CAREERS EVENING 2024 TUESDAY 30 JANUARY 7PM - 8.30PM

INTRODUCTION TO THE 2024 CAREERS EVENING I am delighted to welcome pupils, parents and delegates to the 2024 Careers Evening for pupils from LEH, Hampton and partner schools. This year, we are delighted to welcome 60+ delegates across a wonderful range of career areas and well-known institutions, particularly represented by our ex-pupils and parents. The school is incredibly grateful to all the delegates who give up their time to come to LEH to encourage and inform the pupils about their career choices and future aspirations. Without their help, the evening simply could not take place, so on behalf of the pupils, thank you. The Careers Evening is aimed at the Upper Fifth and Sixth Form: it has been designed to be an informal event so that you can ask questions and find out the inside track on all

General Information on the LEH Careers Department The Careers Department works with the pupils throughout their time at LEH, and aims to help them to: • Develop knowledge of themselves: an understanding of their individual strengths and limitations, their skills, personal qualities, attitudes and values. • Develop knowledge and understanding of the opportunities that are open to them, both in school and the world outside, including trends in employment and higher education and training, and ways of handling careers information effectively. • Make considered choices in relation to courses of study at school and beyond, making clear the implications of choice on career aspirations. The Careers Room is open at all times, including before and after lessons, and pupils are encouraged to use it for individual research and study. Pupils can speak to a member of the Careers Team at any stage of their school career. They can either make an appointment or attend one of the “Drop In” sessions, which take place at 1.05 pm each day in the Careers Room. All the Careers staff can help with general enquiries from students. However, specific areas of expertise are as follows:

Preparation for the Careers Evening First step: write your name on the front of this Programme, then complete the tasks below to get the most out of your Careers Evening: 1.

List the Careers you know that you are interested in:

(i)

(ii)

2a. Are the careers above represented at the Careers Evening (look through this programme) YES/NO 2b. If “no”, is there a similar career area covered at LEH that might be able to help you e.g. Digital Careers instead of ……………. or a Vet instead of Animal Science? Don’t forget that large companies recruit graduates from all degree subjects. On the night, you can ask the LEH Careers Team for other ideas. 3. If “yes”, then for each of the careers you listed in question 1 above, write down two questions that you would like to ask the delegates you are planning to see, some suggestions are given on page 6, or you may have your own. Space has been left for you to note the answer. My Questions: (i) (ii) Now go through the booklet and choose another career that you might be interested in – perhaps something you had not considered before. Write down two questions you would like to ask the delegate. Alternative Career: (i)

Planning Your Time The Careers Evening runs from 7pm until 9pm. You will need time to go round all the delegates you have noted and chat to your friends and so on. For those interested in Law, Medicine, Dentistry, or Veterinary Science, we have organised two breakout sessions in the Theatre where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear from our experienced panel of delegates about potential careers and opportunities within your chosen field. The timings of the breakout sessions are listed below: 7.30 - 8.00pm: Medics/ Dentists/ Vets

8.15 - 8.45pm: Law

If you would like to attend either of these breakout sessions, you may want to include this in your schedule below so you can plan other appointments around it. Otherwise, if you assume that you will have about 2 hours total, then you may want to block your time into 15-minute segments: Time 7.00 – 7.15

7.15 – 7.30

7.30 – 7.45

7.45 – 8.00

8.45 – 9.00

Activity

Some possible questions for delegates: • What is a typical day like? Is there such a thing? • What qualifications are needed for this career? • What A Levels did you take? • What qualities and personal skills are required for this career? • Is further study after university required? • What is the starting salary like? Is there good salary progression? • Do you have a work experience programme? Can you offer advice on this? • What could I be doing now to help better my chances? • What are the advantages and disadvantages, the “Pros” and “Cons” of this career? • Is this career “supportive” towards women e.g. in terms of having a career break? • Does this career offer opportunities for working or travelling abroad? • What do you most enjoy about your work? • Did you start out in this career area? What career path did you follow?

ARCHITECTURE PHOEBE LAWRIE * - ADP ARCHITECTURE Since leaving LEH, I have studied BA (Hons) Architecture at Oxford Brookes University before completing a placement at Pollard Thomas Edwards in London. Currently, I am studying for my March Architecture degree at University of Westminster, alongside working for ADP Architects part-time. ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT

ASEEM SHEIKH - BASE ASSOCIATES Aseem Sheikh was the youngest graduate from the Welsh School of Architecture and established his own architectural firm at the age of 24. On 08.08.08 Aseem set up Base Associates, a niche architectural design studio that would specialise in identifying creative solutions to enhance the surrounding urban realm. Aseem chose Vauxhall as Base’s home as he saw the huge potential this part of London had. ARCHITECT/ DIRECTOR

Aseem is the Chairman of Vauxhall One (Business Improvement District) which has delivered and commissioned numerous works to improve the urban realm through stakeholder partnership. He also sits on the GLA Nine Elms Strategy Board, KOV Forum Board, Vauxhall City Farm and St Johns Church amongst other CSR roles. He is often published for his works on promoting urban beekeeping. Aseem currently works with co-investors across the globe to acquire and develop real estate in London. He was born and still resides in Kingston upon Thames with his wife and three daughters.

ARTS YASMIN ANWER * - NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY ASSISTANT COLLECTIONS REGISTRAR

After completing my undergraduate degree in History from the University of Warwick in 2020, and my first postgraduate degree in Arts and Cultural Management from King’s College London in 2021, I worked at the Ashmolean Museum and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, in a variety of roles, including Exhibitions Assistant. After this, I moved on to the National Portrait Gallery in February 2023, first as Volunteer Coordinator, and now within the Collections department.

* LEH ex-pupils

As Assistant Collections Registrar, my role is multi-faceted, primarily working in the care and management of the Collection and on loan to the Gallery. As well as many other things, my primary responsibility is managing the Gallery’s changing displays programme, assisting with planning, logistics, and on-site management of regular object rotations. Alongside this, I am also in the process of finishing my second postgraduate degree in Art History, Curatorship, and Renaissance Culture at the Warburg Institute.

