Welcome to Lady Lowcountry IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER our farm house was surrounded by empty harvested fields, which made the quiet nights even quieter. When I opened my bedroom window I could hear a car coming down the road miles away, so hearing Santa’s sleigh bells would be a piece of cake. At least that’s what I thought. Every Christmas Eve I would pull my blanket off of my bed and sit in TERRI BILOTTA my open bedroom doorway at the end of the hall. If I didn’t hear terri@ladylowcountry.com Santa, I would be sure to see him through the reflection of the color wheel that shone on our aluminum Christmas tree. But every Christmas morning, like clock work, I woke up in my bed. When our daughter was a little girl she slept under the Christmas tree every Christmas Eve. She, too, magically woke up in her bed every Christmas morning. I remember the excitement in her eyes and the joy of seeing the wonderful gifts that had been left for her. Those days feel like just yesterday in my heart, but in my mind I know they are long gone and it sometimes makes me sad. I used to tell her at Christmas there are two holidays: one that is constantly changing as quickly as life itself, and one that never changes — the love of Our Father who sent baby Jesus to be born for us all on Christmas. Whenever I feel myself growing sad about life’s changes, I cling to Christ’s unchanging love. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Christmas this year will usher in more change for our family. But I know, as a believer, to give thanks in all things. So prayerfully and thankfully, I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas. With love from my family to yours, Merry Christmas.

The Wisemen knew to bring a gift. How about you? by TEARSA WINN During the Holiday Season, do you get so busy that sometimes your manners start to slip? Between cleaning, decorating, food and gift shopping one forgets about the invites you already RSVP too. Besides coming with good conversation that is non-confrontational a gift or offering to bring something is most thoughtful. The key to good conversation is in hearing the other person’s point of view rather than expressing your own. Social conversation can be almost anything now days but tone of voice plays a big part in the words that may come out of your mouth. Golden rule: when conversing at any time the word consideration for others should be at the forefront of your mind. One can say almost anything if the tone and feelings of others are considered first. You may find some topics ruffle your feathers, redirect the conversation or excuse yourself and find another less sensitive topic to discuss with others at the party. Colossians 4:6 says: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so you may know how to answer everyone.” When being invited to a party or formal dinner it’s important to offer to bring something like a dessert or appetizer. If your host says it’s not necessary then flowers already in a vase, a potted plant, bottle of wine, box of chocolates that you don’t expect them to share. A coffee table book is also a great gift. It is nice to attach a little card to the gift specially if were many guests invited. And a host always appreciates is when you offer to help with the dishes and cleaning up. Some of my best conversations with family and friends are in the kitchen washing, drying and putting away dishes after a wonderful meal. Proverbs 18:16 says: ”A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.” The host or hostess puts much thought into whom they invite, what to serve and when to have the gathering. Let’s not forget to show our appreciation for being invited. You can contact Tearsa Winn at 843-540-4323, email tearsawinn4life@gmail.com or visit www.S.E.T.Webs.com to sign up your student(s). 8

BAKING with Kids

R

oll up your sleeves. Put on some Christmas music. Don’t worry about the big mess that is getting ready to happen, and get ready to enjoy family fun. In our busiest season of the year, life always slows down a bit when we bake. It may be because of the anticipation of waiting the 10 minutes or so to see the finished masterpieces when the timer rings. Or the aroma that fills the kitchen and makes our mouths water way to long before the cookies are ready. Perhaps it’s the bright festive colors of red and green that excite our senses. Whatever it may be, kids are never too young or too old to get in the kitchen and laugh and decorate and bake up some memories. Here’s how we did ours, nothing fancy, just a couple of rolls of refrigerator cookies and lots of decorative supplies. Simple pleasures are the best.

BREAD

by LORENA BEST

CHRISTMAS IS MOST definitely my favorite baking/cooking time of the year! My mom would start baking and candy making the week following Thanksgiving storing and sharing throughout the month of December. She always had plates of goodies for family and friends to enjoy when they dropped by and Dad often depleted her supplies taking to work to share Christmas cheer.

