not also forget that, despite significant management time and money investments, technology innovation remains a painful quest in many businesses. Why is it so difficult to develop and retain an innovative capacity? The causes go far beyond the most usually cited cause: a lack of execution. The lack of an innovation strategy is at the base of the problem with innovation improvement attempts. A strategy is simply a commitment to a set of consistent, mutually reinforcing policies or behaviours with the goal of accomplishing a specified competitive goal. Good strategies improve an organization’s varied groups align, establish objectives and priorities, and focus efforts on those goals. Oil and gas companies need to define their overarching business strategy (scope and positioning) on a regular basis, as well as how other functions support it.

Without an innovation strategy, efforts to improve innovation can easily devolve into a jumble of wellpublicized best practices: The problem is that an oil and gas organization’s ability to innovate is determined by its innovation system, which is a set of interdependent processes and structures that governs how the company searches for new problems and solutions, synthesizes ideas into a business concept and product designs, and chooses which projects to fund. Individual best practices necessitate compromises. Adopting a single technique typically necessitates a slew of other adjustments to the oil and gas organization’s innovation system. Without an innovation strategy, an oil and gas business will be unable to make trade-off judgments and select all the components of the innovation system.

Ultimately, even if a clear business strategy exists, without an innovation strategy, different segments of an oil and gas organization might easily end up pursuing contradictory agendas. Diverse viewpoints are necessary for successful innovation. The strength of variety is blunted or, worse, self-defeating without a strategy to integrate and align different perspectives around common aims. The process of designing an innovation strategy, like any effective plan, should begin with a clear understanding and articulation of specific objectives connected to assisting the energy organization in achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. This necessitates moving beyond all-too-common platitudes like “We must innovate to expand,” “We must innovate to create value,” and “We must innovate to remain ahead of the competition.” That for me is not a strategy. They give no indication of the types of innovation that might matter (or won’t).

There are several examples throughout history of how innovation has improved things. Consider how, since the Industrial Revolution, innovations in materials, chemical processes, and industrial procedures have resulted in ever more valuable goods and services, capped most recently by advances in information technology. The global energy system’s fuel mix has also evolved over time because of innovation. New fuels were simply added to the mix to some extent. But, in part, fuels have supplanted one another: coal has supplanted wood, oil has supplanted coal, and gas is gradually supplanting oil. Take, for example, natural gas, which has recently become a popular energy source. It is the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. It is abundant. Innovative seismic-survey methodologies, drilling techniques, and production technology have all contributed to its newfound abundance. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has established itself as a global industry, and gas-to-liquids chemistry has emerged from the lab. It is not a case of one source versus the other when it comes to energy supply; the world requires all of them. Otherwise, the demand will not be met. At the same time, we must strike a balance between the demand for greater energy and environmental protection. The answer to resolving this problem is innovation. It allows us to strike a balance between environmental impact and availability and affordability. However, open innovation alone will not be sufficient to bring us through the energy transition. World-scale deployment is required to make a difference on a global basis. You and I know that if an invention sits on a lab workbench, it will do little help in the world. It needs to be commercialized, mass produced, and scaled up. Natural gas will play a significant role in the coming decades. But, to continue playing that role indefinitely, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) must be engineered to function on a large scale. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a term that refers to a group of technologies that can help achieve a variety of global energy and climate goals.

Gas will play an important part in addressing our future energy needs, and it may be exploited in a complementary manner to oil, benefiting both resource owners and energy users. The potential for sustained large rise in gas demand is obvious and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be a crucial driver in meeting that need. The creation of a larger, more dynamic, and more complicated gas market will be fuelled by the increase of LNG, as well as the emergence of gas to liquids. There are significant hurdles ahead in that market, not least in terms of supplying the new infrastructure and vast expenditure required to carry gas across evergreater distances. Meeting those problems will necessitate action on the part of all parties concerned. The energy industry, on the other hand, has a track record of effectively overcoming such obstacles, and there is every reason to believe that the potential of gas will be realized by leveraging on innovative and disruptive technologies.

SUMMING UP

By 2050, global energy demand will double and could even triple from the level of back in 2000. Which means the world, Africa and indeed Nigeria is going to require all forms of energy i.e., natural gas, crude oil, coal, renewables and nuclear to meet global energy demand. At the same time, the world must reduce CO2 emissions in half by transitioning to a more sustainable energy system, To fulfil rising demand in the future decades, the globe will almost certainly require significantly more energy. Many people might be raised out of poverty, just as they were before. And, as previously, our industry has the potential to be a driving force behind this advancement.

However, this is only a portion of the story. True, the planet requires additional energy. However, we must generate all this energy with generating far less CO2. Of course, this is a major driving force behind the energy transition.

I am frequently asked, “How will this transformation unfold?” So, plainly, I am incapable of foreseeing the future. However, I am certain that the energy system of the twenty-first century will be a dynamic mix of renewables and hydrocarbons.

The world will need to invest heavily in energy production, both in traditional sources and in renewables. The broader perspective, of course is, a world looking for affordable and reliable energy to drive both economic growth and improved living standards. The global middle class is expected to double to nearly 5 billion, which means twice as many people will need commercial fuels for heating, cooling, mobility, and manufacturing. The benefits of natural gas are well documented. It is flexible. Its supply is abundant and diverse. Its range of uses is still expanding. And it makes economic sense. Natural gas is a cleaner-burning fossil fuel, economic to produce, scalable, and complementary to intermittent renewables. Natural gas is one of the few energy sources that can meet many energy needs: to generate electricity, heat homes, power industry, and fuel ships and trucks. According to the International Energy Agency, there are enough recoverable natural gas resources to last more than 200 years at current levels of consumption.

Despite the critical role of renewables, they cannot provide all the world’s energy needs. Renewables chiefly power electricity, which only meets around 20% - 25% of global energy demand There is no single or simple solution to turn emissions around. Multiple approaches and technologies – including much greater efficiency are required across all parts of the energy system, alongside a clear-eyed appreciation of where emissions occur and what the abatement options are in each area.