ARTS - FASHION ANNABELLE BARTON - JCA LONDON FASHION ACADEMY OUTREACH OFFICER

I am a recent masters graduate at JCA London Fashion Academy so can offer a personal take on what it is like to be a student at the academy but also how to work in the creative industries.

ARTS - MEDIA BELLA MORTIMER * - WOODCUT MEDIA LTD TELEVISION DEVELOPMENT INTERN

I work in television researching and developing new, unscripted television ideas for broadcasters both in the UK and US. After graduating school, I studied History of Art at Edinburgh University, graduating with a First in 2021. My degree significantly helped with my research and writing skills and improved my ability to generate new and engaging ideas. I then went on to do some work experience at a television company called Little Gem which was my first insight into the television industry. I was offered a job and worked there for six months before I began working at Woodcut Media. My role involves research, designing pitches and constantly coming up with new ideas. I am also involved in casting, conducting interviews and talking to contributors.

AMY FELLER * - CURVE MEDIA

SENIOR DOCUMENTARY RESEARCHER

After taking a part-time course at the NFTS alongside my job in PR, which was in Factual Production and Development, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in factual tv and documentaries. I started as a runner for a tv production company, saying yes to as much as I could, trying to get a wide range of experience. I’m now in the process of getting into the editorial (creative) side of making programmes, as well as being able to go out on interview and casting shoots. In terms of relevant experience that’s worth accumulating, I think the best thing to do can be to watch as much programming as you can, and start to look at it with an editorial eye. What do you like watching? What made that documentary so fascinating to you? What would you like to see more of that you feel is missing? Be interested, be curious, and if you can, maybe even pick up a camera and try filming...anything!

DELEGATE PROFILES ALEXANDRA CRAWSHAW * - BBC MEDIA ACTION PROJECT TEAM ASSISTANT

Currently, Alexandra supports projects at BBC Media Action as part of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Team. BBC Media Action believes in the power of media and communication to do good, supporting the independent media essential to democracy and development. Prior, Alexandra worked in TV Production. She started at Studio Lambert’s London Production Office and worked on some of their shows, namely running on ‘The Traitors US’ and as Production Secretary on ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’, then at Lime Pictures. Alongside this, Alexandra writes and produces independent projects. The short film ‘Over Her Shoulder’ is in the festival circuit and has received awards, such ‘Honourable Mention’ at the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival November 2023 and ‘Best Short Film’ at the Paradise Film Festival September 2023 so far. Recently, an excerpt from her play in development ‘Vanjka Vstanjka’ was selected for a reading at The Barons Court Theatre. She looks forward to all there may be ahead!

AVIATION GRACE MCKELLAR * - TUI For A-Levels, I studied History of Art, Spanish and Latin for A-Level and then went on to study History of Art at The University of Warwick between 2015 and 2018.

AIRLINE PILOT

I started flight training in 2018 where the first six months were intense ground school studying for various theoretical exams. Unfortunately due to flight instructor shortages and the Covid-19 pandemic, the flying phase of my training was significantly delayed and I didn’t receive my commercial pilot’s licence until March 2021. Since then, I was a postman at Royal Mail for 6 months during a time when there were very few jobs in aviation due to the slow recovery of the industry after the pandemic. After that, I worked as a Commercial Jet Charter Broker for 2 years creating tailored and bespoke travel solutions for clients in the automotive, sports, entertainment and corporate industry, to name a few, and I had the opportunity to travel the world meeting with and supporting my clients. This role reinforced my love for aviation and I gained an invaluable insight to the breadth of the industry, learning about various roles and operations that I had not yet been exposed to. I recently started my dream role as an airline pilot in December 2023 and am currently studying and training before flying passengers around the world!

* LEH ex-pupils

GEORGINA MCBARNETTE * - VIRGIN ATLANTIC

AIRLINE PILOT - SENIOR FIRST OFFICER

Globally only 5% of commercial airline pilots are women. The responsibility of flying passengers to their destinations comprises of many different tasks. Adherence to operating procedures, checklists and instructions from air traffic control are some examples of the guidelines that must be followed. Managing cabin/ground crew, dealing with disruptive passengers and unsavoury weather are less predictable factors requiring problem solving, experience & good knowledge. Every 6 months there is a requirement to pass a proficiency check in a flight simulator so the learning never stops. Motivation, resilience and a positive attitude to continuous professional development are key for this career. Georgina knew from a young age that she wanted to be a pilot. She was a member of Hampton School CCF during her time at LEH and participated in many flying activities. After leaving LEH in 2013, Georgina worked at Gatwick Airport for a few years in a customer service role enabling her to gain invaluable experience of airline operations plus exposure to shift work. She began her pilot training at CAE Oxford in 2016 and this intensive course was complete in 2017 together with a BSc in Air Transport Management. Georgina became a First Officer with Ryanair in 2018 where she gained a wealth of experience in short-haul operations over 5 years. In 2023, Georgina joined Virgin Atlantic and is so far, loving the long-haul lifestyle! Aviation is a competitive and potentially volatile industry. However, becoming a professional pilot opens a rewarding career path - with of course spectacular views from the flight deck.

CHARITY, POLITICS AND COMMUNICATIONS HANNAH FOX * - TOGETHER WITH REFUGEES My working life has been spent campaigning for political change or raising funds by generating positive coverage in the media about charities or causes – whether on the radio, television, films, magazines or newspapers. It is also by ensuring interesting content is shared on social media – particularly on accounts of influential people with lots of followers. PR AND COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT

For instance, I have worked at Comic Relief to raise money with Radio 1 and celebrities taking part in physical challenges, raised funds to save bears in cages in Vietnam with an interview with Judi Dench in Hello Magazine, and arranged for Gary Lineker to post on X (formerly Twitter) in support of Together With Refugees.

