The torrential rains in late July magnified every flaw in home landscape drainage and the community’s infrastructure.

If you experienced uncontrolled surface runoff, ponding, drain blockage or basement infiltration, it’s time to consider some serious adjustments. This is not the sexy, fun part of gardening, but it’s essential to protect the value of your home and property.

The first step in a water-management plan begins by visiting the garden during or shortly after a heavy rain. Don your galoshes and take a big umbrella to walk your property to see where water’s going. Avoid lightning-active storms, though.

Look for water sheeting off hard surfaces, gutters overshooting and water pooling and streaming. Take note of where the water leaves your property.

Here are some steps to help your planning: „ When replacing roof gutters, use oversize troughs to collect more water, which reduces damage to foundation plantings in heavy storms. „ Remove branches that overhang the roof, and use leaf guards to keep gutters debris-free. „ Track underground downspout drains to outfall spots, and design garden features to break up and slow the flow. Thick ground covers or gravel aprons work well. „ Check the soil levels around your foundation. Decades of adding mulch can raise the grade gradually and result in water damage to wooden sills. Garden beds should always slope away from the foundation. If basement infiltration is a problem, consult a professional. Check your sump pump for proper function several times a year. „ Where water sheets, put obstacles in its path to slow the flow rate. We added swales and outlets to our cobble-lined trail to bleed off rainfall in small bits. „ Employ a dry-stream to channel water into a retention basin designed for slow release. „ Where water pools, plan for a rain garden of water-loving plants. „ Layer plants with beds of trees, shrubs and ground covers to slow the speed of runoff. „ Reduce lawns and add more trees to help the whole community in many ways. Trees slow the rate of rain reaching the ground and absorb much of the water through their thirsty roots.

Making water-management upgrades can cost a fair amount, but as the intensity of local rainfall increases with climate change, take the precaution of preparing sooner rather than later. Missouri records show that heavy rains – more than 3 inches per day – are becoming more frequent statewide.

Much of Ladue drains into Deer Creek, a small stream that already has erosion issues. Stormwater improvements are being made at the township level, but you can help by evaluating your property’s water flow as it contributes to the total stream load. An ideal water-management system will keep as much water as possible on your own land by slowing the flow rate to allow deep absorption.
