Babysitter Training (11yrs+)

The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. Babysitting promises to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. This updated curriculum, complete with new science, also provides improved learning when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency. Youth Programs Youth Training Program

Youth ages 13-15 are welcome to use the Fitness Centre upon completion of the Youth Training Program. A Youth Pass must be presented prior to admission, a PAR-Q completed, and a code of conduct and waiver signed by parent/guardian. Call to book a Youth Training Program. $10/session

Youth Zone Fitness Blender (13-18yrs)

Youth Zone Fitness Blender is a series of fitness and wellness classes specifically for teens. Classes may include spin, bootcamp, TRX, yoga, strength training, fundamental movement skills and nutrition. All classes are taught by BCRPA fitness instructors. Youth Zone

There are a variety of exciting recreational and social activities for preteens ages 10-12yrs and teens ages 13-18yrs at our Youth Zone. Youth have access to gym activities, sports equipment, pool tables, foosball tables, pingpong tables, card and board games, as well as a gaming system, TV and DVD players for special nights. Youth are welcome to attend and no registration is required. Youth Zone is a safe place for youth to hang out and we frequently have special events including- theme nights, games tournaments, and more! Active Knee Program (8-20yrs)

The Active Knee Program is back by popular demand. The majority of ACL injuries are NON contact injuries and occur in 1520 year olds while playing soccer, football, rugby, volleyball and basketball. Furthermore, females are at a 4- 6 times greater risk of injuring their ACL! An injury prevention program that includes a movement screening, education and specific training has been shown to decrease the rate of injuries by up to 88%. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn the basic movement training that will ensure your child has healthy knees for years to come! If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to knit, now’s your chance. This is a short course for beginners and we’ll be starting with the basics and working at your speed, so you will never be left behind. You will learn how to cast on, knit and purl stitches, what to do if you drop a stitch (don’t panic) and how to cast off. Felting with Elise.... Felting with Elise is a great way to learn a new craft, or develop your current technique. Wet Felted Bag

Wet Felted Soap

You’ve seen them at the farmers’ market and not only are they fun to make, but practical too! Wool covered soap is antibacterial, exfoliating, makes your soap last longer AND it’s pretty! We will be using hot water to bind wool around the soap. Ivory soap is used for the class, but you are welcome to bring one from home if you have a preference. Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and complete the program once all criteria have been achieved.

Red Cross Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deepwater activities and proper use of a lifejacket/Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Red Cross Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Red Cross Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Red Cross Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary back stroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Red Cross Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Red Cross Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Red Cross Level 9

This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and selfrescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Red Cross Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and headfirst and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

The main pool is a four-lane, 25-metre pool heated at 28°C (82-83°F) Features: • diving board • basketball hoops • rope swing • aquatic lift •removable stairs • slides • climbing wall • water run-way The therapy pool is accessible by ramp; heated at 34°C (94°F) and has a shallow end depth of zero sloping to four feet (aquatic wheelchairs are available for moving from change Effective Sep 4- Dec 23 rooms into therapy pool.) Whirlpool is a combination of turbulent air & 40°C (104°F) water (see pg 1 for schedule changes/closures) pumped into the pool. The Sauna is a hot, dry, relaxing area kept at an average of 55°C (131°F). **Children under 7 years must be accompanied in water and within arm’s reach of parent or person 19 years plus. Cardio Circuit A ‘do-it-all’ HIGH INTENSITY circuit style class that will get your heart pumping and muscles strong! Challenge your body’s ability using a variety of equipment and compound muscle movements. This is a high intensity class, if you have mobility issues or injuries you should see your doctor or speak with the instructor prior to participation. Retro Cardio Core Step back in time and groove to a traditional style of choreography. Spend 45min getting the heart pumping while learning a routine to upbeat music. You will spend the last 15min of class challenging your core strength and relaxing your body.