- Campaigning with Together With Refugees at the Houses of Parliament. This can be exciting – having spent time with celebrities, prime

ministers, royalty and journalists (one highlight was meeting Larry the Number 10 Downing Street cat!). But it is also difficult when dealing with tough issues and meeting people with heartbreaking stories. With 24/7 media cycles and rapidly changing social media trends, this work can be high pressure and demanding – something anyone thinking about this career needs to consider.

DELEGATE PROFILES But if you enjoy a fast pace of work, are level headed under pressure, love writing, and are super creative, this might be the profession for you! I am very grateful to have this career, my passion for my work and the pride I feel in being a tiny part of social change. I look forward to meeting you and finding out whether you might love it too.

CIVIL SERVICE ELLY LAMBOURN * - PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES, HM PRISON AND PROBATION SERVICES SPECIALIST TREATMENT MANAGER

I did a BSc in Psychology and Criminology before doing a masters in Forensic Psychology. I then worked for the probation service at an Approved Premise with high risk men recently released from custody for violent or sexual offending. From there I became an Interventions Facilitator delivering psychological offending behaviour programmes in youth and adult male prisons. I now treatment manage a specialist programme for men who have committed sexual offences in a local category C prison.

CIVIL SERVICE - DIGITAL, DATA AND TECHNOLOGY FREYA KROL * - FOREIGN, COMMONWEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (FCDO)

LEAD USER RESEARCHER

I came from a humanities background, having studied English Literature, Maths and History for A-Level, and graduating from Durham Univeristy with a History degree in 2020. I joined the Civil Service in 2021 via the Digital Data and Technology Fast Stream. I completed placements as a data engineer at the Department for International Trade (Now Department for Business and Trade), and then as a user researcher at the Department for Education, where I worked on the Get into Teaching services to inspire and attract prospective teachers. After a brief stint as a service designer at the Foreign Office, I have now taken up a permanent role as lead user reseacher within the Information and Digital Directorate, leading research activities to advance our diplomatic and development objectives.

CIVIL SERVICE - PUBLIC RELATIONS SIMRAH BASIT * - DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT PRESS OFFICER

I’ve worked in Civil Service communications at the Department for Transport for a year, working on high-profile news stories such as rail strikes and the roll-out of electric vehicles. It’s a fast-paced environment but one where you must also consider longer-term strategy and the message that the government wants to get across to the public. Before this, I was at a PR agency after graduating university, where I worked with clients supporting international energy and sustainability communications.

* LEH ex-pupils

CONSULTING MADDIE CHAMBERS * - 6POINT6 After leaving LEH I took a year out to volunteer in South America before studying Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. During my undergraduate degree I completed a dissertation looking at the identification and mitigation of gender bias in recruitment algorithms. Before my final year I completed a product management summer internship at Publicis Sapient. After graduating this summer, I am now a technology consulting graduate working in a delivery role at 6point6. Although I am new to my job I have completed many graduate JUNIOR TECH CONSULTANT and internship applications and interviews and can speak on my experiences as a woman studying an engineering speciality.

JAN NICHOLLS - ACCENTURE

MANAGING DIRECTOR

At school, I did Maths, Physics and German at A-level. I always loved technology and went on to university to complete a Masters degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering. When I finished university, I knew I wanted to work with technology and help businesses use it to do exciting things. I joined Accenture in 2001 and am still there - enjoying exciting new tech like GenAI, robotics, augmented reality and helping large businesses use them to become even better.

GOPIKA JEM - ACCENTURE I read Economics and Philosophy at LSE for my undergraduate and really enjoyed both the quantitative and critical thinking and communication part of my degree, leading me to accept an offer in Consulting upon graduation. I’ve been working in the Consulting industry for 10 years now across multiple industries - FMCG, Oil&Gas and Telecommunications. I now specialise in helping Manufacturing Companies build digital factories of the future. I love the variety and MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT the constantly changing and intellectually challenging nature of the work I do and happy to answer any questions you might have about the industry.

ALICE O’MALLEY * - CAPGEMINI INVENT

ANALYTICS & AI CONSULTANT

I was a pupil at LEH between 2008 and 2015, studying Biology, German, Latin and Maths in my final couple of years. After LEH I attended Durham University where I studied Biology and Psychology within Natural Sciences. Whilst thinking about which graduate schemes to apply to, I wasn’t sure on a specific career that I wanted to go into, however I did know that I enjoyed academic work that involved problem-solving, collaboration with others and analytical thinking. This led me to apply to a variety of graduate roles, and I ended up choosing a graduate scheme at Philips Healthcare where I worked for three and a half years.

DELEGATE PROFILES Healthcare is an area I’m passionate about and the scheme at Philips allowed me to rotate across marketing, public relations and internal consulting roles, so it was the ideal opportunity at that stage in my career. After enjoying the internal consulting role at Philips, I decided I wanted to broaden my experience within consulting and try my hand at a consultancy. This led me to apply for a Healthcare Analytics and AI consulting role at Capgemini Invent, where I now work. My advice to those thinking about their career is to focus on where your interests lie and the skills you would like to develop, rather than becoming too focused on a specific career too early on. From my experience, this will lead you to find a career you are interested in and passionate about organically.

KATYA ZUBAREVA - L.E.K. CONSULTING PARTNER

Katya is a Partner in the Healthcare Services team at L.E.K.. She works with healthcare providers (hospitals, diagnostic centres, dentists, fertility clinics, etc.) to help them grow over time. This could include launching new products or services, going into new countries, thinking about how to keep staff (e.g. doctors) happy, or looking for an investor. Katya founded and runs L.E.K.’s European Women’s Network, and is passionate about convincing women to get into consulting - and stay long-term. Katya studied English at undergrad, and holds an MBA from University of Chicago.

