GETTING INVOLVED
THANKS TO YOU
Greetings from our Head Mistress
It is with immense pleasure and gratitude that I present the LEH Philanthropy Report for 2022/23. This document serves as a testament to the extraordinary impact that generosity and community support have had on our School. This takes many forms, from donations to LEH’s own and chosen charities, to volunteering and community projects close to our pupil, staff, and community’s hearts.
This report is not just a compilation of numbers; it is a celebration of the collective impact of giving and the positive impacts of a spirit of generosity on individuals and society. Nurturing a philanthropic culture among our pupils creates a positive ‘ripple effect’. When individuals give back, it can inspire others to do the same, creating a chain reaction of generosity and compassion, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive, caring, and compassionate world.
We all know that giving helps others and it is positive for us too. It is not simply the initial ‘good vibe’ rush either, there’s science behind
it. Research shows that giving can boost your physical and mental health in numerous ways. Generosity, the science shows, is not just a gift from the heart – it can be good for your heart too! Research indicates that giving to, and helping others, can lower your blood pressure. It also reduces levels of the ‘stress’ hormone, cortisol whilst stimulating the brain’s mesolimbic pathway, releasing endorphins which boost self-esteem, elevate feelings of happiness, and combat feelings of depression. So however we choose to help others, it can really lead to a longer and happier life!
At LEH, we pride ourselves not only on academic excellence, but also in shaping inspirational, exceptional, and well-rounded individuals. Fostering a culture where the values of community, generosity, and excellence are cherished, provides our pupils with a deeper understanding of different perspectives, develops feelings of empathy, and challenges them to step outside their comfort zones while gaining new skills and valuable experiences.
Throughout the pages of this report, you will discover the inspiring stories of individuals and groups who have rallied behind our school, contributing their time, resources, and expertise. As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to every member of the LEH family who has played a role in making a positive difference.

2 PHILANTHROPY REPORT 2022-2023
Together we do Remarkable Things
It’s been wonderful to see the LEH community come together over the last year in support of some brilliant initiatives and causes.
A highlight was our Great Big Bursary Ball, attended by 250 families and staff from across LEH resulting in a fabulous evening of togetherness in support of the LEH Bursary Fund. We were privileged to hear an eloquent, moving and impassioned speech from Chloe, a Lower Sixth student and Elizabeth Candy Scholar, who has directly benefited from the Bursary Fund, and who so powerfully brought to life the real-world impact of your generous donations.
This year, our whole school has continued to honour our heritage of kindness and community support by taking part in some wonderful events and initiatives. Seeing the joy in the faces of visitors from local care homes as they visited for afternoon teas with our welcoming student Service Volunteers, and the pride on the faces of our Shine programme graduates – Year 5 pupils from local primary
schools – receiving certificates for taking part in our dynamic programme of innovative Saturday morning lessons with the support of our teachers and student mentors, was a wonderful reminder of the many ways that LEH works to engage and give back to our neighbours and local community.
The time and resource we so enthusiastically invest in others is important to the fabric of our identity as a school, and the values that our pupils bring to life each day. This is evident right across the school, from the many initiatives that our LEH Junior pupils so eagerly take part in, from sponsored reading in support of LEH’s Giving Day, to inventive ideas for raising money for their chosen charity of the year, to the sponsored fun runs and epic rowing challenges that our Senior School pupils and parents have taken part in.
We hope you feel inspired by what you read in this snapshot of what was a busy year, made possible thanks to the wonderful support of our pupils, teachers, staff, families and incredible network of LEH Alumnae.
If you’d like to be involved in helping LEH to give back, please do get in touch with our Development team as we’d love to discuss any ideas you may have.
With best wishes
Lisa Day Director of Development and Communications

The LEH Bursary Fund
At LEH we are passionate about learning and believe strongly that access to a first-class education should be available to all. Providing a learning experience that truly supports and motivates a child can have transformational effects on their life. Creating a truly diverse environment, which benefits every pupil, is what drives our work in support of the LEH Bursary Fund.
We raise money for the Bursary Fund through regular donations, dedicated events throughout the year, ad hoc campaigns, and legacies. Through the generosity of our LEH
LEH Bursary Fund at a Glance
community, last year we raised our biggest total yet – £1.2 million. All donations to the Bursary Fund are ring-fenced and cannot be used for any purpose other than the support of our bursary pupils. In 2022/23 we spent £1.75 million on bursarial support and we currently provide means-tested support to 10% of pupils in the Senior School.
The demand for transformational bursaries is greater than ever and we hope to continue to grow our Bursary Programme and increase this number further in the coming years.

