Lafayette and the Acadiana region is a year-round destination, with long summers followed by pleasant winters in the mid-60s. Here in Cajun Country, we define our seasons by festivals, food, and time-honored traditions. Come during the holidays, and the whole town sparkles. During our Cajun & Creole Christmas, Lafayette transforms into a winter wonderland with light shows, parades, a tour of homes, and special performances. Did you resolve to try something new this year? Then Cajun Country is the place for you! Only in Lafayette can you attend a rodeo, film festival, concert series, and a Mardi Gras parade! On colder days, warm up with a plate lunch of Cajun comfort foods, and treat your palate to a slice of king cake. If peace and quiet is more your speed, our fairytale gardens, cozy inns, and fine dining restaurants are ideal for a romantic getaway. Crawfish are at their peak in early spring. Roll up your sleeves and pick your own or eat it with a fork in an etouffee at one of our many restaurants or the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. No trip is complete without boudin and po’boys. Be sure to stop at one of the legendary spots on our Cajun Boudin Trail and attend the annual Po’Boy Festival. Burn off some calories at a lively dance hall, or participate in the Vermilion Voyage, a three-day, 50-mile,

overnight paddling excursion. Spring is also an ideal time to spend a day in Downtown Lafayette, where you’ll find attractions, restaurants, and nightlife. Every April, Downtown hosts Festival International, bringing more than 500 musicians from 15 countries to the stage. Summer starts early and sticks around a while. Stay cool with delicious frozen snoballs and local craft beer. Give the kids a summer history lesson at Vermilionville, a historic village that hosts Creole and Acadian culture days, and admire some of our incredible architecture and public art around town. Plan your meals around EatLafayette, where the top restaurants around town offer incredible deals. On your way out of town, shop our local makers for a tasty or artistic souvenir. On your drive home, be sure to listen to some great Zydeco and Swamp Pop music with our Lafayette Weekly playlist on Spotify! Fall is especially beautiful for spending time outdoors, with nature trails and cypress bayous waiting to be explored. Fall is also filled with events and festivals celebrating everything from blackpot cooking to local haunts, vintage hotrods, and modern films. The season’s biggest event is Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, where our local culture shines with three days of authentic music, dancing, art, and food.

LOCAL FLAVOR Spice things up with a day trip to Avery Island, home of the world-famous TABASCO® sauce

South Louisiana boasts one of the most vibrant cuisines in North America today. —Chef Jeremy Conner

My family has been producing and selling TABASCO® sauce for more than 150 years, maintaining a generations-old tradition and preserving a way of life that extends well beyond our family and far off Avery Island. —Christian Brown II, Agriculture Project Specialist and sixth-generation McIlhenny family member.

Fiery Facts! TABASCO® repurposes discarded materials. Mash is sold as a seasoning for seafood boils, and wood barrels are made into wood chips for grilling TABASCO® is made from just three ingredients: salt, vinegar, and peppers Following company tradition, all peppers are picked by hand Archeologists have determined that Native Americans lived on Avery Island as far back as 2,500 B.C. TABASCO® is an official supplier to the British Royal Household TABASCO® Sauce is shipped to 185 countries.

Driving south past low-lying sugarcane fields, you’ll suddenly see something out of the ordinary in South Louisiana—a hill rising 163 feet above sea level. That’s the salt dome on which Avery Island was built and the highest point on the Gulf Coast. After the banking industry of New Orleans crashed in the 19th century, Edmund McIlhenny chose this majestic spot for his new business venture. He planted his first pepper crop in 1868, and using salt from the mine with a little vinegar, he created the recipe for TABASCO® sauce that’s still used today. His family still runs the business on Avery Island, making world-famous TABASCO® sauce for 185 countries. “We are extremely proud of our Louisiana heritage and to be one of our state’s best-known and best-loved exports,” says Christian Brown II, Agriculture Project Specialist and a sixthgeneration McIlhenny family member. “My family has been producing and selling TABASCO® sauce for more than 150 years, maintaining a generations-old tradition and preserving a way of life that extends well beyond our family and far off Avery Island.” Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Avery Island is open nearly every day of the year as well as hosts special events, like its October Fall Festival and annual Easter Egg Hunt. Start your visit at Jungle Gardens, a 170-acre semi-tropical garden and bird sanctuary created by McIlhenny. Enchanting moss-draped oaks immediately call you into their canopy from the gravel road you enter on, inviting you to enter this peaceful place. Request an expert-led guided tour in advance or take the self-led cell phone tour and drive through the garden’s 15 stops. You’ll also find several spots to pull off and park for those wishing to explore the grounds on foot. You might sneak up on a deer grazing in the open meadows or spot an alligator sunning on the banks of Bayou Petite Anse.

