FOREWORD
N
owadays, people are more enticed to read materials with captivating visuals, while publications utilize this to capture engagements rather than the content itself. The majority are much more focused on these that many seem to overlook a magazine’s main objective—to entertain, educate, and inform the audience; and it’s about time that readers are reminded of such. We, at La Estrella Verde (LEV), always consider the quality of our craft, dedicated in serving the DLSU-D High School students with credible information that is both substantial and enjoyable. With the pandemic still stretching as far as the present, we do not perceive this predicament as a setback but an opportunity for our student publication to adapt and still exhibit its responsibilities for the community. No matter the circumstance, LEV is proud to be able to keep pursuing what they have always stood for—being the Upholders of Truth and Heralds of Change. With that said, it is with utmost pleasure that we finally introduce the third issue of Eunoia. For this year’s edition, we invite you to explore into the depths of the four suits within this work. While it may not seem as much to the naked eye, each concept bears the representation of those voicing out and those who still wish to be heard. The bliss of the past, the evolution of perception, one’s virtue, and one’s state of mind; each tale signifies each individual’s take on life’s value. Love. Knowledge. Worth. Judgement. Let this be the part of your own story.

EDITOR’S NOTE

ere before your eyes are the stories we have heard for you to be felt. Behold, you might find yourself within these pages. We present to you the third issue of Eunoia, where the emblems of life embody each and every one of us. The four suits hold countless connotations from the ancient age until the very now and we are here to make a coalition out of its nuance. Seek through the curves and corners of each suit—the love in the childhood of hearts, the knowledge in the youth of clubs, the worth in the maturity of diamonds, and the judgement in the old age of spades. A prodigy beyond words, this magazine wishes to imprint the best discernment on the essence of living. As how we are fond to look out for others, breathe, and you’ll recognize how your life holds the most value in your own history. Let your existence feel any of its miles, whatever phase you are in as you read through these pieces. And by then, the greater you can be for anyone else. After all, it is what Eunoia is, for it holds the will of nurturing a beautiful thinking. After you turn the page, nothing would be in your vision if not for the people who went past their limits for this issue to happen. A heartfelt appreciation to the students who shared their stories and became the faces within its pages, to the editors refining its faults and flaws, and the artists portraying its chronicles and narratives. And to my people, who braved enough on molding the heart of the magazine and let their words fly higher than doubts and insecurities—my beloved writers. To take on the lead for Eunoia is a once in a lifetime chance, and it is a huge pleasure to have it with them. Flip and devour every page and you’ll fathom everything within. As you reach the end, whisper and let yourself hear what suit you are in.

A tale of toil and triumph Words by Elaine Samantha Olona Photos by John Garrick Kyle Dominguez, Directed by Ollie Alexandra Lanzar
A prophecy is given the moment the hero sets foot on their own tale. From the moment they’re introduced up until the instant they triumph, every step along the way has already been set in stone. Expectations must be met at each turn. Failure to do so is like a curse branded upon the skin as a mark of an outcast. HOWEVER, JOHN GARRICK Kyle Dominguez (HMS13) didn’t view his subversion to expectations as a curse; rather, he bore it as a proud symbol of his identity. His sexuality is something that defied his prophecy from the beginning, marking a different kind of journey for this young hero to take on by storm.
Once upon a time
A doll is clutched in one hand while a toy car can be found in the other. This quickly became outlets for three-year-old John’s feminine and masculine sides to make themselves known early on in his journey. Nothing compares to a child’s innocent joy when handed toys or trinkets and the protagonist of our story wasn’t
any different. He didn’t think much of it as a young child but looking back at it in hindsight, he supposes the toys coupled with the fact that growing up around the company of his female cousins served as a great influence for who he is today. Little by little, he went up against his prophecy without even knowing it. John’s realization of his sexuality came later on in his life, at the age of seven, when he first felt attraction towards the same gender. Through the haze of confusion of liking someone of the same gender, he quickly reassured himself, “There’s nothing wrong with that, I guess. Love is free.” His discovery of his sexual orientation only progressed when he garnered a certain liking for the famous Korean drama
entitled “Boys Over Flowers”. It fueled his newfound attraction to the same sex and served as an aid in further understanding of his sexuality. John’s journey has barely begun, but he takes one step at a time as he sets off on a quest for an identity he has yet to explore to the fullest.
Hero’s helpers
Weapons, sustenance, and support are all necessities that a hero must possess in order to venture out for a quest. Luckily for John, he found himself with an abundance of these essentials along with the encouragement of his family and friends, making him feel ready to take on whatever’s ahead of him.

HEARTS
John’s journey is something to be done in solitude yet that doesn’t mean he couldn’t seek wisdom from those willing to guide him. In his seventh grade, John met his chosen family who helped him learn more about his sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community itself. Accompanied by people who have been struggling with their own journeys with sexuality and those who are open about their sexuality. “Knowing that someone is there for me, I never felt alone because I felt stronger and motivated,” he shared. Because of the support he received from his peers, he grew to love himself and not be ashamed. “[S]uper saya ko kasi sobrang comfortable [ng friends ko] sa’kin and then sobrang comfortable rin ako sa kanila.” From there, John continued his journey with a heart filled with love and contentment, his steps not weighed down with judgment and shame. Armed with the knowledge that there are people rooting for his success, he was ready to set out to the next thing life had to offer.
With the walls closing in Every hero takes a different path in their own stories. Some climb through steep mountains, rickety bridges, or scorching deserts while others get the privilege to walk through a wide and unmarred road. For John, his quest for his identity was a maze that he didn’t know how to navigate. Without a map to tell him where to go and what to look out for, fear and uncertainty hang thick in the air. A journey isn’t complete without a challenge arising and the same thing applies to John and his own path to self-discovery. He expressed, “There’s always a time for discrimination in this unaccepting society.” In John’s eighth grade, he recounted his tale of being teased whenever a group of upper-level men encountered him in the hallways of the school by catcalling him and his friends. Words are sharp like the cutting edge of a sword, leaving a faint scar in its wake. From snide remarks between class to the media’s bigotry toward the LGBTQ+ community, he wasn’t able to seek refuge between the walls that felt like they were steadily closing in. John revealed. The darkness grew thicker the further he ventured into the maze, causing him to retreat even for a few moments for fear of being attacked. With just a quick haze of drunken men teasing him one night, he became someone he wasn’t. “I felt so scared, and I felt like (I) was being discriminated (against), so I acted more masculine.” But fear wasn’t his only emotion at the time since he also felt a surge of disappointment toward those men. He even shed some hope that they’d become better guided in the future so that the experience never happens to anyone again.
HEARTS
“Knowing that
someone is there for me, I never felt alone because I felt stronger and motivated.
Even though he’d experienced discrimination in school, the media, and the community, he became strong enough to wield the sword that made a scar as he held it in a tight grip to ward off those who pose a threat. He protected himself and used the fear, disappointment, and anger he felt to make him stronger than he was before. And if ever na masira, hahanapin ko ‘yung way para mahalin ‘yung sarili ko uli,” he said. Out of the darkness Leaving the taunts and jeers behind him, John went through the maze with a sense of confusion and uncertainty but never with a twinge of fear. The labyrinth took him wherever it sees fit and John is content to just follow its lead. He knew he’d find his way out eventually; with the world beneath his feet and a steady heart drumming to its own rhythm, ready to come out and face the world as his true self. John’s prime driving force for coming out started not just with his dream of being a flight attendant and fashion designer but with his vision for a better society. He addressed, “[G]usto kong maging
As far as conventionality goes, he confessed that his coming out process was done with little fanfare. It was less of an admittance of his sexuality and more of a clear and collective realization. With kind words and gentle reassurances there to back him up, he never felt the need to even question his identity or felt like he was doing anything wrong. Even though he has his own journey to go through and a different path to follow, John confessed that his biggest struggle as someone who’s already out is seeing people live in fear of being themselves. “Ayokong may nakikitang naiiwan o nagtatago,” he conveyed. He spends his time trying to help people take one step at a time towards their own path to self-acceptance. With that said, he carves a mark for those who have yet to embark on their journey to see. “Don’t ever stop loving yourself,” he advised. Ultimately, John became
the living witness that loving yourself is worth more than a thousand happily ever afters.
***
A spot of light can be seen at the end of the maze and John knows that he’s pages away from his next chapter. He knows his journey isn’t truly over but he’s glad to be back where he belongs, proud to be fully himself. He was never cursed, he was just himself, and that will always amount to more than what any set prophecy had in mind for him. Society calls it a curse, a malediction, or an imprecation but when you strip centuries of bigotry away, it’s just love. No story is entirely the same; there isn’t a formula for living the perfect fairytale life because life isn’t a simple straight road with the same trials to beat time and time again. Sometimes, you just have to set out on a journey and figure out just what life holds. *Editor’s Note: We thank John Garrick Kyle Dominguez for his valuable participation.

