The Careers Department works with the pupils throughout their time at LEH, and aims to help them to:
Develop knowledge of themselves: an understanding of their individual strengths and limitations, their skills, personal qualities, attitudes and values.
Develop knowledge and understanding of the opportunities that are open to them, both in school and the world outside, including trends in employment and higher education and training, and ways of handling careers information effectively.
Make considered choices in relation to courses of study at school and beyond, making clear the implications of choice on career aspirations.
The Careers Room is open at all times, including before and after lessons, and pupils are encouraged to use it for individual research and study.
Pupils can speak to a member of the Careers Team at any stage of their school career. They can either make an appointment or attend one of the “Drop In” sessions, which take place at 1.05 pm each day in the Careers Room.
All the Careers staff can help with general enquiries from students. However, specific areas of expertise are as follows:
Monday Mrs Hampstead
General Enquiries including UCAS and University Additional Tests
Tuesday Mrs Hampstead General Enquiries including UCAS and University Additional Tests
Wednesday Mrs Nicholls General Enquiries and UCAS
Thursday Miss Barnett US Universities and General Enquiries
Frida Mrs Hampstead General Enquiries including UCAS and University Additional Tests
Members of the Careers Team will be on hand throughout the evening and will be pleased to help with any questions from pupils or parents.
Complete the tasks below to get the most out of your Careers Evening:
1. List the Careers you know that you are interested in:
(i) (ii)
2a. Are the careers above represented at the Careers Evening (look through this programme) YES/NO
2b. If “no”, is there a similar career area covered at LEH that might be able to help you e.g. Digital Careers instead of ……………. or a Vet instead of Animal Science? Don’t forget that large companies recruit graduates from all degree subjects.
On the night, you can ask the LEH Careers Team for other ideas.
3. If “yes”, then for each of the careers you listed in question 1 above, write down two questions that you would like to ask the delegates you are planning to see, some suggestions are given on page 6, or you may have your own. Space has been left for you to note the answer.
My Questions: (i)
(ii)
Now go through the booklet and choose another career that you might be interested in –perhaps something you had not considered before. Write down two questions you would like to ask the delegate.
Alternative Career:
(i) Q:
(ii) Q:
The Careers Evening runs from 7.00pm until 9.00pm. You will need time to go round all the delegates you have noted and chat to your friends and so on.
For those interested in Finance, Consulting, Medicine, Dentistry, or Veterinary Science, we have organised two breakout sessions in the Theatre where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear from our experienced panel of delegates about potential careers and opportunities within your chosen field. The timings of the breakout sessions are listed below:
7.30 - 8.15pm: Medics/ Dentists/ Vets 8.15 – 9.00pm: Finance/Consulting
If you would like to attend either of these breakout sessions, you may want to include this in your schedule below so you can plan other appointments around it.
Otherwise, if you assume that you will have about 2 hours total, then you may want to block your time into 15-minute segments:
What is a typical day like? Is there such a thing?
What qualifications are needed for this career?
What A Levels did you take?
What qualities and personal skills are required for this career?
Is further study after university required?
What is the starting salary like? Is there good salary progression?
Do you have a work experience programme? Can you offer advice on this?
What could I be doing now to help better my chances?
What are the advantages and disadvantages, the “Pros” and “Cons” of this career?
Is this career “supportive” in terms of having a career break/ working from home/ flexible working?
Does this career offer opportunities for working or travelling abroad?
What do you most enjoy about your work?
Did you start out in this career area? What career path did you follow?

ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
ARCHITECT/ DIRECTOR
After leaving LEH in 2018, I went to study BA Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. Once I had completed my undergraduate studies, I worked at Pollard Thomas Edwards for my part one placement. I then studied MArch Architecture at University of Westminster, where I worked part time for ADP Architecture alongside my studies. Currently, I am working for Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands while preparing to undertake my Part 3 qualification.
Aseem Sheikh was the youngest graduate from the Welsh School of Architecture and established his own architectural firm at the age of 24. On 08.08.08 Aseem set up Base Associates, a niche architectural design studio that would specialise in identifying creative solutions to enhance the surrounding urban realm. Aseem chose Vauxhall as Base’s home as he saw the huge potential this part of London had.
Aseem is the Chairman of Vauxhall One (Business Improvement District) which has delivered and commissioned numerous works to improve the urban realm through stakeholder partnership. He also sits on the GLA Nine Elms Strategy Board, KOV Forum Board, Vauxhall City Farm and St Johns Church amongst other CSR roles. He is often published for his works on promoting urban beekeeping.
Aseem currently works with co-investors across the globe to acquire and develop real estate in London.
He was born and still resides in Kingston upon Thames with his wife and three daughters.
PART 2 ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
I completed my BSc in Environmental Science at McMaster University in Canada and gained work experience in the academic side of the field at Seoul National University in my penultimate year.
After this experience I decided to move into the field of architecture instead as it encompassed both design and science and was more aligned with my love of art and drawing that wasn’t a skill I could use within environmental science. I then attended the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London for 5 years, gaining my BA and MArch in Architecture.
* LEH ex-pupils
Since then I have worked in an architectural studio in London on mainly residential projects and recently in the last year joined Ridge and Partners in their Oxford and London office working on mainly Security and Defence projects in the UK and overseas. I am currently working towards my final Part 3 exam to become a fully qualified architect.
ASSISTANT COLLECTIONS REGISTRAR
I graduated in 2020 from the University of Warwick with a degree in History, and then did a Masters in Arts and Cultural Management, leading me to work in various museums, such as the Oxford Museum of Natural History, and the Ashmolean.