Find your zen by walking along a serene pond and over Monet-style bridges to McIlhenny’s 900-year-old Buddha statue, the awe-inspiring centerpiece for the Asian garden. Bird City is a 35-acre private sanctuary, which Theodore Roosevelt once called the most noteworthy reserve in the country. From the observation tower, you can admire an array of birds like snowy egrets, herons, anhinga, white ibis, roseate spoonbills, blue-winged teal, ducks, and other migratory birds. Be sure to explore the Sunken Gardens, where you’ll find McIlhenny’s innovative drainage system. Another can’t miss stop is the quiet garden where you’ll discover an entrance into his old camellia and azalea nursery. After exploring the gardens, head over to 1868!® Restaurant for an authentic Cajun lunch on the rustic porch. Treat yourself to a few Cajun specialties prepared by Chef Jeremy Conner, like boudin, chicken and sausage gumbo or crawfish etouffee. You’ll savor big, bold, and delicious flavors in every bite, accented by TABASCO® sauce, of course! “The Cajuns and other peoples displaced to South Louisiana arrived to find limited resources and built strong community bonds to survive,” says Chef Conner. “This had the effect of enriching their cultures in all aspects, including art, music—and most of all—food. As a result, South Louisiana boasts one of the most vibrant cuisines in North America today.” For the ultimate foodie, don’t miss Chef Conner’s TABASCO® Cooking Demo. He’ll have you cooking like a Cajun in no time with two appetizers, a main course, and dessert you’ll get to enjoy for yourself. After lunch, take the TABASCO® Factory Tour. You’ll first walk through the history of the company, then to the pepper greenhouse, through the barreling process, and onto the factory floor for blending and bottling. Before hitting the highway, treat your tastebuds to a few favorites at the TABASCO Country Store®—you’ve gotta try the TABASCO® soda and ice cream! Then, pick up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home.

Vermilionville

300 Fisher Rd. | (337) 233-4077 | Vermilionville.org This historic riverfront village, right across from the airport, is not only convenient, but it also has a compelling story to tell with original buildings dating back to the 1700 and 1800s. Reminiscent of an old agricultural building, the open performance center with a courtyard can accommodate up to 350. A charming wooden chapel and a conference room are also available. The onsite restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, can accommodate up to 75 guests with incredible Cajun cuisine, downhome comfort foods, and even a custom crawfish boil or barbecue for your group. Rock’n’Bowl de Lafayette

In April of 2019 ACFEA Tours had a student group in town that was set to do a public performance as part of their tour. The performance was set to take place outside, but due to the weather the performance was cancelled. With some quick thinking we were able to find another concert series for them to play for that same day. The students were able to showcase their talent and locals got to enjoy some added entertainment for the evening.

Sending a HUGE thank you to Kaylie for your help with Head Royce School's choir and jazz band. You went above and beyond, and we are so thankful that you worked so hard and that it all worked out. The kids had a great time performing at St. Julien Jams, and that's what it's all about. – Christie Starrett - ACFEA Tour Consultants, Inc.

905 Jefferson St. | (337) 534-8880 | RocknBowl.com In this lively location downtown, your group can work hard and play hard. After meeting in the Grand Ballroom, your staff can bond with bowling, dance lessons, live music, pub games, and more! Don’t serve the same-old banquet-style chicken - instead offer your group a fresh new menu including local craft beer, handcrafted cocktails, and Louisiana specialties.