Tulad na lamang ni Ariana Lorraine Reyes (HMS21), “I’ve always found myself collecting even the smallest things.”
Isa na rito si Andrea Managuelod (STM23) na ibinahaging, “I can always see the value of things and those people na for keeps talaga.”
I (can) remember the person that I used to be, and those people who became part of every chapter (of) my life.”
***
Para kay Reyes, “I want to be able to look at pieces of memories from my childhood and tell myself, ‘Ah, I lived a good life’.”

Welcome back to (old) school! Words by Mary Abigail Manalo and Stephanie Nicole Rabacal Photos by Ollie Alexandra Lanzar
Maybe Beyoncé was right, what goes around really comes back around. With no doubt, old trends aren’t really old anymore, and they popped back on today’s trending list once again. Vintage items, classic fashion pieces, and retro style gaming were deemed iconic during the past decades that it has to make its comeback in this generation. While some people revert to these old trends in the hopes of reviving the sense of nostalgia, others have seen it as an aesthetic, and no one’s complaining!
antique! We only do vinyl records here
One of the most prominent things retrieved from the past are vinyl records, and many are gushing on collecting these. Unlike tuning in to songs through music streaming platforms like Spotify, these discs allow people to listen in a more exciting way with its dynamic duo, the turntables. The different vibe it surrounds can make one dance along to its every turn, and it’s really hard to stop. Because of its distinct appeal to others, especially to the music lovers, some artists have started releasing their music through vinyl records. However, as much as how tempting it is to avail these, it costs thick bucks. So you might want to get a piggy bank and start saving for your own vinyl collection.
What filter? It’s all raw
Instant photos from Polaroid and Instax have already been a hit for quite some time, but Instagram has slightly changed after other types of analogue photography emerged from its antique shelves. The candid strokes of light and detailed grain effect makes a photo more sensible and sentimental. Authentic film cameras are also hard to find, as to why disposable cameras happened—saving those who can’t find the vintage piece they’re eyeing. Holding a film camera is far from similar when holding a digital one; not just you don’t have a screen to look at for a clearer view, but you also won’t get to see the outputs unless you have it developed. It is known to fit better on spontaneous moments, not until you take it with a bad lighting and distance. And yes, it is a nerve-wracking adventure.
HEARTS
iconic No, this ain’t your old mom jeans
Skinny jeans were a thing in the past decade but got kept hidden in the wardrobe after people started wearing flared pants over again. Its unique flare cut can pursue a flattering look on one’s body, and its fit from top to bottom also creates the illusion of lengthening the legs. Adding this piece to your closet won’t make you regret it. This kind of jeans is surely easy to pair with any top given its versatile aura and style. After you give this a chance to be on your outfit of the day, you’ll get to experience how to be a fashionista in an instant!
We go out the salon, dashing
Until now, there are some people who prefer bouncy curls over shiny straight hair. Past decades flashed the spotlight on different appearances which featured curly hair, especially back in the 80s when backcombed tresses were famous. However, as more people share their perfectly tailored perm hairstyles on social media, it seems as if the world has shifted to modern takes of this chic look. From loose waves to tight coils, there are many variations to this iconic style that you might want to try out. Perms are timeless and perfect for any event, whether it’s a glamorous party or a simple day out to the beach. And the fact that it is doable at home is just one of its many bonuses!
***
classic! Sun’s out, and so are these sunnies
As the world continues to fall in love with vintage items, it appears that classic sunglasses are no exemption. Thin frames with simple designs, tinted lenses, solid colors—these ageless sunnies seem to be resurfacing in recent years. Not only do these glasses look elegant, but they are able to function well as shades from the harsh rays of the sun. These sunglasses are also easy to match with different outfits and could even be an accessory that shows personality. Look fancy or chill—make a statement by topping up your outfit of the day with a simple pair of retro sunnies.
Whether it’s from music, photography, or fashion, old trends find ways to regain its fame and the public’s affection. All that’s important now is that you enjoy and savour the presence of these things, new or old, because who knows? One day, they might be gone along with the wind again. Hop on and let these trends speak for your personality and go out the streets popping with a pinch of the past. *Editor’s Note: We thank Kae Gonzales for her valuable participation.

In the peril's vulnerability Words by Stephanie Nicole Rabacal Photos by Stacey Benitez, Jan Andrei Olayon, and Reichelle Macasaet, Directed by Ollie Alexandra Lanzar
The challenge sets its start, and the mission is to build a house of cards. For every piece to stand, no hands should tremble to make it lean on another. For every level to layer, no mind should make one’s focus get devoured. Amidst the crowd of scintillating eyes that squint, the very little tremors brought by jostles, and the humming hush of wind, would one still dare to take over and make their own paper tower?

ENTERING THE WORLD of business is not something one would do in an instant spare of seconds, but a lifestyle to make all through the limit. When one knows they really want it, it’ll be a smooth talk to say yes to countless uncertainties laid over and be their own entrepreneur—not until carrying the load of being a student is its partner.
The house of cards startup
Starting a business from scratch is just like holding your first cards. Nothing is still so sure with the outcome to follow, and all you got in hand are a charge of courage and a pile of your goods. “I was nervous (about) what people (would) think about my products,” cosmetic counter SB Beauty Line owner Stacey Benitez (ABM24) admitted as she was creating the first layer of her house of cards.
Just like what others say, to begin with something is the toughest part of all, and making three thin cards stand altogether is a moment to prepare for. The owner of Doughknobs, a donut shop serving buckets of donut holes, also went through difficulties in its baby steps. “It’s really stressful when it comes to finding the perfect logo, packaging, sources of ingredients,” Andrei Olayon (STM27) expressed. Although building the foundation is much harder than one might think, these student entrepreneurs found its essence. “[The first steps] were challenging but when you finish it, it’s truly a fulfilling experience,” Benitez said. Some of the assets one earns from the first level are having to learn and study its field before getting over the next and harder tiers. Olayon shared, “I really got (to) use my creativity and skills to start putting up my business.”
Stacking cards has also given them the opportunity to take on new adventures within the business world. Just like Reichelle Macasaet (ABM15), the owner of one-stop scrunchie and sticker store G!RLS, who knew that experience is anything good once you cross over the entrepreneurship’s threshold. “It trains (me) to be stronger mentally and physically,” she added.
When the castle collapses
A house made of cards is something one can easily break off—may it be the wind passing by or the minimal movements made around. These are the risks and battles waiting for the student entrepreneurs as they continually go on with their businesses. Olayon defined it as possibilities that could cause loss, injury, or failure.
CLUBS
“Business is a According to Macasaet, “The struggle to focus and to manage your time [were its downsides].” The first obstruction has come, amounting to small stumbles of the progressing tower construction. “There are times that you’’ll have to choose between fulfilling orders or doing [school] assessments,” Benitez unfolded on being a student and a business owner at the same time. “[I]t’s hard having to pack orders, think of creative contents to post, take pictures of products, and (release) new products while there are still classes ongoing,” she added. Alas, the cards were too smooth that it slipped onto one another, and to start layering its first floor again won’t be as slick as the cards are. Olayon admitted on a different obstruction to go through,
good idea if you want to change the world slowly through your brand.
“I was risking my time, my energy, and my money to do my business.” There are points when there are a few to no customers for a business to satisfy just like what Macasaet and Olayon experienced. Risks will always be hard to bear, and to handle it seems so complicated to still pursue completing the card house. “It is draining as a student, giving your all out energy on both school life and business life,” Benitez disclosed. However, these obstacles didn’t hinder them from shaping their card castles for another chance.