Christmas Tree Veggie Pizza Ingredients 2 tubes crescent rolls 8 oz cream cheese, softened ½ cup sour cream ½ package powder ranch dressing seasoning 2 heads fresh broccoli florets chopped 1 red sweet bell pepper chopped into small pieces 1 yellow sweet bell pepper chopped into small pieces Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove crescent rolls from tube and cut into ¼ inch slices. I find it easier use white floss to cut my rolls to prevent dough from being squashed but a good serrated knife works well too. Gently slide floss under the dough lifting up and criss crossing to cut. Arrange sliced rolls on a greased cookie sheet to form a tree. I pat down a little to prevent dough from raising to high and to prevent gaps. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool. Beat cream cheese, sour cream, and ranch dressing until smooth. Spread over tree. Top tree with broccoli and pepper. Refrigerate. Christmas tree is easily served by pulling apart crescent rolls.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Mice Ingredients 1 12 ounce jar maraschino cherries with stems drained and dried on a paper towel 6 ounce dipping chocolate 12 ounce bag Hershey kisses unwrapped ½ cup sliced almonds 1 box writing icing small tubes (can be found in grocery baking aisle) wax or parchment paper Directions Line a cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper. Create a double boiler. A double boiler can be made by filling a saucepan about ¼ full with water that is brought to a simmer. A bowl is stacked snuggly on top of the saucepan. Bowl should not touch the bottom of saucepan. Melt chocolate slowly in bowl of double boiler being careful not to get any water or steam in chocolate. Chocolate will seize and get crumbly if accidentally get water in. Using stem, dip dry maraschino cherry into chocolate. Top cherry with a Hershey kiss to create mouse head. Place on cookie sheet. Tuck 2 sliced almonds for ears between the kiss head and cherry body. Use writing icing to dab eyes and nose with color of your choice. Refrigerate.

Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Krispie Balls Ingredients 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 cup chunky peanut butter 1 cup powder sugar 1 ½ cup to 1 3/4 cup rice krispies 12 ounce dipping chocolate wax or parchment paper Directions Line cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper. With a sturdy spoon, mix butter, peanut butter, powder sugar and rice krispies in a bowl. With hands, roll small balls the approximate size of a malt ball and place on a cookie sheet. Refrigerate. Next slowly melt chocolate in double boiler. Using fork, dip balls in chocolate. Refrigerate. December 2016

The 15-Minute Bag by HEIDI DALY

HURRICANE MATTHEW’S arrival changed the way many of us think on a day to day basis. When faced with an emergency situation or simply an unexpected trip, preparation is the key in ensuring you have what you need. A dear military friend instructed me years ago to prepare a “bug out bag” so that I am always prepared. It has definitely proved itself over the years, especially during the latest evacuation. Everyone’s bag will be different of course, but I will include a list of items that are essential In most. I have shared this with my clients over the years, mostly the residents who have multiple homes and are on the move. More than once I’ve heard, “I forgot all of my makeup and skin care products”! As we girls know, it’s a small fortune to replace these things and having them on hand alleviates many headaches. Have fun customizing your bag!

6) Travel Cup with lid.

1) A carry on bag devoted just to this

12) Pen and notepad.

2) Prescription medications. I suggest keeping a weeks worth of your medications in the bag

13) Extra set of important keys.

3) Small First Aid kit. I keep the basics in mine: antiseptic wipes, antihistamine, antacid, anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, antibiotic cream, eye drops and band-aids.

15)Disposable rain jacket.

4) Small flashlight. Comes in handy almost anywhere! 5) Snacks. I keep herbal tea, instant coffee, powdered creamer, non perishable snacks such as nuts and protein bars. Also, one or two bottles of water. 14

December 2016

7) Hygiene products. Toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, body wash/soap, shampoo/conditioner, brush/comb, hair essentials (headband or ponytail holders) feminine products, hand sanitizer, tissues and deodorant (the travel sizes are perfect!). 8) Skin Care products. Either purchase travel sizes of your favorite products or get the empty travel size containers and fill them up with your products (remember to refill them after a trip!) 9) Cellphone/Tablet charger. A cheap one will do the trick. 10)Change of clothing and undergarments! 11) Garbage bags. At least one for dirty or wet clothes.

