Welcome to Lady Lowcountry MY DAD WAS ONE OF FIVE KIDS. So we spent every Thanksgiving at my grandparents’ house across the corn field, all 27 of us. The entire house seemed to come alive with kids in every room. The aroma of turkey and ham with red eye gravy was a constant reminder of what was waiting for us in the near future. The men folk would sit in the den and carry on important conTERRI BILOTTA versation while the mamas in the kitchen scurried around with terri@ladylowcountry.com big bowed aprons stirring and whisking, laughing and chatting. Us kids knew to be scarce or we would be put to work putting ice in the glasses or setting the table. When the dinner bell rang, we all bolted into the dinning room to find our place in a huge circle of very tall adults. When we quieted down and bowed our heads, we had group prayer. Each year we waited in silence to see which kid would be selected to sit at the adult table. Nobody ever stayed at the adult table very long. About midway through the meal, the unlucky kid would always show up with their plate in hand. Sometimes it was because they got in trouble, sometimes it was because they were just miserable, but every year we all got a big laugh out of it. Dinner and dessert went by so fast and almost always ended with one of the boys doing something gross that made everyone run outside for fresh air and a game of hide and go seek. These Thanksgivings would soon change, as life always does. We soon grew up and fashioned our own Thanksgiving traditions — some very similar and some quite different, but all of which are our very own. So, as the Bilotta family prepares for our version of Thanksgiving/early Christmas with my brother and sister-in-law from Mississippi, we wish you and your family a blessed holiday filled with love for our Lord Jesus Christ and each other.

Is Your Faith Dressed in Manners? by TEARSA WINN Manners being the rules of etiquette are much more then rules to follow. To have manners is to be considerate. By valuing that someone set a nice table, considerately complimenting them for their efforts is manners. So, why don’t young people know what fork to use? Why don’t they recognize that when they come to a meal that they have not helped prepare that it is their obligation to bring a nice conversation with them to make the meal pleasant? Are you aware of these manners? Recently, I taught a class at a school and at the end of the meet and greet lesson I asked the students what they learned. A first grader raised her hand and said, “I learned how to make friends.” The first tool of etiquette is to know how to introduce oneself and one to another. Next, we learn to use words of appreciation such as: “please”, “thank you” and “your welcome”. Most importantly we need to discuss how they affect each and every one of us. These acknowledgements show that we value and appreciate one another. Table manners follow. The holidays are just around the corner. There will be parties and dinners with family and friends. It is important for everyone to be considerate at these social events. The book of Philippians is filled with tips of what the everyday Christian should look like. The manners’ we portray shows us how we are drawn together for the sake of Christs’ mission. Philippians 1:27 says, “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Philippi ultimately becomes a prosperous Roman Colony. It was one of the first churches that Paul planted. If the people of Philippi were able to learn Christian manners from Paul and be successful at it shouldn’t are children and grandchildren be able to learn manners from us? Are you thinking now that maybe you need to brush up on your manners? For Christmas you may want to give your elementary children, teens, grandchildren or even yourself the gift of manners. Sign them or yourself up for a 4 or 8 week session starting in the spring at S.E.T. for Life Etiquette with Tearsa Winn. Email: tearsawinn4life@gmail.com or visit the website www.set4life.webs.com to see what topics the classes cover and how you or someone important to you would benefit from the socials. Choosing to be

THANKFUL by WENDY FARR DID YOU KNOW THANKFULNESS IS A CHOICE? When I was growing up, my family celebrated Thanksgiving every year with a large group of my cousins and Aunts and Uncles. We gathered together, played a competitive football game, and then ate a huge meal. I have some wonderful memories of the fun, laughter and scrumptious food we enjoyed together. Over the years, all of us siblings got married and had children of our own, and lived in different states. Our extended family still tried to get together for Thanksgiving as often as we could, and we maintained the traditions we had when growing up. As adults, we also added our own ‘traditions’ of music, dancing, and singing. With parents who loved to dance and the rest of us being rock star singers (we thought), it became a routine part of our celebration. It was easy to be thankful for these wonderful family times. But then things changed for me with my divorce, and the Thanksgiving holidays

10

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

November 2016

transitioned from big family gatherings to sometimes just me. As many single parents know, the holidays are shared between two sets of parents, so my children were with me every other year. That was so hard in every way. My faith in God has always been an important part of my life, and I consider myself a thankful person; but honestly, it was easier to be thankful on the holidays when it was the year I had my kids with me. I discovered in those off years that if I kept my focus on what was NOT happening, it was very easy to be discouraged. When I began going down this negative path, other emotions followed along like despair, self-pity, anger, and even bitterness. This was not good for me and not very honoring to God. I finally came to understand the power of choice when faced with discouragement. I could choose to focus on negativity, or choose to focus on thankfulness toward God for all that was good and positive in my life. When I kept my eyes fixed on Him, thankfulness poured out of my heart. I then thought of a remedy where I made lists of things I was thankful for, and it turned into an endless list of blessings. I call it “My Thankful List.” Soon, I began to feel better and lighter, and I found myself smiling. My whole attitude changed, and words of thankfulness flowed out of my mouth, saying things like, “God’s mercy and goodness is so great!” and “He loves and blesses me beyond my wildest expectations!” My Thankful List also comes in handy any day of the year! When I choose thankfulness, even though my situation may not change, I do!

