LEH School Sixth Form Prospectus

Page 1

How do you distil a two-year experience into a few short paragraphs?

The two years you spend in the Sixth Form are almost certainly the most exciting chapter of your school career. It’s a real step change, where your independence comes into its own and you discover a new depth to the relationships with those around you – the teaching staff, your fellow students, and younger pupils, who look up to you for guidance. You will experience new layers and breadth in the exploration of your chosen A level subjects and, for many, the EPQ qualification. With a strong and caring support system around you, you’ll hone your skills and grow in confidence to take greater agency over your learning.

As Head Mistress, I really value working alongside Sixth Form students with the ideas and energy they bring. There’s a genuine chance to have influence and shape our school, particularly as we navigate and respond to challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world. Every class of leavers from LEH has the potential to leave a legacy, whether that’s through the support they give to others, the way they inspire younger pupils, the initiatives they introduce, or the roles of leadership and responsibility they take on.

There’s a wealth of guidance and support from our staff and alumnae, who offer careers advice to help inspire you as you begin to consider the options ahead. Your time in Sixth Form will broaden your horizons and give you the chance to discover new interests and passions. Quite possibly, your plans will shift and change as you identify new avenues you’d like to explore.

Another highlight of Sixth Form life at LEH is our close proximity and strong links with Hampton School. With a shared enrichment programme to prepare you as much as possible for your next phase, you’ll enjoy the opportunity for collaboration and extra-curricular activities with neighbouring Hampton students.

The time may go quickly but the memories you make during your time in LEH’s Sixth Form and the experiences you enjoy will be with you for the rest of your lives, wherever your path takes you.

The two most exciting and diverse years of your academic life

The subjects you study in the Sixth Form, will create the bedrock of your academic experience. In addition, you will benefit from a range of other challenges, trips and opportunities.

As well as academic lessons, you'll learn by taking part in activities such as sport, music, drama, Young Enterprise and Combined Cadet Forces. Mentoring younger pupils will deepen and enrich your outlook on the wider world. You'll develop leadership skills by taking on roles within our House system and on committees, such as Model United Nations. These experiences will stay with you for the rest of your life. LEH students leave for university well-rounded, grounded and intellectually curious, and they go on to thrive in a range of academic settings. They know how to realise their full potential, contribute to their communites, and retain a sense of fun, purpose and direction in everything they do.

"LEH is a school that truly fosters a love of learning in its students, and a sense that anything and any career goal is achievable."
Lower Sixth Student

Sixth Form life at LEH is a completely new experience

Entering Sixth Form at LEH is an experience like no other: you have the opportunity to undertake new responsibilities, you build upon and create new friendships, and you further pursue your academic interests far beyond GCSE level.

September is always an exciting time – new year, new stationery, new classes and timetables – but the first few days of Sixth Form at LEH are like no other start to an Autumn Term. For the first time, you can enjoy the newly refurbished Sixth Form Common Room, are able to structure your studying according to your preferences, and have the privilege of being an older, respected member of the school community. With GCSEs over, Sixth Form is a time to further your academic pursuits, diving into new subjects and expanding your knowledge through extensive enrichment and wider education programmes.

The buzz of excitement on the Lower Sixth Induction Day in early September was unparalleled for this reason, and as we looked ahead to the coming years – the Leadership trip, having a greater say in the way LEH is run, trips, exhibitions, the Christmas Panto and Prom – we knew then, without a doubt, we would be in for the best two years of our academic and social life.

Academically, the final two years of LEH presents a change from what students are used to: smaller class sizes allow more focused attention, both on the subjects and by the teachers towards the students. There is more opportunity to ask questions beyond the curriculum, develop deeper understanding of complex concepts and focus on areas that some may find challenging. A closer relationship with your teachers and peers makes every lesson an open, non-judgmental space for learning, complimenting the slightly modified lesson format, where class time is dedicated primarily to discussion and teaching, while homework is reserved for practice, consolidation and reading.