Plus, innovation and technological advancements have a significant impact on industry and society, as history and time have demonstrated. That is why, now that we understand the importance of the environment and see it as an asset that must be protected, we have a greater responsibility than ever to employ technology whose primary goal is to conserve the environment and the planet. If the world wants to meet expanding energy demand for human development while avoiding catastrophic climate change, it must transition to a cleaner energy system. Many causes, including economic growth, customer choice, emerging creative technology, and national legislation, are driving this transformation. Collaboration across industries is critical to achieving net-zero emissions.

The industry must work with governments to highlight the benefits of gas in delivering a sustainable energy future, as well as to encourage the implementation of regulations and policies that will give gas a level playing field on which to compete and claim its rightful place as the world’s leading energy source. We continue to develop as an industry, delivering new sources of supply and new sources of demand that provide our consumers with reliable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable choices to meet their energy needs.

So, while this is a time of change and challenge for everyone, especially here in Nigeria, the energy industry in Nigeria has a tremendous strength and depth of experience that will guarantee that it adapts successfully to that transition. While the future remains unpredictable, one thing is certain: energy will stay at the center of policy debates. It is unavoidable and non-negotiable.

In closing, I’d like to pose some questions that could elicit some responses from you the reader. If we agree that innovation will allow us to provide more energy to the globe while reducing its environmental impact, how can we ensure that tomorrow’s generation is prepared to supply it? To put it another way, how can we encourage more young people to choose careers in science and engineering?

Ladies and gentlemen, friends, and colleagues: These are not simple questions to respond to. And quite frankly, I think they must, however, be answered. Derefaka (MNSE) is the Technical Adviser (TA) on Gas Business & Policy Implementation to the Honorable Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Ministry of Petroleum Resources (MPR), Federal Republic of Nigeria. In this role, he drives the National Gas Policy mirrored in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA 2021) implementation - a supplyside enabler, capable of provoking and triggering commercial interests and investments in gas utilisation, treating gas as a stand-alone commodity, creating a distinct midstream decoupled from upstream gas; promoting gas distribution pipelines in gas-scarce areas, delivering massive volumes of gas daily to industrial demand centers and commercial clusters, and strengthening a thriving and cost-effective virtual pipeline delivery system that enables flexible, remote, and micro-volume delivery to gas consumers across the country.

He is the pioneer Program Manager (PM) of the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialization Programme (NGFCP); and Chairman – Capacity Building Development (CBD) Subcommittee as well as Program Manager (PM) – AutoGas Subcommittee, of the National Gas Expansion Program (NGEP) in the office of the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

Dr. Derefaka is a Marine Engineering graduate from the Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He has a master’s degree in environmental management from the University of Lagos (Unilag), Nigeria and a second master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership from the prestigious University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (UK). He also has a doctorate degree in business administration from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom. Prior to the above roles, Dr. Derefaka manages health (i.e., occupational), safety and environment (HSE) for all pipeline asset for the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). Previously, he was with Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) as the Head, Environment and Social Performance. In this role, he identifies and manages critical “Non-Technical Risks – NTRs’” issueswhich is well researched and documented that 73% - 75% of oil and gas project delays are attributed to NTR causing

project cost overruns and delays due largely to external stakeholders. He also drives and provides statutory regulatory Compliance and environmental expertise to SNEPCo Deepwater projects (DWP) by ensuring environment and Social/community Performance deliverables are fully embedded in SNEPCo Deep water projects and Bonga Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) operating asset. At different times in SPDC, he was the Corporate Head, Materials and Waste Management Discipline and subject matter expert (SME) for Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN) and Shell Gabon, respectively.

want to do. I hear their story but mostly I listen to what they don’t say.

As a Global award-winning Business Advisor and Mentor, I can honestly say there is no greater privilege I share than when I work with women, other than the work I do in Tanzania where I develop future leaders (yes, I run and fund leadership programs for children starting at the age of 11 and 12 through to aspiring entrepreneurs).

My clients have different passions, different visions, and certainly different aspirations but above all, they must be aligned to my core values and have the commitment to pay things forward in developing others.

My impact mission is to support people to find their place of genius from becoming a leader that influences for impact, because I believe you need more than your “WHY”. In every case it is about equipping someone else with tools, skills and tangible tips to live a life that they deserve.

Oddly enough most people don’t recognise their own patterns and that is what often holds them back – their “Blind Spots”. When I look at some of the traits or behaviours of successful entrepreneurs, I see the following: -

• Effective Time Management

• Strong and effective Communication skills

• Being able to build relationships

• Creating trust and a safe space to fail

Are you starting to see where I am going? Can you see the skills that you hold as a woman? Everything that you do every day, is what it takes to be that successful person; that successful leader; that successful entrepreneur!

Pause for a moment to think about where you are today and where you would like to be.

As a woman, I know you just look at what you do every single day as something you simply need to do, and yes, you are right, you do need to do it all because you want to achieve the best outcome for your family, your children, your partner and yes last, but not least, for you.

However, each of these skills that you possess makes for a successful entrepreneur, yet we don’t seem to see these skills as transferable skills in business. For those of you who had a career before family, all you can see is yourself in that old job and wonder how you can find your way back into that corporate ladder. Holding onto the limitations that had been placed upon you from old beliefs and an industrialised age of employment.

I encourage you to pause and ask yourself; what is holding you back? What forms part of your thought process that keeps you in the confines of your perception?

Fear is not what is holding you back, it is often not knowing where to start.

Let’s start to break down the barriers.

Whilst there will be trepidation in taking those steps forward, I would like to share some insight so you can begin to shift the lens in which you see things.

Fear may be a driver that precludes you in taking a step forward, as will doubt, but the reality is, what really holds most women back is the clarity in which they can step forward!

Yes, it’s that simple. I know that as you read this again, you will smile. You know that there is merit in what I have just shared with you. GREAT, because this now means you have broken a cycle.

You now know that there is path. You now know that you do have transferable skills and well let’s face it – time is not going to be an issue because you have been mastering time management from when you were a child, as you were contributing to the family home, then you extended it further as you embraced a career, studied, and became a leader in some way as others looked up at you, and then again as a wife and perhaps again as a mum.

You see at every stage you have been building on your existing foundations and learned patterns and behaviours.