14) Antibacterial wipes! One never knows... 16) Travel pillow. 17)A photo copy of drivers license. Heidi Daly is a Licensed Esthetics Instructor and Makeup Artist who has been a Hilton Head Island resident for over 31 years.

by JENN SCHMIDT

LET’S FACE IT: Working out is probably not a huge priority around Thanksgiving to you and yours. It’s bulking season. It’s family time. So I asked friends and family to share some of their favorite recipes with me so I can share with everyone, and I even put in some of my own. Enjoy!

Red Quinoa Salad with Peppers, Pumpkins Seeds, Cranberries, Cilantro and matchstick Carrots Ingredients: • 1 cup Red Quinoa • 1 each Red and Yellow Peppers (diced) • 2 Tablespoons. Raw Pumpkin Seeds • 1/3 cup Dried Cranberries • 1 bunch of Cilantro (chopped) • 1/3 cup Matchstick Carrots • 2 Tbspns Olive oil • 1 Tbspn Lemon • 2 tspn. Tamari • ½ tspn. Sea Salt • 1 tspn. Saffron Rice with Caramelized Onions, Slivered Almonds & Currants (Serves: 4 to 6) Ingredients: • 3/4 teaspoon crumbled saffron threads • 2 tablespoons boiling-hot water • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 1/2 cup slivered almonds (2 ounces) • 1 medium onion, chopped (1-1/2 to 2 cups) • 1-1/2 cups white or brown basmati rice (19 ounces) • 2-1/4 to 3 cups filtered water (2-1/4 cups of water for white basmati, 3 cups for brown basmati) • 1 organic bullion cube, no salt or low-sodium • 1-1/2 teaspoons sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper to taste • 1/4 cup dried currants (2 ounces) Prep Steps: • Soften saffron in hot water (2 tablespoons) in a small bowl. • Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a heavy pot over medium-high heat until it shimmers. • Fry almonds, stirring frequently, until golden, about 3 minutes. • Transfer with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. • Heat remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and sauté onion until golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer half of onion to a bowl. • Add rice to onion in pot and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add water, bullion cube, saffron mixture, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and bring to a simmer. • Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, until water is absorbed and rice is tender - 18-20 minutes for white basmati or 35 to 45 minutes for brown basmati. Let rice stand, covered, off heat 5 minutes. • While rice stands, stir almonds and currants into bowl with onion.

Make-Up by Emily Allyson

For this look the goal was to get an even skin tone, bright under eye and an overall fresh face of makeup suitable for daytime wear and photos. I started by prepping Terri’s skin with Embryoliss moisturizer followed by the Smashbox photo finish primer. For her foundation we used a custom blended highly pigmented cream base by Graftobian. Under the eye, I used a MAC Pro Longwear concealer. These are great because they do not crease or budge. I set both the under eye and skin with Laura Mercier powders (Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Secret Brightening Powder). Next I did a natural contour with a MAC sculpting powder and warmed up the cheeks with a nice peach undertoned blush. For the eyes I chose to keep the lid neutral and used a warm brown crease color followed by a mauvey purple shade to deepen the outer edge and underneath the lash line. I filled in her brows and added a soft rose lip color to finish off this look. For more information about Emily Allyson, visit www.EmilyAllyson.com.

Teeth by Maui Whitening

My teeth needed a lot of whitening and that is what I got at Maui. I was a little nervous having never done this before but it was very pleasant. In fact I dozed off while I was getting it done. The results were great! I didn't realize how yellow my teeth were until I saw how white they became. For more information about Maui Whitening, visit www.MauiWhiteningHHI.com. 18

Embracing

HOPE by CAROL LINNEMAN

“SOCORRO!” Kasandra screamed as she ran into the Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) clinic, gripping a baby and sobbing. The baby, however, was silent and appeared limp in the woman’s arms. Immediately the receptionist called for a nurse, rushing Kasandra and the child into the examination area. The nurse, while assessing the baby, tried to question distraught Kasandra. She summoned the volunteer pediatrician and Carlos, a volunteer interpreter fluent in Spanish and English. Carlos affirmed that the woman was, indeed, the child’s mother. He translated for the mother and the doctor the questions posed. “How long has your child been sick? Have you noticed any different behaviors or other symptoms leading up to this illness?” This scenario is part of what happens every day at VIM, magnified because of a lack of translators. Realizing that most people feel hopeless when they do not understand what is happening in the world around them, the Literacy Center partners with VIM in identifying families willing to change by taking classes on how to prepare for and interact with VIM. The program targets health and wellness and what an appropriate VIM appointment should look like—how to plan for and focus on the visit. Additional teaching expands to topics that include the importance of proper nutrition and exercise, weight control, causes of and identification of depression, illness prevention, and other challenges. Kasandra felt comfortable because Carlos remained with her during the physician’s examination. Her two-month old son, Ethan, was diagnosed with a bronchial infection, and she thankfully accepted medication for him. However, the highlight of the visit came when Carlos explained the Literacy Center program to Kasandra. She physically jumped at the opportunity as she bounced Ethan up and down! 24