The Hilliard University Art Museum

In April of 2019, Lafayette hosted a Regional Harley Owners Rally, sponsored by Harley Davidson in Milwaukee. With almost 2,000 riders in attendance the event kicked off with a party at Cajun Harley Davidson and featured daily rides around Acadiana through the weekend. The HOGS were highlighted in a special parade for the start of Downtown Alive! on Friday and finished with another closing party at Cajun Harley Davidson.

Along with all the local businesses welcoming us with open arms, planning our Harley Owners Group Rally was made easy with the assistance of everyone at Lafayette Travel. Our attendees traveled from 34 states and 2 Canadian provinces and enjoyed our unique Cajun culture and food. Although we have a great many guided and self-guided rides, our most popular group ride turned out to be The Boudin Run around Lafayette, LA. – Gene Faulk, HOGS

In April of 2019, we hosted William Mondello of Brand USA France for a FAM tour led by Mike Prejean with the Louisiana Office of Tourism. Representatives from USA Travel, TUI France, Sensations du Monde, Visiteursa, Les Maisons du Voyage and American Airlines France got to experience attractions like Vermilionville, Rock’n’Bowl, Randol’s, and a Swamp Tour before heading out.

A huge thank you for the amazing time we had in Lafayette, LA! Great dance, not so great bowling (for me), and what a ride in the swamp! The Tour Operators had so much fun and will remember this forever and I will make sure they do! Take care guys! – William Mondello, Brand USA France

Sugar Bert Boxing hosted its first National Qualifier October 18-20 at the Youngsville Sports Complex in Lafayette Parish. The event was a big success attracting boxers from all around the country! This event hosted over 450 participants including boxers, coaches and officials with over 21 states represented.

This amateur boxing tournament has set the tone in Lafayette/Youngsville and the sky is the limit as to how big next year's event will be. – Bert Wells, CEO Sugar Bert Boxing

Let the Good Times Roll at Rock’n’Bowl de Lafayette There’s no place quite like Rock’n’Bowl, and that’s exactly what visitors and locals love about it. Since opening in Lafayette just two years ago, it’s already become a local landmark and the heart of downtown’s dining and entertainment district.

Sponsored by

John Blancher first opened Rock’n’Bowl in New Orleans 30 years ago. Its fun and quirky combination of authentic Louisiana music inside a bowling alley has garnered national attention from CNN, USA Today, National Geographic, and The Today Show—just to name a few. In 2016, the Blanchers decided to open its first franchise outside of New Orleans in Lafayette. The family transformed an old bank building on Jefferson Street into the impressive 38,000 square foot venue it is today. John’s son, Johnny, runs the local business here. “We’re a unique one-stop dine and rock for visitors who want to experience the best of Louisiana and Acadiana culture,” says Johnny. “You can sit down and enjoy a great meal, then walk a couple of steps and hear authentic music.”

While the venue boasts 16 lanes of bowling, a variety of games, and a full-service restaurant, Rock’n’Bowl’s main attraction is music. Live music is brought in Thursday through Sunday to the main stage, and locals and visitors flock to the dance floor. “We offer all types of shows at different times of the day so you can bring your family or come out late-night with friends,” says Larry Hamburger, Rock’n’Bowl’s director of marketing. “We run the gamut from rock’n’roll and cover bands to Louisiana’s famous zydeco.” Rock’n’Bowl de Lafayette has brought in big names like Cowboy Mouth, award-winning artists with Louisiana ties like Tab Benoit and Marc Broussard, as well as favorite local regulars like Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie. Visitors and locals alike can line dance every Wednesday at 6 p.m. with Krewe des Bon Temps, followed by karaoke. Continuing Thursday is live country music beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights are reserved for big-name bands and music of all genres. Sundays are for zydeco with music from 5–8 p.m. VIP options are available for larger shows. They include an open bar, special food, and private upstairs viewing areas overlooking the main stage. Hamburger says children are always invited to accompany their parents to shows, with no cover for those 11 and under. After bowling and dancing, patrons can enjoy a meal, and specialty drinks at the onsite restaurant and bar recently revamped to focus more on entertainment. “We’ve added more games, a drop-down screen, and lounging areas for just hanging out and watching the game,” says Hamburger. “We wanted to create