Bouncing forward to be the real you I have set up business since 1997 and scaled business across the globe, across different industries, so what I am sharing with you comes from lived experience. Knowing the foundations of where to start is important so that you begin the journey of discovery with a strong base. As a strategist (or otherwise known as an Alchemist in business) I love this initial process of discovery. Breaking down the moulds and leaving behind the shackles of who you were, or who you limited yourself to be, to who you now choose to be, is the most rewarding.

I share the same creative journey when I talk to young people when they look at their future and ask themselves “what do I want to do when I finish school?”. This process is not a marketing strategy, although many will try and sell that to you. It is a process that allows you to identify what IMPACT you want to make. Bouncing forward allows you to leap well into the future; to see yourself as you exit your business and the person you want to be known for.

As a woman, you have some ideas about what that looks like because you look at your child/children, nieces, nephews and know that you want them to know what you stand for. You want them to know what your values are, and you want them to have the confidence in doing what they want in life.

As women, we have the ability to influence for impact and to show others, and our future generation that everything

is possible, that you are unstoppable and that you will not only be part of the change you want to see for yourself, but for the world as a whole.

Aligning values in business shapes a better tomorrow and that is what women do best

When you know your values in life and align them into everything you do – success becomes a natural path. There is harmony in the way in which you engage, there is honesty and transparency in the way in which you do business. Most of all you work with collaboration and the elevation of others.

It’s about having the structure to step forward and recognise that there are blind spots and that it’s ok to ask for help. Seeking out support from someone who has done what you want to do, this step allows you to get there faster.

Knowing the “end to end” process in setting up a business and you knowing how to find your “north star” or as I call it “your place of genius” so you stay on track is what I do best.

When you play to your strengths you create greater impact. You have more efficacy and greater efficiency. Most importantly, identify what you aren’t great at and bring someone on board to share the journey with you.

As you pause again to think about all the skills you hold, think about taking ownership and giving yourself permission, and the best opportunity to succeed so when take that step forward, you know who you choose to be.

You are now influencing others as you become the role model for someone else.

One last question – ask yourself ... If not today, when?

If you have the little tingle in your belly or can hear the little voice in your head, don’t leave it for another day. Know that you hold the passion, the skills and traits already, it is just about being clear about your intentions and knowing the IMPACT you want to make to step forward to become the successful entrepreneur you know you want to be.

You just turned a year older. Kindly share with us lessons the previous year taught you and what you are most grateful for.

On the contrary, I feel that every year I am younger, and age has nothing to do with my ambitions. We learn from exposure and our experiences. I have learned over the years that happiness comes from what we do ourselves and not waiting for others. One of the most important aspects for which I am grateful is health. Its true value we do not realize until we feel sick.

Well, you are sweetie... but permit us to call you beautieeautie. How do you look ageless and graceful?

It’s great to receive a compliment, thank you for that.

Sometimes our interest in beauty and self-appearance declines with the family responsibilities and busy work life. I am convinced that every woman makes her own decision in taking care of her appearance. The truth is that my husband never interfered in my choices. He always appreciates my aspirations and my taste in fashion. I think my

taste in choosing fashion is also driven by my interest in the latest trends, and my search for what suits me and makes me more look beautiful and brighter. A woman’s interest in her appearance boosts her self-confidence, no matter what challenges they face. Everyone should always strive to look fresh and happy; it is much easier than we sometimes think it is. Once you achieve a balance in the life that you live, you will find yourself in permanent youth that everyone envies you for. Many healthy habits can help you maintain a bright appearance if they are followed consistently, as reviewed by this report according to the American website “Eat This, Not That”.

What are you looking forward to achieving in this new age?

Many people do not have goals drawn in their lives that are reviewed from time to time. While some studies and statistics say that only 2% of people have succeeded and achieved their goals, 98% did not. I think a key reason for that is that those goals are not written down. How would you describe Your duties as Ambassador of hope in Sheikh Saud Charity foundation?

I was chosen as a social activist by the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Educational Charitable Foundation to be the ambassador of hope, to spread the message of hope as a media ambassador to help students with limited resources to complete their educational journey. There are many ways to donate, through SMS messages on du and Etisalat or through bank transfer in Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank I was chosen to be one of the influencers on this program.

Can you let us in on how you spent your childhood?

Memories are the little things that help run our lives smoothly. In other words, memories are irreplaceable and very dear to us. They help us learn from our mistakes and make us better. In my opinion, childhood memories are the dearest thing anyone has. They help keep the child in you alive and sometimes make you smile when you are all grown up and stressed out. No one hardly remembers everything from his childhood, whether they were pleasant or painful. Various things happened in my childhood, but I remember a few of them. I often talk about and remember the happy days I spent with the family a lot. My life was with many lovely families headed by our kind father and caring mother. I have six beautiful sisters and two sweet brothers. They are also my best friends. I had a beautiful, calm and reassuring family life. Of course, there were many difficulties in life, but with the presence of the father and mother, we did not feel that. I miss my father, as he died while I was in university. I finished my university education, completed my MBA and now I am preparing for a PhD in Business Administration from the Swiss International Business Academy and I will complete that within the next few months.

How does your work impact the women within your community and the larger society?

I like to believe that I have a positive impact on the lives of women in my community. Especially in the media field, with the emergence of new media and digital platforms over the past years and the expansion of work horizons, it is considered one of the most vital and developed fields.

Women play a pivotal role that affects the whole society, their work and active role in all different walks of life have become vital. One woman’s work reflects positively on the other woman and society. It contributes to reducing poverty. According to the World Bank, Female labour market income in Latin America contributed to reducing extreme poverty by 30% over 10 years.

Emarati women are an essential pillar of our workforce and the development of the UAE. Our achievements became a tangible reality from dreams. Our leadership, inspired by the path set out by our founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul) has greatly supported Emarati women in every field to play leading roles and contribute remarkably to the process of comprehensive and sustainable development.

Perhaps one of the most prominent sectors in which Emarati women have distinguished themselves and reserved their privileged position is working in the press and media sector in the UAE and GCC. Emarati women have been able to put their mark on the development of media in the country and be able to raise an educated and enlightened generation capable of developing our nation with diligence and determination.

Recently you were certified by the global union of journalists and media persons. What led you down this road?