ERICA WALLACE * - L.E.K. CONSULTING

LIFE SCIENCES CONSULTANT

I left LEH in 2017, and went onto study Biological Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. For A-level I took Biology, Chemistry and Maths; I chose Natural Sciences so that I could continue studying a range of subjects and ended up specialising in biochemistry, pharmacology and psychology. While at university, I realised that I did not want a career based in a laboratory and so applied for various consulting internships for the summer after my penultimate year. I did an internship at L.E.K. Consulting in their life sciences team, which enabled me to combine the project solving and social aspect of strategy consulting with my interest in the life sciences industry. I really enjoyed both the work and the company culture, so when they offered me a job for after I graduated I accepted. Since starting full-time at L.E.K. in March 2021 I’ve worked on nearly 30 different projects for pharmaceutical, biotech and private equity clients, including a landscape assessment for psychedelics in psychiatric indications and an opportunity assessment for a COVID-19 booster vaccine. I have progressed from Associate, to Associate Consultant, to Consultant, with increasing responsibility and people management at each level. This month I have started a secondment, while still employed by L.E.K. I will be working for a biotech company for six months to project manage the launch of a new drug for ovarian cancer in Europe. I will then be taking a break from consulting to do an MBA at INSEAD (based in France), starting in August.

* LEH ex-pupils

FATIMA MAMMADOVA * - MONITOR DELOITTE STRATEGY ANALYST

I studied maths with economics at UCL before going on to complete my masters in sustainability at Imperial College. Following this, I started my journey in consulting as a strategy analyst on the graduate scheme at Monitor Deloitte. I currently sit in the Sustainability and Climate strategy team, working with clients in both public and private sectors.

EMILIA MUNNS * - PA CONSULTING MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT Entered the PA graduate scheme in the 2022 cohort which is a rotation

scheme in three departments. I’ve completed rotations in people and change, delivery and systems insights and solutions. Within this I have worked with broadly public sector clients including DESNZ, the home office and national highways.

EMILY RHODES * - PA CONSULTING

MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT

Having graduated from University with a degree in Economics in 2021, I have since joined the PA Consulting Graduate Scheme working as a Management Consultant. Whilst on the scheme I have worked with a range of clients in different industries, such as airports, EV charging startups and gaming companies looking at how to digitalise and transform their customer experience. Consulting has allowed me to work on lot’s of different exciting projects early on in my career, with big topics such as AI and Accessibility.

DELEGATE PROFILES EDUCATION MARY READ - LEH

MATHEMATICS TEACHER

I didn’t always know that I wanted to be a teacher. Whilst studying Mathematics at Durham, I thought I would enjoy working in the financial sector (and find it financially rewarding!). After a summer internship at UBS Warburg, I soon realised that it was not the career for me. It struck me that I needed a job that included Mathematics, involved working with children and gave me the freedom to be myself; teaching would suit me perfectly. After a year out in South America, I started my PGCE in Oxford, then taught at a school in Huntingdon before moving to London to teach in a large comprehensive school in Lewisham. I was soon promoted to Head of Department and, after 5 years there, I came to LEH as Head of Department. Now that I have a young family, teaching has given me the flexibility to work part-time, doing a job that I love and seeing more of my children. In teaching, every day is different; something makes me laugh; my brain is challenged; I can be creative; I engage with young people and see the immediate impact I am having; I work with dedicated colleagues; and every day I do something that I love. Teaching is a challenging yet hugely rewarding career. (I will also admit that the long holidays are a huge perk!)

FINANCE CHRIS MEEHAN - BNP PARIBAS I currently work for a French Investment Bank called BNP Paribas and am head of a global team of Product Developers that design, create and commercialise digital trading systems. These applications are used by the bank’s clients to buy and sell Currencies, Equities, Bonds and many other financial instruments. Investment Banks are typically large global businesses that, as an

GLOBAL HEAD OF PRODUCT employee, allow you to interact on a daily basis with colleagues DEVELOPMENT and clients from all around the world and deal with a wide range of

different professionals such as Economists, Lawyers, IT Developers, Business Analysts, Graphic Designers, Quantitative Analysts, Traders and Sales people. Although most of the Traders or Salespeople at the bank do have some sort of Economics or STEM background there are many different types of roles within banks so people do join the graduate and internship schemes from all sorts of academic backgrounds. Having a good grasp of technology and data concepts has become increasingly essential though. I studied ‘A’ levels in Physics, Chemistry and Maths and then did a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Information Technology. I worked as an IT developer happily writing computer code in the City for many years before progressing into more managerial and business focussed roles. Jobs in banking can be fast paced and you deal with some big challenges but they can be rewarding especially if you like problem solving, are quick thinking and creative.

FINANCE - ACCOUNTING ELLIE VAN KLAVEREN * - PwC I left LEH in 2012 and went to study History and French at Cardiff University. I spent a year studying translation at the University of Geneva as part of my degree. After graduating from Cardiff in 2016, I joined the PwC Cardiff office in September 2016 as an associate in the audit line of service. During this time I have worked on audits and completed my ACA exams with the firm and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in September 2019. I worked on a range of clients in South MANAGER, AUDIT LEARNING Wales from small manufacturers to a listed bakery. I still used my & DESIGN CONSULTANT French, working on clients with French entities and with clients based out of our PwC Paris office. Financial audit provides an independent opinion to shareholders of companies that the financial statements produced by managers fairly represent the company’s performance. An audit provides comfort to the stakeholders that the financial statements are true, fair and an accurate reflection of the state of the company. I have been with PwC for just over seven years now and have had the opportunity to move roles within the firm. I now work within our Audit Learning and Design team creating internal training courses for our audit line of service. This allows me to combine my interest in the technical side of accounting and audit with my passion for learning design. The role has allowed me to meet a number of senior stakeholders within the firm and continue to expand my network.