Celebrating the Joy of Giving Back
To celebrate the Season of Giving and Giving Back, we enlisted the help of our youngest pupils. We asked the Junior School, Thirds and L4, “if you could give a present to anyone in the world, who would you choose and what would you give?”
Our Lower 6 team of Creative Directors picked the winners from the hundreds of entries that flooded in. For
Twelve Days of Giving, December 2022
the 12 days before the end of Winter Term we featured the winning entries, which really melted our hearts.
The campaign was a great success, and we thank our wonderfully philanthropic LEH community for all the kind and generous donations.
Easyfundraising is the UK’s biggest online shopping fundraising site
As a community, we can all raise money for the LEH Bursary Fund simply by going through the easyfundraising website every time we shop online. It doesn’t cost a penny extra, as the donations come directly from the retailers, and it’s really simple to use. You can now also download the donation reminder to your phone and never miss another opportunity to raise funds.
There are over 7,000 companies involved in the scheme, including M&S, Argos, John Lewis, Booking.com, Aviva and Waitrose, so you can collect on everything from groceries, electronics and fashion to household utilities and travel.
There are already 153 supporters in the LEH community, who have raised over £5,000 for the Bursary Fund.

Making the World a Better Place
Allowing all children to thrive, regardless of financial means, has far reaching benefits to society. Since 2016, LEH Bursary holders have moved on to top universities. After graduating they have gone on to become doctors, barristers, magistrates, and holders of key positions in politics, the arts and science. All are dedicated to passing on the benefits of the LEH education they received.

LEH’s Bursary Ball – a Roaring Success
The hallowed turf of Twickenham had never seen a more stylish array of guests, as the home of rugby was transformed last summer into a glittering speakeasy club for LEH's Great Big Bursary Ball.
The glad rags were out in force as dapper gents and flapper gals enjoyed a pitch-side glass of giggle water while they were serenaded by a pitch-perfect jazzy musical medley from our talented Holles Singers. A walk through a speakeasy-styled foyer led to the glittering Gatsby-esque styled night club, where guests enjoyed a three-course dinner, drinks, and dancing. The evening was the perfect opportunity to bring our LEH community face-to-face with the real-life impact of the Bursary Fund. Elizabeth Candy Scholar and U6 pupil, Chloe Chen, gave an impassioned and personal speech about the importance of bursaries. She said: “These bursaries...represent more than just financial assistance. They symbolise determination, faith in every student regardless of financial circumstance, and the belief that every student deserves the chance to excel. It should be a massive point of pride for LEH.”
Thank you to all our guests, suppliers and wonderfully generous LEH community who supported the event.
“The whole evening really was a roaring success. It was a wonderful way for me to experience the sense of fun and benevolence of the LEH community and to meet so many parents before taking up the mantel of Head Mistress. I would like to thank everyone who came for giving so generously.”

The Heather Hanbury 7 Fund
During Mrs Hanbury’s nine years as Head Mistress at LEH, she worked tirelessly to grow and develop the LEH Bursary Fund. There could not be a more fitting legacy to mark her retirement than the establishment of the Heather Hanbury Bursary Scholarship. This special bursary award has been awarded to a 2023 successful applicant who demonstrated resilience, determination, and curiosity of thought. The award is funded entirely by seven kind and generous donors and will cover the Heather Hanbury Bursary pupil’s entire Senior School education from the age of 11 to 18.
“Over my time as Head Mistress at LEH, I was able to see first-hand the immense impact that LEH can have on the life of a student there, as well as the benefits of an inclusive and diverse environment. I feel passionate about making a difference to the lives of those who would thrive at LEH but do not have the means to attend without financial support, and I am immensely proud to leave this legacy and support a child on their journey through LEH.”
Heather Hanbury
Thank you to our seven donors: The Baulk Family, Ms Patricia Clark, Heather & Roland Hanbury, Mr Jeremy Oates & Ms Liv Sandbaek, Mrs Jane Ross, and the two other wonderful donors who have chosen to remain anonymous. If you would be interested in discussing the funding of a bursary scholarship, please contact the LEH Development Team.

Giving Day 2023
The sun shone as pupils across the whole school took part in a range of fun activities for Giving Day 2023 in June. Junior School pupils jumped for joy in a skipping challenge whilst our Senior School got involved in recreating an orange pudding recipe from 1710, tennis rallies, and a quirky STEM challenge – creating musical compositions using only science equipment.
Giving Day is our largest fundraising event of the year, and 2024 is gearing up to be the best yet – fostering the importance of passing on kindness.
Thank you to all our fabulous past and future donors.