“
The world of business surely has no limits, breaking the barricades of what was made as the standard. Putting it up once more
A house of cards will always look sleek and simple, but establishing an enterprise doesn’t go the same way as it appears. One may have gone back from the very first layer, but these student entrepreneurs still pushed through with what they wanted. Macasaet admitted, “I am aware of [the risks and battles], but I will not give up.” Because after all, in this world of business, “[F]acing risks is a thing you need to do whether you like it or not,” Benitez stated.
“[T]here’ll always be problems that will come along the way to test the entrepreneur’s skills to strategically work their way out of it,” Olayon conveyed. Cards may stumble upon each other, causing the house harder to finish assembling. However, those who are eager enough will always have the advantage to make it stand faster. Just like Macasaet who kept persevering as the student entrepreneur she is, “[I]f you really want to make it happen,
you do something about it, whether it is small or big.” This proves how entrepreneurship takes a heavy amount of courage on saying yes to its challenge, where one can either conquer or surrender. Olayon mentioned, “[I]t’s up to you if you’ll let these [hardships] get the best of you.” Along the goodness it serves is the confidence it draws, and these student entrepreneurs are its living testimony.
CLUBS
Awareness and sensibility of the mishaps on the line are some of the techniques to take on winning over the things that can make it collapse. He also shared that one should really assess the risks that are bound to happen and think if it’s really worth taking.
When the cards stand together
Amidst the darkness hidden in the shadows of the paper tower, the students—while being business people— saw how the process helped them on their way to where they are now. Benitez, Macasaet, and Olayon have mostly mastered its nature taken from all the collapses they’ve gone through while layering the tiers of their house of cards. “It gives me a glimpse of the real world and how commerce is functioning in our lives,” Olayon imparted. With the harshness thrown on new entrepreneurs while building the card house, they’ve witnessed how reality works out from each other’s safety nets. On the other hand, Benitez shared her sentiments about being in the field of business while taking up Accountancy
and Business Management strand. “It’s actually doing business rather than just reading about it. It’s the real life experience that helps me learn things more as a student.” Indeed, preparation and learning through assembling the paper tower is way better felt than read. Through entrepreneurship, channels for change and growth are extended. Thus, providing more space for society improvement. For Macasaet, “[B]usiness is a good idea if you want to change the world slowly through your brand.” By the huge influence it can bring, they didn’t settle to just be student entrepreneurs but also become the game changers in the community. “Thinking about what I can do or offer for other people is one of my drives [and inspiration],” Benitez voiced out.
***
The world of business surely has no limits, breaking the barricades of what was made as the standard. Just like a house of cards, it’s where everything is in the hands of the maker. It’s up to the challenge takers on how they will build it with their desired number of tiers
and maintain it until they reach their enterprise’s main goal. Fear can get in the way of being able to finish the challenge with the presence of a newly constructed tower, which might soon turn to regret after one turns its back. “Do it. You will never know if you don’t try,” Benitez advised for those who are still thinking thrice in starting up their own business. The cards may flip over caused by anything that obstructs the card castle from being formed, and it’s something one cannot eliminate from its track. In the world called business, there will be moments of defeat. But if you choose to place a pinch of passion on the card plate, you may get to feel the reward of hard work even in the tiniest bits. Nonetheless, as said by Macasaet, “By doing what you love, you never lose anything.” *Editor’s Note: We thank the following students for their valuable participation: Stacey Benitez, Jan Andrei Olayon, and Reichelle Macasaet. Sailing through the art of manifestation Words by Ma. Ladeevie Tamonan Art by Jericho Rasheed Celestino The enticing island is hundreds of nautical miles away from the shore. It is a place edified with utter magnificence, for millions of possibilities inhabit its soil. Once you set your feet on it, impossibility becomes immaterial and blissfulness is easy to procure. Thus, the will to sail forth to the currents of the untamable ocean ignites within. FROM CELEBRITIES AND prominent personalities to ordinary people, the Law of Attraction has been considered as an eminent way to successfully grasp triumph. According to Humanities and Social Sciences faculty Tricia Mae Tria, “When we say Law of Attraction, it is a branch of philosophy wherein positive thoughts bring positive results, while negative thoughts [breed] negative outcomes.” Mastering the Law of Attraction can be anything but easy, unless you start trying. The following are ways that can invigorate your voyage into manifesting your life’s greatest wishes.
Unravel the compass point
Before boarding the ship, one must first lay the map on the table and determine the exact destination. Discerning the goals before commencing the journey is extremely significant because without a specific target, one could not devise an effective plan. Moreover, one might be vanquished by the deceptive ocean waves, and be lost in the middle of its mystifying waters. “[Positivity] is important in general for it helps [us] to produce desirable experiences in life,” Tria said. Honing the optimistic side is the utmost priority and goal in the sphere of Law of Attraction. Establishing a well-built cornerstone of positivity is a must in order to have the adequate will to continue, and not be dissuaded from cynical perceptions that one might encounter along the grueling voyage. “[Positivity] gives us motivation to strive hard,” she added.
Unload baggages
No matter how massive the ship, one cannot prolong their deep and strong hold to all their possessions, especially
if it could slow the pace of one’s pursuit. Manifesting dreams could be hard especially when there are hives of things that presumably inflame people’s negativity. To focus solely on the brighter side, people must first let go of evil things that might eviscerate one’s optimistism. For instance, the despondency brought by social media. The information and convenience social media offers could be irrefutable, but it also houses too much hatred and toxicity. Therefore, if one would pour every ounce of effort to resist the temptation of scrolling through social media, sailing would be more bearable.
CLUBS
“One factor that could hinder our positivity ay ang environment natin, lalo na ‘yung sinasabi at nakikita natin sa paligid,” Tria remarked. Conquering the Law of Attraction is improbable especially when its foe—the weighty words and feelings of people around you—continue to be formidable. To cut ties with toxic friends and peers could be tremendously difficult, but if you won’t, they might pull you down in the depths of agony, and your quest in manifesting your life’s desire would turn into rubble. Also, people shall cleanse their own heart for it to be an effective space for love, kindness, and positivity. Sometimes, the chains that prevent us from moving toward change nestle within us. Dissolving insecurities, loathe, and toxic traits that you hoard for yourself and for others will be of great help to produce positive flickers of energy.
Navigate the routes
After giving up the excess baggage, one must aboard the ship and sail through the waters. If one fancies to arrive at the aspired destination at a quicker pace, it is highly suggested to explore and discover different ways. Doing something that tickles your heart may prevent further doubts that might ensnare you. As you continue flourishing your optimistic side, the more the possibility of grasping your heart’s deepest longing skyrockets. From cooking, listening to the orchestra of nature, reading adventures from books, or writing—whatever it is that pleases and satisfies you—could help you achieve success, and master the art of the Law of Attraction. “Malaking factor [ang paggawa ng nakakapagpasaya sa’yo] kasi ‘di ba kapag you do something with passion, iba ang [positive] feeling na ibinibigay niya,’’ Tria answered when asked about the things that could contribute to one’s happiness.
To manifest dreams, one could also immerse themselves on foreign diversions to widen the breadth of people’s perspectives and convert negative thoughts into positive ones. “Minsan nagiging way siya para madivert natin ang atensyon natin sa ibang bagay, and to avoid overthinking,” Tria mentioned. Also, with this, you could start to appreciate other things you have overlooked or underestimated before.
Being one with the waves
Upon passing through the routes, you are left with only one task—engraving your faith in the ocean as you continue sailing to the island. As a venturer, you cannot foresee what the marvelous horizon holds.
The things one could do are to live in the present while giving every bit of effort you have, and trusting the process with hopes that your chosen road will lead to the most desirable outcome. “Present is always perfect, huwag kang magmadali,” Tria elucidated. “May mistakes and struggles, yet at the end of the day, mayroon tayong mapupulot na life lesson,” she added. Surfing through the flow of destiny means embracing the fact that whatever path one takes, it will never be devoid of rough patches. As many know, struggles are part of pursuit’s anatomy. It was ingrained to its system—pain, difficulty, and failure, but even with all these gauches, one should take a look beyond for wisdom nestles between its spaces.
***
Once you arrive on the island of positivity, endless possibilities might gracefully wave upon you. The route into mastering the Law of Attraction could be a varied ocean of sunshine and rain— nevertheless, the possibility of achieving a dream through it makes the journey less ominous.