BAKING

BAKING AND DECORATING cookies and cupcakes with the kids is a fun and creative way to enjoy family time. Today, our pilgrim cookies looked like soldiers. Tomorrow, perhaps a snowman.

Turkey Cupcakes Ingredients 1 box Betty Crocker SuperMoist yellow cake mix or your favorite flavor cake mix Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box 2 containers Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy milk chocolate frosting 1 tube (4.25 oz) Betty Crocker white decorating icing 1 tube (0.68 oz) Betty Crocker brown decorating gel Candy corn Betty Crocker chocolate candy sprinkles Directions Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Make, bake and cool cake as directed on box for 24 cupcakes. Frost cupcakes with frosting. Place remaining frosting in corner of resealable freezer plastic bag. Snip off small corner of bag. To decorate each cupcake, pipe 1-inch mound of frosting on 1 side of cupcake to look like head of turkey. Make eyes with white decorating icing and brown decorating gel; add candy corn for beak. To make feathers, pipe frosting on opposite side to hold candy corn; place candy corn upright on frosting to look like feathers. Sprinkle chocolate candy sprinkles near head and at base of feathers. If desired, add candy corn at base of cupcake for feet. Store loosely covered.

Pilgrim Cookies Ingredients 1 cup cream cheese ready-to-use frosting Small zippered plastic bag 12 round sugar cookies 18 cream-filled sugar wafers, any color Gumdrops (optional) 24 Skittles, any color 12 jelly beans, any color Tinted or toasted coconut Colored decorating frosting, any color Directions Using your favorite sugar cookie recipe or cookie dough mix, bake a dozen cookies and allow them to cool. Cover the tops of cookies evenly with white frosting. Using a sharp knife, cut six sugar wafers in half crosswise. Place one wafer half at the top edge of each frosted cookie, press to adhere. Next, place an

uncut wafer just below the half wafer, creating a hat. Take your colored frosting and place in a plastic bag. Then pipe a thin line of colored decorating frosting where the two wafers meet. Attach a gumdrop to the hat if desired, you can also use a Skittle or jelly bean. Add Skittles for eyes and a jelly bean for a nose. Using the decorating frosting, draw a mouth. Press coconut into the frosting for hair. To tint coconut: place coconut in a small zippered plastic bag and add a small amount of yellow food coloring. Rub coconut and coloring inside bag until coconut is tinted to desired color. To toast coconut: place coconut in a single layer in a dry skillet over medium heat or on a baking sheet in a 350 degree oven for 5 to 8 minutes or until golden brown. Use any remaining frosting in bag to pipe on dots in the center of eyes, eye lashes, decorative details on hats and other features, if desired.

BREAD

by LORENA BEST

THE CORNUCOPIA, also sometimes referred to as a horn of plenty, is a symbol of all of the good things that we have to enjoy. As we start this holiday season, let us focus on the joys and blessings even though the circumstances of life remain imperfect.

Bread Cornucopia This step-by-step instruction will have your Thanksgiving table looking like you hired a professional bread baker! Cornucopia can be made several days in advance and then filled with fruit, veggies, breadsticks, or even fried chicken, as my friend Stacy did when I brought her one. I still smile and laugh when I think of that fried chicken horn of plenty. Ingredients foil wrap oil nonstick cooking spray 1.25 liter of water or soda to use to make mold 3-4 cans of ready-to-bake pizza crust egg wash (1 egg plus 1 teaspoon of water) Directions First step is to create a mold to wrap bread around. Tear off a sheet of foil that is approximately twice the length of your bottle. Wrap your bottle at an angle creating a giant foil cone. Continue to add layers approximately 4 until mold feels thick enough to hold shape. Last layer should be as smooth as possible folding over the edges to create rim. Remove bottle and stuff with foil wadded up into balls for extra support. Spray entire outside of foil mold with cooking spray. Next step is to form dough around mold. One can at a time, roll dough out with a rolling pin so it’s a little thinner. Cut dough into one inch strips using a pizza cutter or knife. Now you have some creative options. If you want more of a simple look just wrap your strips starting bottom side about one inch from opening rim (this will make it easier to remove foil after baking). Make certain to overlap strips so there will be no gaps once baked. I prefer to cut strips so that all seams

are on bottom. For a more detailed look, cornucopia can be covered in braided dough. Pinch the beginning ends of three strips and begin braiding pinching ends also so they do not unravel. Then wrap each braid around form beginning one inch from rim continuing all the way down your mold. Brush bread with egg wash to glue strips together and provide a deep golden brown color. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-35 minutes. Allow to cool thoroughly, then gently remove foil form.

Apple & Goat Cheese Ladyfingers

Microwave Spiced Nuts

Ingredients 12 ladyfinger cookies 2 apples ( I prefer gala or honeycrisp for their crunchy sweetness) lemon lime soda such as sprite or lemon juice for dipping apples to prevent browning 2 oz. goat cheese honey for drizzling 1/2 cup chopped sweet and spicy pecans (or use the recipe on the right) 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary

Ingredients 1/4 cup melted butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 3 cups pecans

Directions Peel and thinly slice apples dipping them in soda or lemon juice. Spread each ladyfinger with softened goat cheese. Top with slice of apple. Drizzle with honey and then sprinkle with chopped pecans and rosemary.

