SEASONS
Here in South Louisiana, long summers are filled with sunshine and winters are short and mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 50 degrees. Instead of traditional seasons, we mark the passage of time with our food and festivals. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, especially in Cajun Country. After soaking in the holiday spirit at our Cajun & Creole Christmas festivities, get cozy in one of our historic B&Bs or warm up with our signature chicken and sausage gumbo. If your New Year’s resolution is to eat healthier and get fit, our fresh Gulf seafood is low in fat and high in protein. And burning calories has never been more fun than paddling our beautiful bayous or zydeco dancing at one of our local music venues.
· 2019 ·
Our waistlines barely get a break when King Cake comes out January 6, the day the three kings reached baby Jesus. This tasty pastry marks the start of our official Mardi Gras season, which runs from the Epiphany to Fat Tuesday with parades and revelry. If you’re giving up meat for Lent along with many of our Catholic residents, then it’s the perfect time for a po’boy stuffed with fried shrimp and oysters.
Early spring ushers in crawfish season. You’ll find everything from crawfish étouffée to crawfish pizza and sushi on menus around town, but if you’re a purist, you can purchase crawfish by the pound at one of our drive-thru shacks. In April we pay homage to our French heritage at Festival International de Louisiane, the country’s largest international music festival. Summer starts early and sticks around for a while. We keep our cool with delicious frozen snoballs or—for the grown-ups—local craft beer and frozen daiquiris, served straight from the drive-thru window. We seek shelter from afternoon showers at enriching indoor attractions or popular local restaurants, which offer great dining deals during EatLafayette. Fall is a great time to attend our weekly farmers market and sample boudin, made with pork sausage, rice, and seasonings. At October’s Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, we put the spotlight on our local culture with three days of authentic music, dancing, art and—you guessed it—amazing food. No matter what season you find yourself in Lafayette, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your craving for Cajun food, culture, history, and adventure.

EX P ERIENCE THE BEST OF
Acadiana B
Rock’n’ Bowl The popular Louisiana expression laissez les bons temps rouler means let the good times roll. And that’s exactly the spirit you’ll find at Rock ’n’ Bowl in downtown Lafayette, a city known for its great food and music. Rock ’n’ Bowl got its start in New Orleans 30 years ago, and its fun and quirky combination of authentic Louisiana music inside a bowling alley has garnered national attention from CNN, USA Today, National Geographic and The Today Show—just to name a few. The legendary landmark opened its second location in Lafayette last year, and it’s already the hottest entertainment venue in Acadiana. When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Rock ’n’ Bowl founder, John Blancher, and his family took shelter in Lafayette, 130 miles west of their home.
“We fell in love with the place and people that welcomed us when we were most vulnerable after Katrina,” says John. The Blanchers vowed then to open a Lafayette franchise of Rock ’n’ Bowl and have been waiting for the perfect opportunity ever since. In 2016, the ideal location came available on downtown’s historic Jefferson Street, that’s home to a variety of bars, restaurants, shops and museums all within walking distance. John’s son, Johnny, moved his family of five to Lafayette to run the business and begin renovating two floors of an old bank building. Johnny opened the impressive 38,000 square-foot venue in 2018 with a bowling alley, full-service bar, stage with dance floor, fine dining restaurant and event space all under one roof. In keeping with Acadiana’s strong Catholic faith, the Blanchers even made room for a small chapel when you walk in the main door, so you can pray before you play.
“We’re a unique one-stop dine and rock for visitors who want to experience the best of Louisiana and Acadiana culture,” says Johnny. “You can sit down and enjoy a great meal, then walk a couple of steps and hear authentic music. We’re not pretentious— in fact, we like to say we’re the most fun you’ll ever have on a white tablecloth.” 22