I currently work at the National Portrait Gallery as Assistant Collections Registrar, where I lead on display changeovers within the permanent galleries. I also recently graduated from the Warburg Institute with a Masters in Art History, Curatorship and Renaissance Culture.
AUTHOR AND TEACHER
AVIATION
SENIOR FIRST OFFICER
After working as a private clinical psychology assistant in a Psychiatric hospital, I became a qualified teacher of Psychology at a London school. I am also the author of a YA romantic fantasy book, The Light That Blinds Us, which became an instant bestseller and is being published worldwide. I document my author journey online on TikTok and Instagram where I have amassed thousands of followers and millions of likes.
Globally only 5% of commercial airline pilots are women. The day-to-day responsibility of flying passengers to their destination comprises of many different tasks. Adherence to operating procedures, checklists and instructions from air traffic control are some examples of the guidelines that must be followed. Managing cabin/ground crew, dealing with disruptive passengers and unsavoury weather are less predictable factors that require knowledge, good training and experience. Every six months there is a requirement to pass a proficiency check in a simulator so the learning never stops. Motivation, resilience and a positive attitude to continuous development are key.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a pilot. I was a member of Hampton School CCF during my time at LEH and participated in many flying activities. After leaving LEH in 2013, I worked at an airline for a few years in a customer services role and this enabled me to gain some invaluable experience of airline operations plus become acclimatised to
working irregular hours. I started my pilot training at CAE Oxford in 2016 and this intensive course was complete in 2017 together with my BSc in Air Transport Management. I was offered a position as a First Officer with Ryanair in 2018 where I gained a wealth of experience in short haul operations over 5 years. In 2023 I joined Virgin Atlantic and so far, loving the long-haul lifestyle!
Aviation is a competitive and potentially volatile industry. However becoming a professional pilot opens a rewarding career path - with of course spectacular views from the flight deck.
SENIOR BEHAVIOURAL SCIENTIST
I started the Government Social Research Fast Stream at the Department of Health and Social Care immediately after graduating from an undergraduate psychology degree at Cambridge in 2019. I did two fast stream roles- firstly commissioning research through the national institute of health research and then working as a statistician on adult social care data.
After 2 years working as a social researcher, I applied for a job as a behavioural scientist at the foreign office, where I’ve worked for 2 years now.
My job involves supporting policy makers with advice grounded in psychology and behavioural science evidence. I also train diplomats and development professionals in interpersonal skills. I travel to a lot of different embassies across the world with my job. I’ve so far been fortunate enough to travel to: Pakistan, Turkey, Dubai, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Mexico and France.
FAST STREAMER (GRADUATE PROGRAMME)
I studied English, Biology and Chemistry at A Level, then decided to pursue English, which I studied at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, so I stayed on and did a Master’s in Children’s Literature in the Cambridge Education Department, which was delightful! I then applied for a range of different jobs and was accepted onto the Civil Service Fast Stream. It’s a 3 year Graduate Scheme, and I worked in the Cabinet Office for a year overseeing large scale infrastructure projects, before moving to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, where I currently work on International Air Pollution policy.
SENIOR CONSULTANT
CONSULTANT
I graduated from Oxford in 2019, having studied Mathematics & Philosophy. I was then fortunate enough to get a role on the Procurement stream of the Civil Service Fast Stream and spent three years with the civil service across a number of departments, including the Cabinet Office and Ministry of Justice. After three years I moved to private sector consulting with Efficio and have most recently taken a project with a Private Equity client based in Indianapolis, US.
I studied Civil Engineering at university, specialising in hydrogen energy for my final-year dissertation. This experience gave me a strong foundation in the energy mix and the challenges of implementing new renewable technologies. I proceeded to move abroad to Moscow to become a private tutor for various high profile clients. I have come to realise how valuable and useful this experience was as I engage and manage stakeholder relationships as a consultant. Following this, I worked with a hydrogen association, which deepened my sector knowledge and provided broader insights into the energy landscape across the UK and Europe beyond hydrogen.
At Baringa, I was able to leverage these learnings in the wider energy sector, recognizing that many challenges were similar across different technologies. This knowledge proved valuable in my business development activities, including conference engagements and discussions with prospective clients. Additionally, my targeted work on emissions reduction in the mining sector further expanded my understanding of the requirements and hurdles involved in the energy transition.
JUNIOR DIGITAL CONSULTANT
Hi, I’m Mevi and I left LEH in 2021 after doing Geography, Maths and Economics for my A-Levels, to study Geography with Spatial Data Science for 3 years at King’s College London.
During my final year, I applied to numerous graduate schemes and am now on a Digital Graduate Scheme at Turner & Townsend working as a Junior Digital Consultant. Much of my current work involves acting as a business analyst, collaborating with clients and technical developers to produce digital solutions within the construction industry. We work with clients such as Heathrow, Thames Water and the Ministry of Defence among many others. Please feel free to ask any questions, and I hope I can be helpful!
EX-OPERATIONS CONSULTANT
After studying for an MSci in Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter, I moved to Sydney, Australia for two years to work in childcare, before returning home and working in high-end events. I then began my career in consultancy, spending two years at Newton Europe as an Operations Consultant. This means I was helping businesses and local governments provide their day-to-day services more efficiently. My favourite project was at a biscuit factory - trying to increase the number of biscuits the factory line could produce in a day! I’ve now stopped doing consulting and am looking to move into doing similar kind of work directly for the organisations involved. We’ll see where I end up next but whatever it is, I’m certain the skills and strategies I’ve learned in consulting will be invaluable.