Directions Mix melted butter, brown sugar, and spices in a medium microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove from microwave and stir. Mix in pecans and microwave on high for an additional 4-5 minutes stirring every 2 minutes. Pour and spread onto a buttered sheet of foil wrap or a sheet of parchment paper. Cool. November 2016

Following My

CALLING by HEIDI DALY

The Things you are Passionate about are not random, they are your Calling. — Fabienne Fredrickson

I WAS 40 YEARS OLD and started noticing “changes” happening to my skin. Knowing that I would inevitably become high maintenance as the years progressed, I made the decision to enter an esthetics program at the South Carolina Massage and Esthetics Institute in Bluffton, SC so that I would have the ability to care for my own skin. Ecclesiastes 9:10 — Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that this was truly my passion. As the years progressed and I became more confident in my new found love, I spent my spare time researching all I could get my hands on. I have always believed that knowledge is POWER! The more I read, whether it be on skin health, product ingredients, nutrition, makeup or new procedures, the more I yearned to learn. So many of these aspects tied into my career and quite frankly, I realized that the more wisdom I gained, the more trust and faith my clients put in me! I am a born nurturer so naturally it was then that I decided to get my esthetics instructor license, and a new passion was born. This new venture prompted me to read even more so that I could offer as much pertinent information to my students. I have taught at the International Spa Institute (formerly SCMEI) for years and have had the pleasure and honor of mentoring the most amazing women ranging in ages from late teens to women well into their 60s. These women, much like myself, long to embark on a new career and follow their dreams and I am blessed to be able to be a part in this metamorphosis. I took a break from teaching two years ago as I got the job of my dreams traveling the world as a Stylist with an online broadcasting company doing hair makeup and wardrobe for 9 male broadcasters. This was an experience of a lifetime which led me to places I could only have dreamed about and ultimately working with some of the most amazing producers 16

Heidi Daly is a Licensed Esthetics Instructor and Makeup Artist who has been a Hilton Head Island resident for over 31 years. and crew a girl could ask for. It allowed my creativity to blossom and enhance the career I had already fallen in love with. This industry allows us with the ability to improve people’s self image, help them de-stress and give of ourselves. I have always wanted to help those in some kind of need and “give back” to the community. I was blessed with a phone call in April of this year from Dana Spotto, “Heidi, I have recently purchased the International Spa Institute and would love for you to rejoin our team.” Little did I realize at the time that God was putting me together with this dynamic young woman who shares the same faith and has a similar vision. Dana, like myself, has a calling to give back to the community, and we are currently choosing organizations to offer facials and massages through our student clinics. There are so many groups that serve our area that can benefit from a little “spa love.” If you are considering a change of career, I am proof that it is never too late to find your passion and make a difference in people’s lives. God would not have put a dream in your heart if he hadn’t already given you everything you need to fulfill it. Monthly MESSAGE

Though Damaged, We Are

STRONGER

I STOOD IN MY KITCHEN savoring my last cold soda, standing beside my island filled with defrosted delicacies that were slowly making their way into the garbage sack. My dogs and cats at the height of confusion as I threw perfectly good bacon and milk into the trash. My pioneer woman spirit of yesterday was quickly dwindling away as I reached for the unresponsive light switch yet another time. Hurricane Matthew’s visit had come as predicted but overstayed his welcome by smashing a group of trees onto my roof. We had made it out in one piece, but our home did not fare the same. Today was only the second day after the storm. Our spirits lifted as we went outside and watched a huge Palmetto Electric truck pass by. That meant the fallen trees up and down our road had somehow been lifted. My appreciation for the scripture about everybody working together came to mind. 1 Corinthians 12:21 — The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” I have become so aware of how much we need each other. The presence of the National Guard, local police and sheriff, fire department, state troopers and local townspeople who stayed behind to serve has been incredible. Neighbors have been coming out in force to lend a helping hand. The sound of chainsaws will buzz through the air again today. As I bend down to pick up another tree branch, I am happy and thankful that Sir Matthew has departed. He has left behind a nest of people with a lot of work to do but a people who are now much stronger in faith in God and unity with one another. 18

Time for

THANKS THE FIRST THANKSGIVING WAS a three-day feast. The pilgrims provided the corn and the neighboring Indians came over and brought the meat. The Autumn harvest feast was a time to break bread and enjoy family, friends and good food. It was a time of giving thanks to God for the harvest and praying forward for the upcoming year. At least, this is the way it has been told to us for centuries. As a person of Indian descent, I have been told a different story. But as an American, I love the traditional thanksgiving story. We all can agree it was a hard life for the early Christian settlers who separated themselves to seek a better life. Winters were cold and unforgiving and the summers scorching. So they deserved a little sit-down dinner at the end of harvest. Today, modern conveniences have made Thanksgiving preparations quite a bit easier and much faster. Traditional Thanksgiving food — turkey and dressing, ham and biscuits with cranberries on the side — always shows up in abundance on my table. We enjoy sweet potato, chocolate, and pecan pie with ice cream on top. After our meal, we settle in to visit and fight off the impending food coma. So as we loosen our trouser buttons this Thanksgiving, let’s remember to give thanks to our Father for our many blessings like, our freedoms, our abundance, and our family. Enjoy!