The venue’s 16 lanes of bowling—complete with big screens and special effects—play second fiddle to the entertainment that’s brought in three to four nights a week to the main stage.
“We offer all types of shows at different times of day, so you can bring your family or come out late-night with friends,” says Larry Hamburger, director of marketing. “We run the gamut from rock ’n’ roll and cover bands to zydeco.” Rock ’n’ Bowl de Lafayette has brought in big names like Cowboy Mouth, award-winning artists like Samantha Fish and Marc Broussard, as well as favorite local regulars like Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie. Since the early ‘90s in New Orleans, Rock ’n’ Bowl has given the spotlight to zydeco music, a trademark of South Louisiana featuring an accordion and a washboard with an upbeat tempo perfect for dancing. And all over Acadiana, there’s a huge following of couples young and old ready to hit the dance floor. Visitors and locals alike can take zydeco dance lessons at Rock ’n’ Bowl de Lafayette every Wednesday at 6 p.m., then show off their Cajun two-step in time with the zydeco band at 7 p.m.
Sponsored by
After bowling and dancing, patrons can enjoy a sit-down meal at The Sainte Marie, the Rock ’n’ Bowl’s upscale, onsite restaurant serving Creole and Cajun dishes with the venue’s own special twist. Favorite renditions of traditional favorites include the Fried Green Tomato Shrimp Remoulade, Beaux Thai Duck with vermicelli noodles and the Shrimp and Grits with local Gulf shrimp and French bread. Wash it all down with a Louisiana craft beer or a hand-crafted cocktail but be sure to save room for dessert. The Blanchers’ Fried Bread Pudding PoBoy was named the king of all po’boys at the Oak Street Po’Boy Festival in New Orleans—the ultimate authority in naming Louisiana’s best signature sandwich. Rock ’n’ Bowl de Lafayette is a lively location for a special event or a tour group, with private suites overlooking the stage to luxurious receptions for 300 in the Grand Ballroom. Private dance lessons can also be arranged, and a variety of bar games are offered in the upstairs loft to keep the party going.
“We’ve hosted everything from high school reunions and homecoming events to kids’ birthday parties,” says Hamburger. “Whatever your group’s needs, we can provide the ultimate Louisiana experience.”
Rock ’n’ Bowl de Lafayette is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until late at

Plate Lunch Paradise Though most visitors to Lafayette might sooner associate the area with our more famed Cajun and Creole culinary fare (jambalaya, crawfish, and gumbo), it is the rice and gravy-centric plate lunch that fuels the people of Louisiana’s Acadiana region. Consisting of meat, a gravy-covered starch, a pair of vegetable sides, and a simple piece of bread — and often all served on a single plate — the plate lunch emphasizes speed, affordability, and caloric heft. A close cousin to the meat-and-three restaurants found throughout the South, the history of Lafayette, LA’s plate lunch houses is rooted in the marriage of rustic, homestyle cooking with the convenience offered by the buffet line. In the late nineteenth century, cafeteriastyle lunchrooms appeared throughout America, introducing patrons to self-service, the steaming lunch counter, and the ubiquitous plastic tray.
Tra il
In South Louisiana, rural meat markets were likely the first to sling portable plate lunches to a hungry working-class crowd. Instead of disposing of their scraps and other unsold cuts, butchers smothered these meats in a rich, roux-based gravy for tomorrow’s lunch. With the addition of rice — a regional commodity and staple of local tables — and a stewed vegetable or two, the plate lunch was born.

Lafayette’s Live Oaks In South Louisiana, live oaks are history, heritage, and heirlooms all rolled into one. They offered shade and protection for the first settlers’ homes along Louisiana’s bayous and rivers. On the old land maps, they marked property lines. Duels were fought, and honor won or lost under their arched limbs. People picnic under them, get married under them, dance the two-step under them, and finally, when the music ends, are laid to rest near their roots. In 1934, Dr. Edwin Lewis Stephens, first president of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) proposed the creation of an organization made up entirely of the largest and oldest live oak trees in Louisiana. His vision was that the organization’s membership would include trees whose size and age made them significant cultural and natural resources, worth identifying and preserving for future generations to enjoy. Beginning with just 43 inductee oaks in 1934, the Live Oak Society’s roster of member oaks now counts more than 8,300 registered trees across 14 southeastern U.S. states. In the Lafayette area, there were 12 oaks among the original 43 charter members. Today, more than a thousand oaks in the Lafayette area are listed on the society’s registry.

Cajun Boudin Trail To best understand a people and place look to the foods they eat on the run, those iconic handheld meals — quick, filling, portable, tasty. In Lafayette and the surrounding towns and parishes of Acadiana that fast food is boudin. Simply and affectionately referred to as “links,” boudin is a roughly half-pound, half-foot length of sausage available for purchase in most every local meat market, grocery store, and gas station. A perfect way to explore the region is to try one boudin after another, link after steaming hot link, to form a chain that connects, or literally links, the Cajun prairie towns to the Creole bayou communities. But boudin is not limited to the traditional link. There’s a variety of boudins and boudin-derived delights, including smoked boudin; seafood boudin, a mainstay during the Lenten season; boudin-stuffed bread called pistolettes; and the ever-popular breaded and deep-fried boudin balls. More recently, freethinking boudinnières have filled egg rolls, king cakes, and kolaches (filled pastries common to the region). One meat market has recently marketed an “ultra-low-carb boudin” that substitutes minced cauliflower for rice.
Tra il
There’s a boudin for every mood and palate (and maybe for each day of the year!). So grab a link, and don’t forget a bag of cracklins to go!