I loved the media field since I was a young girl. I have managed to overcome old society stereotypes with education and development. Our society has now evolved to be more open. Although my major is not media, I worked hard to develop myself by attending courses and conferences, I am a Leo, and my leadership personality contributed to the realization of my dreams.

The Foundation of the World Federation of Journalists and Media granted me a certificate and membership of the Federation, in appreciation of my efforts in advancing the field of media and journalism through dealing with various segments of society and raising

environmental awareness. I also value the role of the institution in granting the certificate and membership. It is an institution registered in Britain and its main objective is to strengthen relations between journalists, media professionals and society.

Functioning in this capacity what should Emarati women expect from you?

Anyone woman who reaches out to me for support in the media industry. I see it as my duty to help and guide them as much as possible. It appears to be that Henna is part of your style.

How would you define your style?

I am a woman who loves henna and elegance. Henna is one of the most important parts of women’s heritage in the Gulf region. Women have always adorned it, in our country it is not just beautiful drawings and inscriptions, but a tradition closely related to customs and folklore. Personal elegance is among the many positive qualities that women seek to acquire. It plays a major role in improving social relations and boosts self-confidence. Elegance does not mean that clothes and possessions are expensive or completely different from common clothes. I remember that from my childhood I was very interested in my appearance, and I still consider this as one of my daily habits, I do not remember ever leaving the house without wearing lipstick. While I was in labour for my first baby, a hospital attendant tried to wipe my face and out of habit I told her to be careful not to wipe my lipstick. I saw colours come and go on the attendant’s face, but then we both laughed and she told my husband that she had never come across a situation like this in her career.

I always tell this story to my daughters and we joke about it.

What new adaptations should women leaders focus on in the continued struggle for female equality?

I will talk about the role of our beloved country’s inequality between men and women, since its founding, the United Arab Emirates has witnessed God willing, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan (may God rest his soul) major transformations and fast in various economic, social and political fields, especially in the field of advancement of women’s

issues and their societal participation, and the empowerment of women With special interest by the wise leadership under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, women have assumed a unique and prestigious position in all sectors of the state, and the United Arab Emirates has become a unique model to follow . In the field of human development, which enabled Emarati women, thanks in the nurturing policies for human rights from the hardships of leadership positions. The United Arab Emirates has sought, since its establishment in 1971, to provide Development projects for the advancement of human beings on the state land in general and women in particular, in the educational, health cultural fields and programs, there is a variety of awareness raising, so we see that the UAE girl is present today in every site in work and construction, and play a natural role in the various field . It’s about involving women in the development process side by side with men, through raising women’s awareness of the importance of their role in society, while providing all opportunities to qualify them to perform this role to be a productive member of her community.

UAE is known for moral standards. Can you share some with us?

There are many moral values in the Emirates, the most important of which are:

Tolerance: People of over 200 nationalities live in UAE from different religions and cultures in perfect harmony.

Innovation and leadership: Innovation is the backbone of entrepreneurship and plays a very important role in driving economic growth. The largest share of economic output in developed countries is due to technological innovations. UAE is a model country in promoting entrepreneurship through innovation.

Respect for the Elderly: In UAE culture it is ingrained in our DNA to care for parents and grandparents. Adherence to these moral values and customs is the teachings of our Islam.

Women’s Empowerment:

Emarati women have always been an important and effective element in the country’s progress, and an integral part of the demographics, working side by side with men to enable the country to achieve its high aspirations and unparalleled achievements. 75% of working Emarati women work in the education and healthcare sectors. 23,000 Emarati women

entrepreneurs run projects worth more than 50 billion dirhams. Emarati women occupy about 20% of the country’s representation positions in the diplomatic arena, including the presence of female ambassadors at the United Nations. The UAE is the first country in the region to require all government institutions and companies to have women members on their boards of directors. Women also occupy 15% of seats on the board of the chamber of commerce and industry across the country. The presence of rational and interactive leadership always seeks to enhance the capabilities of Emarati women, and launch important initiatives such as the National Program for IT Developers in July 2021 in cooperation with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, IBM, HBE, LinkedIn, NVidia, and Facebook with the aim of training and attracting thousands of developers and the establishment of 1,000 digital companies within five years. This enabled the Emarati women to achieve the impossible, a word that does not exist in the UAE dictionary. There are also government plans to increase investments in start-ups from 1.5 billion dirhams to 4 billion dirhams. In light of these facts, there is no doubt that the future holds promising prospects for Emarati girls who are setting their sights on solving the upcoming challenges that may currently seem “impossible”.

English, Hindi, Urdu and some basic skills in other languages.

What is your idea of happiness?

Mankind has always been in search of tranquillity and happiness and finding new ways to achieve it. Happiness is an inner feeling that a person gets with a peaceful mind, clear conscience and openness of heart. True happiness is a decision that a person takes at will and with patience. If a person resolves to be happy, she will rejoice in the simplest and smallest things and take care of them, and look at them with satisfaction and love, not anger and hatred. We should kick away everything that disturbs us and embrace joy and happiness every day.

A successful woman according to you would be ...?

Balance in life as you know. Human life is divided into four main parts: family and friends, health, wealth and soul. Balance requires clear thinking, imagination

and optimism, and there is no doubt that to achieve success one must strike a balance between these parts.

Many secrets distinguish many successful women from others, although the definition of success varies from one person to other, every woman has goals and ambitions. But there is no doubt that successful women always share characteristics that make them distinguished, the most important of which is contentment. Contentment in sharing and being happy with everything that God has granted us in life. Not looking at what others have so that we do not lose what we have. Contentment is like a great treasure that cannot be destroyed.

Madeleine Albright once said “there is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women”, how are you helping other women around you become successful?

There is an urgent need to provide an incubating environment that helps the diverse workforce achieve prosperity. We have witnessed an accelerated shift in work culture during the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to the acceptance of flexible work models. This is an important departure from the old view that the most successful employees are those who work longer in offices at the expense of their personal lives and time spent with their families or leisure activities. This success criterion is no longer feasible for both men and women. We have to move towards more flexible work models that allow more women to reach success, and allow them to balance family and work.

How would you describe a successful day at the end of each day?

A joyful day with a new life experience to cherish. You are into event organization and other things, what do you find most challenging about what you do and how to do you Thanks to Allah, I generally do not face many difficulties because I have a simple principle in life. When you love your work, you can overcome difficulties and find innovative solutions.