PARTNER
Katya is a Partner in the Healthcare Services team at L.E.K. She works with healthcare providers (hospitals, diagnostic centres, dentists, fertility clinics, etc.) to help them grow over time. This could include launching new products or services, going into new countries, thinking about how to keep staff (e.g. doctors) happy, or looking for an investor. Katya founded and runs L.E.K.’s European Women’s Network, and is passionate about convincing women to get into consulting - and stay long-term. Katya studied English at undergrad, and holds an MBA from University of Chicago.
SENIOR CONSULTANT
I left LEH in 2019 and studied Economics at Cambridge.
Since university I have been working at Oliver Wyman for 2 years, focusing on the financial services sector including regulatory remediation, sustainability initiatives and governance reviews.
CONSULTANT ANALYST, QUALITATIVE RESEARCHER
I left LEH and studied Business Management with a Year in Industry at the University of Birmingham. I did my year in industry at CGI, an IT Consulting firm. While I gained valuable experience here, I realised that I needed a more people focused role. I finished my degree and took a year off to apply for grad schemes and go travelling.
I started my grad scheme as a Qualitative Researcher for PA Consulting. Across my 2.5 years here, I have worked for a variety of clients across a diverse range of sector, with a specific interest in Financial Services and High Tech and Platforms. My main responsibilities include facilitating in-depth interviews, focus groups and B2B workshops, in order to gain insights to inform strategy.
* LEH ex-pupils
HEADTEACHER
After leaving LEH in 1998, I read Geology and Geography at the University of Birmingham. After graduation, I joined Andersen as an Expatriate Tax Consultant and worked for them, and Deloitte, for 3 and a half years. During this time, I was part of the team training new graduates and found my passion for teaching. I completed my PGCE at South Bank University in 2006 and spent the next 17 years as a teacher in Hammersmith and Fulham. I have been a class teacher in Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 and led on teaching and learning, curriculum and was the special needs coordinator for 3 years.
I became Deputy Headteacher and then Head of School in this same school and was able to support colleagues and pupils across the year groups.
In September 2023, I joined Christ Church Surbiton as headteacher which is a privilege and joy. I am passionate about inclusive teaching and curriculum development and ensuring all children enjoy learning and achieve their potential. We are a Church of England School with pupils from Reception to Year 6 and our families live mainly in the Berrylands area of Surbiton.
We regularly support work experience students from local secondary schools and have trainee teachers in our school as future teachers are very important!

HEAD OF OPERATIONS
Ellie has spent nearly a decade building and scaling creative communities across Asia and London. Starting in Hong Kong’s emerging co-working scene, she progressed to launching and leading various innovative workspaces, creative hubs and music studios in London before taking the helm at Qube—London’s premier network of creator studios. As Head of Operations, she oversees 80+ purpose-built studios that empower a new generation of content creators across music, podcast, photography and content production.
I left LEH in 2017 (English, History of Art and Theatre Studies A Levels), had a gap year, and then went on to major in History of Art at St Andrews University. As I was studying during the pandemic, I was able to work remotely in London. I balanced work as a runner at my local film studios (Twickenham Film Studios) and my studies.
I left university with 1st Class Honours in 2022 and continued working at TFS in a more senior coordination role. Whilst here, I worked on Mission Impossible and the Whitney Houston film. I also took a bit of time out to work as a Production Assistant on a documentary produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. I left TFS and began work in Soho at various post houses where I worked on jobs for the BBC, Amazon, Netflix, Nat Geo and the National Theatre. A year ago, I became a freelancer to take a Post Production Coordinator role on Gladiator 2. I worked closely with the Director, all the lead talent and major creatives. As a keen triathlete and runner, I’ve diversified my network and recently moved into sports podcasting. I’m currently working with Paris Olympian Rose as her podcast producer on 5mileseasy.
TELEVISION DEVELOPMENT RESEARCHER
I studied Art History at university and wanted to pursue a career that was both creative and research-based. After graduating, I did some work experience at a television production company, where I discovered that the role allowed me to combine my various skill sets.
My job involves developing television formats and documentary ideas for channels in the UK and the US. It’s a collaborative and creative role, with a major part of my work being to generate topical ideas and interview people with amazing stories. I’ve learned the importance of keeping an open mind and embracing every opportunity in the industry, as it opens up different career paths and helps you meet interesting people along the way.
DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT PRODUCER
After leaving LEH, I studied English Literature and French at the University of Edinburgh before jumping into a job in PR. I always knew I wanted to work in documentary production, but wasn’t sure how to initially get my foot in the door.
After 2 years working in the PR industry, I quit my job and started working as a runner for a company called Curve Media, where I was lucky enough to learn everything from the ground up in TV Production.
I’ve since worked on a variation of different programmes, from medical to true-crime documentaries, and I now work as a Development Assistant Producer. Working in development is really varied, but essentially my job is to investigate and find stories that are fascinating enough to make it onto TV or an international streamer (Netflix/Hulu/ Disney+).
I’d love to chat and hear what sort of production you might be interested in, and hopefully I’ll be able to help and point you in the right direction!
AUDIT MANAGER
As a proud alumna, I left LEH in 2015 to study Accounting and Finance at University of Exeter. During a wonderful three years at uni, I completed a summer internship at BDO LLP in audit. After graduating, I joined the firm and undertook a three year training contract in order to obtain my ACA qualification, and become a chartered accountant.
I have been working at BDO for over 6 years now, and worked my way up to Audit Manager since qualifying in 2021. I work with a wide variety of clients, from large listed Corporate Groups, to charities and universities. I have thoroughly enjoyed my career thus far and feel my experience at LEH equipped me with a invaluable set of skills that have set me up for life!