Lasting Legacies for a Brighter Future
Over the years, LEH has benefited from the generosity of those who have remembered us in their Will, leaving the School both large and smaller sums. It is heart-warming, and a true testament to the wonderful teaching and happy memories an education at LEH provides.
We were incredibly grateful to receive generous bequests from two such benefactors in 2022/23.
Diana Manning Miles had been a big-hearted champion of LEH for many years, creating and funding a prize given to the winner of an annual reading competition.
Sadly, Diana passed away in November 2021, however her regard for LEH continued with the legacy creating the Miles Bursary, supporting a new
Sixth Form student each year. We are incredibly grateful for her generous legacy gift which will benefit many LEH Bursary pupils over the coming years.
The second legacy was from alumna, Sheila Leach, Class of 1949. Sheila was a huge supporter of the Holly Club and other local charities including Teddington Memorial Hospital and those caring for animals.
If you have been touched in some way by LEH – perhaps when you were a student, through your interactions as an alumna, or while you were working as a member of staff, we invite you to consider leaving a bequest.
Legacy gifts allow us to plan for the long-term future of the school and to continue to offer the very finest education to future generations.
Legacy gifts are free from inheritance tax. To find out more, please contact our Development Team: development@lehs.org.uk.

Caring for our Local Community and Beyond
Giving is in the very DNA of LEH. It is an integral part of who we are and what we do, starting from our very beginnings as a result of Lady Eleanor Holles’ legacy and her pioneering vision of providing education to disadvantaged girls in the East End of London.
Giving back to our local community is particularly important to us – here are a few of the things we have been doing.

NATIONWIDE EDUCATION INITIATIVES
In addition to providing first-class education and motivation to our pupils, LEH has also been at the forefront of education sector developments, joint-school initiatives and calls for action across the UK.
Write the Girl
Write the Girl is a partnership between schools and theatre professionals to inspire playwrights to develop the meaningful stories our young women deserve, while also increasing maintained school access to the arts. The works, suitable for large and multi-sex casts, aim to stretch, challenge, and engage a generation of young women by creating thoughtprovoking roles for them.
This year’s production, Team, centred on the highs and lows of a grass roots women’s football team and included
cast members from Hampton High school. It was a sell-out success.
Plans are already afoot to widen the initiative. LEH hosted a workshop to bring schools and playwrights together and provide advice and guidance about how Write the Girl can benefit more schools across the country. The next phase of the initiative, the girl writes, gives students an opportunity to create work themselves, partnering them with Write the Girl playwrights to develop their own works.

Call to Action on Youth Mental Health
In 2020, LEH joined forces with school leaders from some of the most high-profile maintained and independent schools in the country to co-found The Coalition for Youth Mental Health. The Coalition shares knowledge and develops strategies on the mental health crisis facing many young people today.
The group published its first report in 2021 highlighting the difficulties facing young people in the wake of the pandemic. In 2023 it published its second report setting out how the UK education sector might respond to the growing challenges of supporting pupils’ mental health.
“
I’m proud of the role that LEH and our Coalition partners from across the independent and maintained sectors are playing in highlighting the serious issues affecting children and young people’s mental health and bringing best practice to the fore. ”
ROWENA COLE HEAD MISTRESS
The report, entitled Solutions for a Crisis, highlights the excellent work going on in schools to support pupils, but warns that delays in accessing child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in the community are putting a strain on education providers.
Following the Report’s findings, the Coalition has made several recommendations to the Government, including introducing mandatory waiting time targets so children and young people can access mental health support more quickly.
“ We urge the Government to act now to better equip schools to effectively mitigate the visible and significant impact of lockdowns on our children and young people. At LEH we continue to listen and work with pupils, parents, our partner schools, and the wider community, to ensure our pastoral provision is the best that it can be. ”

Reaching for Excellence
Feltham College Sixth Form, set up by Reach Academy in partnership with LEH and Hampton School, opened its doors in September 2022. The College is an innovative model of post-16 education, based on an alliance of maintained and independent educators alongside leaders from the business and health sectors. It aims to be a centre of academic and vocational excellence offering choice and opportunity to the young people of Feltham.
Amanda Poyner, Deputy Head, Pastoral, continued as Behaviour and Exclusions Link Governor of the Reach
Academy and has been leading on its outreach and public benefit work.
Additionally, LEH is supporting the development of the College’s A level curriculum and teaching in Physics, English and Psychology, and has assisted with GCSE Art moderation. In both Physics and Psychology, LEH staff offered enrichment and extension activities which included Feltham College students visiting LEH to give presentations and lead an assembly. In English, LEH staff provided face-toface teaching to both Year 12 and 13 groups, covering specific texts on the syllabus.
“ We are proud to be associated with this centre of academic excellence and look forward to continuing to work with the school and its students. ”