a more casual, family-friendly space for guests to bowl, listen to music, have a bite to eat, play games, and just have a good time.” Guests can play classic games like Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Golden Tee. Plus, there’s an eightman foosball table, giant Jenga and Connect Four, and a ping-pong table. One of the favorites is “fowling,” a game that combines football, cornhole, horseshoes, and bowling. With most items priced between $7-$12, the menu includes a range of fresh salads, meatballs, burgers, appetizers, and Rock’n’Bowl’s awardwinning fried bread pudding po’boy. Wash it all down with a classic Louisiana cocktail, like a Sazerac or French 75, local craft beer, or a glass of wine. The restaurant also showcases a creative martini menu, and Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., you can even enjoy $1 martinis with the purchase of food. Rock’n’Bowl de Lafayette is a lively location for team building, business meetings, birthday parties, receptions, a tour group, or other special events. The entire building can hold up to 1,000 guests, including receptions for 300 in the Grand Ballroom, sit-down dinners, or private events in the upstairs bar. Group dance lessons can also be arranged, and a variety of bar games are offered in the upstairs loft to keep the party going. You can even reserve an intimate meal for 14 in the old bank vault, preserved during the renovation. “We’ve hosted everything from high school reunions and fundraisers to kids’ birthday parties,” says Hamburger. “Whatever your group’s needs, we can provide the ultimate Louisiana experience.”

Rock’n’Bowl de Lafayette is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until late at 905 Jefferson St. For more information and to view the live music schedule and menu, visit

Trip Ideas

Rôder (pronounced row-day) in Cajun French means to roam, or run the roads and Lafayette is the perfect destination to pile the family in the car and rôder. Whether you’re coming for the day or planning an extended vacation or staycation with the family, the Happiest City in America has plenty of family friendly things to do. From foodie families, history and cultural buffs, and geocachers to the more adventurous outdoor families, Lafayette has the perfect experience waiting for you. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s rôder!

"Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" Dr. Seuss certainly valued the importance of play, travel, and new experiences for children. Louisiana's Cajun Country is one of those Great Places, filled with enriching kid-friendly itineraries that everyone in the family can enjoy together. The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch named Lafayette the "Happiest City in America." You'll feel the locals' joie de vivre as you're warmly welcomed into a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions throughout Acadiana. Lafayette is home to one of the most colorful cultures in the country, with a unique history, lively zydeco music, enticing food, and enchanting swamps. Spend a day in historic downtown Lafayette, home to hands-on museums, fabulous local restaurants, and a music venue that boasts a bowling alley and arcade games. Get outside and explore South Louisiana's bayous, swamps, and palmetto forests, whether hiking, paddling, or feeling the wind in your hair on an airboat. You can also enjoy authentic live music from a variety of indoor and outdoor venues, where everyone in the family can clap along and try out the dance floor. Today is your day for the perfect family trip to Lafayette!

Things to do Locals and visitors in Lafayette's Cajun Country benefit from the best of both worlds: small-town charm and convenience paired with plenty of fun-filled activities. Lafayette affords young minds with a wealth of opportunities for learning in every subject. Because of the area's rich culture, it's one of the best destinations for exposing children to new food and music, tasting different flavors, and hearing fresh sounds from washboards and accordions. Science and history lessons abound around Acadiana. Families can spend a morning discovering interactive exhibits at Lafayette Science Museum and Planetarium. Nearby, Vermilionville Historic Village is an open-air classroom with costumed guides that transport you back in time. Just down the road, expert guides lead tours of the Atchafalaya, the largest swamp in the United States, where they share fascinating stories while pointing out wildlife. When it's time to rest the mind, wonderful parks encourage free play, whether you're looking for a swing set, sports courts, or an open field to spread a blanket and throw the ball. And in the hot summer months, everyone can chill out at one of the area's splash pads. Come jump right in and discover all there is to do!