FINANCE - ASSET MANAGEMENT
CLIENT PORTFOLIO MANAGER
After LEH, I studied Economics at UCL and pursued a career in Asset Management starting at BlackRock as a graduate. After 10 years, I moved to Robeco where I am now responsible in ensuring our investment products are fit for purpose for our clients all over the world; and that they’re tailored to their investment appetite. Outside of this, I am involved in several initiatives which aims to guide students in fulfilling their career ambitions and improving their self-confidence, and I am passionately committed to improving financial literacy amongst young women. In my spare time, I enjoy reading psychological thrillers and often compete in chess tournaments. I work in an industry that still lacks female representation so I am excited to share my journey and enthusiasm with you all.
Candida is a Managing Director and portfolio specialist on the International Equity team at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. She joined Morgan Stanley in August 2019 and has 25 years of industry experience.
Prior to joining the firm, she spent 11 years at BlackRock, most recently as Head of the UK Charities & Endowments business, having previously served as Head of EMEA Retail Marketing. This was preceded by roles at Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Mellon.
Candida holds an M.A. in Modern Languages from Cambridge University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. She was highly commended in the category of Fund Saleswoman of the Year in the Investment Week Women in Investment Awards 2021 and selected as one of Brummell’s Inspirational Women 2023 for pioneering positive change in their workplace. Candida leads retention efforts for MSIM EMEA’s Diversity Focus Committee and is a trustee for a girls’ educational foundation.
MANAGING DIRECTOR INVESTMENT SERVICES ASSOCIATE
Hi, I’m Jade and I currently work at Man Group (largest publicly traded hedge fund globally) as an Investment Services Associate on our quantitative Numeric and AHL engines.
Man has a strong history in public equities, focusing on bottom-up systematic stock selection processes based on fundamental, causal market relationships and reinforced by continuous research. My team performs a wide range of duties, including handling client queries and responding to DDQs/ RFPs. My pathway here has certainly been unique - I studied Biology, Psychology and Geography at A Level, before graduating from the University of Bristol with a non-financial degree.
My one piece of advice to those wanting to join the financial services industry is prioritise work experience and building a base of connections early on, as this helped me start my career in financial services following university.
I left LEH in 2016 to study Medicine at King’s College London, also completing my intercalated Bsc at Imperial College London. Having graduated in 2022, I completed my Foundation Training at William Harvey Hospital in Kent.
I am currently undertaking a locum year, while applying for Radiology specialty training, and am working across multiple hospital sites in London as a F3 doctor. I also run a Medicine/Dentistry/Vet Science University application preparation service in my spare time, Medic Master, where we routinely provide additional support to the LEH girls for interview and UCAT. More than happy to chat about a career as a doctor, studying Medicine at university and application advice!
After graduating from University College London in 2018, I began my medical career with two years of foundation training in South East London. These formative years provided me with diverse clinical experience across multiple rotations, including Psychiatry and Trauma & Orthopaedics, which shaped my approach to patient care and decision-making.
Currently training to become a General Practitioner, with my qualification anticipated this summer. My varied experiences across specialties have given me a well-rounded understanding of the healthcare landscape, which I would love to share with those seeking to have a career in healthcare. I can share practical advice, and offer insights into the challenges and rewards of working in this field.

FY1 FOUNDATION YEAR 1 DOCTOR
After LEH, I went to study Medicine at Bristol Medical School in 2018. In my 4th year, I went to Imperial College London to study Reproductive and Developmental Sciences BSc as an intercalated degree. In this I focused on women’s health and carried out maternal health research. I worked with professors and consultant obstetricians at Imperial to publish a paper on anaemia in twin pregnancy.
In 2024 I graduated from Bristol Medical School and have started my foundation training at UHS, Southampton General Hospital. So far I have completed a 4 month rotation in general medicine and am currently working on the general surgery wards. I love my job (mostly) and hope to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I am currently working on some more research in twin pregnancy with the team at Imperial.
ASSOCIATE DENTIST
My journey into becoming a dentist was not a conventional one, but shows that if you are determined to achieve something, you can. After applying for dentistry at A-levels but failing to achieve the A-Level grades necessary, I went on to achieve a first class degree in Biochemistry from Queen Mary University of London. I thoroughly enjoyed this degree as I always had a passion for science. However after coming out of university, I found it difficult to find a job which utilised my degree and involved more than sitting behind a desk. I knew that I still wanted to be a dentist and 4 years after my initial application, I got in!
I have now been working as a dentist for a year and half. At this stage of education, ensure you are involved in a few extra-curricular activities, preferably ones that show manual dexterity or leadership/ teamwork. Dental work experience can be boring as you can barely see/understand what is happening in the mouth. However it is more important to focus on the skills the dentist uses every day and if those are the types of skills you would like to be doing everyday e.g problem solving, team management and communication. I also wish I knew more about financing a second degree, which is something to consider if you follow my pathway.
Additionally, there are other options in healthcare available which require lower A-Level grades such as Osteopathy, but my best piece of advice in hindsight is focus on achieving your grades! It is always good to show that you are a well-rounded individual who has other interests than Dentistry. In my free time I enjoy playing squash, learning songs on the piano and baking.
(SPECIALTY REGISTRAR IN PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY)
I began my career with foundation training in general dental practice, including working in ITU during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by two years of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with placements at Eastman Dental Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and University College London Hospital in my first year, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, a major trauma centre, in my second.