Dancehalls of Cajun Country Dancehalls, or les salles de danse, became popular in South Louisiana around the time of the Civil War. Equal parts bar, performance hall, and community center, the traditional dancehall provided a space for much-needed recreation. In many ways, they resembled house dances or bal de maison: paid admission, food, and drinks for sale, entire families welcome, largely insular community affairs. Unlike house dances, dancehalls were separate structures open on a regular basis for entertainment to anyone who could pay to enter. The majority of local dancehalls of recent memory feature Cajun and Zydeco music. Historically establishments that represented many more genres of music - Blues, big band, string band, jazz, country and western, rhythm and blues, swamp pop, and rock and roll - were popular all over the state. Forty-six of Louisiana’s sixty-four parishes featured dancehalls at one time or another. These halls were established in a variety of settings as well–city centers, rural locations, at water’s edge, and sometimes on the water, the outskirts of town, and neighborhoods. The majority of these legendary institutions have closed their doors, but the few that remain open are now a frequent stop for tourists from all over the world.

Fun Down to a Science Located in the heart of downtown, the Lafayette Science Museum is a playful portal into a universe of discovery. From teeny-tiny insects to the vast wonders of space, the exhibits are designed to enlighten curious minds of all ages. EXHIBITS Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the museum’s exhibits and special events continue to evolve – an effort to showcase the latest scientific innovations and reflect Acadiana’s ever-changing science community. “Because of Lafayette’s unique geography, major university, and expanding technology and energy industries, there is certainly a thriving scientific community here,” says Exhibits Curator Blake Lagneaux. “At the museum, we strive to represent real-life sciences and encourage STEM careers in ways that are tangible and accessible.” The University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of Geosciences currently inhabits lab space at the museum, where a team of paleontologists, students, and volunteers are excavating a prehistoric, giraffe-like camel called Megatylopus. The team recently uncovered the specimen from a site in Oregon and brought back large casts for further excavation. Visitors to the museum can watch as fossils of the 5-million-year-old camel emerge from the casts. VIRTUAL REALITY The museum’s Virtual Reality Laboratory is extremely popular for adults and older children. Players can choose from eight immersive 3D experiences that explore a range of subjects from physics to art. “In one game, you can shoot a bow and arrow to defend a castle and in another one, you stand on a shipwreck in the ocean and huge whale swims really close by,” says Sam Henderson, a local sixth grader. “It’s awesome!” COLLECTIONS & INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS Upstairs, you’ll discover the museum’s impressive meteorite collection. Take a break in the Dino Lounge with two dynamic dino skeletons, children’s books and a SelfieSaurus, then try your hand at operating a robotic arm – just like astronauts on the Space Shuttle. The Crawl Space puts the spotlight on insects, where patrons can bug out on terrariums crawling with beetles, centipedes, millipedes, arachnids and even hissing cockroaches!
· 2019 ·
PLANETARIUM The shining star of the museum is the Planetarium, the highest-resolution in Louisiana, with a wide variety of shows for all ages. Young readers who love the Magic Tree House book series are instant fans of “The Magic Tree House: Space Mission,” where Jack and Annie go on a fun-filled journey to discover the secrets of the universe. Adults and children alike love “Firefall,” which explores the phenomenon of meteors, and “Moons: Worlds of Mystery,” a show that explores the most spectacular satellites of the solar system. Perhaps the most popular program is “The Sky Tonight,” which introduces the evening’s constellations, brightest stars and closest planets with a Q&A session by the planetarium’s expert staff. SPECIAL EVENTS Lafayette Science Museum often participates in special events downtown, like Downtown Alive, held each spring and fall, as well as ArtWalk on the second Saturday of each month. The Lafayette Science Museum hosts Bach Lunch at Parc Sans Souci on select Fridays in the spring and fall. The public can purchase a catered box lunch for $6 and enjoy a free outdoor concert. “We’re located right next to some of Lafayette’s best restaurants and entertainment, so it’s easy for visitors to come and park once, then spend a day exploring all there is to do downtown,” says Lagneaux. The museum continues to plan exciting events, like Documentary Date Nights, an annual Insect Day, and even a wedding ceremony between two Burmese pythons for Valentine’s Day. Visitors are encouraged to check the museum’s calendar on their website (LafayetteScienceMuseum.org) and Facebook page (@LafayetteScienceMuseum) for special events and planetarium schedules. GIFT SHOP Before leaving the museum, guests should stop by the Discover Store for science-centered games, toys and activities. Grab some astronaut ice cream or a hatchable dinosaur egg for the kids or take a puzzle back to your office to challenge even your most determined co-worker.

