Extra-Curricular Clubs Summer Term 2021

Welcome to LEH Junior School Extra-Curricular Clubs. Please encourage your daughter to take advantage of the many opportunities available to her. We hope that the extra-curricular clubs will help your daughter to develop and practise new skills, challenging and encouraging her to take risks. At the back of this booklet you will find a useful summary of all the clubs on offer, which are paid for and when they occur.

2

Bookings The booking for the Summer Term clubs is open from 6pm Tuesday 13th April to 6pm Thursday 15th April. The paid for and invitation only clubs will continue without the need for rebooking. However, please remember to book your daughter in to any of the other clubs she wishes to do. If you have been successful in booking a place online, you should assume your daughter will be attending that club from the week beginning Monday 19th April. Please note, if a club is full, there is a waiting list booking option, where you can register your interest. You can access SOCS by logging on to the Parent Portal – Parent Information – Extra Curricular Clubs or by clicking this link.

Paid clubs If your daughter is signed up to attend a club that requires half a term’s notice, she will be booked into that club for the whole year. If you wish to cancel a paid club, you need to give half a term’s notice, using the link ‘Let Us Know’ on the Parent Portal. If you have any enquiries, please send your email to jallden@lehs.org.uk.

These are beginner’s language clubs; activities include songs and games. Even if you did it last term, please feel free to sign up again.

Mindfulness Clubs Mindfulness clubs are run by our mindfulness teacher Julia Hennessey. Tuesday’s club is for U2 pupils to have some time to try out and extend what they learnt during their RS lessons in L2. The FI club on Wednesday will give them the opportunity to be introduced to mindfulness. At its most basic level, mindfulness equips you with the skill of training the attention by attending to and focusing on whatever is happening in any given moment. But mindfulness is also useful in helping us to address the kinds of worries that we all experience. In the case of young people, it can help them learn how to work skilfully with the stresses and strains of childhood and adolescence without being swept away by them. These coping skills then remain with them into adulthood. Mindfulness practice itself involves activities such as attention-training and meta-cognitive tasks that help children focus on the present moment and work skilfully with their thoughts and emotions. It doesn’t necessarily come easily; the mind often wanders at first. But with practice, children become more able to focus their attention. ‘We go into some depth about how the mind needs to be trained, a bit like a puppy. Our feedback shows that children love the neuroscience and finding out about how the brain works.’

Orchestra Orchestra is open to all who play an orchestral instrument from grade 1 and above. There are opportunities to work on a wide variety of musical pieces and learn how to work as a team. Pupils normally participate for the whole year. While clubs are in year group bubbles, Orchestra will rotate on a 4-week system. Wk 1 U1, Wk 2 F1, Wk 3 U2 and Wk 4 L2.

7

Sewing Club Sewing club is on Monday after school for L2 pupils who are beginners and those who have had some experience of sewing. Swimming Club Swimming club at lunch time will be for U1 pupils only. The PE staff closely and regularly monitor all the pupils in their swimming lessons and, on the basis of this, some pupils will be invited to the swimming training clubs. In the club, the pupils are prepared for competitions and invited to gain additional experience by attending swimming galas when they are ready. Swimming club will operate in year groups this term. Regular attendance and commitment are required to ensure invitations to galas. Once accepted into a club, pupils must realise that their access to additional training is dependent on their progress.

Musical Theatre Musical Theatre Club is an excellent opportunity for your daughter to explore her creativity through singing, dancing and acting. We have put on some lovely shows over the past couple of years including ‘Seussical Jr.’, ‘Annie’, ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Lion King’. In previous years, the club has only been for F1 and U1. However the club has recently opened up to L2 and U2 due to popular demand! Different year groups have their clubs on different days. U1 Musical Theatre runs at lunchtime and afterschool. With the lunchtime club, priority is given to pupils who travel on the school coach. We will therefore ask pupils who wish to do Musical Theatre in U1 to put their names on the waiting list. We will then allocate club places to pupils from the waiting list. This club runs for a year and requires half a term’s notice.

Music Tech Club M:Tech is a creative composition course in which children create exciting music using the latest music technologies. The course is available to children age 7 - 13 and is suitable for all levels of musical ability. In the Summer 2021 term the children will be working on Project ‘BOND ‘ Get ready for action! Join us on a top secret mission as we create special agent melodies and undercover beats. Remix your own epic soundtrack for everyone’s favourite spy! The name’s Bond... PROJECT BOND! A digital download is emailed directly to parents and a Certificate will be given out in assembly at the end of each term. This course is administered directly by M:Tech and to register your child’s interest please sign up online at www.mtechonline.co.uk or contact Pia, Rebecca or Ann on 01483 578114. Fees are £175 per term with weekly sessions of 30 minutes This ongoing club is booked via MTech and requires half a term’s notice to MTech for anyone who wishes to leave. MTech hold a waiting list. MTech will be provided for different year groups at different times.

Other Paid for clubs Tennis Club Tennis club runs in the Summer Term only. There are separate sessions for each year group. The numbers are limited due to the number of tennis courts available. The club is run by coaches from the Lensbury Club.

Yoga Club Yoga club is open to F1 pupils and runs on a Monday lunch time. Yoga for children has so many benefits. It helps to support positive mental health by teaching children to manage stress through healthy movement, body awareness, breathing techniques and meditation. By learning how to use their bodies in a healthy way each student, no matter what their ability, children develop a sense of belonging and become part of a healthy, noncompetitive group. This in turn helps to build concentration and increase confidence and positive self-image, in a safe and nurturing environment. Above all, we learn in a fun and creative space through games and individual challenges. This club is available to book on a termly basis.