Cease the Chase:
A guide for a deserved weekend break Words by Andrea Kristine Lazaro and Zhaine Luisse Toledo Art by Maria Sophia Emelda Initorio
A profound person will grasp on to knowledge and thoroughly seek a response from questions unknown. A wise fellow is intelligent enough to learn an individual’s capacity, and a clever one can understand that everyone only has one chance to live freely. Though working the mind intensely seems brilliant and astonishing, what if the body’s limit is the collateral for all the intelligence acquired? SOMEWHERE ALONG THE track to success is a determined individual, chasing after each checkpoint. Consuming every bit of energy and neglecting the scream of the body longing for rest. Their lips begin trembling and yet they keep going because stopping isn’t on the list—but at what cost? It’s time to take a different path for a moment and ease off from the stress with these personal care tips on maintaining peace after running through a hasty road of school works.
01
Step 2: Treat yourself with goodness
Step 1: Revive your withered hobbies
Amid students’ tight schedules, it’s difficult to squeeze in the outlets that channel their creative energy. The hobbies that brought light into their lives would get lost under all the responsibilities they’d always prioritize, as to why the world may start feeling gray. Needless to say, life isn’t just as interesting when days are solely composed of tasks waiting to get done. Bring color back into your life by choosing to rekindle with an old passion that was lost in all the chaos. The spark in one’s lives—so to speak. Whatever it may be, take advantage of the weekends in making a conscious decision to reimmerse with activities that make the world less dull. So, pick up that dusty guitar, write that story you’ve been imagining, or grab that bucket of paint brushes. Remind yourself how fun it is to fully succumb to your creative endeavors.
There is nothing more exciting than coming back to your favorite foods after a long week of stress. During weekdays, it seems impossible to enjoy food while pondering about all the deadlines. While enjoying these delicious treats, you might be reminded of all your requirements which can possibly lead to an unhealthy eating practice. Hence, why not eat it during your two-day break? As time is the ultimate opponent on weekdays, try dedicating your break on indulging your choice of delectable treats. Prepare your favorite treats and let your list have a range of different flavors you are missing. Take a bite of that candy or chocolate to fill up your happy meter or eat that salty chip to chase the sugar away. Be good to yourself and grab these foods to satisfy your cravings and regain that energy you lost.

Step 3: Enter a new world of fantasies
As you are loaded in discovering everything about academics, why not discover a new universe within the palm of your hands or even in front of a screen? During a 48-hour break, it definitely is possible to explore the whole world. Flick on the screen of your gadgets, tune it to your favorite show, and enter a world full of new adventures It seems impossible to resist the idea of lounging inside a cozy room and binging a show of your choice. Thus, unwind by quenching your visual thirst from a show you have been eyeing for so long. Try different genres and shake your senses with horror, fall in love in the world of romance, burst and shed tears from laughter with comedy, or unlock that conclusive part of your mind in crime and investigation. Lean back, relax, and let entertainment be part of your weekend getaway to step out from reality for a time.
Step 4: Escape the headaches
With the unending number of responsibilities clamoring for one’s attention, sometimes, a good ol’ shut-eye is what they’re missing. After all, who doesn’t want to forget all their worries for a while? Oftentimes, it becomes easy to get caught up with all the work waiting to get done. The sagging bags under the eyes, getting darker and darker, serves as a reminder that the body is longing for rest. People can use this 48-hour break to satisfy their bodies by complying with the recommended sleeping hours in a day. An 8 to 10-hour sleep may sound elusive for some people, especially to the ones who wish to tick off as many boxes in their seemingly endless to-do list. However, it’s important to use the weekends as a break from one’s responsibilities. Take this time to freshen up your mind after endlessly catching up on all the deadlines. Turn off your alarms, fluff up your pillows, and drift into utter bliss for as long as you need.

The win over the weight Words by Stephanie Nicole Rabacal Photos by Danielle Denise Lazo, Directed by Ollie Alexandra Lanzar
Everyone can make footsteps to draw their pace on alleys. Anyone can have some weight for them to carry. Day by day, these seem like tasks every person has to do and put up with. But how come the lanes are becoming more narrow to walk through as things begin to collide? How come the loads are getting heavier to bear as one becomes the nation’s pride?
49
BOWLING BALLS BROUGHT Danielle Denise “Dale” Lazo to the vastness of international alleys representing the Philippines. To make every roll go down the target pins is her primary goal, even with the great weight of the ball and the country’s name combined.
Setting the stance
Dale started her bowling career back in 2012 when she was just an 8-yearold roaming around bowling centers. Known as the active kid in the family, she revealed that bowling wasn’t her first sport at all. “Nagsimula ako sa iba’t ibang sports. Sa swimming, sa basketball, sa badminton,” but the slick surface of bowling lanes was what captured her from then on.
“Ayun, nag-proper training ako and... nakitaan ako ng potential ng coach ko,” she said. Coming from the little girl she was, the bowler had the sport as something for her to only enjoy and grow fond of, at first. But being in the field for almost a decade, Dale didn’t spare any chances to shoot her shot in becoming a nation’s pride for bowling. By 2017, she began exploring its grounds, where athletes are nurtured on bringing the Philippine flag along their grips and plays. She reminisced how she
ruled the tryouts being the youngest on the lineup, “Nakaka-proud kasi pinaghandaan ko ‘yun, hindi lang siya basta-basta na ‘ah sasali ako sa national team’.” Dale didn’t hesitate, uttering with conviction, “[H]indi porket bata ako, hindi porket kakasimula ko lang or ilang taon pa lang akong nag-bo-bowling, hindi ko na deserve maging [parte ng] national team.” With the immeasurable weight of hard work, she disclosed that years were spent before the tryouts to make sure that a spot on the national team shall be hers. She made it possible through the tiresome training she worked upon during weekdays after school and on weekends with her initiative. “Literal na dugo at pawis talaga ‘yung dinanas ko noon, and worth it naman...sobra,” she chuckled, remembering her journey towards becoming a national athlete.
50
“Hindi sa lahat ng oras mananalo, and it’s natural.
Blown down the gutter
To take on the call is to get ready and to watch out for its load, and Dale has already been familiarized by it beforehand. She was seen to battle up in different tournaments representing either her association or the country. It is already usual for her to play in around 20 competitions locally and participate once or twice internationally in a stretch of a year. However, going further down her own alley has made the weight of the bowling ball much heavier, dominating Dale whenever she steps in the arena. “May time talaga na sobrang pagod na ‘ko,” she unveiled while looking back to the grim side of bowling, “[P]arang hindi ko na natutulungan ‘yung sarili ko.” The drawback on her physical wellness sprung over after becoming the national athlete she is. She narrated how her week is stuffed with obligations from bowling and school. Their everyday training is to be attended in Mandaluyong, Rizal where workouts, actual practice, and mental conditioning must be covered.
Tapos syempre may pressure, may injuries,” Dale disclosed. There were many instances where succumbing from all the hardships were deemed close to happen, feeling like a hefty bowling ball hanging by a thread.
Barely bearing the ball
To have the name of the Philippines embedded on your back is fulfilling, yet in its every ounce of pride comes the pressure attached. Dale admitted that it has taken effect on her before. She added, “[H]indi rin maiiwasan sa field ng bowling ‘yung maraming pumupuna sa likod mo, or ‘yung mga taong nag-co-compare sa‘yo sa ibang players.” The compelling curb the arena gives her rooted from so many—from the sharp eyes of the crowd, the opponents, and her coaches. And most especially, from her parents who were always by her side every second, endlessly rooting for her. She shared her experience in representing the Philippines in the 19th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling
Championships 2018 in Taiwan where her loss didn’t seem ideal for Dale. “As in sobrang sama ng laro ko...pati ‘yung coach ko na-fu-frustrate na rin kasi that time, umiiyak na ‘ko sa lanes while bowling.” She also encountered awful words after being the talk of the town, pertaining to how weak her play was by then. As much as the bowler wanted to lead forward, the fast lanes got more narrow and to allot space in positioning her body was close to impossible. The pressure caving in made her reach the point where surrendering was an option in mind. Nonetheless, Dale didn’t let the overwhelming weight consume her. “[M]adami na akong pinagdaanang ups and downs, na sobrang saya, sobrang lungkot, sobrang sakit, sobrang hirap,” she opened up. “(Pero) sobrang worth it naman sa’kin kasi...passion ko na ‘to eh.”

“Love what you do. Buwelo
Although she left Taiwan already, the unexpected burnout didn’t leave Dale yet. She found herself struggling to carry the load on another match, lacking the strength to still aim for gold. Entering the arena to compete in the Philippine International Open 2018, “Sobrang up and down ‘yung [state] ko nu’n,” the bowler expressed, “‘Yun ‘yung time na sinabi ko talaga sa coach ko na...hindi ko na kaya.” But this time around, something was different from how it was similar from the previous league. “Nasa puso ko pa rin na, ‘kakayanin ko kasi kinaya ng iba’,” was the motivation that helped her disrupt everything behind and make the ball’s immense load drive itself into a strike. Until now, she always reminds herself, “Dapat gawin mo ‘yung best mo kasi Philippines ‘yung nakalagay sa likod mo, hindi lang naman Dale Lazo.”
Amidst the weight within, Dale managed to take home three trophies and step onto the podium. These were the national athlete’s first ever victories internationally—the best experience she ever had in her bowling career by far. “Malaking achievement ‘yun sa’kin kasi despite na sobrang down ko that time, I still managed to play above my average,” she proudly conveyed. After a year at the same tournament, Dale did not settle on letting her country go down the gutter. She had finally claimed the highest title after taking down the pins with strikes, becoming champion of the Philippine International Open 2019 Youth Girls Division. Gaining the pleasure of being interviewed by journalists, having her name featured on
news articles, and most of all, getting to her feet once again in the enormous alley. It was something unbelievable for her— truly a game changer. The bowler discovered her way to triumph from the immense load she had to bring along. Having her coach and family served as Dale’s motivation to still power through every game, “Sila ‘yung nandun at sumusuporta sa’kin...araw-araw.” And above all else, “Tinutulungan ko (rin) ‘yung sarili ko para hindi ako sumuko ng basta-basta, kasi syempre nandito na ako eh, nasa national team na ako. Ngayon pa ba ako susuko?” she stressed into a remark.