Anju has been an educator since 1994 and has specialized in the early years. She is a mother of two boys, a 19-yearold and a 15-year-old. Apart from being an educator, Anju is an environmentalist, a teacher trainer for early years, a trained yoga teacher, a master chef, a super mom and now, an author of children’s books.

The current time of the Pandemic has brought many challenges and changes in the lifestyle of every person; the most affected are children in their early years. It has been a matter of concern and worry for their parents— whether to take their children out where they could get infected or to keep them at home and they miss out on their social development as well as the other areas of learning. The efforts of launching vaccines around the world for the younger age groups have brought some relief to the worried parents.

Not only the fear of Covid, but parents losing their jobs or facing pay cuts has also been an issue for many families around the world. In such times, as an environmentalist and as a believer of sustainable living, Anju would suggest planning activities for children at home with minimum costs or no costs at all.

Being involved with the child and involving the child in the day-to-day chores will boost up their confidence and teach them the skills required to lead a happy life in their future. Anju never attended a preschool when Anju was a child and neither did her children. It was not the need of the time then. But in today’s world, with nuclear families, both parents working and the cost of hiring a house help being very high, parents are left with no choice but to leave their children at a safe place that nurtures them and takes care of their overall development.

But does leaving your child at a preschool fulfil your duty as a parent? No, as a parent you need to be involved with the child too.

First, the best way is to do so is by talking to the care providers at the setting where your child spends the day. Get the information on what they have done and repeat the same at home. It will save your time of planning out anything on your own and as most parents are not trained to teach, it will be a great help. The child will gain all the benefits and it will be a sort of revision for

the children. Parents will understand the child better when they get involved and will be able to understand the reports of the child and raise questions or queries on the same, if they see that the child is not performing at home in the way as has been mentioned in the report.

Secondly, if parents love to read and research, there are many options available online. There are paid websites and YouTube videos for planning activities for children in different areas of learning for different age groups. You just need to take out the time to research. There are also books and activity packs available for the same, which parents can buy and exchange among their child’s friend circles.

Thirdly, if you cannot do both the abovementioned tasks, just start involving your child in the day-to-day task and see them grow and learn all the skills required for life. As a parent, do not be scared and do not stop the child from exploring in your presence. The more a child explores between the age of 0 to 5, the more connections their brain will make to resolve matters as he grows.

Anju says “I have seen parents being overprotective and not allowing their child to take off their socks, not allowing them to run, making a safe zone everywhere. They do not understand that by being overprotective will only harm the child and hinder his personal, social and emotional growth. Let them be with you when you are performing even the simple daily chores like mashing potatoes,

let them soak the clothes as you do your laundry, let them feel the dust as you wipe the surfaces of your home, let them dig the garden, water the plants and run behind the butterflies and the bees. Let them crush the newspaper, make sounds with empty water bottles, try fixing covers of different jars, play drums using kitchen utensils, hop like a bunny or climb the doors like a monkey. Let them separate grains of different sizes, count the stars at night, see the rainbow and listen to the birds, watch their footprints on sand, hear waves, colour their little hands with coffee and yogurt and see the magic of mixing colours to food. Yes, learning will surely take place in one or the other forms in each of these activities. Get them involved and you will, in turn, be involved with them, creating an unbreakable bond that will nurture them to take care of not only themselves but also of the little things around them as they grow.

I assure you as you get involved with your children you will start loving life again. The spark in their eyes when they see little things will add on to your spark. You will feel happier and energetic. The kids have the magic of turning pain to pleasure. However tough your day might be, sitting with your child, watching them or listening to them will take away all your worries, I bet.”

As parents our duty is not to raise kids with just excellent educational performance, we need children who are happy, who would love to live life and rejoice every little bit of happiness that comes across. When it comes to our mind that we want to start a diet plan, we often think of soups and salads. But can we really live on just soups and salads forever?

The term “Nutrition” is defined as the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth; eating one kind of diet on a regular basis certainly restricts our body to enjoy and extract the various wonderful nutrients given to us by the mother Earth. From the time we are born till the time we pass to the other life, we experience different stages of life and our nutritional needs shifts accordingly. When it comes to diet, some people believe in western medicine, some in eastern medicine and the others in functional medicine. 2. Pleasure:

We are human beings after the good things of life and as our first wiring, you strive to seek pleasure out of everything and it is more pleasurable when you have another person to run through life with in happiness, laughter and intimacy, find that one but not on pressure basis.

3. Procreation:

For the sake of continuity, you live your life hoping to give birth and the singular imagination of bringing forth your kind is an intense and huge part of our lives, find one who’s worth recreating life with and not just under any form of duress cause who you create life with matters most if you must live well.

4. Purpose:

In the bid to enjoy life and its great pleasures, being in a purposeful marriage will most likely give you a deeper reason to say I DO, finding the purpose to which you are getting married is one step to having it right. Do what it takes to find the purpose first before going on this long journey.

5. Parenting:

Our lives are but for impact, you want to live your lives having the responsibility to groom your kind and this isn’t just about having kids but goes deeper in managing the call to marriage and all that includes in it.

When you find the 5 Ps in another person to fight fair with you, to trust you to achieve your dreams and theirs in support of each other, ready to walk that path with you meaning you both want and desire the-same thing,then I think it’s time to call in the papers with your full chest to say I DO without pressures and pain. Are Coaching and Mentoring the same?

As both coaching and mentoring gain popularity, there is a corresponding rise in confusion about what they are and how they differ. This confusion sometimes results in people opting for the wrong resource, and so, as someone who wears both Coach and Mentor hats, here’s my two fils worth of explaining what each of these are and what role they play.

Coaching: I love the origin of the word Coach (which anyone who has heard me speak before will know well!). It stems from the word for the means of transport during the 1800s, which became slang at Oxford for a tutor who would help ‘carry’ a student through their exams, much like the vehicle did. The word “coaching” thus identified a process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be.