December 2016

That evening, in her most exuberant voice, Kasandra shared the details of her day with her husband, Nicolas. She bubbled, “We will no longer worry about when to go to the doctor or what to say. We have help now, Nicolas. I am going to get smart—you will see! I will learn how to take care of our family. This school, the Literacy Center, will teach me. It’s perfect, Nicolas. And, Nicolas, we both can take other classes at the Center to help us learn how to speak, read, and write English. Oh, Nicolas, if you could just speak English you could become that supervisor your boss talked about! And, Nicolas, we could learn how to read to Ethan in English—to help him learn English! It’s exciting, Nicolas. I am so happy.” All Nicolas could do was listen and wait for the chance to respond. The opportunity eventually arrived, “Okay, Kasandra, we will do it. I trust you. You always know what is best for us. Thinking about learning English and getting a better job for us makes me happy, too!” Kasandra enrolled in the Literacy Center/VIM program as well as the morning classes in English, and Nicolas enrolled in the evening English classes. The Center’s hope is that learning will become a priority in this family’s life. Nicolas and Kasandra’s hope is the security of a positive tomorrow. Statistics prove the importance of literacy. The Center, aware of these statistics, is branching out from adult learning, adding children’s classes and a focus on teaching English to the family unit. DRIVING in the right DIRECTION by LISA RICHARDSON South Coastal FCA A BORN AND RAISED Carolina girl, Hilton Head Island has been home for Anna Lesemann Eddy since she was a preschooler. A student at Hilton Head Christian Academy since 1st grade, she will graduate at the end of this school year with more than her diploma, but along with six state championship golf titles in the bag – her golf bag that is. Earning those in the place that boasts some of the top golf courses in the world, certainly is not “par for the course” for your average 18 year old. “My dad bought me my first set of clubs when I was 8 years old, and since then, he has coached and encouraged me to reach my full potential. Fellow classmate Jamie Hubbard and I started the first girls golf team at Hilton Head Christian Academy when we were in sixth grade.” In just a few years, they won back-to-back state championships, in 2015 and again this past 2016 fall season. Anna also won the individual title in 2015. If that wasn’t enough, she started playing for the HHCA boys’ team in 8th grade as well, where the team secured three consecutive state championships from 2013-015. Anna is a six-time All-State honoree, the 2016 Trusted Choice “Big I” Qualifier where she competed in California in August and the 2016 American Junior Golf Association “Judie” Award winner for exemplifying qualities as kindness and respect. Anna also just recently signed to continue to play golf at the collegiate level at Wofford College. Quite impressive — especially to those of us who are challenged by 9 holes of putt-putt. Despite all of those achievements on the links, Anna clarifies that golf does not define her. “I have learned that the joy found in Jesus Christ is much greater than the number next to my name on a scorecard. I pray that God will use me to lead others to Him, perhaps through becoming a nurse or teacher in the future, which she aspires to be.” God will reveal his plan. For now, God certainly is using her as she influences her peers through various leadership roles at her school including for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), as Zonta Club president, and the Life on Life program. The principles used in golf such as patience, trusting the process, and hard work can be also be used in everyday life. More importantly, God’s Word is guiding and profitable for our everyday life. Romans 12:2- serves as a guiding daily principle for her. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” This verse guides me, because it is a constant 26

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

December 2016

reminder that God is much greater than the things of this world. The abundant life that comes with “the renewal of your mind” is so fulfilling and a life worth living. It reminds me that God’s plan for my life is good and acceptable and perfect. From now until she’s off to college, Anna will enjoy spending time doing her favorite island things, like being at the beach and on the water. “The island serves as a constant reminder of how big and beautiful my God is.” In addition, she’ll spend as much time as she can with her family; dad, owner of Atlantic States Management; mom, a teacher, who serves as her inspiration; and 3 siblings, Caroline, Jacob and Ben. “Being the oldest of four children has been such a blessing. I have absolutely loved having a sister and brothers that bring so much laughter to my life. The memories that we have created together are unforgettable. I am excited for the new chapter that will come and seeing what God does through me, but it will be hard to leave behind my family and friends.” And naturally, she’ll look to “wedge” in one more state championship title this spring as well. May God continue to bless this lovely young, Lowcountry lady.