INVESTMENT SERVICES ANALYST

Hi, I’m Jade and I currently work at Man Group (largest hedge fund globally) as an investment services analyst. I am also studying towards my CFA Level 1 qualification. My previous roles after university involved a 3 month contract at TP ICAP (interdealer broker) and then an associate position in the Treasury team of a Fintech company, specialising in cash deposits. My one piece of advice to those wanting to join the financial services industry is prioritise work experience and building a base of connections early on. CONSULTANT TRAUMA & VASCULAR ANAESTHETIST

I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in Anaesthetics but at the time I needed to have experience in Emergency medicine and other specialty areas. I am very pleased thst this was the case, as it meant that I now have a greater understanding of perioperative care of patients particularly in the vulnerable groups of elderly people. I came back to St. Mary’s and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as a Consultant Anaesthetist in 2014 and have now been a full-time Consultant for a decade. TRAINEE CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST (FINAL YEAR)

The work I do is extremely demanding but in turn hugely satisfying. I also have a significant role in Medical Education Leadership as a Simulation Innovation Lead and therefore am driven by new technologies in supporting important training nationally and internationally. I did an intercalated BSc in inflammatory bowel disease as part of my time at Medical School. I then started work as a Junior Doctor! I have been working in South East England in a variety of Hospitals. I became interested in the field of Obs and Gynae. I have taken time out of programme to develop areas of interest, including sexual assault, early pregnancy, minimal access surgery and gynae scanning. I spent 2 years working in Singapore - a great opportunity to experience another healthcare system. I have worked as a locum Consultant both at St George’s University Hospital in Tooting, and now at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill where I am now a Substantive Consultant.

DR. PIP VANHINSBERGH * - NHS AND MENOPAUSE CARE

NHS GP AND PRIVATE MENOPAUSE SPECIALIST

I left LEH in 2003 having done A-levels in Chemistry, Biology, Geography and AS German. I completed a BMedSci and BMBS (medical degree) at Nottingham University. I stayed in Nottingham to do my foundation training then having decided that twice yearly exams for the last 15 years was enough, decided to take a year out and did a few months of travelling before living and working in New Zealand for a year. During my degree and this year, I had the opportunity to work in the very different health systems of St Lucia and the Philippines. This was exciting and valuable to gain a very different perspective and experience to what I could learn in the UK. Even New Zealand was very much like being thrown in the deep end! I came back to the UK to complete my GP training having had a career bias towards women’s health from the jobs I had chosen as a junior doctor. Despite loving obstetrics and gynaecology I chose general practice as a compromise for hopefully a better life balance. I continue to progress my interest in women’s health with a separate career as a menopause specialist which is a rapidly evolving area and incredibly rewarding.

Following this, she spent two years working in oral and Maxillofacial surgery - one year at University College London Hospital, Eastman Dental Hospital and Great Ormond Street and a further year at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. She then began working in Paediatric Dentistry at Royal London Hospital for a year before her current role working at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

DR. NORA MAHDI * - NHS

DENTIST

My journey into becoming a dentist was not a conventional one, but shows that if you are determined to achieve something, you can. After applying for dentistry at A-levels but failing to achieve the A-level grades necessary, I went on to achieve a first class degree in Biochemistry from Queen Mary University of London. I thoroughly enjoyed this degree as I always had a passion for science. However after coming out of university, I found it difficult to find a job which utilised my degree and involved more than sitting behind a desk. I knew that I still wanted to be a dentist and 4 years after my initial application, I got in! As a qualified dentist I am now doing my training year and enjoying constantly learning every day. At this stage of education, ensure you are involved in a few extra-curricular activities, preferably ones that show manual dexterity or leadership/teamwork. Dental work experience can be boring as you can barely see/understand what is happening in the mouth. However it is more important to focus on the skills the dentist uses every day and if those are the types of skills you would like to be doing everyday eg problem solving, team management and communication. I also wish I knew more about financing a second degree, which is something to consider if you follow my pathway. Additionally, there are other options in healthcare available which require lower A level grades such as osteopathy, but my best piece of advice in hindsight is focus on achieving your grades! In my free time I enjoy playing squash, learning songs on the piano and baking.

HM FORCES - ROYAL AIR FORCE SERGEANT DOUG HARVEY - ROYAL AIR FORCE CAREERS ENGAGEMENT SNCO

I joined the RAF in 1989 as a Ground support Engineer, serving in various locations in the UK and around the world including Europe, The Falkland Islands and the Middle East. I left the RAF in 2011 and rejoined in 2016 as a TEST SNCO looking after various CCF(RAF) units around the South East. I have recently joined the Careers Engagement team and I believe I can offer the pupils an insight into joining the RAF.

LAW KATHARINE BAILEY * - 3 HARE COURT CHAMBERS

BARRISTER

At school I did not know what career to pursue (although a careers test I took in Year 11 told me I’d make a good Teacher or Prison Officer). I took A-level English, Latin, French and History, and studied English at Oxford between 2013-6. After Uni, I interned at a boutique communications and political advisory consultancy for four months, before returning to my alma mater as LEH’s sports department’s graduate assistant. I decided at the end of that year that I would try and become a Barrister because I felt I had decent public speaking skills, and I liked the idea of self-employment. I obtained a full scholarship through an Inn of Court (Inner Temple) to do the law conversion course (GDL) full-time in 2017-8. Inner Temple then funded a full scholarship for my Bar Professional Training Course (now called the BVC) in 2018-9. In 2019 I obtained a pupillage (the Bar’s equivalent of a solicitor’s training contract) at my current Chambers, 3 Hare Court. Pupillage offers are deferred by a year, so I worked as a paralegal in 2019-20. Covid disrupted my pupillage, unfortunately; instead of observing barristers in Chambers and court, I was stuck in the far-lessglamorous setting of my freezing flat in Battersea watching video conferences and virtual hearings on my laptop. I survived, however, and qualified in November 2021. I practise mainly in commercial, insolvency, employment, property, and public/constitutional law. My job is very interesting, but I may yet switch to teaching (or become a turnkey).