Food

Virginia Woolf once said, "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." Cajun Country is one of the best places in the world for dining well, with incredible, authentic dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. A trip to Louisiana's Cajun Country is a treat for the tastebuds. Early settlers to Acadiana lived off the land, using every resource available to them. Necessity is the mother of invention, and hungry Cajuns created jambalaya, gumbo, and ĂŠtouffĂŠe from pork, crawfish, rice, and chicken. Today, food remains an essential ingredient in Cajun culture. Dining is a communal affair in Lafayette, and children are always invited to the table. Families cook big pots of gumbo in fall and pick crawfish around the table each winter and spring. Lafayette's close vicinity to the Gulf means restaurants offer the freshest shrimp, crab, and fish. Local sugar cane is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Delicious sno-cones and daiquiris made with cane sugar provide a sweet reprieve during the hot summer months. King cakes rule during Mardi Gras season, and old-fashioned ice cream from Borden's remains an 80-year tradition. Bon Appetit!

Festivals

Cajuns are so proud of their heritage that they're always celebrating something! Festivals are as diverse as the city itself, with a focus on everything from azaleas to zydeco. There are festivals for sugarcane, crawfish, boudin, and beer, as well as special events highlighting songwriters, films, music, and art. Festivals celebrate the old and the modern—you can discover the old-fashioned Blackpot Festival, Bayou Round Up's vintage cars, or the latest characters from Comic-Con. Each year begins with the Epiphany when king cakes usher in the Mardi Gras season. Acadiana plays host to more than a dozen family-friendly parades, ranging from dog parades and rural revelers on horseback to costumed krewes throwing beads and loot from fantastical floats. In April, Festival International de Louisiane attracts the best Francophile musicians, performers, and artists from all over the world to downtown Lafayette. In August, football season kicks off at Cajun Field where visitors and fans are invited to cheer on the Ragin Cajuns and celebrate unique tailgating traditions. Festivals Acadiens et CrÊoles fills Girard Park just as the weather starts to cool in October. Expect to hear GRAMMY-winning artists and local music legends as well as exploring favorite local restaurant vendors and high-end arts and crafts. No matter the event, visitors are always welcome to the party!

THE ORIGINAL CAJUN COUNTRY

St. Martin Parish embodies the spirit of Acadiana with great food, lively dance halls, local shops, and the largest swamp in the United States.

History Cajun roots were planted in St. Martin Parish in the mid-1700s by thousands of French Catholics, exiled from Acadia, Canada by the Anglican British Crown. The sympathetic and Catholic King of Spain gave the refugees permission to settle in the Spanish territory of South Louisiana. The most famous of the Acadian exiles is Evangeline, immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem. On the long journey from Canada, Evangeline was separated from her love, Gabriel. She searched her entire life for him in the bayous of Louisiana. Local legend has it that they finally reunited under an oak tree on the Bayou Teche before he died in her arms. Today, visitors can take the pilgrimage to St. Martinville and visit the iconic Evangeline Oak and nearby St. Martin de Tours Church, where her statue rests on the historic grounds. Visitors are also invited to attend mass inside the church, with original records dating back to the 1750s. Nearby, St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center tells the stories and struggles of the early Acadians as well as the arrival of African slaves and the development of the free people of color.

Winter Recipe Chicken & Shrimp Okra Gumbo

Gumbo Ingredients: ½ C. Vegetable Oil 3 Lbs. Fresh Okra, Chopped 6 C. Water or Shrimp Stock 3 Tbsp. Roux 1 Onion, Chopped 1 Red Bell Pepper, Chopped 1 Green Bell Pepper, Chopped 1 Celery Stalk, Chopped 2 Lbs. Chicken Breast, Chopped ½ Box Savoy’s Sausage 3 Lbs. Shrimp Peeled, Cleaned & Deveined 1 Small Bag Powdered Shrimp Salt & Pepper to Taste Roux Ingredients: 1 C. Flour 1 C. Vegetable Oil