Personally, in my coaching practice I extensively use NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) which sounds terrifyingly like brainwashing, but simply means the practice of understanding how people organize their thinking and language and how this affects behaviour. And I love that it works on the premise that no one is broken and no one needs to be fixed. We all work with the choices we have, which we gave ourselves based on our learnings from past experiences. NLP is a powerful tool which allows us to go back in time to those experiences and change these learnings to create new choices that give us better outcomes than the ones we currently have. The basis of coaching is that the client has all the answers and resources they need within themselves already. They are just unable to access them in the right way. Which is where a coach comes in. A coach is a catalyst who facilitates the transformation in their client, without imposing their own knowledge or views on them.

Unlike a Consultant who will tell you how to address your problem and give you a readymade solution

based on their own expertise, a Coach will facilitate the process of you finding out for yourself what you really want, what you need to get it and an action plan to get there that resonates with your core values. Along the way you will identify the limiting beliefs and behaviours that are keeping you from achieving your goals and will convert them into enabling beliefs and behaviours that boost your efforts and help you get there faster. And because you came to these new choices by yourself, they have your complete buy-in and commitment.

What does the Coach gain?

Coaches have the honour of accompanying the client on their journey and the joy of playing a role in their transformation as they level up personally and professionally. The coach also gains new insights into human behaviour and responses, which helps them serve their clients better.

What does a coaching client need to have?

The client needs to genuinely want to embark on the coaching journey, and do so with an open mind and willing heart. Client’s benefit the most when they trust their coach and take accountability for their own role in the process, as the transformation takes place with the work done between sessions. An honest, open approach with respect for the coach and the process, along with wholehearted commitment will yield maximum results.

Mentoring: is the process through which you transfer the knowledge and insights you have gained to

someone less experienced, training and guiding them. In this relationship the Mentor advises, suggests and recommends courses of action based on the mentee’s desired outcome. And like any relationship, one that is mutually beneficial works best.

Globally there has been an uptick in the concept of Reverse Mentoring, where the more experienced colleague learns from the younger one. This has proven especially beneficial in helping older executives catch up with social media and digital marketing concepts and methodology. It also helps them stay current with newer schools of thought in their fields.

Mentoring enables mentees to navigate the best course towards their goal, avoiding the same pitfalls and obstacles their mentor faced, and giving them the benefit of experience based knowledge at a much earlier stage in their professional lives.

So, what do I gain as a Mentor?

Well, as a Mentor, I get to share my learnings and insights in a relatable context; help the mentee to avoid going through unnecessary bad experiences by sharing my learnings from them as a heads up; help the mentee become aware of their own strengths and capabilities and teach them how to use these by themselves. By mentoring I gain the satisfaction of knowing my life experiences are benefitting someone else and honing my leadership skills as well. It also fulfills my desire to give back to the community as I mentor those without access to the resources and tools that made our journeys so much easier.

What does the Mentee need to have?

A genuine desire to gain the maximum from the mentoring relationship and contribute to it as well; commitment; an open mind; humility; honesty and respect – for the mentor’s time and effort and for the relationship.

Understanding what you want and why you want it, is key to finding the best form of support to plotting your path to it. It could be coaching, mentoring or a combination of both, as long as your Mentor Coach clearly differentiates which hat they are wearing at the moment, so the process yields the best results.

Sometimes we may think we know ourselves best until we encounter a real-life lesson that reveals more about us than we knew existed. The noisy roar of the circumstance may seem so loud that if you are not intentional, you may succumb to the chaos and not be able to hear the truth from our Lord. When our hearts are troubled, we must remember that the circumstances of life do not have the power to turn us away from God. Because God’s character does not change, He is who He says He is. He does what He says He will do. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. When we face detours in life, at the worst of times, we can easily notice that our hearts become angry, demanding of God more than we had thought. So, at this point, it is important to listen at these intersections of life. We must open our hearts and examine ourselves. What do we speak about our circumstances and what do we speak about God? In the book of Numbers 23:19, the scripture says, ‘God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said,

18 and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good.’ When I look back at my life, I see how I wasted many years living a life of pity and feeling sorry for myself. I was too focused on what was happening in the different seasons of my life instead of reflecting on all the good. This is not how life should be. Like me, you may have been born into or grown up in a dysfunctional family. Maybe you are struggling with the activities of daily living, but that is not a reason to remain stuck in the ditch of self-pity. You might not even have any money and very little education. Naturally, it might seem that the future does not look very bright. Some people around you may discourage you and tell you there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I want you to know that God made no mistake when he created you. You were uniquely designed for success in your purpose. When you intentionally choose to align your life with your strengths, those innate qualities that you were lavishly gifted with by God flow forth. You tap into a level of grace and strength that empowers you to achieve things you could never accomplish on your own.

It is easy for our minds to become wrapped up in the chaos of everyday life. The good news is that the word of God speaks to 24 our problems. God’s word gives us truth that empowers us to break out of a rut of chaos and destruction, bringing us onto a new path that leads to life. ‘But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus’ (Phil 4:19). If you are breathing right now, he provides oxygen. If you can chew your food and your food will digest, he has provided the ability for you to do that. So, it’s not like He doesn’t start providing until you start getting deals or checks. He is providing oxygen right now. He is providing consciousness of mind right now. God always provides, and little by little, you go from faith to faith and glory to glory. You begin to think that if He gave me air, and if He gave me strength, He will supply all of my needs according to his riches and glory. As you are exposed to more of God’s

provisions, so you will learn to believe in Him for more. However, the real belief is not in the material things He provided but in Him and all He is. Matthew 6:33 says ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ He always provides. The issue with us is that our faith rests in what God has provided rather than resting in Him alone. Jesus did not just have faith; He said, “I have faith in God.” When my thinking changed, the way I viewed 2020 and its chaos changed too. I had a moment of solitude to repent. I realized that I couldn’t remember a time in my life where He didn’t provide. It might not have been through the mechanism that I wanted or wished it to be; it might not even have been to the degree that I would have liked, but He always provided. I remember a time in my life where I walked to school without shoes, but I had books to write in, a pen to use, and a school to attend. After school, there was very little to eat, but there was always something on the plate. He provided as much as he does now when I am negotiating deals for my books to be distributed in Dubai or getting opportunities to showcase my clothing line. It is the same God. The provisions change, but God is always the same. We do not have to ask God to provide because He is the provider. With this in mind, I changed the way I viewed things. My cup is overflowing with thanksgiving. My gratitude journal reminds me that money is not and will never be a problem for me. My God is an abundant provider who meets every need. Because I am blessed, I will always be a blessing toward others. That is just one of my feelings of gratitude because it speaks directly to a problem that made me worry for years. So, we are ‘attracted’ to shocking pink packing and sweet fruity scents! And as we are led by our olfactory senses we ‘blindly pick up the pretty shiny sweet smelling stuff and mesmerized we shell out the more cash for higher priced stuff!!!