EMILY FORMBY KC * - 39 ESSEX CHAMBERS I am a barrister, King’s Counsel, and a part-time Judge of criminal (crown court) and civil (county court) jurisdiction. I work from Chambers, 39 Essex Chambers, based in London and my field is personal injury and clinical negligence, working for both claimants and defendants.

BARRISTER

I took History, English and Geography A levels and after a year off read History at Oxford. I then worked for a couple of years and took the law conversion and bar school.

DELEGATE PROFILES AMY FULLERTON * - FORSTERS LLP I am a Senior Associate at Forsters LLP specialising in Family Law. As a family lawyer I advise clients on a full range of family law matters including pre and post nuptial agreements, separation arrangements, matters involving children, financial issues and divorce for clients both in the UK and overseas. SENIOR ASSOCIATE

I studied Philosophy and Sociology at Leeds University and then went on to complete my Graduate Diploma in Law. I started my career as a paralegal, working in a number of different areas of law, across a number of firms both here and abroad, before commencing my training contract (some 4 years later!). Perseverance really is key to succeeding in this very competitive career, but it is absolutely worth it.

ALICE JEFFERIES * - MEWBURN ELLIS LLP

TRAINEE PATENT ATTORNEY (BIOTECH)

I left LEH in 2016 and took a Gap Year before studying for a BSc in Biochemistry and a Master’s in Immunology at Imperial College London. I was certain that I wanted to pursue a career in science, but I didn’t want to work in a lab. I also wanted to have good career progression, which can be tricky to come across in scientific professions. I decided I was interested in pursuing a career in Intellectual Property law around second year of my undergrad, and I completed two “mini-pupillages” with IP barristers that summer. After connecting with various people in the profession, I decided that the patent attorney route was for me because it was the route that involved the most science and seemed to offer the best quality of life (in my opinion!). Now two years in, I am on my way to becoming a qualified attorney, and I use my degree everyday. Our clients range from huge multinational pharmaceutical companies, to university spin-outs across the globe. A highlight so far has been working with a Nobel Prize winner!

OLIVIA PERRY * - CONDÈ NAST SENIOR COUNSEL, COMMERCIAL

During my English Literature degree at Durham University, I began exploring what a career in law might involve. At the time, the two career paths which appealed to me were Publishing or Law. During work experience at a publishing company I met their in-house lawyer and I realised that the two could be combined! I completed the GDL (law conversion course) and LPC before starting my training contract at Taylor Wessing LLP, a law firm which focuses on clients that were in the sectors that interested me most (media, publishing, consumer brands). After completing my training contract, I joined Conde Nast’s in-house Legal team where I have worked for 3 years. My role includes advising the company on advertising deals, magazine and club subscriptions, e-commerce and events.

MARKETING - ONLINE AVANI MEHTA * - ESTÈE LAUDER COMPANIES INC.

ONLINE ASSISTANT TOO FACED

Hi, I’m Avani - At A Levels I studied Psychology, Geography and Economics, and I was unsure what I wanted to study and go on to do as my career. I left LEH in 2018 and went to study Psychology at Loughborough University for four years. As part of my degree, I completed a placement year, working at Johnson & Johnson on the Marketing Team for Calpol. This gave me a great opportunity to learn, and made me realise that I want to go into Marketing. In my final year, I began applying for many graduate schemes, however I found that they’re extremely competitive and have a number of different stages & tests. I graduated in 2022, and then applied to multiple Marketing roles in the Beauty & Skincare Industry. Last year, I joined Too Faced as Online Assistant, and in my role I work on the toofaced.co.uk website, as well as across Retailers (such as Boots, Sephora, ASOS and Look Fantastic). It’s been great to learn more about the Online side of the business, working on multiple marketing campaigns, new product launches, and seeing the work I do go live on site.

MEDIA - PUBLISHING LUCY BUXTON * - HODDER & STOUGHTON, HACHETTE

ASSISTANT EDITOR

I studied English Literature, German, Latin and Classical Greek at A Level in 2018 and went on to study Classics and German at Merton College, Oxford, graduating with Double First Class Honours in 2022. Studying a modern language afforded me the opportunity to spend a year abroad, and so I took this as a chance to gain some valuable work experience in a sector I had been curious about: publishing. I worked as an Editorial Intern at Westermann Gruppe, one of Germany’s largest educational publishers (i.e. textbooks), and there, I learnt the nuts and bolts of editorial processes and realised I really loved it! I aspired to work in trade publishing (i.e. the books you find in Waterstones) and so, upon graduation, I applied for a whole host of roles. Almost all were met with rejection without interview, but a small independent publisher specialising in illustrated children’s non-fiction, What on Earth Publishing, offered me the position of Editorial Assistant. In this role, I furthered my editorial expertise and went on to project manage a few titles, before moving to a much bigger publisher at the beginning of 2024.

PUBLIC RELATIONS - EVENTS KATHARINE MORGAN * - GOODWOOD When I left school, and even university, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I did have some strong ideas about what I didn’t want to do! I tried a few things – working at the CHANEL boutique on New Bond Street, for a content company and finally interning for a travel PR company for a few weeks. PR MANAGER MOTORSPORT EVENTS & GOODWOOD

While there, I was successful in my application for the role of Ballet Press Administrator at the Royal Opera House (ROH). I was at the ROH for just over three years, progressing to Communications Coordinator. I worked throughout the Covid-19 pandemic as the ROH delivered its From Our House To Your House programme and in early 2021, following

a new-found interest in motorsport, applied for the role of Press Officer at Goodwood in West Sussex. Although taking up a new role in Events PR coming out of the pandemic was certainly daunting, it’s been a fantastic experience. In just under three years the motorsport PR team has grown and I now head up a team of three as the PR Manager. As well as looking after Goodwood’s three headline motorsport events, the Members’ Meeting, Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival, in 2023 we added a new event, Goodwoof – the ultimate dog’s day out, to our remit. I would always encourage you to make the most of any opportunities available to you; sometimes you just don’t know how the cumulative experiences will come together to equip you for a role.