I pursued further training in Paediatric Dentistry with a year at Royal London Hospital, followed by two years at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals and Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where I am now a Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry. I have combined my diverse clinical experiences to provide specialised care to children, especially those with additional needs and complex medical conditions.
Throughout my journey, I have gained a unique perspective on the varied and rewarding pathways within Dentistry. I am passionate about using my experience to guide and inspire pupils aspiring to careers in Dentistry. By sharing insights into the challenges, opportunities, and breadth of this profession, I hope to empower the next generation of dental professionals to pursue their ambitions.
I qualified in 2019 from King’s College London with Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honours. Following this, I completed my Foundation Training Year in Surrey, then Dental Core Training at Portsmouth Hospital in Restorative Dentistry. I also completed a one year Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry course with the award winning Dentist, Dr Chris Orr, and had direct 1 to 1 mentorship with an Eastman Restorative Professor.
Currently I am practicing General Dentistry with a special interest in Restorative and Cosmetic Dentistry in Hampton Court and Hanworth.
CONSULTANT IN ANAESTHESIA
Consultant Anaesthetist at St Mary’s Hospital, London, with subspecialty interests in Aortic Vascular, Major Trauma and Bariatric Surgery. Non-clinical roles include Lead for LiPA, (Imperial Portfolio Programme) Site Lead for St Mary’s, Lead for fellowships (clinical and management), trust grades and point of care testing. CONSULTANT GYNAECOLOGIST AND OBSTETRICIAN AND LEAD MEDICAL EXAMINER
VETERINARY SURGEON
I left LEH in 1995 and then had a gap year where I travelled in Asia. I attended Medical School both in Newcastle and then Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London for my clinical. I did an intercalated BSc in inflammatory bowel disease as part of my time at Medical School. I then started work as a Junior Doctor! I have been working in South East England in a variety of Hospitals. I became interested in the field of Obs and Gynae. I have taken time out of programme to develop areas of interest, including sexual assault, early pregnancy, minimal access surgery and gynae scanning. I spent 2 years working in Singapore - a great opportunity to experience another healthcare system. I have worked as a locum Consultant both at St George’s University Hospital in Tooting, and now at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill where I am now a Substantive Consultant.
After leaving LEH I attended Bristol University to study for my Veterinary degree. My first job was in a truly mixed rural practice which had both pros and cons. After this I worked in a busy small animal practice and studied for my postgraduate certificate in Small Animal Surgery and became an Advanced Practitioner. I now work part-time as I have two small children, with a great work-life balance.
VETERINARY SURGEON AND PRACTICE OWNER LAW
BARRISTER
I left LEH in 2013 to start at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) graduating as a veterinary surgeon in 2018. I then spent almost 6 months in South Africa working with a range of species from domestic dogs in outreach programs to antelope and rhinos. I started at Waltonon-Thames Vets4Pets in January 2019 in a new graduate scheme where I established myself as a vet before buying into the practice in 2022. I am currently studying a post graduate certificate in exotic animal medicine and surgery.
At school I did not know what career to pursue (although a careers test I took in Year 11 told me I’d make a good Teacher or Prison Officer). I took A-level English, Latin, French and History, and studied English at Oxford between 2013-16. After Uni, I interned at a boutique communications and political advisory consultancy for four months, before returning to my alma mater as LEH’s sports department’s graduate assistant. I decided at the end of that year that I would try and become a Barrister because I felt I had decent public speaking skills, and I liked the idea of self-employment.
* LEH ex-pupils
I obtained a full scholarship through an Inn of Court (Inner Temple) to do the law conversion course (GDL) full-time in 2017-8. Inner Temple then funded a full scholarship for my Bar Professional Training Course (now called the BVC) in 2018-19. In 2019 I obtained a pupillage (the Bar’s equivalent of a solicitor’s training contract) at my current Chambers, 3 Hare Court. Pupillage offers are deferred by a year, so I worked as a paralegal in 2019-20. Covid disrupted my pupillage, unfortunately; instead of observing barristers in Chambers and court, I was stuck in the far-less-glamorous setting of my freezing flat in Battersea watching video conferences and virtual hearings on my laptop. I survived, however, and qualified in November 2021. I practise mainly in commercial, insolvency, employment, property, and public/ constitutional law. My job is very interesting, but I may yet switch to teaching (or become a turnkey).
SENIOR COUNSEL, COMMERCIAL
During my English Literature degree at Durham University, I began exploring what a career in law might involve. At the time, the two career paths which appealed to me were Publishing or Law. During work experience at a publishing company I met their in-house lawyer and I realised that the two could be combined! I completed the GDL (law conversion course) and LPC before starting my training contract at Taylor Wessing LLP, a law firm which focuses on clients that were in the sectors that interested me most (media, publishing, consumer brands). After completing my training contract, I joined Conde Nast’s in-house Legal team where I have worked for 3 years. My role includes advising the company on advertising deals, magazine and club subscriptions, e-commerce and events.
SENIOR LEGAL COUNSEL
I recently joined Market Financial Solutions, a bespoke bridging and buy-to-let lender, as their Senior Legal Counsel. I previously spent 8 years in private practice working in two different US law firms and spent time working in Singapore practising aviation law and at HSBC on secondment in their special credit team.
PLANNING MANAGER
Come and have a chat if you’re interested in the world of Advertising or Marketing!
After leaving LEH, I studied Spanish and Business at the University of Edinburgh with a placement year working in Buenos Aires.
I loved the behavioural science, strategy and pitching behind my marketing modules and decided to apply at the big advertising agencies when I came back to London.