Another key part of the LEH Sixth Form experience is Subject Enrichment. Teachers encourage students to endeavour to read widely around all subjects to further their interest and understanding. Subject Plus lessons are introduced – lunchtime sessions dedicated to teaching students interested in pursuing their subject further into areas beyond the curriculum – which later helps with interviews, personal statements and exams. This is just a small part of the School’s involvement in our preparation for the future: our weekly Life Advice sessions are designed to educate students about integral aspects of adult life, from taxes to career options. Every year, the Careers Department organises representatives from different universities and

careers to come to LEH for the Higher Education and Careers Fairs. These fairs are incredibly useful and allow us to talk to, and make connections with people beyond the LEH bubble. We receive talks from LEH alumnae who share their stories beyond LEH and societies like MedSoc prepare students for the demands of university applications, reducing any anxieties about preparations for the future.

Students can also apply for Roles of Responsibility which inspire skills of organisation, communication, creativity and more. Some examples of the roles are Subject Representatives, Inclusion Champions, Creative Directors, MUN Secretariats, Digital Mentors and the Eco Squad. These roles allow the student body to play an integral role within the School, helping the LEH community to continue to develop.

More than anything else, Sixth Form supports all students to undergo huge academic and emotional development. The women that leave LEH are very different from the girls that entered in Thirds. Our interests and talents are nurtured by the School's inclusive and supportive environment, and our final two years play such an influential role in this evolution. Next July, when our year group’s final day comes around and we must finally say goodbye to our home of over a decade for some, there will be floods of tears for the place that loved and taught us all so much, especially in our time as Sixth Formers.

Head Girl Team 2024-2025

Balancing body, mind and spirit

LEH is a welcoming, safe community where you will establish strong relationships, learning alongside other engaged and enthusiastic pupils. You’ll be inspired to achieve your academic, artistic and athletic potential, but it’s also essential that you are happy, well-adjusted and fulfilled. That’s why you’ll be supported through every success and failure: the good times and the not-so-good ones.

There’s always someone there to listen

Our Tutor Groups are small, with an average of just ten students in each and you’ll have the same Form Tutor throughout the two years you’re with us. They’ll be your mentor, someone you’ll meet with every day who’ll help you excel academically and nurture your individual talents. They’ll also oversee your UCAS application and support you to create a compelling personal statement.

Friendships that last a lifetime

Our year groups build close-knit relationships and have a real sense of identity. The friendships you forge will form an essential support network in the years to come. Our House system encourages you to connect with students throughout the school, giving you the opportunity to become a mentor and role model for the younger pupils. You will be offered the chance to be trained as a Peer Mentor, to listen to and support other pupils.

We make your health and wellbeing our priority

We have two School Nurses on site and you can refer yourself to our Counsellors at any time. Life Advice lessons, workshops and talks given by external speakers on a range of topics will enhance your knowledge and self-awareness, and provide you with a wellbeing toolkit of self-care skills. We support parents too, through our half-termly Wellbeing Wednesday online lecture series.

We take online security very seriously

We have a dedicated Digital Safety Coordinator and a ‘Digital Mentor’ system that trains Sixth Formers to go into classes and talk to younger pupils about staying safe online.

You, and your parents, can talk to us

As well as timetabled meetings during the year, your parents can speak to the Head Mistress, Deputy Head Pastoral, Head of Sixth Form and Heads of Year whenever they have any concerns. You’ll find their contact details on My School Portal (MSP).

Topics covered last year:

Stress management

Excellent academic success

While life for LEH pupils is about more than exam results, we know they are the key that opens the doors to the universities and careers of their choice.

A level Grades five year average, 2019-2023

"My teachers have become my mentors in furthering my academic career and growth as a student and person."

Students will follow a two-year linear course and sit all of the exams that count towards their A level grades at the end of the Upper Sixth.