Strike!
Rising from the grounds, she resembled how a defeat can be a win, too. “Hindi sa lahat ng oras mananalo, minsan may pagkakamali (rin) tayong magagawa, and it’s natural.” The tussles stumbled upon did more than just weaken the national athlete, but taught her more about the battle. Even though the country’s emblem has added weight for her to carry on, it was also what she had held to be indestructible in her own ball track. To be clothed with a Philippine flag enclosed her with pride. Bringing much dedication, Dale made sure that the country won’t go home without earning something. “Palagi kong isinasaisip na I’ll do my best (in) every frame. Being in the monumental bowling arenas for nearly a decade, Dale didn’t just play her hardest fighting for her country. This, from a little girl to a grown woman, became her drive to also learn the art of living above anything else. Back then, everything seemed to be going into the gutter for Dale. Even when the load has held firm, the grip has clenched perfectly, and everything else she needed was already in the alley. There was only one thing missing— which she then found clasped in her own hands. “Love what you do,” she fiercely stated, “Marami kang matututunan kung mamahalin mo ‘yung isang bagay.”

For all the sweat that broke down, the tears that streamed off, and the eyes that turned away, it was what made one stand steady and staunch on its ground. In the vastness of reality, the greater the weight gets, the stronger the bearer becomes— and it’s something you would never never know unless you have endured it deep down. *Editor’s Note: We thank Danielle Denise “Dale” Lazo for her valuable participation.

“[Stingy people] cheap out on the stuff that they want to get and some don’t even buy anything that they want,” saad ni Simon Agustin (ICT21) na inilalarawan ang sarili bilang isang kuripot.
“[I] used to spend a lot of my money on useless stuff before and I experienced having no money during important times,” kanyang ipinagtapat.

Aatras, aabante, aatras, aabante muli.
“Masaya at maginhawa

Once the pigments smear Words by Jedd Rudolf Caldo Art by Evalene Vianca De Jesus Throughout generations, pristine minds can bleed through a jet-black ink of outlooks highlighting one sex over another. Behind the bursts of paint, women are footing their ground in this arena. These lionhearted heroines yearn for a fairground in this tar-like playground. Time runs out and a sudden realization hits— is there any opponent at all? SPLATTERS, PUDDLES, AND streaks of ink stick to the pure intentions of feminism, struggling to deliver a message amid the ever-growing lies linked to it. “Feminism, for me, is a political movement fighting for the equality of men and women. [However], as time evolved, it is no longer limited to that. It is [aiming] for equality of all [genders],” former Humanities and Social Sciences faculty Mikaela Yap said as she explained feminism’s immense growth over time.
Inking the blueprint
Behind feminism’s impactful and ambitious plans, pioneers have a concrete blueprint that holds their platform together. Hatred towards other genders is not one of these sketches that pass
the blueprint. Francyn Agatha Bayudan (STM15) believes that, “[B]eing a feminist is [accepting] that not only women, but every gender, [even] men, deserves equal rights.” As the walls and boundaries began to break beyond their plans, the female trailblazers held their heads up high. “(Feminists) [give] voices to [silenced] people who [are] victims of domestic violence...and so much more regardless of [their] gender,” Leah Denise Acosta (STM17) added. As time progresses, a lot of changes may happen far from the platform’s blueprint. Though some of the tallest buildings seem untouchable, a mission with true intentions has a solid foundation for triumph. It may be challenging to set aside the misconceptions, but reminiscing
the blueprint behind the movement shows the path towards clarity and closure.
Stains of misunderstanding
With each stroke of goodwill is a casted shadow of chaos. Misconceptions such as misogyny and false standards stain the reputable canvas. Sophia Nicole Miranda (HMS22) shared an encounter with a friend who always made misogynistic jokes in bad taste. “[H]e would bring up how [unimportant] feminism was and how he was [not fond of feminism],” she said. Being constrained in a bordered canvas, women may be unable to fully manifest the abilities they are capable of. Miranda disclosed that after sharing a post about the red-tagging of female activists, comments such as “Edi pwede

“Why is it that when [talking] about feminism, the first thing that people think of is immediately using violence against women as a form of equality?” she expressed. Peeking into the white sheets are blotches of ink stains that envelop its perimeter. A glistening facade that stands for equity is now dimmed by a fabrication of half-truths and even lies. Setting aside the disappointment within, feminists proceed with their journey, carrying hope and conviction that the day will come when most people will finally understand. An output in a short amount of time is an absolutely impeccable feeling—and can sometimes be addicting.
Catching the disappearing ink
As one’s lens fail to see the truth, the other half perceives the world in a different light. The scattered lies hidden in these splashes may be hard to detect, but not everyone fails to educate themselves. Though feminism may be an uneasy topic for some, enlightening oneself and fully understanding its purpose before coming up with a conclusion may prevent the indign hate thrown towards feminism.
Plodding in a world where the truth is easily stained, surrounding oneself with cultured friends might be the move to make when seeking the truth. “I believe that my friends are knowledgeable enough about the topic of feminism to think otherwise (about) what it really means,” Bayudan imparted. There are a lot of things that can happen in a blink of an eye that we never get to see. Trusting faded palettes instead of the ones that show their real intentions may hinder someone in the long run. Losing hope will let the lies bleed through even further, but there are always those who understand and show the path towards the missing ink.
Using the splattered platform
Giving insights to the misunderstandings buried in deceptive colors is something that can be done on a centerstage, like social media. Miranda shared that she is not ashamed of using her platform to voice out her opinions and stand for the truth. “I want to spread awareness and hopefully educate others who are ignorant about issues like this,” she discussed. A sense of unanimity arises as to the message echoes and surrounds the arena. Charizza Joy Acosta (STM18)
also uses her platform to spread solidarity amongst great women. She conveyed, “Usually, the comment section of eyeopening posts pertaining to situations is what we need to be aware of.” No matter how big or small one’s platform may be, a message full of conviction can do wonders. The dissemination and correction of misconceptions may accelerate by taking advantage of social media. The voices transcend beyond one’s hearing, clearing off the falsity one word at a time. *** With the inks splattered across the arena, it might be hard to find the benevolence of feminism. An ounce of hope remains, hoping that the false colors fade in time. “Open your minds and look at the right sources for the correct information regarding feminism,” Yap advises the next generation. The heroine trudges her own journey, disregarding the ink stains, she leaves footprints that show the path for the next generation. It may be easy to be blinded by the tints of falsehood, but finding the vibrant colors may show you the veracity buried underneath.

Beneath victories: Who's the impostor? Words by Ma. Ladeevie Tamonan Art by Rania Marie Pucan
Having the gift of exceptional brilliance, numerous awards, and excellent abilities in various fields, people often develop admiration for student achievers. Marked with fascination, they could unconsciously perceive successful people as something perfectly-crafted and transcendental. Little did they know, beneath their luminous facades lie the true cracks of a human—doubts and insecurities brought by five hidden faces.
HUMANS, AS SUCCESSFUL as they are, could not help but play the strings of negativity. According to DLSU-D Junior High School faculty Patricia Ann Ocampo, “Most of the time, [achievers] do not appreciate what [they] are achieving at the moment. We might overlook what we are achieving because minsan, iniisip natin na hindi natin ito deserve.” She also said that these negativities and doubts that people encounter are also associated with a phenomenon called Impostor Syndrome, which has five imminent visages.
THE PERFECTIONIST Doing everything with utmost excellence could be the most important task for a Perfectionist. They often hoard a herd of high expectations. They pour their efforts out—aiming for the best—for flawless outcomes. “A perfectionist person is (someone) who is afraid to fail and is eager to have a perfect way of living,” Aleeza Mari Manuel (STM25) said. People, who are convinced that perfection is tantamount to success, always feel the unwanted embrace of doubts whenever they commit even the smallest of mistakes. “Sobrang taas ng standards ko sa sarili ko and when I fail, even a little mistake, nag-be-breakdown na agad ako kasi na-fi-feel ko na I’m a failure,” Manuel stated as she reminisced her struggles as a Perfectionist. Perfectionists are believed to frequently combat doubts because satisfaction doesn’t come often and naturally to them. In this life, one might not always have perfect scores and gold medals; that’s why being a perfectionist could be extremely hard.
THE NATURAL GENIUS It is only first-try achievements that could truly measure one’s success for the Natural Genius. “‘(Y)ung feeling na mag-succeed ka (on) the first [try], it feels different,” Hazel Reyes (ABM24) commented. Failing to attain victory on first attempt could provoke their doubts, and might make hearing the symphony of satisfaction nothing but a far-fetched fantasy. Somehow, Natural Geniuses and Perfectionists are almost the same. As stated by Ocampo, both classifications set immensely high standards, it is just that Natural Geniuses find delight in getting success at a quicker pace. (O)ccasionally, I (doubt) if I’m actually smart enough,” Reyes added as she expressed her experiences on being a Natural Genius.