I got a job at EssenceMediacom, a large agency that provides big brands like Dell, Tesco, Coca Cola, Airbnb and more with media expertise from
TV, radio and billboard advertising to social, search and programmatic advertising. It’s an extremely busy, dynamic and fun place to work! I recently got a new job at a smaller independent agency, VCCP Media, where they work across lots of smaller brands and work closely with creative agencies to make the ads.
Happy to provide tips on universities, year abroad placements, where to look for work experience or answer any qs on the industry that I can!
ACCOUNT DIRECTOR
After leaving LEH and completing a degree in Human Geography at Exeter University, I’ve worked at advertising agencies for the past 8 years as an Account Director. My role includes running the end-to-end development of advertising campaigns - I’m the link between the client (the brand) and the advertising agency to make sure the project is run effectively, delivers against the brand’s objectives (e.g. driving sales) and goes live on time.
I have worked for brands including Mars, Three Mobile, LVMH and Sky across campaigns ranging from social media to big TV productions. I currently work at Sky Creative, developing the advertising campaigns for Sky Sports - at the moment this includes Formula 1 and the Premier League. I didn’t know much about advertising when I was at LEH, I was creative at school and loved art, but also enjoyed framing an argument in essays in History and Geography. The skills I use day-to-day in my job are managing relationships, leading projects, and understanding and representing the client’s needs.
ONLINE COORDINATOR
At LEH, I studied Psychology, Geography and Economics at A Level, and went on to study Psychology at Loughborough University for four years.
As part of my degree, I completed a placement year, working at Johnson & Johnson on the Marketing Team for Calpol. This gave me a great opportunity to learn, and made me realise that I wanted to go into Marketing / Business.
After I graduated in 2022, I applied to many different roles and and joined Estée Lauder Companies. I have worked across two brandsfirstly on Makeup at Too Faced Cosmetics for a year and a half, and now on Fragrance at Jo Malone London. I have been part of the Online Team, looking after the D2C Websites.
I have worked on many large campaigns, including Tom Hardy as our Men’s Ambassador for Cypress & Grapevine, and our Paddington collaboration for Orange Marmalade. I love working on the Online side of the business, setting up new product launches, offers, planning & updating website content, and seeing all the work I do translate into sales.
Since graduating from Durham University in 2015 with a degree in German and Italian, I have been working in the world of Formula 1 and sport sponsorship & events. With a love of languages, travel and F1, I was determined to pursue a career in a field that I was passionate about. After many hours trawling the internet and emailing various companies within the F1 sphere, I was lucky enough to land my first job.
After kick-starting my career in a specialist Formula 1 logistics agency, I joined Hackett London, a luxury menswear brand, where I worked in Brand Partnerships delivering 360 marketing campaigns for sporting partners including Aston Martin Racing, the British Army Polo team and Henley Royal Regatta.
I currently work at rEvolution, a sports marketing agency headquartered in Chicago with offices in London and Singapore. I am an Account Director, responsible for delivering the global F1 hospitality programme for Komatsu, a Japanese multinational construction and mining equipment company who are principal partner of Williams Racing.
Before rEvolution, I spent several years running F1 hospitality programmes for technology companies including title sponsor of the Aston Martin Formula 1 Team, Cognizant.
My working life is a revolving door of airports and race tracks. The days are long and the nights short but there are many ‘I can’t believe I am here’ moments that make it all worthwhile.
My advice to all LEH students, in particular those who are interested in a less mainstream industry, is to persevere and follow your passion. It might require more obstinacy and determination, but it is achievable!
MARKETING SUPERVISOR
After graduating with the class of 2017 from LEH, I attended University of Exeter where I studied Management with Marketing with a placement year at The Walt Disney Company.
Upon graduating, I spent 6 months with a creative agency working on the Disney account and then transitioned in November 2022 to join Disney as the Studios Marketing Brand Coordinator beginning work on Avatar: The Way of Water and other UK film marketing campaigns for Disney and Pixar brands.
Last year, in my new role as Studios Marketing Brand Supervisor I contributed to the planning and execution of the largest Family/ Animation titles of 2024, including Inside Out 2 (No. 1 animated film of all-time globally and #1 global, domestic and international release of the year), Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King as well as Disney+ titles such as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
EDITOR
SENIOR MARKETING AND BRAND MANAGER
I left LEH in 2018 with A Levels in English Literature, German, Latin and Greek, before going on to study Classics and German at Merton College, Oxford.
While at university, I worked for the German educational publisher, Westermann Gruppe, initially as an editorial intern and later as an author and copyeditor. After graduating from Oxford in 2022, I worked at a small independent publisher for a year before starting in the Hodder & Stoughton non-fiction editorial team in January 2024. I love working in publishing because it blends close analytical work with working with a range of interesting people: over the past year I have worked with Sir Chris Hoy, Clive Myrie, Lucy Worsley, Dan Snow and Michael Morpurgo, among other authors.
After LEH, I studied English at Durham University, and first pursued a career in journalism. I worked as a sub-editor and subsequently as a reporter on publishing trade magazine, The Bookseller, having completed a short magazine journalism course. I interviewed authors and industry professionals, covering stories across the publishing industry over my five years on the magazine.
I then moved into book publishing itself, and have worked at Pan Macmillan in a few different roles involving brand authors, consumer insight and marketing for the past 10+ years. I love the variety, and how people-centric it can be.
I believe in the importance of literacy and creativity for all, and my work has meant supporting our authors on several of their passion projects in this area. Additionally, I studied part-time to complete a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Central Saint Martins and Birkbeck, graduating in 2019.