PUBLIC RELATIONS KATIE BLAKE * - KATIE BLAKE PR

FOUNDER

You only know and can grow by what you see and are influenced by. That’s one of the reasons I fell into PR and also a ‘watch out’ for students. I grew up from the age of 8 years old helping my mum in the summer holidays when she ran her own PR agency. My dad also worked in Marketing and growing up, there were no other careers that were promoted to me so to speak. I also wasn’t curious, and I think that’s why this Careers Evening is so important, to help present myriad of opportunities to students early on to help them be more aware and make better informed choices. I worked in two PR agencies across 11 years, and founded my own PR Consulting firm in 2023. I always knew I would run my own business one day, and have not looked back! I would like to make students more aware that the conventional route to a career is not right for everyone, and that the right career isn’t going to come to you, you have to take risks, be open minded, create opportunities and be willing to fail in order to learn and succeed.

PUBLIC SECTOR POLICE OFFICER

HANNAH BARTHOLOMEW * - METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE After leaving LEH in 2017, I went to the University of Bath where I undertook a degree in Psychology. My degree included a placement year, which I spent working at a management consultancy. This organisation was working with a police service at the time, and I had the opportunity to complete a ‘Ridealong’ in the back of a police car, which sparked my interest in policing as a career. I joined the Met via Police Now’s Graduate Leadership Programme in 2021, and spent the first two years of my career as a uniformed officer in South London (on a neighbourhood team). I began my detective training in August 2023 and am currently working on a safeguarding unit investigating domestic abuse.

STEM - AEROSPACE ENGINEERING ABDULLAH BIN EHSAN - BOEING GLOBAL SERVICES I have always been fascinated about aircrafts with millions of questions about them. Since school I have been keen and passionate to know how aircrafts are designed, built, maintained and flown! Having the element of curiosity and asking questions is the key to many unlocked opportunities which can be practised at any and all stages of career. Thanks to career fairs and mentoring at my time, Post GCSE’s I had completed my aeronautical engineering diploma qualification DESIGN AND CERTIFICATION from Kingston college. I continued with Bachelors of engineering in ENGINEER Aerospace engineering at Kingston university and then pursued my master degree which was also in Aerospace engineering from Queen Mary university. Upon completion of my academic phase, I had started working as a technical service engineer for various global airlines by dealing with aircraft component repairs, failure reasons and operation in service. I am now the design and certification engineer for commercial aircrafts at Boeing UK.

STEM - CIVIL ENGINEERING HARRIET HALY * - COSTAIN CIVIL ENGINEER

I studied for a Civil Engineering Masters degree at Imperial College London from where I graduated in 2019. Before starting as an undergraduate I had been accepted onto the Institution of Civil Engineer’s Quest Scholarship scheme. This scholarship is also carried out with an industry partner which for me was Costain. Costain are a UK based Tier 1 Contractor. Each summer I had a paid placement up to twelve weeks long and had the opportunity to work on major infrastructure projects including Crossrail (now the Elizabeth Line), Hinkley Point C (a nuclear power station) and the Thames Tideway Tunnel (also known as the super sewer). Upon gradation I was offered a place on Costain’s two-year graduate scheme. Since graduating I have worked on two sections of HS2 in Euston and am currently working on an HS2 tunnelling project in north-west London where I have been for two years. Day-to-day I set out the planned work for each shift and manage the site engineers. I also coordinate any requirements for the works with the designers and in-house support functions such as the health and safety, quality, technical assurance, materials, temporary works and environmental teams, as well as regularly accompanying inspections of the works with the client and their independent inspectors. In a site role, the best feeling of achievement is seeing the drawings transformed into something physical right in front of you.

STEM -ENGINEERING ROWAN PARKER-JERVIS - BAE SYSTEMS I am an Enterprise Architect (Engineer) at BAE Systems - Pitch Technologies, prior to this I completed a PhD in Physics at the National Physical Laboratory and Uni of Leeds. Alongside this I am an education officer for the IET and also a Captain in the British Army Reserve.

STEM - ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING DAVID SWEETMAN - NORTHROP GRUMMAN UNITED KINGDOM

PRINCIPAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEER

Electronic (& electrical) engineering is a vast subject covering many different types of equipment, from design through production & use to final disassembly. Some fields are:-consumer (TV, mobiles, computers & tablets, toys), domestic (washing machines, microwave ovens, security devices, etc.), automotive (information & entertainment displays, engine control, etc.), aviation (cockpit displays, flight control, radar, communications, etc.), industrial (baggage handling, oil & gas rigs, factory control & robotics, instruments), power stations (gas, oil, wind & nuclear) & power distribution. I deliberately did not specialise in any field (since specialities come into & fall out of fashion), with the result that I moved from one area of design to another without trouble, covering many of the areas above, as seen in a summary of my career below. After graduating from Loughborough University with a degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering, I have previously worked on a wide range of projects, including:- radar and underwater systems with Marconi, writing handbooks for oil rig instrumentation, designing electronic modules with Analogue Devices, inventing & patenting a security system, designing passenger displays used at main airports, devising measuring equipment used by the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, designing radio equipment for London Underground, Royal Navy & Air-Traffic-Control use. I now work for NGUK on the specifications, design, manufacture, installation & setting-to-work of ship-control systems. l have been a Chartered Engineer with the IET (www.theiet.org) for over 35 years.

After graduating in Physical Electronics in 1982, I joined the Department of Earth Sciences in the University of Cambridge as a Research Assistant. In 1986 I joined the marine geophysics group as a Research Associate where I developed the Cambridge Deep Active Source Electromagnetic Sounding system for the study of the structure and the dynamics of mid-ocean ridges. I then went on to work as freelance design engineer and then Senior Software Design Engineer at H Tinsley and Co. In 1998 I joined NPL, where I have been active in the development of products destined for national laboratories worldwide, these including cryogenic current comparators, electronics for Josephson junction arrays, electronics to stabilize reference lasers standards, THz detectors, standard capacitors, and automated inductive voltage dividers. Recently I have been involved in the development of NPL’s first Miniature Atomic Clock. I am a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Physics (IOP) and holds a Chartered Physicist status. In my spare time I am the Chairman of the Home Counties Sub-Aqua Club and an assistant diving instructor.