THE SOLOIST Asking and getting help is something a Soloist impostor’s last resort. “‘Pag alam ko na kaya ko, why would I ask for help? I’m super thankful for all the help pero iba kasi ‘yung satisfaction na you did it all by yourself,” Janina Sunga (HMS21) said as she was narrating her tales and struggles on being a Soloist. The greatest ally of a Soloist is solitude, that’s why whenever they feel the need to ask for help, insecurities get the best of them—questioning their capabilities and victories. “Parang nanghihina ako (gano’n). Like aawayin ko ‘yung self ko (and I will say), (I) should know this and dapat kaya mo na ‘yan,” Sunga mentioned. A call for help could mean good for someone, but in the perspective of Soloists, it is a sign that they are lacking.
THE SUPERHERO We peg heroes as someone who always feels the urge to save and bring honor to everyone. A superhero often conceals their insecurities behind a deceptive façade made of hard work. “Pi-nu-push ko ‘yung sarili ko na maging magaling sa mga bagay na necessary sa buhay ko,” Joshua Samartino (STM23), a consistent honor student and an achiever stated. “Gusto ko kasi ako ‘yung taong may napapatunayan.” Superheroes are afraid to be labeled as someone inferior, that’s why even with the pain brought by bruises, working hard to be good in all aspects of life is their utmost priority. “(Siguro) nag-do-doubt ako sa sarili ko kapag hindi ako magaling sa isang bagay and (also) I feel down,” Samartino admitted. Because of the lingering doubts daunting the achievers, their confidence inevitably subverts. Sometimes, they even end up participating in a competition that only exists in their minds because they compare themselves to others. It’s believed that trying to measure up to other’s success always fuels their will to work harder. To topple the lingering doubts, they must be always at their best in all fields.
THE EXPERT This concealed visage of achievers always find delight in immersing themselves in preparation to prevent unwarranted disappointments. “Alam ko na (kailangan) ko munang pag-aralan (nang) mabuti ang bawat task o assessment para magawa ko nang tama,” Juliana Marcial (ABM21) said as she considers herself as an Expert. They are always filled with apprehension that’s why they appease themselves by polishing everything first. The Experts might not have the ability to turn their backs to other people’s opinions. Their hearts can be filled with worries about how other eyes perceive them. The fear Experts feel towards the malevolent judgements could be too consuming—to the point that they would push themselves into their limits just to evade negative comments.
***
The five faces of Impostor Syndrome have proven that beneath the golden medals and awards are humans who also have their own moments of insecurities. As people of excellence struggle on numerous tempests of life, they hold on to the glistening thought that someday, every doubt will deliver them to the brighter side. “The fact that I have doubts, it only means I should do better. I use my doubts as motivation,” Sunga expressed how achievements can spring to life because of Impostor Syndrome. With this, we can say that there will always be blessings even in the face of adversaries.

“(The) stage really caught my attention. I told myself [that] I want to be there one day,” aniya.

I would literally do anything para lang ma-avoid sila,” sabi ni Von. Dagdag niya, “I knew deep down, I really wanted the environment I was in. It took some time...to gain that confidence.” “[Theater] is beyond entertainment. This is something different—this is more than just me,” kanyang inilahad.

“I take [acting] personally kasi I know that (this) character na pino-project ko…this is somebody else’s life,” aniya. “When you deeply understand things, you tend to give it more value.”
“The show must go on. I used that [negative critique] to really push [myself] further,” sabi niya. “I gave my best. [And] they did not see the sacrifices that I made to be able to perform in front of them.”
“(Most) of the time, we put our worth in other people’s hands…they could not give it to us, they could only show it to us.
“I (realized) that in the process of looking for worth—that I already have in myself— from other people…I was already losing myself,” ika ni Von tungkol sa pakiramdam ng kawalan na kanyang naranasan noong malabo pa ang perspektibo niya sa pagkakaroon ng sariling saysay.

“It took some time [for me] to gain confidence. “‘Yung worth na mayroon ka, it just keeps on growing,” aniya. “If you focus on [growing your worth], everything will fall into place.”

Nightly rituals: get it straight from the nocturnals Words by Stephanie Nicole Rabacal and Sophia Angela Silva Photos by Tricia Faye Velasco
By the time the upper regions have turned into a lucid night sky, its ambience hugs your body, snicking the signal for the usual human bedtime. Long-running lights were then shut, the uninterrupted television was switched off, and the daylight noise got put out. But even with the cozy and mellow warmth rubbed to people, there are those whose eyes are wide open with wrecked body clocks—not ending their days even during nights.

“NIGHT OWLS’’ ARE seen as people who are active and awake at late hours. You may have been one of them without instantly noticing and found yourself openeyed in the dead of night, not knowing how to kill hours until slumber sinks in. Sure, it is as countless as the stars, but here are the nocturnals’ tips when the mind keeps you up like raptors of the night.
“
Set the clocks back
As the clock continues to tick, do you ever think of how its tiny arms tell you what to do and when to do it? Nowadays, clocks can be adjusted with ease with just a touch of one’s fingertips. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about body clocks. Even if some nocturnals wish to sleep early, their body clock has no intent to compromise. “[It is] my [accustomed] sleep schedule that affects it,” Lynxion* stated.
Lynxion offered that sleeping an hour earlier than your usual sleep scheme helps one to get more rest. “[S]ince sleeping habits can’t be changed that quickly, (you) can take slow measures to [correct your body clocks],” he said. If all else fails, he suggested that turning off gadgets and putting them away, so you won’t succumb to reaching it in your bed, could also be an effective remedy.
But even with the cozy and mellow warmth rubbed to people, there are those whose eyes are wide open with wrecked body clocks—not ending their days even during nights.

Dismiss those graveyard shifts
While some become night owls involuntarily, there are people who prefer the nights more than the days. Just like Vien Carbonel (HMS13), they get to be more productive “because evenings tend to have a quieter atmosphere which leads to fewer distractions.” The small hours’ serenity eases them, allowing more room for mindfulness. Being productive is likely to be a good thing, not until one habitually does it in a bad way. “[Staying up late] has affected my daily activities drastically,” Carbonel admitted, whereas morning classes and a good appetite got harder to be attended to. The fondness to work during bedtime can be dragged out by avoiding to eat
at late nights and being mindful of the time. She also advised, “Accomplish your responsibilities in the morning and relax in the evening.”
Knock the lights out
Others may think that the silence of the night is therapeutic and calming, however, a few would disagree as it makes the deafening sounds of their thoughts reverberate around the room. John Gabriel Dela Cruz (STM112) confessed that “[having] a lot of problems to fix and think about” was the key reason as to why he has delayed sleeping schedule. As good as it is to think of possible solutions to your problems in advance, stressing out over them at night may not be the best option. “(Sometimes), bad sleeping habits make me lose the
whole day,” Dela Cruz admitted. That being said, he recommended to cross out overthinking from a late night to-do list to refrain yourself from being consumed by thoughts at the brink of the night.
***
Being referred to as a night owl may sound quite interesting at first, but it can also wreck your overall well-being as each rest gets disturbed in the long run. “I have seen its negative effects on my daily routine and it’s already time to fix it,” Carbonel expressed. The cold breeze and calming aura may either get you fascinated, absorbed, or stirred at the hours of the night, yet slow adjustments on correcting the sleep pattern may make you want to start witnessing the enchanting rise of daylight.