Saturday Spin ** This 45min non-registered class teaches you the basics of indoor cycling. Get lost in the music as you power through hills, sprints and intervals – you get to decide the resistance and pace you ride. **PLEASE NOTE: this class is not included in monthly or punch passes. $6 drop-in Fitness Lite 1 Gentle and easy on the joints! Class includes a warm-up, easy to follow choreography cardio, safe, joint friendly strength, balance, and core exercises and concludes with a gentle stretch for all the muscles worked. Ideal for those who want a low intensity workout or who are new to exercise. Fitness Lite 2 Low to moderate impact and fun! 30-20-10 – 30min to get your groove on with choreographed cardio – 20min to focus on form with safe strength, balance and core exercises – 10min to relax and stretch out your muscles! This class is ideal for those who want a solid workout without high impact and intensity. Also suitable for first time exercisers without any severe joint issues; active agers and prenatal moms. Yoga - Fitness Yoga is a wonderful way to stretch and relax the body. This class blends Hatha yoga poses in a Vinyasa Flow style. Tennis-like game played on a badminton court using a perforated, slow moving ball and a smooth paddle. Please pay drop-in admission prior to entering gym, participants must be present at time of admission purchase, space is limited, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, schedule subject to change without notice. Are you new to fitness or new to our facility? Our basic orientation is the perfect program to get you started and comfortable in this new environment. Option 2: Personalized Workout Session

Are you someone who needs extra motivation and accountability? Not interested in group exercise classes or the structure that comes with a detailed training plan? The intensity levels are used as a guideline. Each individual may choose to work at their own pace. Warm up is an important component of your workout PLEASE SHOW UP ON TIME FOR YOUR CLASSES. Get your Friday night started with reps ‘n’ roll while we rock to some jammin’ good tunes. This class is a blend of strength training and self-myofascial release (SMR). When we train our muscles for strength and power we tend to generate muscle tension, tightness and soreness. Over time, our fascia gets tight, decreasing range of motion, causing fatigue, pain, poor movement patterns, and higher risk of injury. Gentle - beginner level, very low impact, low cardio intensity, rehabilitative fitness, some classes may require medical clearance. Perhaps the use of a mobility aid, health issues to consider. Low - beginner level, new to fitness, low impact, mild cardio intensity, gentle strength training for joints. Great for those returning to fitness post injury or surgery. Great for prenatal moms and active agers. Moderate - intermediate fitness level, possibility of jumping and turning with more dynamic movement. Good body mechanics. Good cardio base. Variety of equipment used. Some compound muscle movements may be introduced. Some modifications may be given to those who need them. High - Advanced fitness levels. Working out of your comfort zone to approximately 90% of maximum heart rate. Full range of motion around joints is ideal. Injury free. Variety of equipment used. Lots of compound muscle movements. Coordination and agility are also used in this type of class.

Run/Walk Clinics Urban Poling Walking Program

Urban Poling is fitness for all ages and stages. Urban Walking Poles can help improve posture and balance, while taking stress from the hips and knees. As well, you could burn 20-45% more calories than regular walking with Urban Walking Poles! Whether you are looking for motivation to get off the couch, a way to optimize your current walking routine or for an effective cross-training alternative - Urban Poling may be for you! We provide the poles, you bring your friends. Sessions will begin slow and gradually increase in speed and distance. Don’t worry, no one gets left behind! Trail Running Clinic - NEW!

This is a fun and social clinic aimed at newer runners looking to get into trail running, and/or those interested in learning about and exploring more of Ladysmith’s growing trail network. As you spend time in nature you can look forward to learning trail running technique, wilderness safety, gear, and some tips to avoid injury. Registration & Admission Information Fitness Centre and Aquatic Passes

Cancellations

10x and 30x Passes - Punch passes are non-transferable and do not expire. Monthly Passes - Monthly passes are non-transferable and non-refundable. No ‘holds’ permitted for 1 month passes. 12 month passes can be placed on ‘hold’ for a minimum of two weeks two times per pass. A scheduled monthly payment plan is available for 12 month passes. Ask reception for more details. ALL PASSES CAN BE USED IN BOTH THE POOL AND FITNESS CENTRE, AS WELL AS ANY DROP-IN FITNESS CLASSES

Registration

Full payment is required at time of registration. Payment is accepted by cheque, credit card, debit card, or cash. All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early to avoid cancellation or disappointment.

Programs are subject to cancellation due to insufficient registration. If this occurs, a full refund will be issued. In the event that a program or an individual class is cancelled, every attempt will be made to have the class or program rescheduled.

Refunds

Refunds may be given for withdrawals 5 days prior to the start of the program, subject to a $5 refund processing fee. No withdrawals or refunds 4 days or less before course start date. In cases of extended illness or injury, a prorated refund or credit may be granted upon provision of a medical note. Classes missed due to sickness, vacation, or other reasons will not be refunded or credited.

Leisure Access Program

Parks, Recreation & Culture is committed to providing accessible and affordable recreation programs. Families living within Town boundaries with a combined family income at or below the Statistics Canada Low Income Threshold are eligible to apply for the Leisure Access Program.