Students joining the Sixth Form in 2025 will choose between studying three or four A levels, with most also doing the EPQ. They will continue these courses for two years through to summer 2027. There will be internal examinations at the end of the Lower Sixth and mock examinations in January of the Upper Sixth. The Sixth Form is also the time when they can choose between continuing to use their iPad or using a laptop in our 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD) scheme.

Factors that a student may consider when choosing to study three A levels include:

• focus on three subjects, alongside the EPQ, wider reading potential and other aspects of University preparation.

• are certain of their subject choices and know that these fit with proposed university choices.

Factors that a student may consider when choosing to study four A levels include:

• they want the breadth that four A levels can offer and consider that they will rise to the challenge of studying these along with all of the other aspects of Sixth Form life.

• they are less sure of proposed university courses and want the flexibility that four A levels offers.

We do everything we can to make sure students can take their first choice subjects, but very occasionally this isn’t possible. We reserve the right to withdraw a subject if fewer than three students want to take a course. The number of students required for a subject running for the first time is higher.

Currently, you can choose three or four of the following subjects:

• Art

• Biology

• Chemistry

• Classical Civilisation (from Sept 2024)

• Classical Greek

• Computer Science

• Drama and Theatre

• Economics

• English Literature

• French

• Geography

• German

• History

• History of Art

• Latin

• Mandarin

• Mathematics

• Further Mathematics

• Music

• Philosophy

• Physics

• Politics

• Product Design

• Psychology

• Spanish

LEH Grade Requirements for A level

When deciding on their A level subjects, students should not only choose subjects they are passionate about, but they should also play to their strengths. It is important that they consider both those subjects they think they will really enjoy at A level and those in which they will do well in based on prior achievement.

Accordingly, while we recommend that students only study A levels in which they have achieved an 8 or 9, we require that students achieve at least a GCSE grade 7 in these subjects. The exceptions are Mathematics and Physics, where a grade 8 is required and 9 is recommended.

Where a student chooses a subject not studied at GCSE, the following applies:

*GCSE humanities taught at LEH are: Classical Civilisation, Geography, History and Religious Studies

"A great opportunity to develop your research skills and enhance your university application by delving deeper into a subject you love."
Upper Sixth Leaver

The Extended Project Qualification

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is highly valued by universities, with some offering lower conditions if you complete one. It’s equivalent to half an A level (with A* being the top grade).

What does it involve?

You’ll need to produce a 5,000-word essay (or an artifact and a 2,000 word essay) based on a topic of your choice. However, this isn’t just about writing the essay. It’s about pursuing an investigation from initial idea to completion. You’ll keep a log of your progress, reflect on the decisions you make and the things you learn along the way.

When does it take place?

You will have taught skills lessons in the Autumn Term which will cover a range of topics like how to choose a title, research and referencing, time management etc. You will then start working on your essay and log from January in Lower Sixth and hand the project in at the end of your Lower Sixth Year. At the end of the process, you’ll also present your findings to teachers and fellow pupils and field their questions.

How is it taught?

Apart from the taught skills element in the Autumn Term, you won’t have a teacher in the traditional sense. Instead, a member of staff will act as your supervisor and guide. The direction and responsibility of the EPQ is entirely down to

you. That’s why, as well as choosing a topic that relates to your proposed university course, it’s a good idea to pick something you feel passionate about.

Here are a few of the questions students have tackled recently:

• A Python program to model and visualise the Compton scattering effect in three dimensions.

• Through an analysis of the factors involved in the development of String Theory, evaluate the viability of this theory as the prime candidate for a Theory of Everything.

• Are the proven benefits of Kaftrio, a Cystic Fibrosis drug, sufficiently great to outweigh the observed side effects?

• An Analysis of the developing approaches to Cellular Agriculture.

• An analysis of the role of genetic factors and motivation in team sports.

Leadership for life

LEH will prepare you to be a confident, socially-minded leader – an independent thinker who collaborates with others, a grounded individual who aspires to making LEH a happy place to study, a thoughtful person who will both lead and care for our community. Enrich and experience

We’re justifiably proud of our academic success but not all skills are learned in a classroom. Essential life lessons can be found in the pursuit of your passions, and LEH students are given the opportunity to follow their hearts by participating in sports, arts, and student clubs and societies.