The ROOTS of THANKSGIVING IN 1827, SARAH JOSEPH HALE — a noted magazine editor and prolific writer of many things, one of which was the famous nursery rhyme “Mary had a little lamb” — launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published articles and newsletters to anyone who would read them, including senators, diplomats, politicians and governors. Her determination and focus paid off. Finally, Abraham Lincoln agreed to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. At the height of the Civil War — in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation” — he scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November. It was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

A Faithful Calling

By STEPHANIE JAMISON-VOID I’m the oldest of 4 children and have enjoyed being the oldest and the leader for my siblings. I’m not sure if my parents thought of me that way, but for some reason, I led by example from a young girl. I was the captain of my high school basketball team and a leader in my college sports as well. We never really know what we are chosen to do, but God has a plan. He knows our purpose and our calling. We as his children must find that path and listen to what we are truly called to do. I believe this in my heart. I have tried other careers, jobs so to speak. But, nothing has been more fulfilling than owning my own business in mental health. I have been blessed to have a loving husband and God also saw fit to bless my womb to have one son. But, then he knew my love and desire to have more so he gave me 5 more children once I married Stacey. So, he is a God of much love for his children. 26

GOD is our ANCHOR in the

F

by LISA RICHARDSON South Coastal FCA

FOR US IN THE LOWCOUNTRY, these past few weeks have been a challenging time during, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Like most people, I left my home of 17 years, located in Bluffton, the home that has been our 1st and the one that all 3 of my daughters have been raised in since birth, not knowing what we may be returning to. By the grace of God, and I credit answered prayers for protection of each and every room, we returned to no damage of any kind. We are thankful that the row of large pine trees in our back yard remained towering in the sky where sadly, was not the case for so many neighborhood and area properties. Reflecting back on the uncertainty as we all waited nervously for the hurricane to pass and for the time that we were able to return, I am reminded that God is our anchor in any of our life’s storms. He is our stronghold and stability if we use him in that positon. Boating is one of our family’s favorite ways to enjoy the beauty of our area. We spend many sunny Saturdays and occasional days enjoying the solitude, beauty and peace out on the May River or Calibogue Sound. Cruising along and watching dolphins amongst the marsh grasses and oyster beds, is quite serene. However, at times, it is nice to stop the boat right in the waterways to enjoy

28

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

STORM

November 2016

a swim or to hang out at one of the sandbars. In order to do so, you must throw out the anchor from the boat and position it properly, and be sure it takes hold, in order to stop it from drifting. This can be a particularly precise process, and often requires having to continually move the location of the anchor among the moving current and the changing tides. Many have been unpleasantly surprised to find that when they thought they had anchored just right, have come back after a leisurely walk to find the boat is turned in direction or has moved to a different place than where they left it. The anchor keeps the vessel still and stable.

And so it is as when we keep God as the “anchor’ in our lives, he is the stability we need to keep from drifting when things come our way in a society that changes with the wind, or tide, is you will. We all had Hurricane Matthew, a storm of nature, disrupt and turn our lives out of order. In life, we have our personal trials, our challenging times, that disrupt and put our lives off track. An unexpected job loss, an illness, death of a loved one and so on. No matter what; we all will have these “storms” in our life. If we focus on God and His Word, and let it take hold, we can emerge through. Hebrews 6:18-19 tells us “we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil.” During Matthew, we all took refuge to another town, a safer place, a higher ground, to stay safe from the storm. We can’t relocate or physically move away from our personal storms, but we can take refuge daily in the Lord. And if you’ve been caught out on the boat in a pop up afternoon thunderstorm, which happens a lot around the lowcountry on a typical summer day, … you will find that the anchor holds in spite of the storm. Just be sure to wear your waterproof mascara and know its gonna be a bad hair day.

Psalm 139:8-12 NIV If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. The Personal Side of Investing By DANIELLE JEFFCOAT My name is Danielle Jeffcoat. I am originally from the little state of Vermont, where I still have a lot of family. I love to visit, especially in the fall to see the changing of the leaves, apple picking and cider donuts. But the winters are not my friend. I would much rather shovel sand over snow, and I love the sunshine. I graduated from the University of SC with a business management degree and finance concentration. After graduating I knew I would be involved in finance, though I wasn’t sure exactly in what capacity. As I was determining the career path I wanted to take, I spent what was supposed to be the summer of 2006 in Hilton Head … and I’m still here. That is when I met my husband, Trey, through a mutual friend. Trey is very involved in his family’s custom home-building business, Randy Jeffcoat Builders. He is the VP along with his brother, Rhett, and his parents, Randy and Brenda. They have been building custom homes in the Lowcountry for 38 years. I could not be more proud to be a part of that wonderful family. Trey and I got married in 2011, and we have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, Sienna, and a little boy due in January. We are so blessed to have our sweet little family, which keeps us very busy. My daughter attends Cross Schools, which we love, and we attend Lowcountry Community Church. During our free time we enjoy boating on the May River, the beach and swimming in our pool in Hampton Lake — we have fun amenities in our plantation. And, of course, lots of football and fires in our outdoor fireplace during the fall and winter months. The reason I chose to become a Financial Advisor is because I have a passion for helping individuals achieve their goals. I get so much satisfaction from seeing a client be able to retire — or more importantly, that they are able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle they have always dreamed of. I am constantly learning and studying to make sure I am giving the best advise possible. I want my current and future clients to always feel comfortable trusting me with their assets, which is not a role I take lightly. I joined Edward Jones in 2006, opening 34

the firm’s third branch office in Bluffton. A unique feature about Edward Jones is that we are structured as a one Financial Advisor, one Assistant office. This allows us to provide very personalized attention to each client we serve. Clients work with me and Julie O’Donnell, my branch office administrator. We work very well together as a team. I chose Edward Jones as the company I wanted to build my career with for many reasons. One of the most important is that as an investment firm, we tend to have a conservative investment philosophy, which is a great fit for the retirees I work with. In general, we stay away from high-risk investments. Instead, we focus on high-quality investments with proven track records of success, so my retired clients feel reassured they can stay retired. Due to the demographics of the Lowcountry, I work with mostly retired clients but also serve individuals and families planning for retirement.