For the Okra: Pre-heat oven to 350˚ in preparation for smothering okra. Place ¼ cup of vegetable oil in medium sized pot over medium heat. Once oil is heated add okra to the pan and stir as to cover the okra with the oil. Sauté for three to five minutes, stirring consistently before placing in the pre-heated oven. Stir okra every 15 -20 minutes for two hours. In large pot start water or shrimp stock on a low boil. For the Roux: Mix equal parts flour and vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet continuously stirring on medium heat until you reach the desired color of roux. Depending on your preference of darkness the roux will take anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour. Once you have reached the color of roux you desire turn off heat. Continue to stir until the skillet cools. Once the skillet has cooled set aside for later. Store any leftovers in a mason jar. For the Gumbo: Add 3 tbsp of roux to the low boiling water one spoonful at a time until dissolved. Cook for 20 minutes. Add onion, bell peppers and celery to gumbo stock. Cook for another 20 minutes. Season chicken with salt and pepper to taste. Use remaining ¼ cup of oil to pan fry chicken on all sides until golden brown. Add pan fried chicken to gumbo stock. Cut Savoy’s sausage into ¼ inch medallions and add to gumbo stock. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add oven smothered okra, shrimp and powdered shrimp to gumbo stock. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Season gumbo with salt and pepper to taste and serve over rice. Yields 8 servings.

Spring Recipe Mini Crawfish Pies

Crawfish Filling Ingredients: 1 Stick Butter 1 Chopped Large Yellow Onion ½ Chopped Green Bell Pepper 1 Chopped Rib of Celery 1 Lb. Peeled Crawfish Tails 1 Tbl. All-Purpose Flour Dissolved in ½ C. Water Salt Red Cayenne Pepper Granulated Garlic ¼ C. Chopped Green Onions 2 Tbl. Chopped Fresh Parsley Leaves Pie Dough Ingredients: 1 8 Oz. Package of Regular Cream Cheese at Room Temperature 2 Sticks of Butter at Room Temperature 3 C. All-Purpose Flour plus 1 C. for Dusting

· 2020 ·

For the Crawfish Filling: To make the crawfish filling, melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onions, green bell peppers, and celery, stirring to sauté until soft and translucent, about 10 – 12 minutes. Add crawfish tails. Stir and cook until they begin to release their liquid, being careful not to overcook, about 5 minutes. Add flour/water mixture to crawfish, reduce heat to medium low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens, 3-5 minutes. Season with salt, red cayenne pepper, and granulated garlic, to taste. Add green onions and parsley. Transfer mixture to a bowl, cool slightly, then refrigerate. When mixture is completely cooled, chop mixture to a medium/fine consistency to use as filling. For the Pie Crust: To make the pie dough, place butter and cream cheese in the bowl of a mixer and blend until well combined. Add 3 cups of flour and mix. Remove from bowl and place on a clean surface or parchment paper. Knead slightly, adding more flour if needed. Shape dough into ball and divide into 2. Dust your rolling pen and surface for rolling out dough with flour. Roll out dough to desired thickness and cut into 3-inch rounds. Fill each round with 1 tablespoon cold crawfish filling, folding over dough, and seal by pinching edges together with a fork. Place finished pies on a parchment or waxed paper lined baking sheet and freeze. To bake, preheat oven to 350. Place frozen pies on a baking sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until center is warmed through and crust is golden. Yields 6-8 servings.

Lafayette is known as "The Hub City"" because of its proximity to major roadways heading north, south, east, and west that lead locals and visitors to explore smaller towns. Though Lafayette is the largest growing city in the region, a significant portion of its rich culture here is driven by surrounding communities, the gems that make up Acadiana.

The city of Scott's motto is "Where the West Begins and Hospitality Never Ends." Its close proximity to Interstate 10 makes its quaint downtown district accessible to visitors for local shopping, art galleries, and boudin. Lots and lots of boudin. The title "Boudin Capital of the World" was awarded to Scott by the state of Louisiana about five years ago. You can find the rice and meat-filled sausage staple at iconic joints like Billy's Boudin and Cracklin, Don's Specialty Meats, Best Stop Grocery, and NuNu's Cajun Market.