Here, you will devote yourself to your individual interests while developing an understanding of group dynamics, empathy, and what it’s like to lead. We believe it’s what makes an LEH education such a rich experience and what makes LEH pupils so well rounded and interesting to universities and employers.

The Extra-Curricular Fair at the beginning of each school year showcases all the options available to you. In the unlikely event you can’t find a club that aligns with your interests, we encourage you to create it yourself. Chances are there are other students who share your interests too.

We wear our colours with pride

From playing fields to playing the part, there are lots of activities on offer at LEH, but we’re particularly proud of our achievements in sport, music, and drama.

We have a long-standing reputation for sporting prowess, and our beautiful grounds and exceptional facilities allow most sports to be played on site.

LEH students have been successful at regional and national level in lacrosse, rowing, gymnastics, swimming, crosscountry and netball. If any student wants to enjoy some sporting activities – social or competitive – they just have to head out to our playing fields or courts. Sixth Form students are lucky to have the opportunity to participate in weekly compulsory PE lessons where a variety of activities include some of the following:

• Cheerleading

• Badminton

• Touch rugby

• Yoga

• Water-polo

• Box-fit

There are also our key sports on offer in both lessons and extra-curricular which include netball, lacrosse and rowing. Senior sport is forever growing and we are pleased to be able to offer such a wide choice for participation, fun and competition.

Over the last few years we have had many students representing sports to National level. These include the following:

• GB Gymnastics squad and England National 17-21 squad

• GB U15 National Swimming

• England Tumbling 17-21 team

• GB open age group National Swimming

• U19A England Team for lacrosse

• U19B England Team for lacrosse

• U20 Scottish Team for lacrosse

• GB Rowing

• Fencing-U14 England squad

• U19A Wales Team and U20 Wales Team for lacrosse

• National Gold and Bronze medallist in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

• National Schools Rowing Regatta Champions 2019 and 2021

"Achievements in the creative and performing arts are widespread."

ISI Report, 2022

We’re serious about drama

Whether it’s staging a West End musical with the students from Hampton School, being mentored by a professional playwright to write and put on your own play, directing drama shorts, or taking part in the technical running of a show, we encourage our students to explore, experiment and enjoy everything the Drama Department has to offer.

In recent years we have staged musicals such as Return to the Forbidden Planet and Legally Blonde, trained our students in stage combat for shows such as Boudica, and commissioned new work from playwrights writing expressly for large female casts as part of our Write the Girl initiative. Meanwhile, in the Drama Studio, our students have showcased their work at Monologue Mondays and engaged with the joint Drama Society for both Hampton and LEH Upper School students.

We keep ourselves fresh by regularly hosting workshops and training from leading theatre practitioners such as Splendid Productions and The Paper Birds. Our students regularly enjoy visiting local and London theatres, with the Performing Arts tour to New York being one of our most cherished trips to date.

All of this work takes place in and around our stunning 240 seat theatre: it is a flexible space at the heart of the Arts Centre, which includes a rehearsal suite, studio theatre, green room and seminar room, as well as the Music and Art department.

"The Drama Department is incredible and opportunities really open up to you in the Sixth Form. You have the chance to direct or take part in the Sixth Form play. It's completely yours and no one else's, you have complete creative freedom and it's great."

We make world-class music

LEH has a fizzing Music Department with a myriad of orchestras, ensembles, choirs, jazz bands, chamber music and rock bands. Its top choir, The Holles Singers won the title of Youth Choir of the Year, in the Choir of the Year Competition and has toured Venice, New York and Budapest. The weekly music rehearsals culminate in dazzling concerts throughout the year. The groups are designed to inspire musicians from absolute beginners right up to the post-diploma whizzes and produce uproariously brilliant performances. At lunchtimes, our numerous practice rooms in the purpose-built music department are full to bursting with instrumentalists and singers, keen to hone their performances for the next concert or simply blow off steam. Our pianists can play on our Steinway Concert Grand and we use our state-of-the-art Recording Studio to record our musicians for posterity. From Bach to Shostakovich, from Orfeo to Wicked, there’s never a dull moment in the Music Department!