My clients choose to work with me because I listen to what their needs are and what their concerns are. I take the time needed to make sure they feel comfortable with the strategy we have put in place and stay in touch with them throughout the year to give reassurance that our plan will assist with their retirement goals. I keep it simple, my clients have a good understanding on what they own, how much risk they are taking and how much they are paying for the investments they hold. Investing is already an overwhelming topic for many, so my clients appreciate that I make it easy to understand. There is so much hate in this world, one of my favorite scriptures is 1 Thessalonians 5:11 — Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are doing. Danielle Jeffcoat is a Financial Advisor at Edward Jones Investments. Call her at (843) 815-4054.

Thankful through

TRIALS

W

by LORI AGNEW

WHEN WE LEFT OFF LAST TIME Bill was making some changes in his life which included serving me with divorce papers! I was dumbfounded and devastated. Wait … what happened to our covenant?? What book was he reading from because my bible says that the only acceptable reason for divorce is unfaithfulness. Of that I was not guilty! So where was this coming from? We only had some arguments that were no big deal. I’m over it. Why can’t he be? Let’s just move forward. Bill did … with the divorce. I was shattered. There went my dreams of being a Pastor’s wife. Worst of all, my other weakness manifested itself … abandonment. Anyone who ever said they loved me, left me. Over the years when Bill would come to see Clay (my son that he adopted) we would find ourselves getting back together for a little bit but then break up again because nothing had really changed. Our interaction with each other was still the same so therefore we would get the same outcome. Do you know the definition of insanity?? Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results! There were a couple times when we told the kids but after a while it was like the boy who cried wolf so we just kept it to ourselves. Then came Bill’s 55th birthday. He had been working with the Army in the Chaplain’s Office out in California. Clay and I went out to visit and celebrate with him. Bill and I hooked up again like we usually did when we were together because deep down we still loved each other and it does get lonely. Trying to justify our actions saying “God doesn’t recognize divorce” so in our minds he was still my husband. Wrong! We went out for lunch and I said I was tired of doing this dance back and forth. Let’s just get back together. We know we still love each other. Bill proceeded to make this analogy that I was like an old shirt that you didn’t wear all the time but it was just sooo comfortable that you didn’t want to throw it out!!! I didn’t want to be an old shirt! I wanted my husband to light up when I came in the room. I knew I had so much love to give and I’m a really great catch. I cook, sew, own a successful business, look really good for my age but first and foremost I have a heart for the Lord. He just couldn’t commit to me and I broke it off completely and went about my life. It came time for my 50th birthday. I decided to get myself in really good shape. I was in the best place I had ever been physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I had lost 40 pounds and men really

started paying attention to me. I was introduced to a nice Christian man by my sister. We started seeing each other, doing devotions together each morning and I was feeling very positive about the relationship. It felt good to be in someone’s arms again. To be held and kissed and eventually we fell. That changed the whole dynamic of the relationship. What did I do? I had never even slept with my husband prior to getting married!! This weighed heavily on me and although I repented I couldn’t forgive myself. As Christians we are to court with the intention of marriage. If it’s not going in that direction, then we need to end it or we will miss what God really has for us. He told me he had no intention of marrying again so I broke it off. Bill had come to visit and look at colleges for Clay. It had been two years since California. He told me that he felt he had made a mistake and wished he could do it all over again. He would do it differently and not listen to other people’s opinions. He said God had spoken to his heart and said if he didn’t do something he was going to lose me forever. He said he felt he needed to be with me, to protect me and take care of me so there would be no compromise. Filled with guilt I said, “there’s already been compromise.” He said “with that guy you were seeing?” I was silent. He said “your silence has given me my answer.” And then the most miraculous thing happened. Bill said, “well if I had been the husband to you that I should have been, you would not have been put in that position.” Oh my gosh! He could have flipped out, yelled at me, blamed me, etc. Instead HE took responsibility for MY actions. It was a metaphor of Jesus taking our sin upon Himself. That showed me that not only did he forgive me, but I could forgive myself. It was incredible. The weight of my sin was lifted off of me. I knew that things were different. He was different. We were different. He pulled a little pouch out of his pocket and said “you can do whatever you want with this. Keep it, pawn it, sell it on Ebay.” It was an engagement ring that he had bought a year prior just waiting for the right time to give it to me. The time was now right. We were married 3 weeks later and this December we celebrate 3 years. We are so happy and so thankful for all the trials we’ve been thru. They were really tough at the time to go through but looking back we wouldn’t change a thing because we have learned so much. We can minister to others and give them hope. We give thanks unto the Lord for His mighty restoration power!!!