A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS STORY I SAT IN THE KITCHEN CHAIR and stared at the wood burning stove. A pot of water sat on top with a sweet potato wrapped in foil along side. We had wall heaters that heated each room but I knew they were way to small for Santa to get through. So I knew he had to make his entrance through the pipe of the wood burning stove. I personally would choose the door but I suppose if I lived in the North Pole a little heat at each house might be refreshing. I didn’t need to judge his motives. I just wanted to be there when he made his entrance, and after that, well, I had my plans. I had everything all organized. Right down to the last detail. I had cleaned out the bottom of one of mamas cabinets and put an old coat in there. I taped some string to the bottom of Santas cookie plate. I was going to tie the other end of the string to my finger. This way when he picked the plate up it would ingeniously wake me up and then it was going to be hello Santa. I had helped mama in the kitchen most of the day baking pecan pies and cakes and cookies. I had a lot of bad to make up for this year. I personally thought my suspension record had improved. I had only got in trouble for fighting three times so far, and as of February I would be allowed to ride the bus again. This was a great improvement from last year. Who knew that a cherry bomb would blow up a toilet? As the sun went down behind the trees and the last pie came out of the oven I began to feel sleepy. I must have dozed off be30

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

December 2016

cause I woke up in my bed where my parents would have put me. Was I too late? Had Santa escaped my capture? I quietly crept back into the kitchen. Our tiny Christmas tree was still standing in the corner void of any gifts. I climbed into my cabinet and pulled my string attached to the cookie plate in with me and tied it to my finger. Not long after I heard the sound of bells outside, soft at first then louder. I was a little scared and a lot excited. The wood stove began to rattle. My heart pounded fast. Then it happened — the string tied to my finger began to tug just like a fish on a hook. I had him. My own personal Santa. No more getting in trouble on the school bus. I was going to own the school bus. No more last one in line for milk in the lunchroom. I was going to be escorted to the front of the line by the one and only Santa Claus. All I had to do is lock him in the barn out back and feed him candy and popcorn all day. I jumped out of my cabinet to offer the big guy my sweet deal. It was a bit darker than I had planned and I stumbled and fell. Santa turned and smiled at me while munching on the cookie and holding the string in his hand. My finger moved as he moved his hand, like he was pulling on the string, then leaned back and laughed. Then he disappeared. I lay on the floor realizing I had been played by Santa. After I saw my presents by the tree it made it a little better, but then I realized there was always next year and I felt even better than before.

Faith in God Not an Object by MICAH PEPPERS

“SO FIRST OFF, I’M OK.” Those were the first words my husband said to me when I answered the phone around eight one April evening. Those words brought strong mixed emotions. I was glad he was ok, but clearly something had happened. My husband flies the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in the United States Marine Corp. It’s an unbelievable aircraft that I’m confident will protect our country when needed, but it is still a man-made object. In April 2016, at seven months pregnant, my husband left for work at around seven in the morning. His days are typically a minimum of twelve hours, so when he had not arrived home by seven that evening, I was not concerned. Being in my third trimester, exhaustion was an understatement, and at eight o’clock, I crawled into bed. Fifteen minutes later, my phone rang. It was an Augusta, Georgia, number. Generally, I rarely answer numbers I do not recognize, but for some reason, I answered this one. I heard nothing but static on the other end, so I hung up. A few seconds later, the same number called back. This time the connection was clear, and it was my husband, Jesse. He told me there had been an issue with the jet, and a select group of Marines were driving down to Augusta to get him. He wouldn’t say much else, other than he would see me in the morning. Over the next few days, he began filling me in on the details. While flying a mission, his jet had developed a fuel issue, and he was given less than two minutes to land before he would need to eject. Fortunately, he was able to land at the nearby Augusta Regional Airport. With only seconds to spare, he touched down on the runway, while the airport authorities delayed the outgoing passenger planes until he had safely landed. Thereafter, he taxied off the runway, and when he felt he was out of the way, he brought the jet to a hault. At that very moment, the entire plane’s engine died. He would later tell me that it was one of those moments he couldn’t really explain. It was simply a God moment. But he was safe, and six months later, he was awarded an Air Medal for his quick thinking in avoiding what could have been a major disaster. After that, I took time to reflect, and lift up in prayer for how thank32

