For a good reason, St. Louisans are apt to tell residents of other cities about the wonders of the Saint Louis Zoo. The 90-acre menagerie is top-tier in terms of animal management, research, conservation and education, and admission to the public is free.

The zoo began as an offshoot of the St. Louis World’s Fair, which was held in Forest Park in 1904. From the first Bear Pits of the 1920s to present-day classrooms, auditoriums, animal nurseries, restaurants and ever-evolving exhibits, the Saint Louis Zoo is known as one of the city’s best resources and destinations.
In north St. Louis county, the building of a second zoo campus – Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park – is currently underway. The pastures and habitats in this location will partially support endangered species, with animals arriving as soon as this year. The park is expected to open publicly in 2027.