Why is pink more expensive that blue?

Why are female centric products pink/pastel with sparkles and flowers more expensive?

Why are male centric products black, grey, dark blue and cheaper?

Why are unisex products packaged and priced different to women often a smaller quantity and less durable?

A careful observation while walking through the aisles of toy stores kids clothing in any mall you will notice that, in most cases, toys of the same brand and model intended for female cost more than for male, whether they are scooters, toys in general, or even board games.

Academic studies, government studies, and women carrying on their daily lives have ‘stumbled’ upon many products marketed toward women that cost more than nearly identical products targeted toward men—and far fewer examples of the opposite! Overall, products marketed to women cost 42% more! The ‘logic’ women need smaller versions of clothing, different cuts fashions so this cost somewhere between 30-50% more?

Having males in the house my household shopping list includes shaving creams, razors face creams and shampoos for men. By habit I look at prices (the financial planning training, keeping track of inflation!). I discovered long ago that the ‘pretty pink feminine’ version of razors, shaving-gels skincare products were a load of marketing gimmicks aimed at the ‘unconscious’ ‘blinkered’ shopper who operates like an automaton. Walk down the aisle pick up stuff why because we ‘always’ use the same stuff!

Gendered products are mostly stacked separately to further obscure the price difference. We are helpfully ‘efficiently’ led down the aisle for women’s products, men’s products etc. cleverly and carefully placed on shelves for our convenience and so we don’t ‘waste’ precious time looking for them!!

There are a lot of gender stereotypes in marketing and pricing all over the world , some I find totally discriminatory a recent example is Lebanon where 7 male members of the Lebanese cabinet announced a new list of 300 subsidized basic commodities as a response to the acute economic crisis in the country. As soon as this was approved and announced, women noticed that their most necessary needs had no place in the list, including sanitary pads and tampons which according to research has had a 320% increase in Lebanon. The price of a standard sanitary pad pack ranges between 13,000 and 34,000 Lebanese pounds, compared to its previous price of 3000 pounds. It is relevant to note that according to Wikipedia Since about 2004, many countries have abolished or reduced sales taxes for tampons and pads, including Kenya, Canada, India, Colombia, Australia, Germany and Rwanda. In India the government has completely exempted sanitary pads from GST by charging a 0% tax rate on the sale of sanitary pads By far the most insidious ‘taxing’ is on what every females needs very month sanitary towels and while governments may have reduced or removed taxes women are still being ‘penalized’ for being women! Ostensibly, the pressers used after washing are only for men’s shirts, so pressing women’s shirts with a whole other system costs more. Women’s shirts just don’t fit in their standard machine, apparently. My question is with innovation new products sprouting up 24/7 worldwide they haven’t gotten themselves an upgraded version for ironing/steam pressing women’s clothes? Really?

These discussion and deliberation have been going on for some time! The fact is that female centric stuff not only cost more but contain less of the product. Why do female consumers in many parts of the world pay more than their males counterparts be it shampoos, razors, soaps, creams, clothes, toys, games etc. This

While several people are still oblivious to the existence of ‘pink tax’ leading organizations local and international must come up with initiatives to spread awareness about the practices causing a hole in our pockets. Sad to realize that this price disparity accompanies girls and women during all stages of life. As adults, they also find more expensive prices for deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, sanitary pads among others.

Women, who generally earn less than men on average, pay a premium for items marketed to them simply because they aren’t aware of this so-called “pink” tax. For women who do not earn a salary they are at a bigger disadvantage, the repercussions of which is beyond the scope of this article

We the females don’t realize how badly we’re getting ripped off because we are so conditioned and hardly ever stop think, leave alone to question, Many of us are fortunate enough to buy female essentials but for a majority even buying sanitary pads is too expensive.

For all of us women now is the time to question. With social media paying an increasing role in our lives hashtags like #genderpricing, #pinktax and #gendertax, calling for an end to ‘luxury’ taxes on these products and gendered pricing in general, must be made more ‘influencing’.

Art imitates life, is an often-heard statement. Real life has formed the inspiration of many masterpieces in the past, and perhaps of those spectacular artworks to be seen in the future. Yet, imagine a life without challenges and miracles?

Imagine if the seas were all smooth, and there were never any storms nor any rescues, no highs, no lows, no crest of the waves… just endless plain sailing. Imagine a world without any contrast, perhaps a vacuum of banal existence. It almost sends a shiver down the spine, to think of a gravy of mediocre reality in the soup of life, devoid of the very ingredients that would make ‘life’ what it is. What will then be a source of inspiration for art?

I mull over this because these very thoughts interlink with the concept of the struggling artist. The one who faces life with all its contrasting colours of adversity and then triumphs. When one hears of prominent artists, there is sure to follow a history of great human resilience, endurance and gut wrenching tenacity, and we shall see the interlinks between art, challenges and the creation of the artists that have imprinted their names in the fate of art history, perhaps by art imitating life or one wonders whether it is the miracle of life?

Mark Rothko aptly declared “A painting is not a picture of an experience, but is the experience.” As a self-taught artist, Rothko knew adversity from a young age, facing fear, displacement, persecution, the death of his father, poverty, depression and the whirlwind of life’s toils and troubles. Rothko turned to philosophy in the form of Nietzsche being a great influence on his paintings for a certain time period. Rothko’s art

evolved over time, and he dabbled with various styles, forms and inspirations for his artworks. That is until, he came to focus on and became interested in, in his words, “... only in expressing basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on. And the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions.”