If I think back to school and experiences that would have benefitted me ahead of starting my career, I’d say anything that helped me to practice using and developing my own voice would have been valuable - being able to articulate your thoughts and communicate who you are is always useful in a work environment. In terms of journalism and publishing specifically, keep reading and writing! Think about your own particular strengths, and discover the range of roles that exist in both industries - this might be the key to identifying the entry role that might work best for you.
PR AND COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT
I’ve worked in PR and Communications in the charity sector for nearly 25 years, with senior roles and consultancy work at many of the UK’s household names from Comic Relief to Macmillan Cancer Support and Shelter to the Refugee Council. I’ve worked on a huge variety of projects from major celebrity fundraising challenges across BBC radio and television with Comic Relief to campaigning to the Government for changes to housing policy with Shelter. I’ve had the opportunity to work with brilliant and fascinating people from Prime Ministers and Royalty to massive pop acts and film stars.
It’s incredibly rewarding to go to work every day knowing that you are making a small difference to people’s lives, whilst also loving the variety and creativity of the work. And starting my own consultancy eight years ago meant the exciting challenge of managing my own business.
If you are super creative, love to write, are great with people and thrive under pressure, PR and communications could be the perfect career for you. And if you are passionate about social justice and having a positive impact I would highly recommend working with charities and causes you care about.
CIVIL ENGINEER
I studied for a Civil Engineering Masters degree at Imperial College London from where I graduated in 2019. Before starting as an undergraduate I had been accepted onto the Institution of Civil Engineer’s Quest Scholarship scheme. This scholarship is carried out with an industry partner which for me was Costain, whom I still work for now.
Costain are a UK based Tier 1 Contractor. Each summer I had a paid placement up to twelve weeks long and had the opportunity to work on major infrastructure projects including Crossrail (now the Elizabeth Line), Hinkley Point C (nuclear power station) and the Thames Tideway Tunnel (also known as the super sewer).
Since graduating I have worked on three different sections of HS2 in London and am currently undertaking a 6-month design secondment.
Day-to-day I plan any upcoming works and manage the site engineers. I also coordinate any technical requirements for the works with the designers and in-house support functions such as the health and safety, quality, technical assurance, materials, temporary works and environmental teams, as well as regularly accompanying inspections of the works with the client and their independent inspectors. It is a really rewarding career when you see the project through from the initial drawings to the final completion of works on site.
I’m currently a postdoctoral researcher at University College London, doing research in Cosmology, the study of the origins and content of the Universe as a whole. So I’m helping to answer fundamental questions like ‘what are dark matter and dark energy?’. The work is very international and collaborative - for example I’m currently working with colleagues from across Europe in a big collaboration to analyse data from a space telescope called Euclid. Often this involves advanced machine learning and data science techniques like those used for large language models.
Before I became a researcher I had a completely different career in government operational research, using statistical and mathematical models to help solve complex problems in society. This was very rewarding because I contributed to policy decisions and service improvements affecting the whole population. It was also great to be able to move between government departments including the Treasury and Home Office. I particularly enjoyed working in and leading multi-disciplinary teams of people with many different professional backgrounds and experiences.
At school I enjoyed STEM subjects but wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to take. As my eventual career shows, studying maths and physics at A level and university is a very flexible choice (as well as being very interesting!). It gives you in-demand skills (including soft skills), and opens up a whole range of career options.

Speak to her if you are interested in: engineering, working in the automotive industry, working in data & AI, music & performance, or balancing an office based role with a creative outlet.
PRINCIPAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEER
Electronic (& electrical) engineering is a vast subject covering many different types of equipment, from design through production & use to final disassembly. Some fields are:-consumer (TV, mobiles, computers & tablets, toys), domestic (washing machines, microwave ovens, security devices, etc.), automotive (information & entertainment displays, engine control, etc.), aviation (cockpit displays, flight control, radar, communications, etc.), industrial (baggage handling, oil & gas rigs, factory control & robotics, instruments), power stations (gas, oil, wind & nuclear) & power distribution.
I deliberately did not specialise in any field (since specialities come into & fall out of fashion), with the result that I moved from one area of design to another without trouble, covering many of the areas above, as seen in a summary of my career below.
After graduating from Loughborough University with a degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering, I have previously worked on a wide range of projects, including:- radar and underwater systems with Marconi, writing handbooks for oil rig instrumentation, designing electronic modules with Analogue Devices, inventing & patenting a security system, designing passenger displays used at main airports, devising measuring equipment used by the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, designing radio equipment for London Underground, Royal Navy & Air-Traffic-Control use.
I now work for NGUK on the specifications, design, manufacture, installation & setting-to-work of ship-control systems.
l have been a Chartered Engineer with the IET (www.theiet.org) for over 35 years.
INTEGRATION ENGINEER
My career began at Ocado Group, where I completed a structured graduate scheme over 18 months, spending time in manufacturing, supply chain engineering, and Integration. Personally I wanted to do a graduate scheme as I was not 100% convinced which route in Engineering I wanted to go down. I contributed to some of their major ongoing projects, including the development of Ocado’s first in-house robot. As an Associate Integration Engineer, I helped integrate Ocado’s first seismic CFC design in Japan, and had projects in North America, and Spain.
Transitioning to KNP Logistics Group as Sustainability Manager, I looked at a company from an environmental and operational perspective. This involved developing company-wide sustainability practices, working closely with suppliers and clients to improve company impact. I led R&D initiatives, feasibility studies, and compliance efforts, promoting cultural shifts through the business.