Individual music lessons are currently available in the instruments listed below:

• Flute

The best of both worlds

Boarding school facilities, in a day school

It’s hard to believe we’re just ten miles from central London. We’re home to four lacrosse pitches, eight outdoor netball courts, six grass tennis courts, a croquet lawn, a sports hall and an indoor swimming pool. We’ve also added an ergo room and an activities studio.

The Sixth Form pupils enjoy superb facilities exclusively for their use. There are two Common Rooms, a Sixth Form Library, a café, and specially laid out classrooms for seminars.

There are no shops or crowded coffee bars to distract you; It’s the kind of environment where you can focus your mind and get your work done and dusted.

That said, when you do want to take a break, you only need to step outside and make the most of our 24 acres of green space. We’ll encourage you to stay healthy by taking in the wide range of sports we offer, and if you want to develop your interests in any extra-curricular activities, they’ll be right on your doorstep too.

A single-sex education, with strong links to Hampton School

It’s been proven that girls’ schools like LEH give young people the edge. That’s why we believe that students thrive in an environment like ours, where they’re free to experiment, express opinions, explore and take on new challenges.

At LEH, you’ll be supported by strong role models and inspired by your peers. However, we also know how important it is for pupils of all genders to work together. That’s why we have strong and ever-growing links with our neighbours at Hampton School. Students have reciprocal access to Common Rooms during breaks and we run joint enrichment lessons in both the Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth.

"I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. The people, the environment and the opportunities are top class."

Preparing you for university and beyond

We do everything we can to prepare you for life after LEH. Part of that is making sure you’re ready to attend your chosen university and pursue the career of your dreams.

Our large team of Careers staff are experts in guiding you through the university application process, from choosing the right A levels, completing your UCAS form, finding work experience, writing a compelling personal statement and preparing for interviews. There is also a designated member of staff responsible for overseeing arrangements relating to applications to American universities.

Intellectual discussion and debate are encouraged to increase your enthusiasm for the subjects you love. You will be introduced to new topics and the most up-to-date thinking in your proposed area of specialism.

Weekly lessons cover a wide variety of career paths and often include visiting speakers. We also have regular visits from admissions tutors and lecturers from leading universities, and often invite back former pupils to speak about their careers and studies.

We host annual Careers and Higher Education Fairs with Hampton and other local Schools.

Our programme touches on a range of topics that go beyond the traditional curriculum, including:

• Leadership and bonding

• Research, study and presentation skills

• Employability – work experience and internships

• Stress management

Furthermore, if you’re hoping to apply for Oxbridge, medical school, or universities outside of the UK, you’ll get expert advice from subject specialists.

It’s why most of our students take up offers to study at Russell Group universities; why we are ranked amongst the top London schools when it comes to gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. And why one of our Upper Sixth Leavers commented "Brilliant Careers Department. They have your best interests at heart."

Life after LEH

During its 300-year history, LEH has been proud to educate thousands and thousands of outstanding pupils who have all gone on to shape and change the world around them.

Attending LEH gives students so much more than a top-class education. Their time here instils a sense of confidence, strength and resilience that stays with them long after they leave. We are every bit as proud of our alumnae and all they go on to achieve, as we are of our pupils while they attend school. We continue to support and champion them always.

Our alumnae include the government’s first ever Women’s Health Ambassador; the MD of You Tube UK; one the scientists responsible for developing one of the first Covid vaccines; Radio 1's longest running DJ; the Creative Director of Apple TV Europe; an Olympic swimmer; a High Court judge; one of the first women to sail round the world; an Oscar nominated actor; and a National Boxing champion, plus plenty of others all as equally impressive in their own ways.