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

December 2016

ful I was that my husband was unharmed. Although I was so proud of him, he was worth so much more to me than a medal. Less than a month after receiving the Air Medal, and while flying yet another mission, his jet caught fire mid-air. This was the third time an F35 had caught fire, but the first for the Marine Corps, and it happened to once again be my husband in the cockpit. This incident was considered a Class A mishap, meaning damage totaled $2 million or more on this $100 million dollar aircraft. Two Class A mishaps, and the pilot goes under investigation. Neither of us was worried. He knew he had done absolutely nothing to cause either incident, but it still weighed on him. Everyone in the Corps would know about this, and the questions he had to answer were in depth. Why had both of these incidents happened to him? Jesse and I talked about other employment options for the future. Maybe this was a sign that he should get out of the Marine Corps, and do something different. He could get a nine to five job, and I would have a husband who I knew was safe; although nothing is ever guaranteed. But that is not the plan God had for us. Jesse had joined the military knowing the potential risks. I married him knowing that being a military spouse was not going to be easy. So, together, we decided to continue on this path before us. As Christians, we believe we were placed here for a purpose. God had protected him twice for reasons still unknown, but we have made the decision to put our trust in our Lord and not a man-made object. God doesn’t make mistakes. Micah Peppers resides in Beaufort, SC with her husband Jesse, their son, Maddox, and furbaby, Jett. Jesse is an F35 pilot, and Micah owns her own business, Tutor Doctor.

With everyone being as health conscientious as they are, the pet industry has really evolved by offering more health and wellness products for our precious pets. At Yuppy Puppy City Kitty, our main focus is just that. Grab the treats you have in your house right now and look at the ingredients. Surprised, aren’t you? Typical treats off of a large pet store shelf can contain 20 plus ingredients and some you cannot even pronounce! Yuppy Puppy City Kitty makes it simple; we only use good stuff, so when your best friend needs a reward, you can feel awesome about giving it to them! We offer healthy and high quality choices for pets and their passionate owners. Our products are made in small batches and do not sit in a warehouse waiting to be shipped to pet stores around the country. We have a variety of products for both your furbulous feline and cuddly canine! • Holistic Pet Food with no preservatives, grain free options, no by-products, corn, soy or GMO’s, sourced and made in the USA.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS FOR PETS TRAVELING DURING the holidays can be stressful enough, but when you’re traveling with fur babies, some extra steps might be needed to ensure a safety and happiness. Here are some great tips when traveling this Christmas: • Dog restraints or seat belts are useful for preventing your dog from roaming around the car and being a distraction to the driver, but they haven’t been reliably shown to protect dogs during a crash. • Bring special toys that remind them of home. A soft blanket for them to hide in can bring comfort. A pet carrier that they have gotten used to prior to the journey could be helpful as well. • Stop frequently to allow your pet to exercise and eliminate. But never permit your pet to leave the car without a collar, ID tag and leash. • Air travel can be particularly dangerous for animals with “pushed in” faces (the medical term is “brachycephalic”), such as bulldogs, pugs and Persian cats. Their short nasal passages leave them especially vulnerable to oxygen deprivation and heat stroke. • Your pet’s carrier will have to pass through the security screening along with you. You have two options: Either be sure your pet is securely harnessed so you can safely contain them outside their carrier while it’s being x-rayed, or request a special secondary screening that won’t require you to take them out of their carrier.