Comfort in the shade Words by Erin Ruth Flores Art by Chynna Ysabelle Brugada
Everyone sees differently while wearing glasses; some may see a much clearer view, others rose-tinted, and a few may see things zoomed in or far away. There are those, however, the eyeglasses that may see things in a somber manner. Going through life, people may encounter many experiences in their daily lives that can make or break them. Some could handle these well while others don’t, leading them to overthink and even acquiring a pessimistic view of life. PESSIMISM HAS BEEN used wrongly for a long time. Many people have a lot of misconceptions about it, causing more harm than good to the pessimists that are close to them. “[Pessimists] are misunderstood because (people) see them in a general way, but every individual thinks differently and so (do pessimists),” Cloud* shared. In this generation where misinformation and misjudgement are high, it’s time that we clear the negative views surrounding the phenomena of pessimism.

Blurry vision
Wearing pessimistic spectacles is not often perceived well by the majority. There are some that have negative beliefs about it. “People often assume that when one thinks (negatively), that (type of) thinker has a tendency of giving up on something that they want to do,” Matt* shared. However, it can be more than that—for some, it can act as a coping mechanism and as a means of motivating themselves. According to Cloud, “[Pessimism] is a fixed mindset (that makes you) assume the worst (about) every decision (that) you make, (as well as) how you see yourself.” Thinking negatively could affect the daily choices of pessimists which could lead to missing good opportunities because of this mentality. Pessimism is clearly something no one aspires to look through, yet there are still people that choose to continue seeing through those glasses.
Inverted lenses
There are many factors that can explain why some people continue to wear the glasses of pessimism, and one of these is overthinking. “Overthinkers are usually the ones affected by [pessimism] the most,” DLSU-D Student Wellness Center Counselor Michelle Garingo said. Overthinkers have the propensity to think the worst-case scenario, which could even lead to anxiety and sometimes low self-esteem. Because of this, a pessimist might have a tendency to pass up opportunities in fear that they’re not good enough or not suitable for it. The presence of negative experiences is another reason why people have pessimistic views. Jae* reminisced an experience during their childhood, “(I was told that I wasn’t) good enough...that I’d only embarrass myself. I believed (it), and that kind of mindset stuck with me.” Most pessimists recall unpleasant memories because it is easier than remembering happy ones. According to an article from The New York Times, “Negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones, thus, we tend to ruminate more about unpleasant events—and use stronger words to describe them—than happy ones.”
“It’s not like a switch that I
can turn off, and if I could, I would’ve turned it off ages ago. Monochromatic haze
People that look through pessimistic lenses have both successes and consequences from it. For some pessimists, negative thinking affects them positively. “People like me who are afraid of (failures or changes) could accept negative outcomes more easily since we were already expecting it to happen in the first place,” Jae mentioned. Because of this, there are times that this mindset could actually help an individual excel in certain aspects of their life. Pessimism can also act as one’s defense mechanism to avoid failures and disappointments. However, there are some who pass through bad experiences by wearing it. “Anxiety comes with the fact that pessimism can make me think of baseless assumptions,” Matt stated. When overthinking wins over the conscious mind, there are times that thinking rationally starts to get hard. Daily tasks and choices become difficult to accomplish as negative thoughts slowly cover one’s eyes, temporarily blinding them. Jade Sia (STM21) shared, “[W]henever I (make) a decision, I feel bad that I didn’t choose the right one.”
A cleared view
One can remove their glasses anytime they please, but if they become dependent on them, taking it out of their sight will be a daunting task for them. No matter how hard one tries to control it, the negative thoughts that race through the head of an individual becomes difficult to filter through and manage. “It’s not like a switch that I can turn off, (and if I could, I would’ve) turned it off ages ago,” Cloud mentioned. People often assume that thinking positively is an easy thing to do but in fact, it isn’t. The phrase “be positive” has been used by people to dismiss pessimism. Yet these words are just easier said
than done. For others, being positive is almost an unachievable thing because one can’t help but think like that. Jae said pessimism can help an individual to strive and be strong, one shouldn’t feel bad if you think negatively. “So please know that you’re valid despite what (others) might say,” they stated. Although negative thoughts can be hard to control, it can however be avoided even for a little while. Garingo advised, “If there would be some students that experience pessimism, it would be best to talk to a counselor para matulungan (sila on) how to help them distract their thoughts from their negativity.”
***
The world can be viewed in various ways depending on the person, and the perspective of each and everyone changes based on the spectacles they wear. For the onlookers, the idea of pessimism seems bleak while for those who wear the glasses, it can give off a comforting feeling. It acts as a shield to protect their eyes from rays and particles that may obstruct their view. There are others that see themselves as someone terrible for not having a positive attitude while all people cope with failures and disappointments in many and distinct ways. Forcing oneself to think positively can—not just make it worse—but be detrimental to their health. Misconceptions about pessimism had clouded people’s perception for a long time, but now we can see through their lenses and gain deeper insights into the mind of a pessimist. *Editor’s Note: Identities are hidden behind pseudonyms.

Past the skin,
uncovering what’s within Words by Sophia Angela Silva Art by Evalene Vianca De Jesus
The moment the doors clicked shut, the weight on one’s shoulders suddenly felt lighter, though the weariness within felt heavier. The vanity gleams maliciously as if to remind its authority, luring empty eyes to face the mirror and question their sanity. Imprisoned for something given—that was never wanted nor asked for—and be treated indifferently for a “crime” they have not committed. The world’s strongest chains are suddenly put to shame, for one’s skin is a far more difficult confinement to escape. SKIN-SHAMING IS a phenomenon that has been going on for centuries and is still prevalent today. It only takes a few seconds to throw a snarky remark about how a person’s skin looks while it takes a whole lifetime to recover from those wounds.
A prisoner of conscience
Joking remarks are thrown left and right, and tears start to form from the kid getting picked on. As those children grow older, when will the line be drawn between what can be perceived as mere jokes and insensitive comments? Imee Reyes (HMS22) expressed. Because of getting used to being imprisoned in such bullying for a long time, she chose to just brush the negative comments off. Making fun of others may be fun for some, but not for the ones being made fun of, Reyes recalled on why she was a common target of skin-shaming. “‘[P]ag naiinis daw ako, natutuwa sila,” she said. Children, being as they are, may have difficulties identifying the difference from playful teasing to harsh remarks. It wouldn’t be a surprise if one’s very first experience of skin-shaming was through tolerating peers being skin-shamed, just like Jhanell Desquitado (ABM12).
As those children look back, they realize that those harmless jokes were doing more harm than their younger minds could have imagined, that it was when their skin started to weigh more than it should.
“
At the end of the day, all you really have is yourself. So always do it for yourself and not for others. Chained to the rhythm
Handcuffs didn’t hinder them as lights pointing towards the stage suddenly glowed brighter as the show commenced, ending the trip down memory lane. However, the pressure from the crowd’s piercing gaze and the weight of the chains
became too heavy to carry, causing the performer to miss a step in their choreography. Unfortunately, the ocean of judging eyes did not miss a beat. Reyes and Desquitado reminisced how skin-shaming put their self-confidence off the barricade, which became the most affected aspect of their lives. Reyes admitted that because of her insecurities, she missed several opportunities. “I love to perform. (Pero) nag-try lang ako sumali sa mga dance group sa school noong Grade 10, [imbis na nagawa] ko na sana ‘yun since (Grade 7),” she revealed. Overthinking was another link in the chain to be carried, as it affected Desquitado badly that she would always feel conscious about her skin. She also disclosed losing a few chances to be in the spotlight because the clutches of insecurities kept her restrained. “Nag-start [ako magkaroon ng acne] (noong) summer [before Grade 10], so (noong) [auditions] sa [C]heerdance, nahiya akong mag-audition kasi affected na ‘yung self-esteem ko.” Even as time has passed, the harsh grip of the past still continues to haunt them as their fears slowly became regrets.
SPADES
She also quipped that people shouldn’t change for external validation, saying, “[A]t the end of the day, [all] you really have is yourself. [So] always do it for yourself and not for others.” Despite healing from the wounds of being skin-shamed, having others bleed as they undergo the same situation is out of the question. Desquitado added that if she were to experience or witness skinshaming again, “[I]-e-educate ko na ‘yung person para [hindi na maranasan ng iba] ‘yung [naranasan] ko.”
Once restrained, now refined
Healed but scarred
Wounds from those shackles are far more difficult to deal, especially if it’s one that the eyes can’t see. Reyes confessed that as those wounds re-opened, “Di-nidismiss [ko lang pala] ‘yung (sakit) [that skin-shaming brought me] through the years instead of being healed kasi up until now, [I realized] na affected pa (rin) ako.” Some wounds may run deeper than others, but not all are too deep for the healing. Scarred? Definitely. Healed? Eventually. The ghost of the wound still lingers, despite the chains being long undone, but it’s no longer a haunting piece of the past. Now, it has become a reminder to be a better version of one’s self.
The rattling of chains as they fell on the cold floor echoed through the walls, which meant one thing—the taste of freedom has come at last. Despite not knowing what the future holds, they chose to face it headstrong as they embrace their battle scars. Desquitado advised to start loving oneself first. “[When] you love yourself, you’ll start doing things that you love without thinking and [caring about what others may think].” It may be easier said than done, but it’s also important to persevere towards this freeing mindset. You can do whatever you want without being bothered,” she added. Take it from Reyes on preferring the beauty in one’s personality over physical beauty, as she was once someone who was constantly defined by the confinement of her physical appearance. Reyes imparted her takeaways from situations where others pointed out her skin’s state, “(That’s when I learned that) it’s all about the character (and) not the appearance for me.”
***
“[H]indi natin maiiwasan ‘yung comments and judgement ng ibang tao pagdating sa atin. [K]ilala mo naman ‘yung sarili mo, that’s enough,” Reyes expressed. You may not be in control of people’s chain of thoughts, but knowing how to respond to what others say and giving them the power to restrain you is in your hands. Skin-shaming will never be right nor pretty, no matter which angle you choose to look at it. The wounds caused by the harsh grip of this phenomenon’s chains are beyond skin-deep and, in some instances, forever engraved in one’s identity. As one removes the shackles, the pain may linger and the scars may forever stay. Nonetheless, healing will come as you break free from the confinement of your skin and venture off on a quest to uncover the beauty that lies within.