Currently, as an Integration Engineer at Vanderlande Industries, I am a part of the delivery of integrated systems (specifically Airport Baggage Handling Systems) by managing validation tests and adherence to technical requirements and scope. I have just been a part of the successful replacement of the Controls IT System at Terminal 4 at London Heathrow Airport.
I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-level, went on to do Mechanical Engineering and Management at the University of Exeter and am currently doing a part-time MSc in Sustainability at Cranfield University.
STEM - GOVERNMENT SCIENCE ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
SENIOR RESEARCH ENGINEER
Born in Mombasa, Kenya. Educated in Leeds (1967-1978). After graduating in Physical Electronics in 1982, I joined the Department of Earth Sciences in the University of Cambridge as a Research Assistant. In 1986 I joined the marine geophysics group as a Research Associate where I developed the Cambridge Deep Active Source Electromagnetic Sounding system for the study of the structure and the dynamics of mid-ocean ridges.
I then went on to work as freelance design engineer and then Senior Software Design Engineer at H Tinsley and Co.
In 1998 I joined NPL, where I have been active in the development of products destined for national laboratories worldwide, these including cryogenic current comparators, electronics for Josephson junction arrays, electronics to stabilize reference lasers standards, THz detectors, standard capacitors, and automated inductive voltage dividers. Recently I have been involved in the development of NPL’s first Miniature Atomic Clock.
I am a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Physics (IOP) and holds a Chartered Physicist status. In my spare time I am the Chairman of the Home Counties Sub-Aqua Club and an assistant diving instructor.
OUTREACH MANAGER (PREVIOUSLY PHYSICIST)
Early on I wanted to be an artist, then changed my mind to go into science instead mid A levels. Whilst getting A level maths during a gap year, I worked as a botanist with the National Institute of Agricultural Botany. Then, armed with a degree in Applied Physics with Electronics I became an optical metrologist at NPL creating machines to measure light the way humans see it, and then into other reaches of the E-M spectrum (UV and Infrared). I spent lots of time talking about STEM so took on a role managing and presenting hundreds of talks and demos about STEM which gained me an award from the Queen.
OUTREACH SPECIALIST
Having studied for an MEng in Biomedical Engineering, I found my passion for working with young people. With these two in hand I have pursued a career in STEM outreach. I joined the NPL team over a year ago and have learned so much about metrology and the incredible work that has been done in NPLs 125 years.
SENIOR DELIVERY MANAGER
I went to school at a community college in Cambridgeshire. I went on to complete a MCHEM (Masters in Chemistry) at the University of Loughborough before doing a PhD whilst affiliated with Loughborough University at the National Physical Laboratory where I now work.
GRADUATE ENGINEER
I am a 23 year old engineering graduate currently working at NPL, having graduated with a masters in robotics from Sheffield University. I grew up locally, completing GCSE and A levels at Grey Court School/ Sixth Form in Richmond. I think I’d be able to provide useful insight into the many pathways students have into a career in science and engineering, hopefully my journey will also be relatable as I am from the area, I used to train with Thames Turbo at LEH all the time!
My background is in electronics and computing, specialising in radar, sonar and similar imaging technologies. I undertook an apprenticeship that involved part training and part industrial. I worked for major companies and consultancies before starting a design and development company offering leading-edge solutions to problems in related technology areas. I am now largely retired and spend some time mentoring and careers advising people in years 8-12 (pre-GCSE to final year A-level).
I am happy to discuss career-entry options, including techniques to make the best impression with potential employers, across a wide range of industries particularly, but not exclusively, STEM related.
STEM - LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT
TECHNICAL CONSULTANT
I am employed in the Logistics & Transport industry as a consultant, providing problem-solving advice within TfL. From school, with A Levels, I achieved a place on London Transport’s Engineering training scheme (Degree Apprenticeship). I studied Mechanical Engineering with Electronics and Control at The City University.
Early roles involved me with the building of new trains and the running of engineering test projects. I took responsibility for development projects in train communications, data and diagnostic systems, and I specified the control and automation system for the 1992 Central Line trains which became the genesis for equivalent systems on all subsequent trains.
Subsequently I worked as a programme manager for new business processes and operational reliability improvements, particularly creating effective techniques and roles for platform management and train despatch on the Victoria Line. My solutions were transferred to other lines and can be witnessed in use every day. I held a major leadership role as the head of the Underground’s scheduling, evolving improved ways of working, introducing new computers and incorporating technical improvements. These together made it faster and easier to introduce and change the Underground’s time and staff schedules and thus enabled upgrades to the Underground’s lines with more services and precision to the second.
Outside my career role I research transport history, and I volunteer to provide career and employment guidance in schools. I have Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
BUSINESS OWNER AND COFOUNDER, PROFESSOR
My name is Lev Sarkisov, and I am a Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester. Prior to joining Manchester, I was a Professor of Molecular Thermodynamics at the University of Edinburgh. At the University of Manchester, my research group leads the discovery of new materials for carbon capture. I have many years of experience in the higher education sector in both the US and the UK, including serving as Head of the Department at the University of Manchester (2020–2022). I am happy to share my insights with prospective students and their parents on the future of Chemical Engineering and career opportunities in the field. At this career fair, I am also representing The Ensamble Ltd (www.theensamble.com/), an educational start-up I co-founded. The Ensamble offers high school students a unique opportunity to participate in online research internships focused on coding and STEM subjects. These internships are supervised by practicing academics, allowing students to work on real, current scientific problems. As we seek to nurture future STEM leaders, the programme is selective, and all our graduates go on to pursue degrees at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