• 100% human grade meat treats with no preservatives, grain free, no by-products, corn, soy or GMO’s. • Wellness products that are all natural ingredients that support overall health and help with various issues such as skin and coat, joint health, periodontal health and the immune system. • Spa products that are soap free and infused with essential oils. • Keepsake and fun play products. • Walk Me Safe LED collars, leashes and harnesses. • Outer Wear, Formal Wear and Pawty Wear. Gift giving? No worries! We have an assortment of gift baskets for even the most finicky feline or picky pup! Custom made baskets are also available! HOPE 34

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

December 2016

DO YOU REMEMBER the hope you had as a child at Christmas? Not completely understanding how Santa could make his rounds delivering toys to all the children in the entire world in one night, but believing just the same in order not to miss out on your share of the gifts. Do you remember the day that you stepped out of the innocence of childhood and into the cruel reality of the truth. This is probably the best life lesson we can learn. God has given us some pretty cool things to enjoy in life. Family, friendships, tangibles, but all of these are things to enjoy here and now. He also promises even better things for later when we go home to be with him. The problem is sometimes we are having so much fun here that we forget about the reality of tomorrow. We don’t plan for our future in heaven but instead we plan for our earthly events. This Christmas season I urge you, as the spirit of hope once again envelops our children, let it also fill you. Live your days to their fullest in order to please our Lord. Know these moments are fleeting so enjoy them to their fullest in order to glorify Him. Cling to the reality and promises of a bright future. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Honor your father and mother. Forgive the way you want to be forgiven. Remember the reality of Christ’s birth on that holy day. Be thankful for the hope and blessed assurance and peace we have in His name.

What is Frankincense? By HEIDI BECK As we begin the month of December with Christmas approaching, I’m reminded of the three gifts that were presented to Christ at His birth – Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. These gifts were fitting for our King, they were a profound symbolic gesture of Christ’s birth. Of all the gifts, perhaps the most valuable was Frankincense, it was not simply used for aromatics but was revered in biblical times for many health benefits. Fast forward two thousand years and we still rejoice in the birth of Christ and our culture today is beginning to realize the impact that a simple gift can hold. Matthew 2:11: “And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Frankincense is a rare oil that is produced from the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree. The rarity comes from the difficulty in harvesting the oil which is compounded by the fact that it can only be harvested every 2 or 3 years to ensure the tree remains healthy. These trees when properly cared for can produce the resin for hundreds of years. doTerra’s Frankincense comes from Oman and Somalia, where the Company tirelessly works to ensure the local farmers are paid fairly and their families are positively impacted. Today Frankincense is aptly named the king of essential oils due to its vast and powerful benefits. It is widely used for its ability to beautify and rejuvenate our skin when applied topically. I use it under my moisturizer daily and I love the way it brightens my skin. The healing properties will reduce appearances of imperfections and aids in scar healing and rejuvenating the skin. Our society today is stressful and just plain busy that’s why many of my customers turn to Frankincense. The oil’s perfume promotes feelings of peace, relaxation and overall wellness. Whether diffusing the oil or applying topically it will aid in reducing feelings of negativity and uneasiness. The chemical components of Frankincense help to bring out positive feelings and balance your mood. “Star of the East” diffuser blend: One drop Frankincense, One drop Sandalwood, Two drops Grapefruit When we leave the stress in our lives unchecked it begins to tear our bodies down, so you guessed it Frankincense to the rescue. Frankincense, when taken internally promotes cellular health and immunity, it is used by many for inflammation in the body. Several of my customers drop a couple drops under the tongue daily for the systemic response they receive for inflammation in their body. As you can see the “king of oils” is truly an essential oil for the mind, body and spirit. The wise men understood the power of the gifts of the earth in Frankincense, but they also realized that nothing can replace putting our faith and reliance in Christ Jesus our Lord, He is the ultimate healer and protector.