NEW

BEGINNINGS WE ARE NOW BEGINNING TO RECOVER from the wrath of hurricane Matthew. We are learning to embrace a new normal. Sunshine can now be seen where there was once a canopy of trees. Dirt that is barren is exposed where grass and moss once grew. Our picturesque landscape will take awhile to grow back in, and I hope it grows slow. Because the storm brought high winds and floods and took away some of our beauty, but in doing so it exposed some things even more beautiful. Prayer for strangers traveling in the night. Prayer for strangers hunkered down in their homes while the wind 40

and rain pounded their roof tops. Prayer for everyone to overcome the financial challenges that the storm brought to us all. The storm left behind a bonded group of people ready to offer help and friendship to those in need. The storm left us with a new appreciation for the basic conveniences of water and electricity. We are a group of people with a new life story to tell, as unique as each one of us. Yes, the storm has come and gone and left holes in our roofs and our landscapes but not our hearts. For, as Christians, we know that God can and is using this for good.

Use Essential Oils for Cooking By HEIDI BECK I know many of you are like me and love, love a super yummy meal!! I just can’t help it, I love great food! But who in the world has time to create Pinterest worthy dishes?!? Have you ever tried to cook with a 6 and 4 year old hanging off your legs trying to add their own ingredients? Never mind even going to the grocery store with them in tow — they become little stretch armstrongs and I get home with everything in the store except for what I needed to cook for dinner. Every. Single. Time. I. Cook. Thank heavens for my essential oils! Did you forget basil or cilantro at the store, no problem d TERRA has those oils covered. How about that lime you needed for guacamole and margaritas, d TERRA has awesome lime oil that is so refreshing. You get the picture, d TERRA essential oils aren’t just for managing your health, they are the perfect ingredient to sooo many recipes we make at home. So here are 3 quick tips on using essential oils in your cooking: 1. Cold dishes — add your essential oils any time during the cooking process 2. Hot dishes — add your essential oils towards the end of cooking to ensure the heat does not change the therapeutic qualities 3. A drop or two will do — the flavors are so pure and concentrated that it only takes a drop or two to have a huge impact on the dish Using essential oils when cooking also cuts down on waste. How many times have you gone to the store to buy a bushel of cilantro only to need a quarter cup of chopped leaves and the rest ends up turning into a science experiment in the bottom drawer of your fridge? With the oils you have a full bottle on hand that can last months since you are only using a drop or two at a time. It’s so fun being creative with your oils and I just love the ease of going to my oil box instead of having to make a trip to the store to pick up what I may need for a dish. It’s a win win for this mama!! You can reach Heidi Beck, RN, at (404) 319-4295 or LowcountryWellness@gmail.com.

Our FAMILY Grows Closer by SHANNON KAPRIVE IT WAS JULY 4TH and we were all lined up sitting in our lawn chairs waiting for the fireworks at Skull Creek Marina! Our 3-year-old granddaughter was playing in front of us on the boardwalk, talking to the other neighbors as they joined us to find their seats, when someone stopped to chat, and asked her name. She quickly replied, “Audrey Grace” and with a little twirl, she flung her arms around to where we were sitting and said, “and this is my family!” We were all a little taken back … “Family?” Not sure how she knew — it wasn’t something we ever talked about. She just knew! The love, the caring, the being there for each other. Little did we know that three months later … this beautiful view … with sunsets, sailboats, long piers and boat docks, flowing water, and tall, tall trees would be a site of devastation … and our lives would be forever changed. It all began early the morning of October 4 at our time of intercessory prayer that my friend tearfully prayed for the people of Haiti … for their protection from the approaching storm and confided that she had already begun boarding up the windows at her home on the May River. Only hours later, our Governor began to talk of possible mandatory evacuation … and our life in the Lowcountry began to take on new meaning. Of course, we would evacuate. Where were my hurricane guidelines? What did I need to do? The patio and courtyard furniture was immediately moved into the garage … files and important papers were loaded into our cars; “things” on the first floor … did I move them to second floor? No, what if roof was gone? They would get wet up there … rugs were rolled up. What about my collection of blue and white porcelain? I soon realized that no one thing was more important that another possession … it all had meaning … it was the story of my life … and I left it all. As we climbed in the car to head out, my husband followed me. Rounding the curve, I took a quick turn back … questioning, he watched me … as I turned back to pull into my driveway one more time … just to look at my home that meant so much to me … to pray for His favor and protection, and for all those I loved who had come to mean so much to me in the Lowcountry. 44

Psalm 91:11 — “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all ways.” And the days ahead became some of the most precious days of my life … as they wore on, and the downed trees, approaching waters, and damaged homes became a reality to our beloved Lowcountry. The new meaning of “family” as a term of endearment reached deep into our core as we experienced and felt the “sense of community” that evolved. Restoring power, checking on others; emailing neighbors in a way that had not been done before, taking pictures of homes and calling and sending them to worried homeowners; the constant communications from our community leaders, the giving and sharing of items from local vendors, the served meals, the genuine words of business owners as they vowed “we will be back” … “Family”… what a privilege we experience each day of living life in the Lowcountry! Life is not back to normal yet … but it will be. And we will be stronger, and kinder, and more united and compassionate because of what we have experienced. We have lived through a storm that we hope we never experience again, and our life lessons have been many. We know that the very essence of life is the most important gift of all. That “things” in life are just “things.” We know that out of tragedy, comes new friends, and we live a life with such depth

and renewed gratitude and love in our neighborhoods that is stronger and richer than ever before. We know how incredibility humbling it is to see us reaching out to others, when we ourselves are suffering as well, to be there for one another and to extend our hand in service. Yes, seeing the “Welcome Home” sign complete with hearts of love gave new meaning to Audrey’s words “this is my family!”… for our neighbors are now family in a way that we have not lived and loved before … The returning hugs so real, the home-cooked meal to celebrate our togetherness again so appreciated; the caring and love of our churches and businesses and neighborhoods who each served and loved one another so evident. The experience and fear of Hurricane Matthew so real … but God’s favor and protection and the power of the Holy Spirit within … such a source of comfort that has yielded a deeper relationship as we united as “His family” advancing His kingdom in a deeper way than we had known before. 1 Cor. 2:9 — “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” The healing continues, as we live life in the Lowcountry … another day so blessed by His glorious creation … where His mighty ways continue to be the essence of our very being.

