Times have changed and we have had to make changes as well including the format of our guide. To keep our programs and schedules up to date with guidelines set out by the Provincial Health Officer, Island Health and Work Safe BC, the Activity Guide will be available online on a monthly basis. @ Transfer Beach & the FJCC! PLAY, CREATE and EXPLORE with ADVENTURE ZONE DAYCAMP this summer! This year our daycamp will be hosted in TWO different locations, allowing for smaller groups but twice the fun! Each week boasts a new theme, full of crafts, sports, games, STEM activities, and new friendships. Our passionate, experienced summer leaders create a FUN, SAFE, and INCLUSIVE environment, fostering positive relationships and self-worth, all while having a blast! Camps are held primarily outdoors at both Transfer Beach AND the Frank Jameson Community Centre. Physical distancing measures will be in place according to the Provincial Health Officer. This week pack your imaginary suitcase and come along for a journey you won’t forget. Come learn and experience all the amazing cultures that make up our fantastic world. Fitness Class Intensity Levels

The intensity levels are used as a guideline. Each individual may choose to work at their own pace. Warm up is an important component of your workout - PLEASE SHOW UP ON TIME FOR CLASS.

R

Restorative - restorative fitness, no impact. May require medical clearance. Perhaps the use of a mobility aid, health issues to consider.

G

Gentle - beginner level, very low impact, low cardio intensity, rehabilitative fitness, some classes may require medical clearance. Perhaps the use of a mobility aid, health issues to consider.

L

Low - beginner level, new to fitness, low impact, mild cardio intensity, gentle strength training for joints. Great for those returning to fitness post injury or surgery. Great for prenatal moms and active agers.

M

Moderate - intermediate fitness level, possibility of jumping and turning with more dynamic movement. Good body mechanics. Good cardio base. Some compound muscle movements may be introduced. Some modifications may be given to those who need them.

H

High - Advanced fitness levels. Working out of your comfort zone to approximately 90% of maximum heart rate. Full range of motion around joints is ideal. Injury free. Lots of compound muscle movements. Coordination and agility are also used in this type of class.

Youth Zone Fitness Blender (13-18yrs)

Youth Zone Fitness Blender is a series of fitness and wellness classes specifically for teens. Classes may include bootcamp, yoga, strength training, and fundamental movement skills. All classes are taught by BCRPA Fitness Instructors. Community Centre Gymnasium Monday July 6-27 $25/4 sessions

Strength & Stability

Skip the cardio and join us for an hour of power in this total body strength and stability conditioning class. Your body weight will be utilized along with a variety of equipment to sculpt, tone and develop muscles. This class will have an emphasis on safe and proper form. Circuit, Cycle, and Core... and in no particular order! This class is sure to challenge you beyond your fitness boundaries! Class is great for healthy beginners looking for the right kick-start or for fitness fanatics looking to add variety into your workouts. Low to moderate impact and fun! 30-20-10 - 30 minutes to get your groove on with choreographed cardio - 20 minutes to focus on form with safe strength, balance and core exercises - 10 minutes to relax and stretch out your muscles! Try a blend of some of the most effective spin fusion workouts! A different class every week offered with a variety of exercises in a fun and safe group setting. Being more active is good for your health! Join a community of older adults for a total-body workout appropriate for active agers. Get Active classes are designed to increase flexibility, joint stability, balance, coordination, agility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance all while having friendly fun and being social. Osteofit Level 1 & 2