A NEW Chapter FOR YEARS, I USED Sunday night to psych myself up for Monday and the long work week in corporate life. Driving most days thinking about what needs to get done, how to solve problems, what or who would need my attention, and dreading being inside in a building or conference room all week. And, of course, all the stress that came along put my mind in a constant buzz. Blessed to have had a successful corporate life, and blessed to have all that in the past now! Have you ever driven somewhere and don’t remember getting there? Your mind was preoccupied on a thousand other things or it was just so routine, you didn’t think about it at all. What if you are living your life like that? Not even conscious of what is happening or what’s going on around you. I’ve been there before. Thinking about that, we are missing so much. Starting a new chapter in life a few years ago here in the Lowcountry, I began working hard at being present or at least more observant. Taking baby steps, as nothing new is easy, I now subscribe to Mindful, a magazine which is all about taking time for what matters. I read about techniques and concepts to practice. Now, as I ride on the Broad River Bridge I notice how the color of the Spartina Grass changes in the seasons. I think of my good friend, Mike, as he loves the coastal waters. I see the occasional dolphin and all the different birds. I would have missed all that wonder years ago being preoccupied with busy stuff. An interesting little article states, “The idea of being mindful -- being present, being more conscious of life as it happens -- may seem con-

tradictory to those who are used to sacrificing living for pursuing their goals, but cultivating mindfulness will help you achieve your goals and enjoy life more. In fact, you’re more productive when you’re mindful. But more importantly, being present is undoubtedly the only way to enjoy life to the fullest. (Babauta, Leo. “10 Steps to Mindfulness.” Reader’s Digest. 2016.) Hmm...maybe this concept is worth trying. Now, making a conscious effort to better live in the present moment does take effort for me. I am still very busy running my own business, meeting new people, learning new things, but being more observant, if you will, of the moment and my surroundings. I thank God every day for the quiet mornings, green trees and sunshine as I drive to appointments, the birds singing, my feet on Ruff as he lay below my desk, my lime and grapefruit tree in the yard, appreciating my visiting father reading the newspaper in my office while I write this article. Simple pleasures that I don’t overlook anymore. I don’t fret about the stressful days or weeks to come. I pause to thank God for the blessing after I meet someone new I like or a after a meeting that went well or when I get a nice new sales order. So, try this mindfulness stuff. As you go about your day, look around you, listen more, connect to people and your surroundings. Look up at the sky. Look around you and notice the people, the colors, and the sounds. Smell the fresh air. See if it makes a difference in your life. I think it will. I thank God for my new approach to life and pray to keep working and absorbing all the blessings in my life!

The Birth of Jesus

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed[b] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Finding JOY, PATIENCE & PRAYER in Every Situation by ELIZABETH VICTORIA WINN HOW DO I REJOICE when everything is changing? How do I develop an attitude of gratitude when I am overwhelmed by the decisions that have to be made and the things that need to be done? The clock is ticking, I have to decide now where I will be living, learning and who I will be in the next year. But how? Change is uncomfortable and uncertainty, intimidating. In nine short months I will be living in a new city with new people and learning new things. There are not enough hours in a day nor days in a year to fit everything that I need and want to do to prepare for this grand adventure. Submitting my college applications, I took the first step toward my future. With a click of a button, my college applications were out of my hands and handed over to the scrupulous admissions officers and to God. Growing up is difficult. I am 18 years old and embarking on a whole new adventure. This first chapter of my adult life ushers in civic responsibilities, demands maturity and expects that I have everything figured out. News flash, I don’t have it all figured out. But hey, let me know if you meet someone who truly does. Essays, forms, deadlines, laughter and tears have filled these past few months and it can be hard to rejoice in the midst of such stresses. With each day growing shorter than the last, things don’t get done. Whether it be forgetting to type up a chemistry lab or go to a sports practice or spend time with God. This semester I had to give up things— things that I love—so that I could prepare for this next era of my life and say goodbye to the one I’m graduating from. After all the stress, the study sessions, tests, essays and applications were completed, I surrendered everything to God. And now, I wait. “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”—Romans 12:12 42

I don’t claim to be a model student or Christian. I struggle with the same doubts and insecurities that everyone else encounters. I don’t claim to be a model student or Christian. I struggle with the same doubts and insecurities that everyone else encounters. These uncertainties, these unknowns, trust them to the renowned God. Find patience. Have faith. Society has taught people to rejoice when times are good, but what about when they aren’t? The church has taught people to pray, but are the prayers prayed sincere?

A friend once told me, “…to have joy you have to rejoice in God first.” Forget the circumstances. Rejoice! In the midst of trials or blessings give thanks to the One who made everyone and everything. Praise the God who saved the world from itself and gave life to the dying. Pray prayers of sincerity. Life isn’t perfect and growing up isn’t easy. But, the Lord has come. Therefore, I will rejoice, no matter what happens