Ilusyon ng manipulasyon Words by Francine Angela Dela Fuente Art by Leica Gwyneth Mendoza
“I (felt) like I was a deceiver and fabricator, which led me (to) doubt my whole argument and rethink what really happened,” bahagi niya.
“[They can receive] a great level of anxiety paired with questioning (of their) surroundings [or having trust issues caused by the trauma of being gaslighted].” Hinuha pa niya na nangyayari na ito noon pa man, “It’s just that people tend to ignore these issues before, unlike today.”
“I find it hard coping up with [gaslighting] because... hindi ako nagtatanim ng galit.”
“
To fight against gaslighting is to have strength and time to evaluate thoughts and dysfunctional thinking.
Bigkas ni Madison Cantimbuhan (HMS24), “People who [gaslight] are the ones who can’t [understand] others, they just (want) na sila lang (ang) laging iniintindi.”

Binigyang-liwanag ni Carungcong ang kadalasang dahilan na nag-uudyok sa akto ng gaslighting, “The results of negative experiences from the past or wrong upbringings when they were still a child are still (living) in their mind.” Ngunit kanyang idiniin, “[T]his shouldn’t be a reason to tolerate [gaslighting].”
“Educating my friends and family about

the idea of gaslighting is the biggest help I can do,” pahayag niya. Mungkahi naman ni Amity para sa mga taong patuloy na nakararanas ng ganitong gawi, “Open up about it and talk back if necessary, especially if your claims are firm enough.”
“To fight against gaslighting is to have strength and time to evaluate thoughts and dysfunctional thinking,” mensahe ni Carungcong sa kahalatan.

When endeavors get vanquished Words by Zhaine Luisse Toledo Art by Franz Maverick Vicedo
As the mind begins to wander, the feeling of bliss and tranquility in the kingdom of dreams travels through. A gigantic grin starts to spread across the face as the heart begins to flutter—“that is where I want to be”, we whisper to ourselves, wishing and believing that one day the soul in the body we own will be in a place of prosperity.
SPADES GAZING OUT THE window with a spread of clouds, we begin to wonder whether we’re going to achieve the glory we’ve been dreaming of. Much like anyone else, we’re compelled to leave our safe haven to reach the place buried beneath the fog, being continually reminded that trials must be fought to reach the kingdom in our dreams. The sword we carry and the body we possess must be reinforced; strategies and tribulations must be planned. However, the thought of doing tiresome tasks makes it nearly impossible to obtain inspiration and take action.
Fondness of comfort. Nowadays, seeking warmth over progression—to the extent where deadlines are being ignored—has become an unvarying and prominent habit among students. According to a study entitled “Impact of procrastination and its contributing factors on Business Administration Students in Surigao Del Sur State University”, procrastination is considerably greater among students than in the general public, with more than 70 percent resorting to procrastination at some point. Each individual has distinct excuses, making it impossible to point out one particular explanation as to why students tend to blissfully disregard their tasks. For Khrice Ibañez (STM26), he’d often procrastinate due to his confidence in the abilities he possesses. “Kahit na nag-poprocrastinate ako, [I can assure na] kaya kong malagyan ng quality ‘yung gawa ko,” he explained. On the other hand, Miren Monsod (HMS11) admitted that she would choose sleep over her assessments. “I usually put off tasks that look like too much work,” she shared. The problem usually arises when people start growing accustomed to comfortable situations. The thought of simply leaving their safe haven can cause a halt from them dabbling into uncertainty. Now, setting aside workload for comfort once in a while probably won’t bring abounding damages. The real problem emerges when the act is done persistently. Eagerness to defer. The adrenaline from the pressure in doing last-minute tasks might be the main culprit in why people make the same mistake in a never-ending manner. Ibañez said, “[Nakakakuha ako ng motivation] kapag nandyan na ‘yung deadline,” which are the good things he gets from procrastination.
Students like him tend to purposefully postpone doing work to gain an immense amount of drive to finish work faster and focus more on the tasks at hand. The thrill may also surge people’s creativity. Monsod shared, “I feel like the pressure and stress I get from procrastination gives me the chance to become more creative.” With the time seemingly ticking at a quicker pace, students tend to notice an efflux in their resourcefulness causing outputs to come out unique and occasionally better than expected. This can bring a great sense of satisfaction as successfully finishing an output in a short amount of time is an absolutely impeccable feeling—and can sometimes be addicting.
“
REGARDLESS OF HOW IMMENSELY DIFFICULT IT IS TO SIT DOWN AND GET STARTED, THE ABILITY TO POWER THROUGH MORE APPEALING AND IMMEDIATE DISTRACTIONS STARTS WITHIN ONE THING: OURSELVES.
The damages that ensue. Despite all the benefits people may get by deliberately impeding their progression, making it a habit will more likely bring nothing but implications. “Sobrang (naipon) ‘yung aking gawain to the point na (stressed) na ako,” Ibañez admitted when asked about the consequences he faced after consciously delaying tasks. “[I remember], kaliwa’t kanan akong [nanghingi] ng extensions sa mga teacher [ko],” he continued. Sooner or later, the work left undone may begin piling up with its deadlines fast approaching and the feeling of remorse in letting the urge to give in to
distraction might start setting in. “There are times that I’ve had to compromise the quality of my work to pass it on time,” Monsod shared. She also confessed that she missed deadlines and had points deducted from her final grade due to her incapability to finish tasks on time.
Conquering debacle. The tendency to put things off can be intense, particularly if there are too many exciting hindrances around us. However, recognizing the feeling of regret when you let the desire to give in to distractions before it happens removes the awful emotions and an incredible amount of stress. “[S]et rewards for each time you complete a task,” Monsod suggested. Most of the time, a break from tedious work is all we need. “My standard is a oneto-one ratio for time worked to time rested. For example, an hour’s worth of tasks will give me an hour’s worth of relaxation,” she elaborated on the routine that helps her stay grounded and productive. While for Ibañez, “[T]ry to set [your] own deadline, or kaya ask someone [else to set it for you].” Having motivating factors such as personal deadlines can definitely help in overcoming the urge to procrastinate, however, this may lead to feelings of intimidation or hopelessness, particularly when students have to finish piles and piles of work. At this point, what an individual can do is to take each item on their list, break them into a series of steps, and dedicate moments in the day to finish each item. Regardless of how immensely difficult it is to sit down and get started, the ability to power through more appealing and immediate distractions starts within one thing: ourselves. ***
“Gawin mo na lahat [ng kailangan gawin at] mahirapan ka na ngayon para pagdating sa dulo, [makahihinga ka na],” Ibañez advised, reminding us that time is in constant motion; when our bodies stand still, time doesn’t follow. Thus, progression must be of utmost importance despite its nature of aggravating one’s stress levels. One day, our wish of being in a place of prosperity will no longer be unreachable, the glory that was solely in the kingdom of dreams will soon be at our possession until we can open-heartedly say, “I am finally where I want to be.”