Shine On
Our SHINE Outreach Programme, delivering fun and stimulating learning experiences to local maintained primary school children, continues to prove extremely popular.
Hundreds of students have benefitted from the scheme over the last 14 years. This most recent programme included 19 talented teachers and seven marvellous Lower 6 Pupil Mentors who ran Serious Fun on Saturday sessions, helping 38 Year 5 pupils from 13 local primary schools with the emphasis on enjoyment.
Sessions are designed to stretch, challenge, and improve the pupils’ knowledge and skills in a variety of areas, and ultimately encourage a love of learning. Along with the traditional humanities subjects and science, the students also take part in activities they may not otherwise have had an opportunity to discover, such as fencing, mindfulness and psychology.
“ I loved learning new things. I really enjoyed it and I want to do it again! ”
SHINE PARTICIPANT
“All the staff and pupils involved feel passionately about the programme and its aims. We strive to deliver an engaging series of sessions where everybody involved has a great time! We are proud that the programme is running into its second decade, and we now have had several former SHINE participants achieving places to study at LEH. Some have later become Mentors during Sixth Form. They are passionate about sharing their positive experience with others. ”

Investing in the Future
At LEH we inspire the next generation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing our students with a wide range of exciting opportunities.
There are numerous competitions for students of all ages to participate in, both within and across departments. These include the UK Maths Trust challenges, British Science Olympiads, Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge and the Airgineers Micro Drone Challenge. In addition, each department runs its own weekly clubs and subject clinics.
WELL Logistics STEM Scholarship
Every year, this prestigious scholarship is awarded to a pupil who demonstrates their passion for one or more STEM subjects and intends to pursue further study and a career path in a STEM-related area.
The STEM Scholars have inspired both students and staff with their energy, enthusiasm, commitment, and passion. They have entered (and won) national and international competitions, attended conferences and created beautiful works of art.
There are also many organised trips and opportunities within the school year to focus on areas, such as the annual Goswell Science Lecture, funded by a generous donation from The Goswell Family. Our recent lecture was given by alumna, Melanie Ivarsson, Chief Development Officer at Moderna. Melanie was awarded an OBE for services to public health during COVID-19 in the New Year Honours list 2022.
“Increasing the number of girls who choose to study STEM subjects at school is the first step in reducing the STEM gender gap in the workplace. We are passionate about taking steps to make change in the community we live in.

Charity and Raising Awareness
Helping others less fortunate than yourself is a muchcherished principle at LEH. Pupils have been raising money for charity ever since the school was first founded in 1710 and today’s students are no less enthusiastic. This year, pupils raised more than £17,000 for a variety of worthy causes – £7,000 more than last year!
Every year the Junior and Senior schools each select a charity to
become the main recipient of the annual fundraising efforts. In addition, pupils also volunteer in a wide variety of other capacities.
LEH’s 2023/2024 chosen charities are making a real difference to our local community. Our Senior School charity is SPEAR, which supports people experiencing homelessness in South West London. Our Junior School’s charity, Animal Rescue and Care, fosters and rehomes animals in Richmond upon Thames and other local boroughs. Fundraising is going well thanks to bake sales, quizzes, the Thirds disco and the hotly contested staff v students netball match, with lots more events planned.
Thirds Sponsored Walk
The Year 7 students put their best foot forward walking 10km through Bushy Park raising over £1,800 for the 2022/23 charity Girls Not Brides, which works to end child marriage and gender-based violence.
Footloose for Charity
LEH’s gymnasts raised the roof with its Back to the 80s themed Gym Display, raising money for LEH’s chosen school charities. With neon outfits, leg warmers and 80s favourites, LEH Junior and Senior School pupils showed they could Jump, Move to the Beat and get Footloose to these, and many other classic 80s hits.

Donors give an average of 2.5 times more to charity when match funded.
Can you help us with Match Funding?
Many financial institutions and large companies offer match funding as a staff benefit. The scheme supports employees’ fundraising efforts by ‘matching’ charity fundraising efforts, either undertaken by their employees, or those connected to them. These schemes, however, are not exclusive to the major corporate giants. Many independent companies may be interested in charitable giving through match funding too.
Yours could be one of those employers!
When considering a donation to our Bursary Fund, Friends of LEH events or individual LEH charitable activities, please consider contacting your employer about providing match funding –it really can make a HUGE difference!

Life is Better with Friends
The Friends of LEH is the School’s parent association. Its aim is to enhance our pupils’ educational experience and to support and promote a vibrant parent, carers, and family community by running various social and fundraising events throughout the year. Fundraising events have included: the Annual Friends Quiz Night; a Comedy & Curry evening; a summer Cinema on the Green screening; the ever-popular Second-Hand Uniform Sales; and the biggest annual fund raiser of the year, the Christmas Bazaar.
Over the years, this wonderful group of parent volunteers has financially contributed to the acquisition of specialist data-logging equipment, display boards for the pupils’ art and sporting achievements as well as high quality sound and lighting systems for concert and drama productions. They have also assisted with refurbishing the Junior School
Science Laboratory, created The Friends’ Courtyard and made a substantial contribution to the building of our much-loved Gateway area.
Money has also supported author talks, workshops, and furnishings to make the library experience of both the Junior and Senior Schools more enjoyable for the students.