Saying

YES to Tomorrow by CAROL LINNEMAN

“YES! I made it,” she shouted at the top of her lungs. The words kept ringing through Erika’s head as she dressed for work one recent morning, hopping up and down in childlike glee. She alternated between hopping and undisciplined twirling around her room with a huge grin, caught by her mirror, which over the years served as the audience for all her private performances. Shortly, she stopped — What made the difference for me? She began to compare herself to her two best friends, paused as if having a magical thought. Her friends were working for minimum wage cleaning homes, just like her own mom did. Erika sat for a moment. Why do I have such a good job and the chance to go to college? On her drive to work, just promoted to Manager of Operations with an added perk of tuition benefits for evening college courses, Erika began to reflect on her youth. She was raised in a low income family with little education. Struggling to pay the daily expenses, both parents worked hard, thus dictating the need for day care. Erika realized that she was fortunate, however, to have been brought up by two parents, as most of her friends lived with only a mother or grandmother. Erika remembered having asked her mom, “How did you find The Children’s Center?” “From friends, I think. Dad and I somehow knew that it was a good place for kids, so we enrolled you. The tuition was doable for us as it was based on our income, so we were able to manage the payments.” Erika’s parents’ focus was covering their financial needs, necessitating a safe place for Erika’s care, but not willing to settle on mediocrity. They had sensed that TCC was right for their daughter, without really realizing that TCC took advantage of parents’ need for day care to provide a quality early education experience. The Center was very successful. It became a model for other centers, and Erika now recalled the many times she heard her parents commending its programs. Erika knew that she was just eight weeks old when her parents first brought her there. The choice her parents made at that time made all the difference in her life, the exact thoughts that were surfacing on her drive to work this very morning. I real48

ly think that because of their decision to work hard and place me in a good day care, I now have opportunities my friends don’t have. Choice, that was the key, and she wanted to remember that! Her thoughts lingered. I know I was only a baby when I began my life at TCC. Of course, don’t remember any of that time, but Mom said that she never worried about me. The staff took care of all my needs … I guess feeding me, changing my diapers, keeping me safe. I do remember many of my later days, though. It was Ms. Nancy who taught me to read … maybe I was five … and to love books. I will always love books! I know Ms. Nancy still works at the center … I must make a point to visit and thank her. I also remember the wonderful hot breakfasts … French toast, bananas and raisins arranged as a smiley face on my cereal. For lunch, grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade alphabet soup, “piled together” sandwiches … can’t recall everything in them, but the “stacks” began with bread, then ham, some veggie things in between and ended with cheese. We had cut-up fruit and yogurt raisins and crackers in the afternoons. Guess they knew everything kids liked. Erika was so engrossed in her memories that she almost missed her next turn! Gosh, I remember the name game … the puzzle maps … learning Nursery Rhymes and acting them out … maybe that is why I am now such a clown at times—I loved being funny in front of my class … is that confidence or what? Maybe I’m just a show-off! The music and songs … The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout, down came the rain and washed the spider out! Erika sang her way for a few miles, singing so enthusiastically, complete with all the head motions she had mastered over the years entertaining herself and her friends, that a driver in a passing car slowed down just to watch her. Then she paused, and seriously thought about how much she really did learn at The Center. After all, it was my day-time home for six years from six in the morning until Dad or Mom picked me up after work. They said that they were usually there by five-thirty. So, I had a lot of hours to study and play with

other kids, who were really my brothers and sisters … I didn’t have a real brother or sister at home. I learned about responsibility — recycling, classroom jobs … like watering the plants, arranging the chairs, sweeping the floors. We also practiced self-discipline … our teachers reminded us to use “inside voices,” to put away the items we used and modeled the way to show kindness to each other. Volunteers often came into our classrooms — they expanded our horizons for sure — it was fun socializing with different grown-ups and to have them play, read and work with us. Oh yes, almost forgot, sometimes we performed for senior citizens … and sometimes for our parents. I clearly remember our great classrooms — all arranged in learning centers … instrument center, housekeeping center … Mom just told me this past weekend that TCC now serves more than two hundred kids. Wow! Erika continued her dialogue with herself. So, I guess it’s easy to answer my own question: What made the difference for me? It was my parents’ choice of The Children’s Center. They said yes to tomorrow, my future, which I am living in today. This “today” has been possible because of my great start. I was well prepared for grade school and high school, which showed in my impressive grades. Thus, I was able to secure a significant job at the Shipping Complex … now a fantastic promotion after only two years … and … a boss encouraging me to attend college. I will always remember that the foundation for education is laid in pre-school … that it will be important for me to make good decisions for my own children someday … decisions that will give them a great start in life just like I had. The mission of The Children’s Center is to make high quality early education and childcare services available and affordable for working families in order to help our children have a great start in life. To volunteer: The Children’s Center at Jarvis Creek Park 8 Nature’s Way, Hilton Head, SC 29926 (843) 681-2739