STEM - EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ANDREW HANSON MBE - NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORATORY (NPL)

OUTREACH MANAGER (AND EX-SCIENTIST)

My A levels were a mix of arts and sciences. Graduation in Applied Physics led me to become an Optical Metrologist (measuring colour and light) at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). I progressed through roles and projects such as ‘traceable visual display spectroradiometry’, ‘cat shininess measurement’, and ‘UV source calibration’. This experience including national and international committee work, blended with artistic pursuits like rock band management, enabled my current role as an Outreach Manager – helping many NPL staff tell the world about what they do. To you at this stage of your education, my experience-based advice is: (1) don’t stress about the future – you don’t need everything fixed up at any time really and opportunities you aren’t expecting will make great things happen, (2) deepen interest and knowledge in what you are ‘into’; (3) widen what you are into but don’t waste time, (4) broaden your network – ‘lucky’ people are often people with many contacts well beyond their family and close friends and finally (5) never feel you are an impostor - be aware that your unique perspective brings great value into whatever you do. Good luck!

STEM - SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ELLIE BEAMES - NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORATORY (NPL) I completed my BSc in Physics in 2022 at the University of Portsmouth. I completed my dissertation on using information entropy to find mutations in the Covid-19 genome, and used this information to predict where in the genome future mutations would occur. During my time here, I was also elected President of the student-led Physics society. It was a privilege to work with and lead so many incredible scientists at a fundamental point in their lives. RESEARCH SCIENTIST

I completed my MSc in Medical Physics in 2023 at the University of Surrey. I chose to focus on medical physics because it has so many practical applications - my favourite part of the course was being able to see how physics is used to improve the lives of so many people. If you’ve ever had an X-Ray, or an MRI, you can thank medical physicists for that. If you know someone who’s gone through radiotherapy treatment, or been treated with nuclear medicine, that’s us too. I’m currently a research scientist on the graduate programme at the National Physical Laboratory. I work in Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics; it’s really exciting to work in something I haven’t encountered much during my studies. Every day is a learning curve, and I’m loving it. I’ve benefited from a wide-reaching Physics background, and I’m excited to share my love for it.

ANISSA PATEL - NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORATORY (NPL) GRADUATE SCIENTIST (BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES)

Studied BSc Biological Sciences with Professional Placement (undertaken as a Student Scientist in the Product Integrity and Sterilisation team at Abbott Diabetes Care) at the University of Exeter where I achieved a First class degree with Honours in July 2023. I am currently on the graduate scheme at NPL in the Chemical and Biological Sciences department where I work in Biometrology and will rotate through 2 other teams.

STEM - RESEARCH / GEOGRAPHY ISABELLE CROZIER-MORRIS * - ORDNANCE SURVEY

INNOVATION AND RESEARCH SCIENTIST

I studied at LEH from 2006-2017 and had a real passion for Geography and the outdoors. I studied Geography, Maths and Economics at A-Level. During Year 13 I had a week’s work experience at Ordnance Survey, where I was given hands-on experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS). After that, my dream was to work there! I completed a BSc Geography degree from the University of Exeter, graduating in 2020. I then transitioned straight into Ordnance Survey’s 2-year graduate scheme. Here I completed four 6-month placements, rotating around the business. Two of my placements were in the Earth Observation (EO) team, where I had the opportunity to attend multiple conferences which included international travel. My work was varied and combined technical aspects such as GIS, as well as project management.

* LEH ex-pupils

At the end of the graduate scheme, September 2022, I was promoted to an Innovation and Research Scientist in the EO team, where I have been ever since. My role is technical and problem solving focussed. I am constantly working with new, emerging technology, and building my knowledge of the Earth Observation industry. Hosting workshops and meeting with customers has allowed me to balance technical with customer-facing work. I recently had the opportunity to attend COP28 with the UK Space Agency and Space4Climate, after being successful in my application for a volunteer role. This was an incredible experience, and I am happy to chat about this, and anything else about careers in Geography/Space/ Tech!

STEM - TRANSPORT EDMUND MULLIGAN - TRANSPORT FOR LONDON

SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

I am a senior software developer at Transport for London specialising in deploying applications, especially to the cloud. Our software covers all aspects of keeping London moving, including revenue collection from Oyster and Contactless, and current and further Road User Charging. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Open University and am currently studying for Master’s Degree in Applied Statistics with Birkbeck College. I started work as a junior developer (what would be called an apprenticeship nowadays) and have worked in the retail sector, social services and telecommunications as well as the public transport sector so there are many routes into working as a software developer. I am particularly enthusiastic about encouraging young women into considering the apprenticeship route into work as women are traditionally underrepresented in Technology and Engineering, to the detriment of the industry and society as a whole. I am a teacher on TfL’s Level 4 Software Development Apprenticeship and am part of the Assessment team that recruits Apprentices and Graduates each year. I also teach Non-Violent Communication and am very interested in psychological safety at work. You can see from this that working for Transport for London is highly varied and opens whatever opportunities you want to take.

Always keen to learn new things, Charlotte has had a varied career so far. After her Oxford biochemistry degree, she became a strategy consultant at L.E.K. Consulting, making business plans & financial models for clients across lots of different industries. Her love of data, cool robots & machine learning took her to Ocado Retail as a Data Analyst, and then Ocado Technology as a Product Manager, where she discovered & launched new automation and software products. In November of 2023, she left Ocado & took the plunge to co-found a tech start-up “Keyfficient”, which guides people through the UK house buying process. Having launched their MVP (minimum viable product), Charlotte is getting up-to-speed on marketing & accounting, and spending lots of time talking to users about how to improve the product - any suggestions very welcome!