South Lafayette Parish remains one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. Along with this growth comes new businesses, new places to eat and drink including Parish Brewing, one of two breweries in Lafayette Parish. Nearby are restaurants like Poor Boy's Riverside Inn, Fezzo's, and Ton's Drive-In that serve local cuisine from plate lunch specials and burgers to boiled seafood. Broussard still carries its century's old heritage, with about 14 percent of its population that still speaks French.

Breaux Bridge was given its name from an early Acadian family who built a bridge over the Bayou Teche. The bridge over the Teche now celebrates the town's other title, given to it by the Louisiana Legislature in 1959, "The Crawfish Capital of the World." Its downtown district is the perfect day trip destination for a main street walk with shopping, dining, and live music. Check out venues like La Poussiere, Buck & Johnny's Pizzeria, and Tante Marie for weekly live music.

With a population fewer than 2,000 people, but nearly 40 percent Cajun French (according to Census data), Henderson is Acadiana's closest gateway into the Atchafalaya Basin. Along the Henderson Levee Road are gems that offer swamp tours, authentic food, drinks, and weekend Cajun/Zydeco dances, all with a waterfront view of the largest wetland in the United States. Be sure to stop at Pat's Fisherman's Wharf, Cajun Fast Track, Prehistoric Park, and Turtle's Bar.

Almost 200 years ago, a Catholic all-girls boarding school was founded by a pair of nuns in south St. Landry Parish. A small community sprung up around the Academy of the Sacred Heart, which has now become a spiritual stop for visitors. Grand Coteau is a quaint stopping point for boutique shopping and a bite to eat. It's neighboring town, Sunset also offers antique shopping and local cuisine. Grab a coffee and dessert at Chicory's Coffee and Café or a delicious meal at Café Josephine.

Annual Festival Field Guide

Locals Share Tips on Attending Their Favorite Fests Here in Louisiana, we’re known for our joie de vivre, a French expression meaning an exuberant love of life. Locals absolutely love hosting lively festivals to honor our rich Cajun culture and have a good time with friends and family—and visitors are always invited to the party! You’ll find we celebrate pretty much everything: rice, cotton and sugarcane; crawfish, frogs and squirrels; po’boys, hot sauce and boudin—and so much more! Festivals are one of the best ways to experience the world-famous music of Acadiana, home to an astonishing 16 GRAMMYs and dozens more nominated artists. “Music is such an essential part of Cajun culture, and our festivals allow you to see some incredible acts without paying a concert ticket,” says Wes Gautreaux, local business owner. “Festival International brings in musicians from all over the world, and many others like Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, Louisiana Crossroads, Downtown Alive! and the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival bring well-known Louisiana artists to the stage. And typically, after a festival, you can catch a bonus performance at Blue Moon and other venues around town.” Cajuns also love to eat! Festivals are an excellent way for visitors to sample staples like boudin, étouffée, crawfish, beignets, and local craft beer, with many restaurants and vendors from the entire region all in one place. “My wife likes to map out the food vendors ahead of time, so she knows exactly what to try,” says Adam Chauvin, a local food blogger known as @adamceats. “My biggest advice is to pace yourself so you don’t miss out on great options. Some of our favorites are the smoked turkey wing at Roberts Cove’s Germanfest, cracklin’ from Menard’s at the Scott Boudin Festival, Blue Dog’s crawfish corn dog from Festival International, and Acadian Slice hand pies and Bon Creole’s crawfish spinach boat at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.” Lafayette’s festivals, as well as Mardi Gras, are especially fun for kids. Major festivals like Festivals Acadiens et Créoles and Festival International have entire children’s tents set up. Other events typically offer a face painter, balloon artist, bounce house, or other activities. Local artist Hannah Mason often brings her three young children along. “Whether it’s Rhythms on the River in River Ranch or Mardi Gras downtown, we find a grassy spot to throw down a blanket as our basecamp for the day, where the kids can run around. For Festival International, we especially love going to Parc Sans Souci. The kids play at the Lafayette sign and the splash pad, and I’m close to all the art booths.” No matter what time of year you’re visiting Acadiana, there’s bound to be a special event or festival going on. Check out our calendar and come see! 74