Helping

FAMILIES by LYNDA HALPERN THERE ARE MORE THAN 550 HOMELESS CHILDREN IN BEAUFORT COUNTY; Family Promise believes that one homeless child is too many. Our vision is that “Every child will have a home.” Family Promise of Beaufort County, Inc is a shelter for homeless families with children and we provide an intensive case management program designed to help homeless families in our community obtain permanent housing and achieve lasting independence. Our mission is to provide temporary shelter, family stability and permanent housing solutions for homeless families with children by mobilizing resources from interfaith and secular communities. We accomplish our mission through a cost efficient, effective and replicable model that utilizes existing community resources, volunteers and a program designed to address the underlying causes of homelessness. The concept of Family Promise began in 1986 in response to the growing need to provide shelter, meals and comprehensive support to families without homes. This model has been so effective it has expanded to 202 affiliates in 42 states. Family Promise of Beaufort County incorporated as a local, independent affiliate in 2006 and opened the doors in July 2008. Family Promise serves low-income families who for one reason or another find themselves in a homeless situation. These are families who are experiencing “situational homelessness” and are living paycheck to paycheck and may have encountered an illness, loss of job, death in the family, house fire, etc. and are not able to bounce back financially. We provide these families with a comprehensive range of essential services necessary to secure and maintain permanent housing: temporary shelter, meals, daily necessities, case management, coordination of and assistance in obtaining available community services, life skills

training, transportation, housing search assistance, financial assistance for childcare, furniture/household goods for their new home and moving services. While they are not an emergency shelter, families with children who are currently homeless or are in fear of becoming homeless should contact them at (843) 815-4211 and a Case Manager will be happy to speak with them. The Day Center, located in Old Town Bluffton, is the hub of operations for Family Promise’s shelter program and a home base for our families. The Day Center provides a safe place to be during the day; showers; laundry facilities; computers for school work, housing/ job searches; an address for guests to put on important applications; a place where pre-school children can be during the day; and a confidential space where parents receive case management services. Family Promise staff provide comprehensive case management to inculde assistance in securing employment, childcare, school placement, life skills classes and a variety of other essential services needed to overcome the barriers to permanent housing. Family Promise utilizes a network of 35 host and support congregations with whom the families spend each evening, having dinner and participating in activities with volunteers. After dinner, each family retires to a private room in the congregation building. In the morning, breakfast is provided, bag lunches are packed and the Family Promise van takes school-aged children to school and the parents to work or the Day Center. When Hilton Head Rotary members Larry Sanders and Club President and President of the Tabby Walk Villas Homeowners Association, Don Brashears contacted Family Promise for assistance in helping the 30-40 families at Tabby Walk who were going to be displaced due to the extreme damage their homes suffered as a result of “Matthew,” we were happy to help. All it

took was one email to all of our partnering congregations located in Bluffton and on Hilton Head and in no time the calls came in to offer their buildings and volunteers in an effort to take care of their neighbors. It’s what our over 700 volunteers do! They help those who are going through tough and challenging times. They rally their troops and turn office space or classrooms into warm and safe sleeping quarters for families, they prepare hot and nutritious meals, and provide companionship and support. Helping others is second nature to all of them and we couldn’t do what we do without them. While the renovations continue at Tabby Walk a huge thank you to our friends on Hilton Head - First Presbyterian Church, St Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Christ Lutheran Church and in Bluffton/Okatie - Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Church of the Palms United Methodist Church, Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church to name a few.

WHAT DO WE NEED • DONATIONS – diapers (especially size 6), paper products, fragrance free laundry detergent and dryer sheets, tall kitchen and 30 gallon trash bags, cleaning supplies • MONETARY DONATIONS are always appreciated and can be sent to 181 Bluffton Road, D101, Bluffton, SC 29910 or call (843) 815-4211. • VOLUNTEERS – to work at our front desk, prepare meals for our families, spend time with our families on the weekends. We are always looking for volunteers and we promise they will get more than they give. It is a very rewarding experience. November 2016

Through the

STORM

AFTER THE STORM, WE WERE LEFT WITH many things that were piled up. Yes, some of it was debris, but some of it was bills. For many, this unplanned vacation couldn’t have come at a worse time. But as children of God we are resilient. We know that God has a plan in everything.

Yes, I am weak and I need to be reminded how to behave. I am happy that things were not worse. I should rejoice. I should count it as a blessing.

Jeremiah 29:11 — For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I know I will get there in time. At this writing, I am asking for guidance in all things for all of us. I will be obedient — it just might take a minute or two to be submissive, but I ultimately want to be faithful, and will be faithful. So as we join together as a community that has experienced the storm of 2016 in so many unique ways, let us pray for each other. For the healing of hearts and souls. Let us pray for growth and blessings.

I keep reading this scripture over and over and I know that everything is going to be just fine, and then I open my eyes to see such distress. Yes, I am a weak human. I need His strength to get through this valley. I depend on His guidance every day. I know He’s got this and me and us all. I try to focus on my path, but I can’t help but see others who survived this storm unscathed. I am reminded of the mind-your-business scripture: John 21:21-22 — When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 50

Ephesians 5:20 — Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 107:28-31 — Yet when they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, the Lord brought them out of their distress. He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down.