Osteofit is a specifically designed program to help you reach your fitness goals while respecting your limitations and expanding your possibilities. Exercise maintains bone health and improves muscle strength, balance, and joint range of motion to reduce the risk of falls and fractures. Osteofit 1 contains an educational component that includes nutrition, falls prevention, active living with osteoporosis, and healthy lifestyle choices. A ‘do-it-all’ High Intensity circuit style class that will get your heart pumping and muscles strong! Challenge your body’s ability using a variety of equipment and compound muscle movements. This is a high intensity class, if you have mobility issues or injuries you should see your doctor or speak with the instructor prior to participation. Frequently Asked Questions: What equipment do I need for class? These classes will be designed with limited equipment. Our instructors can get very creative! Please bring your own waterbottle, no water fountains will be available. What new protocols are in place to ensure my safety? All of our programs will involve a greeting, pre-screening and hand sanitation each and every time we meet. Each participant will be supplied with their own disinfecting agent and paper towels to clean equipment after use. Frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned on a regular basis by staff. Will I have my own “space” to participate in? You will be assigned a “space” to participate in during your class, as well as your own assigned equipment.

HIIT the Outdoors

High-Intensity Interval Training, aka HIIT is one of the best ways to maximize your workout time and burn lots of calories during and even after your workout. HIIT alternates between intense bursts of effort and lessintense or rest. You don’t have to be a super athlete to participate you just have to be prepared to work outside your comfort zone for short periods. Forrest Field Wednesday July 8-29 $25/4 sessions

Pedal in the Parking Lot

Challenge yourself to this 45 minute OUTDOOR cycling class. It’s a great way to get in a vigorous workout, while burning calories. Go through the hills, sprints & intervals while listening to motivating and upbeat music. Participants modify their own cycling resistance and pace. Youth Sport Conditioning (10-15yrs)

For youth who are focused on performance and excelling at sport, conditioning is ideal. In fact conditioning has proven beneficial for young athletes to help develop strength, balance, coordination, speed, power, flexibility and agility. Continuing with athletic conditioning has also helped athletes become more resilient to injury or bounce back sooner. Conditioning programs should be instructed by a knowledgeable and qualified trainer that will take into account their rapidly changing bodies and consider how to develop their specific skills for their sport. General Interest Red Cross Stay Safe! (9-13yrs)

Real-world scenarios often call on children to respond to challenges. The Stay Safe! program teaches applicable and age-appropriate skills, while increasing and reinforcing a youth’s capacity to improve his or her own safety. Whether in their community or on their own, this group will be given better tools to Stay Safe! in a variety of different situations. Prerequisite: Minimum 9 years of age or completion of grade 3. Each appointment is for 1 hour at a cost of $4.25. Controlling the amount of people in the Fitness Centre allows us to enforce physical distancing and ensure equipment and touch points are disinfected. Frequently Asked Questions: I have a pass on hold. Can I reactivate it to use for these appointments? Not at this time. All passes have been suspended until we are fully operational. Can I book more than one appointment at a time? There are only a limited number of sessions per day please be respectful and limit your bookings to one a day. What if I become ill after I book my appointment, will I receive a refund? Yes you will receive a full refund in this instance and we thank you for being socially responsible.

Is there a time limit on equipment? Our 30 minute maximum on cardio equipment remains in effect. We also ask that you do not spend more than 5 minutes on a strength machine and supersetting between equipment is not permitted. Are the Personal Trainers available for one-on-one service? Sorry, not at this time, we are evaluating options for the reintegration of this service for a future phase. In the meantime, there will be a personal trainer on site at all times to answer any questions - at a socially responsible distance of course!

Registration Information Online Registration: Visit www.reccowichan.ca to register for any courses offered through Ladysmith Parks, Recreation and Culture or click on the red course codes contained in the online guide. Telephone: Call 250.245.6424 during office hours and use your Visa or Mastercard.

Things are changing day to day, minute by minute. If you decide to register for a program and details of the program change, a member of the Ladysmith Parks, Recreation and Culture team will be in touch. If you need to withdraw from a class, refunds may be given for withdrawals 5 days prior to the start of a program, subject to a $5 refund processing fee. No withdrawals or refunds 4 days or less before course start date.

What if something changes?

We are doing our very best to plan in advance for a return to our ‘regular’ class schedule. However, the health and safety of you, our community and our staff is an absolute priority. We will continue to follow the Provincial Health Officer’s and WorkSafeBC directives on COVID-19 protocols.