His paintings “Orange and Tan” and various titled “Untitled” are representative of his outlook, ultimately being definitive and echoing verbatim his stance “Silence is so accurate”

We have all heard of the infamous Mona Lisa and her cryptic smile, yet what of the artist behind this historical masterpiece? Art perhaps did not fully imitate the scope of life in the case of Leonardo Da Vinci, he was not solely an artist but a scientist and a theorist amongst his other talents. Da Vinci avidly observed the world around him, keeping notebooks and a plethora of papers inked with what he saw, thought and constructed ideas around. He left behind unfinished paintings and was known for not completing tasks, he also regarded himself as a ‘failure’ at times. Tom Bawden notes that “Da Vinci’s output involved long periods of procrastination interspersed with periods of intense creativity, often spurred by the presence of a more grounded collaborator.”

“It is incredible that Leonardo considered himself as someone who had failed in life,” observes Professor Marco Cantani, of King’s College London. “While impossible to make a post-mortem diagnosis for someone who lived 500 years ago, I am confident that ADHD is the most convincing and scientifically plausible hypothesis to explain Leonardo’s difficulty in finishing his works.”

would characterise the later era of his infamous artwork. He endured cataract surgery in the first half of the twentieth century, and after recovery he began to slash and destroy canvases from his pre-operation period. Sotheby notes that the French Prime Minister Georges Clémenceau told a journalist in 1927, “Monet would attack his canvases when he was angry. And his anger was born of a dissatisfaction with his work…Monet destroyed canvases in his quest for perfection.”

Vincent Van Gogh is yet another prominent artist who faced a great deal of adversity and yet his artwork prevailed above his struggles. On 28th January 1873, writing to Theo Van Gogh in a letter, Vincent Van Gogh stated ‘Be of good heart if things sometimes get difficult, everything will come right later on…” Thus, perhaps the art of adversity is a poignant journey through life, where miracles await at every corner and where a path of seemingly obstructive challenges gives way to an inspirational quest for meaning, whereby art imitates life and in doing so makes a masterpiece of us all.

The capillaries, are the smallest blood vessels that connect arteries and veins. In the process delivering oxygen and removing waste products, a transport system within us. Similarly, as the process of cleansing, purifying, delivering oxygen and nutrients occurs physically within us.

Like so, spiritually and with mindfulness we also require delivery within our hearts and minds of ethical values, and cleansing of all those waste products; inertia, procrastination, judgement and so on..that pollute our minds and soul.

With a humble approach, I share my reflective art borne of adversity; Serenity depicts the comfortable freedom one has in their own self. The ability to reflect internally and realise we may not always feel strong.

The liberty of authentic exploration, of almost experiencing everything as a curious observation, comfortable in knowing and not knowing. Ultimately discovering our own inner selves and being brave enough to have serenity in life, and learning to smile our brightest

This also connects us to the earth as being part of wider ecosystem where we we get rid of pollution and nourish the plants and wildlife that our planet requires to thrive. Similarly with the oceans too, perhaps we as humans can become the blood vessels of the environment.

Blood vessels contain constant movement, like ourselves we are constantly moving and struggling within ourselves, as well as the planet to be cleansed and nourished.. This is the meaning behind this painting titled ‘The Vessels of Life’

Anum Farooq is an award-winning autodidactic artist, and an alumna of Imperial College London. She has recently longlisted for the Digital Innovation in Art Award. Anum’s artwork is displayed on dedicated art channels and streamed across major platforms including Apple TV Plus, Samsung TV Plus, VIZIO, ViX, Google Play, Xumo and LG TV amongst others.

Anum is making a positive and valuable impact on society through her Mental Wellness podcasts released on Amazon Music, Spotify and iHeart Radio, which celebrate lived experiences from diverse backgrounds, as well as raising awareness on Mental Wellness.

AKLAT GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE DAY

Theme: Embracing the Knowledge Culture and Values

Philippines Partnership Circle and MBRL Mohammed Bin Rashid Library

The “AKLAT” Gift of Knowledge is anchored by its theme “Embracing the Knowledge Culture and Values”. AKLAT (meaning `’`Book” in Filipino language) is a community driven initiative of the Philippines Partnership Circle (Under the patronage of the Philippine Embassy in the UAE) led by the incumbent President, Ms. Marlene Murphy in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library (MBRL). AKLAT is centered on sharing of knowledge and strengthening communities through the power of reading that aims to promote tolerance, acceptance, and unity in diversity as well as greater cultural understanding amongst the more than 200 nationalities in the United Arab Emirates, the most loved second home to most expatriates.

Following on from the success of the 1st Edition of `AKLAT`’ Gift of Knowledge Day in 22nd June 2022, the 2nd Edition of “AKLAT “was held on 2nd of August 2022 at the Mohamed Bin Rashid Library in Dubai and, was honored by the presence of Dr. Mohamed Salem AlMazroei CEO of MBRL, Mr. David Hirsch, Advisor of MBRL, Ms. Fatma Fikree and MBRL Management Team. The Program has included a meaningful book signing activity and sharing of knowledge participated by more than 25 multinational UAE-Based Book Authors and Magazine Editors with over 90 books and Magazine copies gifted to MBRL. Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is the biggest Library in the Middle East Region that embodies a rich history of cultures and civilizations.

The AKLAT initiative is in itself a great story to tell about the positive impact it has brought to people, amazing multi-cultural experiences, realization of dreams, personal achievements, ambitions fulfilled, business successes and outstanding leadership, These are inspirations conveyed through the compelling contents of the books gifted to the library.

We celebrate with all the book authors and editors of the 1st Group and the 2nd Group for a well-deserved appreciation of their hard work and recognition of

their talent. Congratulations on finding a beautiful home for your books at the MBRL!

Reading books empowers us to empathize with other people. The reason why through AKLAT, we promote tolerance, acceptance and strength through diversity. The AKLAT initiative is to empower us to empathize with other people and we also know that education, knowledge, is very important and powerful. Education is something that we have to strive to acquire and our values guide us in all our way, along our way in learning. We don’t forget our culture and we don’t forget our values. Embracing knowledge is we strive about our intention and willingness to learn.

The MBRL has already attracted more than 40,000 visitors and members of different age groups and nationalities, who explored the Library’s facilities, services, and various sections. It is open from 9 am to 9 pm from Monday to Thursday and Saturday, while on Friday from 2 to 9 pm. It is closed on Sunday.