Ryan Trahan Jacques Rodrigue
George Rodrigue Legacy Lives on Through Artwork and Eateries Acadiana native George Rodrigue rose to international fame with his iconic Blue Dog paintings. His pop art has been featured in advertising campaigns by Absolut Vodka and Xerox, three U.S. presidents have commissioned his work, and his original pieces sell for more than $60,000. Rodrigue passed away in 2013, but thanks to his enduring creativity and passionate pioneering, Louisiana’s local lore and landscapes are forever preserved. Inspired by a cross breed of the Rodrigue family dog, Tiffany, and Louisiana’s legendary werewolf, the loup-garou, Rodrigue created his first Blue Dog in 1984. With background scenes ranging from Louisiana’s raised cemeteries, moss-draped oaks and cypress swamps to abstract swaths of color, Blue Dog remains stoically in the forefront of hundreds of paintings. Despite it being his most well-known work, Rodrigue’s storied art career began long before his first Blue Dog. In third grade while bedridden with polio, he painted scenes of the South Louisiana landscape outside his window. By the time he was 27, Rodrigue painted one of his greatest masterpieces, “The Aioli Dinner,” which was based on the old Creole society parties—think Manet in Cajun Country—that were hosted in the late 1800s. Rodrigue dedicated his life’s work to capturing the rich flavors and traditions of Cajun culture—something no other artist had done before, and a decision that led him to become Louisiana’s most famous artist. “He loved his culture and thought it deserved to be part of the American conversation—because only in America could a Cajun culture exist,” says Jacques Rodrigue, who runs his father’s restaurants and galleries today. Art enthusiasts flock to Rodrigue’s studios in New Orleans and Carmel, California, but perhaps the most special place to visit is the gallery in Lafayette. Here, admirers can see original works, shop for certified prints and hear old stories told by Rodrigue’s childhood friend Dickie Hebert, who helps run the gallery.
· 2019 ·
Around the corner at the nearly 20-year-old classic Cajun staple, the Blue Dog Cafe, Rodrigue’s colorful prints adorn the walls, giving guests the opportunity to witness first-hand the impact Cajun culinary traditions had on his work. Now, nearly two decades after opening, Rodrigue’s family is reinvigorating the restaurant, elevating the dining experience and continuing to create a showplace for authentic Cajun art, food and music.
“Our restaurants in Lafayette and Lake Charles serve as a cultural hub for the region,” says Jacques. “It’s a place where you can experience authentic Cajun cuisine while also learning about our culture through the lens of George Rodrigue’s artwork.” Earlier this year, Blue Dog Cafe brought in new executive chef Ryan Trahan, who’s not only the reigning King of Louisiana Seafood and American Seafood, but has also been named “Chef to Watch” by Louisiana Cookin’ magazine. Trahan specializes in modernized Cajun cuisine and has developed several new menu items, including Pecan Smoked Catfish, Blue Crab Spaghetti, BBQ Shrimp and Grits and Pan Seared Crawfish Cake. “Somewhere down the road Cajun cuisine became synonymous with fried food, spicy seasonings and heavy sauces, but for the early Acadians in South Louisiana, it was about sourcing fresh ingredients available to them and creatively giving them flavor,” says Trahan. “We want visitors to experience true Cajun specialties—from fried pork cracklin’, gumbo and boudin to healthy Gulf fish and locally farmed vegetables.” As a nod to Rodrigue’s bold style, the restaurant’s menu features several out-of-the-box items, including the CastIron Heirloom Cornbread, which is made with blue corn and arrives at the table—you guessed it—blue. The cocktail menu includes original libations like the Blue Dog Margarita, the Loup Garou and Hurricane on the Bayou, as well as classics like the Sazerac. Just as art and food are imperative to Cajun culture, so is music. Blue Dog Cafe brings in regionally renowned musicians every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night as well as for Sunday brunch. “Our staff is well-versed in Rodrigue’s paintings as well as Cajun culture, so they can talk to our guests about the story behind what they see on the menu and on the wall,” says Jacques. “We want to provide more than just a good meal, but a colorful lesson in history and art.”
